Actually, Almah is paying the agreed-upon amount; you originally arranged a 'deal' of 200gp apiece, and Rashid was able to haggle that upward to 500gp apiece with his 'fortune-telling'...

Rashid nods to Bahram.

"Of course. Almah gave it to all of us, after all..."

"We would also appreciate it if you had some sort of security set-up for us to store our valuables while we go down to the church."

'Of course,' Almah smiles, adding, 'what's the use of being a merchant princess if one can't supply simple banking services?'

Bahram:
Your appraisal of the silver is that it's the amount which Almah just said it was... she hasn't short-changed you! The interdict key is a rare magical item, part of a set which goes with an interdict seal - unbreakable and unpassable by all but the most powerful magics. Each seal has one key only. Such items are said to be an invention of the Packmasters themselves, and are rarely heard of outside their control, or that of those who serve them.

"I have spoken with Almah, and she has agreed to uphold the terms that we negotiated; as long as you agree to abide by the local laws, you can live here in peace. However, Almah has requested that you return to your residence whilst they set-up in town, and the rest of the new populace gets used to the concept of having you as an ally and neighbor."

'I'll return there for now, priest,' Undrella responds, 'but I won't be a prisoner there - we'll talk again once you've braved the thing under the temple... if you return... Otherwise I may have to try negotiating my own deal with your mistress...'

With that, the harpy dutifully flies off, out of the opening in the battlemarket roof...

Quote:
"I am afraid that there is still not anything I can do to cure his disease, but I feel confident that before too long, I will understand the required Mysteries; Dawnflower willing, we will then be able to cure him..."

'Hmmm...' Father Zastoran muses, 'you do seem to have the favour of the Dawnflower at the moment - I suppose all this "cleansing of evil" is her thing, really. Yes, yes... I can see what you mean... It must be a comfort to worship a deity which is considered sane! Much easier to comprehend what is required of one, yes?' he smiles, then adds, 'But don't think that I'm disrespecting Nethys! Trying to work out the whims of my god is all part of the path I've chosen. Comprehending that infusium is sure to take me a good few years... so I suppose both our gods have seen fit to guide us to interesting points in our respective journeys of faith, here in Kelmarane...'

So... what's the plan?

"Bahram, how long do the potions last if they are injected by this... thing? Can we even use it? Maybe it can help give us an edge against the deamon... Worst case, Father Zastoran, would you be able to extract the potions so we could use them?"

Lavender will rest up and regain her strength and then will try to possibly purchase some equipment. Do we know anything about the Deamon that could be useful?

We should see what other equipment Almah has to offer. Yousef could probably use a mithril chain shirt if she has one. Also, if we can find out what kind of weapons work best against a daeman, assuming DR of some sort, we should do that.

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

For the record, we each have gained an extra 3232 gp and 3 sp from the loot (including the 500gp each from Almah).

I concur, if we can 'tool-up', I would certainly be happy to... I have a long 'laundry list' of MW weapons that I would like to purchase; I imagine that:

MW Heavy Pick (308gp)
MW Warhammer (312gp)
MW Cold Iron Scimitar (330gp)
MW Alchemical Silver Scimitar (405gp)
MW Sling (300gp)

= 1655gp

Would be things that might be available from the Caravan.

I also have a long list of 'clerical' equipment that I would like (such as a MW Illuminated copy of the Birth of Light and Truth', a MW Portable Altar, and some other religious equipment), but I imagine that those are things I will have to 'special order' from Katapesh at a later point in time.

As for enchanting armor and weapons, I dare say Nyx might be able to help with that, if we asked politely, but again, that is probably something we should do when we have a bit more time on our hands...

Well, I had the impression that we should head to the temple after a good night's rest; I do not want to delay too long, for fear of Kardswann escaping, or the Daemon doing something else...?

m dwarven page 18 druid 5th

agree should goto temple as soon as can, but should be armed for it

The Exchange

After some time discussing things with Father Zastoran, and delving into a few of the books the old priest brought along, Felliped offers his opinions on 'Xulthos'...

