Rashid al-Gahiji |
Yousef steps forward before anyone else comes in. "I better check this out first. You never know. Rashid. You think Saranrae could provide her blessing to this task?" He searches the area for traps as well as valuable doo-dads.
Rashid nods.
"Of course, Yousef."
Rashid casts Guidance on Yousef, to give him an extra +1 on that trap-finding roll.
Pullin out the key Bahram goes over to the seal and studies it. 'Are we ready?' he asks, looking over his shoulder.
My Lady, please continue to watch over us, as you have done for so long.
Rashid adopts an expression of steely determination.
"Yes Bahram, I am ready."
Almah stated that there was probably a full crypt complex beyond the seal, but we do not know *where* the Daemon is, so I would recommend casting / drinking all of our buffs (with the exception of the potion of Haste, which Yousef should drink as soon as we encounter the beast), and then opening the door, and exploring the crypt as fast as possible until we encounter the Daemon.
I am going to assume that we have all of our buffs running from now on, at any rate, unless anyone says otherwise.
Rashid's buffed statistics:
AC 24 / Touch 14 / FF 22
Buffs: Barkskin, Bless (Don't forget the +1 to hit and the +1 on saves Vs. Fear!), Bless Weapon (on Scimitar), Cat's Grace, Protection from Evil.
Everyone should have +1 to hit, and Yousef, Rashid, and Keldar should each have a Barkskin and a Protection from Evil running (and therefore an extra +4 to AC.

When everyone has finished drinking their potions and casting their spells Bahram turns bakc to the seal and, hesitantly, inserts the key. 'Sweet Nethys's guide my hand as I call forth the might of the arcane in your name.' he thinks fervently.
Bahram will cast mage armor on Keldar and Lavender, then inject himself with mage armor if he hasn't already.
ProfPotts |
I trust you guys will keep track of your own buffs - I have enough to do! :)
Actually, listing your current AC and Hit Points at the top of any combat (if there is any combat...) would be helpful to me as well.
As for any injected potions - the infusium is a room-sized piece of kit, you can't carry around its 'injectable variety' potions, you need to be at the machine to get them injected: so we'll assume that Bahram's already injected with that Mage Armour.
Bahram matches the ridges on the interdict key with the glowing lines on the interdict seal... as the metal plates are pressed together the strange red glow fades, the key warms slightly in Bahram's hand, a little steam rises from the plates with a metallic, burning, scent, and the key and seal fuse together! With the handle on the key now appearing like a doorhandle mounted in the centre of the door, all it takes is the slightest push and the door easily creaks open, to reveal that the stairs continue beyond, leading further downwards...
... The stairs lead to a rounded stone-walled chamber with a featureless door in the north wall. A ten-foot-diameter circle of mortared stones at the centre of the room marks a well that descends even deeper into the earth. Next to the well, on a small pedestal, is a large gong. A short stick capped with a round pad of moldering leather dangles from a cord attached to the gong platform...

Something I forgot to do earlier...
Take 10 on a Heal check gets me to 21...
Rashid looks up from where he had been inspecting some of the corpses.
"In terms of more information about our foe, it look as if the Pactmaster Guard were facing a large creature with insectile mandibles, scorpion-like claws, and some kind of spiked tail... although it also seems as if at least one of the Guard has wounds inflicted by his fellows as well... We should be on our guard..."
He then shrugs in response to Bahram's question.
"It would be only polite..."
Rashid then quickly moves over to the gong, and rings it.
The quicker we get the Daemon to us, after all, the less likely it is that our buffs will run out :-)
@Keldar: With Mage Armor, that puts your AC up to a respectable 20 :-)

"oooh s&~#" mumbles Yousef. He readies Tempest near the north door.
Readied action to attack anything that comes through the door.

