A very tall figure strides across the sandy dunes, his simple brown parka extends down towards his knees. Oddly, the figure's feat seem to be heavily armored at a glance. His head seems oddly disproportionate in comparison to the rest of his body, an old face with long white facial hair. A wide brimmed straw hat rests on his head.

"Shmick! Move faster why don't you? We've lost sight of our lovely feline friend again." He orders, to seemingly nobody in particular. But suddenly, a mechanical voice echoes from the body of this strange man.

"ᏢᎬᏒhᎪᏢs Ꭵf mᎪsᏆᎬᏒ ᎳᎬᏒᎬ ᏆᎾ ᏟuᏆ bᎪᏟᏦ ᎾᏁ hᎥs ᏢᎪsᏆᏒᎥᎬs, Ꭵ ᎳᎾuᏞᎠ ᏁᎾᏆ bᎬ ᎳᎬᎥᎶhᎬᎠ ᎠᎾᎳᏁ sᎾ."

"Nonsense, nonsense! I'm still as light as a feather my dear boy. Come come, I think I can see her mane!"

Kephry waits, watching the oddly proportioned man lop across the dunes after his prize, digging deeper into the sands as she waits...

The man's footsteps vibrate the ground as he continues to charge across the sand, the pounding being felt by the woman despite the loose sand below her. She shifts only ever so slightly to let her weapon set in a more comfortable possition as she waits, and when the man comes close enough to distinguish his whiskers she pounces upon him, gripping his coat with her claws and shouting, you've gotta keep up, old man! I had plenty of time to set up that scrub grass AND hide in the sand from you! she ruffles the older man's hair as if he were a child before continuing, that's three for me and one for you! At this rate I'll have you soundly beat long before Wati!

also unnecessarily long dot, as celebration for being approved!

In Scene - Hicklespurn and Zelda
The burning sands of the Brazen Frontier, along the river Crook. The water looks enticingly cool to the sunbaked travelers Hicklespurn and Zelda as they make their way from the Osirion city of Ipeq to Wati. Rumor is there will be a lottery for the exploration of sites in that city's "necropolis," a long dead portion of the city shrouded in the mystery of the past.

The explorers, who knew each other in their mutual home of Alkenstar to the south, only recently met again after their individual travels brought them separately to Osirion.

pausing here for RP between the two. The rest of the PCs will join very shortly.

Male Human (Polish Jew/Native American/Irish) Techie 7/Martial Artist 2

Retcon...
The two explorers had met for the first time in Ipeq, where the gnome had found out she was the daughter of an old friend from Alkenstar. Thus, she'd joined he and Kephry, whom he'd been traveling with recently.

Hicklespurn wondered where his friend Kephry was...she'd gone ahead by a few hours to hit a spot near the river which she knew local traders frequented.

Still same characters in scene, but now set up so that Hicklespurn and Kephry knew each other, and the gnome and Zelda just met.

The short and elder man hummed a tune from Alkenstar, one that Zelda would recognize from lullabies her parents may've sung to her when she was a babe. Smhick trudged along a few paces behind the two, hauling most of his master's belongings as per usual. Hickle's tune trailed off with a contemplative titter which was the young girl's only warning for him to start off again.

"Say there girl, I've been rather rude here now havn't I? Here I was, an old fella who knew your own pap and I've yet to see what you've even been up ter! Why don't you come about and indulge me why don't 'che? I've yet to ask why you're even from from our Duchess's good graces." He mentions a name Zelda dosn't immediately recognize as the city's fair leader, and she'd get the impression that they were the Grand Duchess at the time of Hickle's departure.

"After my... early graduation from Blythir College I decided there was more to the world that just home." she says, only a very slight hesitation when she says early graduation, you might not even notice. She's got short black hair and is rather pale for someone out in the desert sun. Possibly that could be due to her outfit, a white blouse under a light leather bodice with buckles, kneeihigh boots with thigh-high striped socks, white and red dress, and a red riding cloak. hahaha yes, a steampunk little red riding hood... still looking for the photo i had of her boots...

EDIT: Okay, finally found a photo of the boots I wanted for her on a Pinterest site.