'I don't believe this daemon will be particularly impervious to normal weapons,' he suggests, 'although it's most likely immune to corrupting influences like acid or poison... and resistent to cold, flame, and lightning. If I'm right, it will use displays of colour and sound to distract and confound us... effects which I can offer some defence against, so I guess that will be my primary job. It's likely a master of illusion... and we've already seen its power to dominate even someone as powerful as Kardswann... although I'm gambling that in maintaining a hold on the genie, it won't be able to bring such intense powers of control against us... maybe lesser powers, but it will still have used some resources to keep Kardswann under its sway. If we delay too long, it will likely drop its control over Kardswann and regain whatever power it has expended to exert that control in the first place - and even the genie failed to defeat it in that state...'

Between Lavender, Bahram, and Father Zastoran, it's eventually discovered what the various potions contained in the infusium do... They're: mage armour, magic fang, blur, cat's grace, invisibility, spider climb, and haste ... as well as the contraption's operation... as a full round action an individual can use the device to inject a potion, which doubles its duration. No roll is required to use the device.

Father Zastoran can extract the potions from the infusium for you, to be used as normal potions, if you want... although he seems to really want to see the thing in operation!

Equipment-wise, the caravan doesn't have the sort of masterwork quality or mithral items you're looking at now - for that you'll need to wait until the town's up and running again! While Nyx has offered to make magic items for you, she needs the supplies to do so (essentially you exchange gold for a bunch of arcane supplies, and she can use them to make magic stuff) - but again, such supplies won't be available until trade starts to flow and, besides, making stuff takes time. If you want to visit her for some other reason, then be aware that it's (essentially) another day's worth of getting there, talking, and getting back.

Oh, and also be aware that once the interdict key is used, the seal is gone for good - at that point it's a case of defeating the daemon or, potentially, letting it escape into an unsuspecting world... No pressure... ;)

hp 35 | AC 12 | T 12 | FF 10 | CMD 12 | F +2 | R +3 | W +3 | Init +8 | Per +8 || LL 8 || Sp ~/8/2 ||| SpC 8min

Sooner the better on going after the daemon. If there are any potions, scrolls, alchemical items, or masterwork crossbow bolts available, Lavender would diffidently do some trading. If they have a light crossbow available, she will purchase one of those. Otherwise she will grab a heavy crossbow and some bolts for now and will be ready to go.

Lavender suggests the following with the potions...

mage armour (1/2 hrs) (Injection ; Lavender, Bahram, or Keldar)
magic fang (1/2 mins) (Potion ; Keldar)
blur (3/6 mins) (Potion; Anyone)
cat's grace (3/6 mins) (Potion; Anyone)
invisibility (3/6 mins) (Potion; Anyone)
spider climb (30/60 mins)(Injection; Not Lavender)
haste (5/10 rounds) (Potion; Someone who physically attacks)

If we can get to the church super fast and we have some knowledge that the daemon is literally right behind that sealed door, then some of the other potions are most likely ok for injections, but it might be pushing it duration wise.

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

I concur with 'injecting' the Mage Armor and possibly the Spider Climb, but I think the other potions are ones that we should imbibe normally, because of their relatively short duration - I don't want to blindly run in, ignoring everything else in the temple whilst we make a bee-line for the sealed door.

Once we get to the door, of course, we can start buffing like crazy :-)

I think that Felliped should get the Invisibility, since he will probably not be engaging directly in combat, we should probably toss the Blur and Haste on Yousef, and Rashid would not mind the Cat's Grace, as an extra two points of AC would be good :-)

In terms of spells, I will go all-out in terms of buffs for this fight:

1st level: Bless, Protection from Evil x3 (one each for Yousef, Rashid and Keldar, since I assume that we will be the melee characters), CLW (Domain)

2nd level: Bull's Strength x 3 (again, one each for Yousef, Rashid and Keldar), Bless Weapon(Domain).

@Keldar: It would probably help if you could prep Barksin x3 in your three non-domain second-level slots, again for Yousef, Rashid, and Keldar...