The light managing to filter down from the chruch proving to only dimly illuminate the chamber, Lavender looses her ioun torch. With the glowing stone steadily orbiting the sorceress's head, it can be seen that the room's oval shaped, forty feet across and fifty feet deep, with the stairs down from the church to the south and the gong near the middle of the eastern wall. The ceiling is maybe fifteen feet high.
As Lavender moves to the well at the room's centre, Yousef crosses to the northern door - which proves to be a featureless stone slab, six or seven feet across, with no obvious means of opening it - and Rashid steps across to the gong. Bahram and Keldar remain near the stairs, each alert for potential trouble in his own way. Felliped draws his magical longsword, its glowing blade shedding a little extra light on the scene, and cautiously moves to the western side of the central well...
Taking the moldering ringer in hand, Rashid strikes the gong, which sounds a single rich, clear, note which fills and echoes around the chamber...
... And which is quickly followed by the sound of stone grinding against stone as the featureless slab at the north of the room, where Yousef is standing sentry, slides up, into the ceiling...
Seconds after the gong is rung, a gout of swirling, pinkish, vapour rushes out of the well (barely missing Lavender...)! The cloud of vapour shoots up to the ceiling before spliting neatly into three equal parts, each of which arcs back down towards the floor to the north, west, and east of the well, where they rapidly coalesce into three man-sized shapes: roiling firey forms of beautiful angels with fire for wings and hair! The three angel-like figures waste no time in blazing towards the nearest targets - Felliped to the west, Yousef to the north, and Rashid to the east...
Turning as the angelic figure rushes towards him, Yousef slices Tempest through it - the mighty sword's chill (but not quite Frost... yet...) blade hissing as it carves a darkened line of ash and cinders through the flaming maelstrom which is the creature's body, causing it to writhe in pain...
Meanwhile, Lavender hurls her tanglefoot bag at the angelic being charging Rashid - the alchemical goo bursts out of the flimsy bag, straying up what passes for legs on the creature. Amazingly, the attack actually seems to work... at least, for the moment, as the angelic figure appears to be stuck fast... although the dark resin-like goo is already boiling, popping, and steaming; a scent like burning tar filling the room as the thing tries to pull itself free...
From his vantage by the stairs, Bahram hurls a crackling arc of lightning at the third of the creatures as it moves towards Felliped. The lightning strikes the angelic figure dead-centre, for a brief moment connecting the creature to Bahram's outstretched hand with a bright, wavy, glowing blue line which shifts and jumps as the smell of ozone joins that of burning tar... The figure shudders and contorts for a moment, a patch of its blazing form darkening where the lightning struck, before resuming its movement towards Felliped...
As the angelic figure closest to Rashid struggles to free itself from Lavender's tanglefoot bag, the one near Yousef slams a flaming fist across the half-orc's chest! Yousef takes 11 Hit Points of damage (from impact and fire combined), and needs to make a Reflex save Vs DC 14 to avoid catching on fire! Good times... goog times... ;)
Felliped suffers a similar fate, the angelic creature striking him across the face with a burning backhanded blow, causing the Chelish man to cry out in pain as his flesh is seared... although he manages to avoid catching on fire as he clutches at his face for a moment, staggering a step away from the creature, then points towards it whilst uttering arcane words... words which cause a torrent of water to blast forth from his outstretched hand to engulf the flaming figure! A great cloud of steam arises as the sudden wave of water hits the blazing angel... but when it clears it appears that the creature has merely been forced a little way away from Felliped, appearing none the worse for wear...
Keldar and Rashid - who didn't have readied actions prepared - get to go, then it's next round actions for everyone!

Rashid regards the fiery Angels with astonishment, and wonder...
What are these beautiful creatures?
Knowledge(Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17.
...up until they start attacking his companions.
Rashid's face hardens, and with a muttered prayer under his breath, he channels positive energy into his consecrated scimitar, causing the holy-symbol etched into the weapon to glow with a divine light.
"I am a servant of the Dawnflower, and we have come here to purge the evil that resides within this crypt, not to pillage it. Stand-down, or we will be forced to destroy you!"
He then brandishes his Scimitar in front of him to prove his point.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12.
Round 2:
If the Angels do not respond favorably to his plea, Rashid sighs, and attacks the closest one:

"I am a servant of the Dawnflower, and we have come here to purge the evil that resides within this crypt, not to pillage it. Stand-down, or we will be forced to destroy you!"
At Rashid's words, and actions, the three angelic figures suddenly cease their attacks to turn towards him... and remain motionless...
Padding over to the northern door, hyena-Keldar...
If Yousef still wants to attack the now-unmoving angelic beings then let me know, since I'm not assuming that he will...
Rashid al-Gahiji |
Oh, Yousef... Rashid sighs.
"Yousef, I know that your Orcish blood runs hot, but please, stop attacking the crypt guardians; They seem to be fire elementals that have been forced into a 'pleasing' shape, and I dare say that they were put here by the clerics of old to guard the eternal sleep of those that lie within. They are no longer a threat to us..."
"We need to keep moving, and find the Daemon as soon as possible!"
He then turns to Keldar.
"Is there anything hostile in that room up ahead? One bark for yes, two for no."
Rashid then turns to Lavender.
"The crypt guardians came from down the well; is there anything down there?"
jjaamm/Keldar |
Yousef stops attacking, stares at the fiery figures. "Okay. Heal me up and let's go." He heads down through the newly opened door after he gets healed.
stay in front. perception with stone 14,with 10' auto try. Will trust in this and keep scent out for hiding bad guy.
Rashid al-Gahiji |
Rashid shrugs.
"Well, for the moment, time is of the essence, so we should not delay. Keldar, are there any exits from that room (One bark for yes, two for no)? If not, we might need to try our luck with that well; I have some rope that we could fasten to make the trip down easier, if necessary..."
Whether we go into the room, or down the well, Rashid will heal Yousef as we go along, to save time...