Very cute! Why, if he was a century younger and not a married man... COUGH Let's not go playing up Atlas's clearly baseless accusation, shall we? >>

His fluffy brows rise a tad as he smiles wide at her apparent boast, the ever-trusting Hickle not seeing reason to doubt her words for as they are. He merely interpreted her hesitance as a show of modesty. "Impressive! One of my boys, ah... Ashweck I believe was one of the professors there ya know. Really brave of him I say, what with our... volatility." Zelda will indeed recall an Ashweck Hickleson, who was a professor of transmutation there. The poor man had an 'incident' when a spell demonstration had backfired and turned him into sand during her first year. It was horrifying to witness.

Unaware of his son's fate, he continues on in good cheer. "The traveling life eh? I suppose wanderlust get's to us all in the end. Why, it's because of that I find myself amongst all this sand! Damnable thing, because of it I've had sand in places I'd rather not think about... But, I suppose it's also led me to a few nice friends along the way." He smiles up at her and his construct. Shmick makes a show of rolling his head in mockery of teenagers all over the world, not at all impressed with his 'father'.

As the two travel further up the road, the hot sun beating down, they hear the sounds of combat around a bed, past an outcropping of oasis from the river.

Moving around the bend to the edge of the outcropping, the two see a trio involved in combat against a large insectoid creature that seemingly just burrowed out of the sand beside the road. Hickle realizes in shock that one of them is Kephry!

So in order, party except Zelda, then creature, then Zelda.

Map Round 1

Malavine and Payn were on the path when Kephry, just returning from the previously mentioned river traders, came upon them being attacked by this creature. You may assume a couple rounds of combat happened previously; no one is flat footed, and you can have one spell or effect up if you want it (except Zelda and Hickle, who are just entering the scene).

Squinting at the creature, Malavine smiled a little. "You know, this kind of things happens a surprising amount. You'd think someone would try and deal with these things more often, but....well, they seem to be attracted to the road. Get rid of one, and the next comes looking for tasty merchants. But speaking of tasty merchants..."

Malavine held up the steel Starknife she carried - one of several - and focused her mind onto the weapon. An aura of force began to pulse from the weapon as her magic enchanted it. Eyes focusing on the monster, Malavine threw.

Okay, need some help here. The infused attack counts as touch, correct?

While I wait on that...

Hicklespurn looks at the creature and thinks back on his long life, trying to come up with some useful information. That's it!

This creature is an ankheg, a huge, burrowing insect with a dangerous bite. An ankheg has a natural acidic venom which coats its mandibles and can be spit over short distances.

Hickle's action.

Hickle is not so much shocked to see this, as hardly anything surprises him these days. "Ah, the dreaded Ankheg. How wonderful, I'd hoped to meet one of those so I could milk it for it's acidic venom! Hm, too bad I had to sell off my kit last year. A missed opportunity I say." He tisks aloud, moving closer to the action and waving his hand in the beast's direction. The sand at his feat twists and molds into glass caltrops, which could be dangerous if it chooses to remain there.
Treat as normal caltrops.

Shmick meanwhile strides forward, thrusting out his arm and launching a crossbow bolt towards the creature, not wasting time. His lack of foreplaning is evident as the wooden arrow shatters on the insect's tough carapace, but his rotary is already loading another shot.

The creature manages to avoid stepping on any of the caltrops Hinkle has created, for now.

I certainly hope you can show me how to fight this, Kephry says to the Tiger spirit she called this morning, loosening her grip on her body and opening to the battle trance. She sprints to the back of the creature, feeling the spirit pull her there as she swings her weapon, a intricately carved paddle-like club with what appear to be teeth embeded in the edges, at the insect. But alas, she misjudges the distance between her and the creature and her mighty swing goes wide.

Waif.

That's the word that comes to mind when you look at her.

Even the voluminous cloak can not fully hide PAyn's thin ribs or skeletal arms. Her cheeks are caved in, as if her skull itself presses against the thin flesh shelter, demanding to be let out to see the world for itself. Her uncaring eyes stare dispassionately at the world, hiding her thoughts from all the might gaze upon her and ask, 'What's really going on in there?'

She stares at the newcomers with wide eyes, infinitely curious as to how they will finally die.
And infinitely confident that it will not be today.