Those are just my thoughts on what we should do :-P

The Exchange

Basic equipment (such as a light crossbow) is generally going to be available from the caravan (no sailing ships or anything like that though... ;) ). Masterwork stuff won't be. Father Zastoran can still supply potions of cure light wounds, cure moderate wounds, delay poison, and lesser restoration, as well as non-magical holy water, all of which he's still selling on to you at cost (half the list price), 'cos Almah wants him to and you're 'all on the same team' (even though he doesn't really like selling them so cheaply...). Alchemical items will be available. Other potions won't be... although you could always see what Undrella's brewed up recently... That's probably about it, really - if they had lots better stuff they would have let you have it earlier, right? :)

For all that Almah's been told by her masters back in the capital, she doesn't have much information on the daemon or the church it's sealed in - although she's under the impression that there's a whole crypt through the sealed door, not just one room.

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

So... what's the final plan?

Go to temple and buff before entering it seems. Bahram will exchange his heavy crossbow for a normal one too for ease of use otherwise I think were as geare up as were going to get at this point.

I agree with the potions, so lets divvy those up. I have list of things I want to buy in the ooc board. Besides that, ready to attack the temple!

"So who want's which potions or to have them injected?" Lavender wearily looks at the strange contraption and it's needles.
"I... Think I'm good. You guys have at them..."

The Exchange

Once everyone's gathered (and / or injected) what they want to, the group sets out for the local church...

The forlorn ruin of Kelmarane's church to Sarenrae sits in front of the cliffside overlooking the withered pesh fields to the west through a series of free-standing pillared archways perched on the cliff's edge. Most of the church's exterior walls still seem to be standing.

As you make your way around the church to find the entrance, you see that between the church itself and the archways lies the church cemetery - a short yard across which stands a ten foot tall marble column upon which stands a splendid statue of Sarenrae with both arms upraised to the heavens. In the shadow of this statue are five graves marked with the life-sized statues of holy warriors. What was likely once a well-tended garden has suffered from both overgrowing and returning to the desert since being left untended - resulting in a mix of tangled brown weeds crawling up the statues and bare patches of dust scattered across the ground between clumps of desert grasses. Remarkably, despite the town's long abandonment and recent occupation by the gnolls, what appears to be a human man garbed in the fine robes of Sarenrae kneels before these statues, muttering a quiet series of prayers...

Felliped glances sidelong at Rashid,

'One of yours, Father?' he asks quietly, a healthy dose of skeptism in his tone as his fingers close cautiously around the hilt of the magic longsword he still wears...

Aproching the praying man quietly Bahram intends to wait till he finishes his prayer, growing impatient he end up giving a soft cough to gain his attention. 'Excuse me sir. Isn't this an odd place for such a well dressed man to be offering prayer to the Dawnflower? Not that offering prayers by a church is odd, but beeing in Kelmarane, dressing well and whorshiping Sarenrae seems an odd combination concidering our experience of this fine town so far.'

"I find it highly suspicious, as well..."

He then carefully approaches the man, keeping a respectful distance to allow him to finish his prayers.

Let's go with 20' away. Rashid will have his shield out, but at present, will not have his weapon drawn.

Once he has finished his prayers (either because he had actually finished, or he had been interrupted), Rashid smiles, and says:

"Please forgive the impatience of my friend, here, but he is correct; your presence here is a little unusual, given what we have seen of the town thus far..."

As the skeletal figure charges towards Rashid, Bahram flings out two glowing missiles of magical energy which impact the thing's chest - shredding ragged robes and blasting away scraps of withered skin and shards of bone...

... Although clearly damaged by the sorcerer's mystic assault, the skeletal figure's onrush towards Rashid seems to be fuelled by some fanatic madness, its eyes glowing brightly as its claw-like fingers frantically rake at the dwarven priest... only for Rashid to interpose his shield, the filthy bone claws scoring the surface, but sparing the flesh...

Keldar launches a bolt of flame from his outstretched hand... but it flies wide of the mark, impacting on the stone wall of the church where it flares for a moment and then dies, leaving a fresh sooty patch to add to the damage still present from two decades past...