Clutching his face, Feliped mutters what can only be a string of curse words (probably in some infernal tongue of his native Cheliax) and exchanges meaningful looks with Yousef as his grip on his longsword tightens... but he too stays his hand at Rashid's words... although he keeps a cautious eye on the 'guardians' as the group move by them...
However the angelic beings do appear calm for the moment... at least as long as Rashid keeps his consecrated blade or holy symbol visible to them...
Through the door to the north there's a short, maybe fifteen foot long, ten foot wide corridor, leading into a large, rough-hewn chamber, forty feet wide and a little less than that deep, containing several niches for burial. Shrouded corpses, most reduced to skeletons decades if not centuries ago, pack the niches from floor to ceiling. A raised dias in the centre of the room bears a ceramic cask with an elaborate topper capped by a figure of Sarenrae. There doesn't appear to be any further exits from the chamber.
After spending a few moments incanting arcane words, Feliped gingerly removes his hand from his (now undamaged) face, swears again as he shakes his head, and steps over to the well. Peering down for a moment, his brow furrows,
'It's too dark for me to see much, but it looks deep. Mistress Lavender - do your elven eyes see water at the bottom of this thing, or something else? I can't imagine our... "friends"... living at the bottom of a water-filled well, considering their combustable nature.'
Rashid al-Gahiji |
Rashid shrugs.
"To be honest, Yousef, I do not think I have any ability to control them; they simply seem to be compelled to not attack whilst I display a symbol of the Dawnflower..."
He then carefully digs-out his rope and a piton, and hands them to Yousef.
"If you fasten that to the side of the well, we should be able to get down to investigate the bottom without too much difficulty. You should probably go first, since I know you are fairly skilled at climbing, and I will have to go down last, so that I can make sure the Guardians do not attack anyone..."
ProfPotts |
'My thanks, sorcerer,' Feliped nods to Bahram as the glowing pebble drops...
"So much for my elven advantage..."
'Oh, I'm sure your dazzling eyes are hardly your only advantage,' Feliped smiles as he winks at Lavender, 'perhaps once this whole affair is settled we could discuss your many qualities? Mayhap over dinner?'
"If you fasten that to the side of the well, we should be able to get down to investigate the bottom without too much difficulty. You should probably go first, since I know you are fairly skilled at climbing, and I will have to go down last, so that I can make sure the Guardians do not attack anyone..."
Glancing up Feliped frowns slightly,
'I bow to your expertise in such matters, Father, but I do wonder how our firey friends will react to Master Yousef pounding iron spikes into the place..?'
bark
Peering towards the next chamber, where Keldar padded off to, Feliped asks,
'Was one bark "yes" or "no"? Maybe we need a more detailed code..?'
Rashid al-Gahiji |
Rashid favors the Guardians with a long look, before responding to Felliped.
"Hopefully, they will not respond poorly; however, I see no other way to get down, and then be able to get back up again, easily.
We could always Featherfall down, but unless there is another exit, getting back up would be a slow process...
Nonetheless, it might be worth trying...
However, before we do that, we should see what Keldar has found."
He then moves over in the direction of the other room, making sure to keep the symbol of Sarenrae visible to the Guardians at all times...
With two Rings of Feather Fall in the party, it should be a simple matter to 'hug tight', and jump down safely. Getting back up would be a slow process, involving going two at a time by giving the Boots of Spider Climb to Rashid or Yousef, and then having them 'ferry' the lighter members of the party up to the surface. Slow, but definitely doable! :-)
Yousef olan Ahmad |
"Screw it. Only one way to find out." Yousef grabs the piton and mallet from Rashid and begins to hammer the spike into the side of the well.
If he is able to complete the task he secures the rope and descends, dropping the last ten feet using his agility to avoid hurting himself.
Acrobatics 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28 I am assuming the Ring of Jumping will apply here.
ProfPotts |
Felliped smiles appreciatively as he watches Lavender's exit... then blinks and turns to Bahram and Yousef,
'She's... ah... I mean neither of you and her are... together, right?' he asks quietly...
The angelic fire creatures seem to... flinch... a little as Yousef starts to hammer in a piton, but remain in place, eyes locked to Rashid's presented symbol of Sarenrae...
Meanwhile, in the crypt...
Following Keldar's barked and canine-gestured directions seems, at first, to lead nowhere but into the back of one of the corpse-filled niches... but some gentle experimental probing from Lavender (as Rashid holds the elementals at bay and looks on) causes the whole rear wall of the niche to swing backwards with a soft 'click' - revealing a worked stone tunnel beyond, maybe five feet across, going back (west) a good thirty feet before turning ninety degree right (towards the north)...
Back in the well room...
Finishing his preparations Yousef quickly descends the rope, dropping lightly to the floor at the bottom...
Bahram Zarishu |
Leaning out to look down the well Bahram watches Yousef's decent intently, certain somthing will go wrong. 'Who? Me and..?' Bahram nods toward Lavender. 'No, no were not. We're more akin to siblings in fact. Somthing connects us, not blood or heart, but rather what's in our blood. I believe the power in our veins connects us somehow.' Looking back down the well Bahram calls after Yousef. 'What do you see down there? Wich way are we going?'
Rashid al-Gahiji |
As Yousef heads down the shaft, Rashid comments:
"If the rope does not reach the end of the shaft, you will need to attach the rope you have to the end of it."
Yousef is the only other person in the party besides Rashid that carries rope...
He then calls after the others.
"What have you found in there? We really should not split our forces too much; whichever group I follow will (probably) be protected against the Guardians, but the others will undoubtedly be attacked, once I am out of sight..."
Bahram Zarishu |
Looking up at Rashid Bahram frowns and looks back down the well. "Well wichever way we choose we must get Yousef out of the well." he says. Grabbing hold of the rope he pulls himself over the ledge and feather falls down, hanging on as he nears the end off it he wraps it around his waist and hangs there with arms outstretched to Yousef. "Throw me the end off your rope so I can attach them."
Rashid al-Gahiji |
Rashid nods.
"Well, by all means, go ahead and have a look where it leads. I will stay here and keep the guardians occupied; just do not wander too far away..."
ProfPotts |
As Bahram drops down the well, the bottom of the shaft darkens (as Yousef throws Bahram's glowing pebble further on). Observing from above, Felliped incants a brief cantrip - four lantern-like lights appear around Bahram and drop down the shaft with him...
"Well, by all means, go ahead and have a look where it leads. I will stay here and keep the guardians occupied; just do not wander too far away..."
Glancing up from the well, Felliped says,
'It looks like Yousef and Bahram have found something down here too... or, at least, I can't see Yousef down there any more...'