I can't find an official ruling, but the trend of responses I see is toward no, because it's not "damage," it's a penalty. If you find me a ruling with a different answer, I'll allow it.

Fort Save DC 15:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

The insectoid creature is weakened by 4 points of strength, in addition to the 11 HP it took from Malavine's touch attack.

Sorry, I missed the question (life is exciting, still) but no, the infused attack is a regular attack. A normal blast would be a touch attack, but I'm basically adding to my own weapon, so it's a normal to hit.

Caltrops: 1d20 ⇒ 17
The caltrops continue to be the only effective member of this team, dealing another point of damage as they dig further into the beetle's feet!

Unsure if the same halved speed effect stacks, but let's er on the side of caution and say no. Also, wow, yeah. Yeah. Our rolls are pretty s@$+, but at least the beetle has failed as well so far.

Round 3. Hickle's round 3 action already posted. It's a miss, but the Caltrops cause another point of damage.

Muttering under her breath, Malavine swuinted her odd, metallic eyes at the creature again. Pulling another Starknife out with an easy, practiced motion, she focused the magic power into them once more and then hurled.

Frustration flashes across Kephry's face because of her inability to hit the creature, but nevertheless she still keeps up her assault on the giant insect, hoping she can take it down before it does any damage.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage: 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

Payn's attack further wounds the large insectoid menace. Finally, a powerfully blow from the feline Kephry ends the creature's life.

Combat over.

All members of the party are now in place. Kephry has been away from Hickle and their new friend Zelda for about half a day. Please RP your meeting.

The gnome claps his hands as the beast falls, "Well done, well done! An especially excellent finisher like usual, lovely Kephry. And very interesting shows of magic from the young redheaded girl, if I do say so myself. Wouldn't want to be caught up in that, what? Though I am very curious as to your sudden change of appearance Miss Lupescu. I didn't know your father to be an ah... Skin-walker I believe, yes?"

He humms to himself in thought, observing the fallen ankheg. "That acidic venom would be very useful, perhaps even catch a few coins at our destination... Do one of you perhaps have say, an iron pot or similar containers? -Oh! Where are my manners," He sputters, smoothing out his beard and dusting his clothes.

"Here I am, a nameless gnome and I ask some paserbys to borrow their own belongings! Terribly rude, I do apologize. My name is Hicklespurn, of clan Hickle toward far south. This here is my traveling companion, Shmick! Short for uh... Supremely Humanlike Mannerisms something something or other. I'm still working on it."

"ᎽᎾu'ᏉᎬ bᎬᎬᏁ ᎳᎾᏒᏦᎥᏁᎶ ᎾᏁ ᎥᏆ fᎾᏒ ᏆᎳᎬᏁᏆᎽ ᎽᎬᎪᏒs. ᏢᎬᏒhᎪᏢs ᎥᏆ's ᏆᎥmᎬ ᏆᎾ ᎶᎥᏉᎬ ᎥᏆ Ꭺ ᏒᎬsᏆ ᎪᏞᏒᎬᎪᎠᎽ, ᎽᎾu'ᏒᎬ ᏆᎬᏒᏒᎥbᏞᎬ ᎪᏆ ᎪᏟᏒᎾᏁᎽms." The being dryly states, causing the gnome to look very scandalized by the accusation.

Zelda shifts out of her 'werewolf' form, then smiles at Hinkle. "My father isn't. My mother however is a werewolf, the last natural-born of the Lupescu line." Earlier I said, but reminding you, Lupescu isn't her father's surname, it's her mother's.

Payn stares uncomfortably long at Hicklespurn.

...

...

"Yes, hurting the thing more might bring us profit," she says, taking out her dagger and walking over to the corpse.

She starts hacking and cutting and slashing and stabbing and carving and gashing and wounding and pricking and lacerating and chopping and clefting and dissecting and piercing and grazing and furrowing and ripping and rending and snipping and stabbing and at the dead bug with great purpose.
Though her face never shows more than deep concentration, it's hard to believe anyone would use a knife that much and not get some enjoyment out of it.

After a fashion it becomes clear that if anyone actually wants a gland intact, they should probably intervene now.