Moving almost as one, Rashid fluidly steps a little round the skeletal figure, even as he draws his scimitar to strike it, allowing Yousef to charge in from the creature's other side. Both scimitar and Tempest cut deep, Rashid's stroke carving a score across the face of the thing's skull, Yousef's splintering rib bones and bits of vertibrae as he strikes from behind. Yet still the creature doesn't fall...

Pulling and hurling a flask of blessed water (happily not caring if it hits her friends or not - trusting that neither Rashid nor Yousef are unholy enough to suffer any from being splashed! ;) ) Lavender hits the creature square on, flask shattering and the pure water dosing the skeletal thing hissing away like acid where it soaks it... yet it still stands...

Drawing his glowing magical longsword, Felliped steps in to take a swing... but the skeletal thing ducks the magician's blow...

Rashid:
You recognise the creature as a huecuva - a foul undead thing, barely intelligent, but cunning and driven by the dark lusts and impulses which doomed its soul while it was living. It's fast, strong, and (as you've witnessed) can disguise itself to lure victims closer... although such disguises are most often images of the thing itself as it once was in life. It's said that only magic or silver can damage it, and that it carries filth fever upon its festering bone claws...

Next round, please!

"It is a huecuva! A foul undead beast, which only silver or magic can damage properly. Given how fixated it is upon me, I dare say it was probably a priest of Sarenrae in life, before it became corrupted... Beware its claws, for they carry disease!"

With Bahram's continued casting two more of the shimmering projectiles manifest, each flying off in a different wide, lazy, arc for a moment, before twisting and corkscrewing through the air as they aim unerringly at the huecuva's chest, once again impacting with bone-jarring impact...

... Yet the undead thing keeps up its assault, powering its way past Rashid's guard before he has time to take a more defensive stance, and raking both clawed, skeletal, hands across the dwarf's face and chest, to leave long bloody rents in his flesh! Rashid takes 15 Hit Points of damage, and needs two DC 15 Fortitude saves Vs Disease... or would, except...

Rashid:
... Even as the huecuva's claws rake painfully across your face and chest, you find your eyes drawn, for just a moment, to the statue of Sarenrae as you're filled with the sense that the goddess herself watches over you... You automatically pass those two saves Vs Disease - no need to actually roll!

Muttering the strange, primal, words of his own faith, Keldar steps up behind Rashid to lay a hand on his fellow dwarf's shoulder... Quickly spreading out from the point touched, Rashid's skin, where it can be seen beneath his clothes and armour, seems to darken and harden, taking on jagged lines like the bark of an old tree...

Assuming his defensive stance, Rashid manages little more than fending the creature off... and, of course, distracting it from Yousef's attack... With a mighty overhand blow Yousef brings Tempest down, slicing through the undead creature from skull to pelvis, seperating it into two parts (each tinged, just a little, with frost where the legendary weapon struck) which fall apart, clattering into unmoving piles of bones, dried skin, and filth-stained robes!

Pulling out another flask of holy water, Lavender sees the thing (re-)die and holds back from throwing again.

Taking a step back as the undead creature collapses, Felliped looks from the piles of bones to Yousef (or rather, his sword...) and back again, blinking a couple of times,

'Impressive...' he murmurs, '... most impressive...'

Yousef shakes the ice off of Tempest and sheathes the weapon, nodding to Feliped. "It is quite the blade. Shall we continue?"

Any last vestiges of the brand of the Rough Beast the gnolls scarred you with when first enslaved vanish, as enlightenment descends upon you! Rashid gains a +1 inherent bonus to Wisdom! Otherwise known as 'paydirt'... ;) You don't recognise the names on the tombstones, but from the holy texts inscribed they would appear to be, as the 'priest' indicated, heroes of both Sarenrae's faith and the town of Kelmarane. They all appear to have been dead and buried long before the 'incident' twenty years ago. The statue appears to be just that... a statue... no more or less than any other image of the Dawnflower...

Lavender:
Joining Rashid in his prayers, you feel as if the eyes of the Dawnflower have somehow turned towards you, her majestic wings spread protectively over you... You gain the benefits of a Bless spell for the next 4 hours!

Bahram:
Nothing about the piles of once-animate bones and cloth seems to hold any magic any more...

Behind the statue of Sarenrae are the main arched double doors into the temple...

Creaking open as the heavy iron rings set into the bronze-studded wooden doors are pulled on, the main prayer hall of the temple is revealed within - maybe a full seventy-five feet across, twelve stone pillars hold up the ceiling, circling the hall's dome which rises to a fifty feet above the chamber. Sunlightly, filtered through the remnants of the church's stained glass windows, illuminates the hall, revealing three semi-circular steps to the north, leading the raised dais of the apse which holds the temple's main stone alter - carved with a sunburst motiff - beneath a smaller dome.

Set into the prayer hall's south wall are three doors - the central double doors which provide the other entrance into the temple from outside (and which were blocked by rubble outside as you circled the building on your way to the cemetery), and the smaller single arched doors leading to the southeastern annex and the southwestern annex...

Rashid:
The layout seems fairly standard for a Katapeshi temple of Sarenrae - which would suggest that the southwestern annex holds the sacristy, quarters for the high priest, acolytes, and other temple staff, and a small private chapel for their use; and the southeastern annex should be where the stairs down to the crypt are located.

"Ahhh! ow!" Lavender exclaims as she steps back in surprise and falls on her rump. "Did, did anyone else see that?!" She says as she points to the statue.

ProfPotts:
:-)

Rashid stares up at the statue, his face suffused with an expression of absolute serenity.

When Lavender speaks, he shakes his head, as if awakening from a dream, and beams a euphoric smile in her direction.

"Did you see it too? Is it not wonderful the She should take such an interest in what we are trying to do here? I feel truly Blessed."

Rashid then offers a hand to decorously help the Sorceress to her feet, and ushers the party into the temple.

Once inside, Rashid makes a beeline for the main altar, falling to his knees, and reciting the first prayer that he learned as an Acolyte in the Dawnflower's Church.

Knowledge(Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16.

He then slowly pulls himself to his feet, and turns to the others, as if only now truly seeing them for the first time...

"The layout of this temple looks similar to what I remember of the main temple back in Katapesh; I dare say that the southwestern annex will have held the sacristy, quarters for the temple staff, and a small private chapel for their use; whilst the southeastern annex should be where the stairs down to the crypt are located."

Rashid nods to Yousef.

"We should probably do a quick search of the southwestern annex to make sure that there are no more nasty surprises waiting for us, like that huecuva, before heading down the stairs in the southwestern annex."

...before heading down the stairs in the southeastern annex, that is...

Bahram follows along into the temple.

"Good idea Rashid. It might also yield clues."

The Exchange

A brief search of the southwestern annex proves Rashid's observations about the layout correct, but yelds little except to confirm that the temple was as thoroughly ransacked as the rest of the town when disaster struck all those years past. The interior walls have been demolished and gutted. Several skeletons litter the place, most appearing to have been clerics of Sarenrae or common citizens, although the past twenty years have rotted away most of their skin and clothes. Ash and evidence of fire stains the remains of the interior walls and the ceiling, and signs of violent battle are everywhere...

The southeastern annex seems to be in a similar state, although here at least a dozen of the corpses are garbed in the red-chitin livery of the Pactmaster Guard... it looks as if a running battle was fought, getting more and more intense as it neared the forlorn stairwell located here...

Heal DC 20:
From the evidence on the corpses it look as if the Pactmaster Guard were facing a large creature with insectile mandibles, scorpion-like claws, and some kind of spiked tail... although it as seems as if at least one of the Guard has wounds inflicted by his fellows as well...

... The stairwell leads down to a heavily barred door, with a strange metal plate set into its surface - the plate has a series of irregularly etched glowing lines across its surface, which bathe the stairwell in a dim crimson light... The glowing lines on the plate appear to mirror the grooves and prongs on the interdict key Almah gave you...

Yousef steps forward before anyone else comes in. "I better check this out first. You never know. Rashid. You think Saranrae could provide her blessing to this task?" He searches the area for traps as well as valuable doo-dads.

Trapfinding 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 or 19 if sight based.
.
Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 or 22 if visual.
