DM Screen:
Strength check: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

The hound ignores the elf behind him in favor of the dwarven morsel before him, but while he is strong enough for Gilgar to feel its very hot breath on his skin, its teeth fail to make a mark.

The elf likewise struggles with the wind, making it impossible for him to strike as precisely as he would like. That is, no sneak attack.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Confirmation

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

No crit, but what a hit!

Nox is up!

Heal DC 15:
The dwarf is still going strong, but he can't take much more. The ranger is better, but not great.

Male Elf Druid 4

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 Heal check
A quick glance at his mates telling him little, Nox takes a stab at the hound.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 rapier attack

and misses

As the gust of wind fades away, the smoke begins to gather again, but it is not affecting visibility yet. The creature is looking the worse for wear.

Gilgar is up! (He has a flank with Graymoon, by the way.)

Dwarf Barbarian

2-handed Dwarven Waraxe Attack + Raging: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 2 = 26
Dwarven Waraxe 2-handed damage + Raging: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

With a gasp, the hound falls. Nearby, you hear the previously-steady hammering pause, then start again.

Well done!

Dwarf Barbarian

Gilgar collapses against the wall, chest heaving, sweat and blood dripping from his body...

Male Elf Druid 4

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 heal check

Nox, after assessing the state of his 2 comrades, cast Cure Light wounds on Gilgar

1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

That's all my healing spells for the day friends.

"Do you think the halfling with the kids is a healer?"

Male Elf Druid 4

I know how to find out, and I think regrouping may not be unwise.

Dwarf Barbarian

Breathing a little easier after the healing, Gilgar nods his appreciation to Nox, pushes himself upright with some effort, and gives the signal for them to be "reeled" in by Kimmie and the others.

Working through the slack to be able to give a signal gives you pause - a quick yank would have informed no one of anything - but the rope surely and steadily leads you back to the room where the others anxiously await.

Disappointment and concern for your burns are present in equal measure in the faces that greet you.

"There was a great wind and the smoke came out!" Pointing up to illustrate that quite a bit remains in the room.

"How did you get burned like that?"

From Kimi, "Did you find Jurin? Is he already..."

From Edgrin, "Look at those wounds! I've already used up my healing for the day, just to get to where you found us! Have you a wand or potions?"

Dwarf Barbarian

"Aye..." the burly Dwarf grumbles, digging around in his pack before pulling out several potions "Got healin' here... Ain't found no kid yet, jus' some devil dog what like tuh kill't us..."

Gilgar will hand out some potions to Nox and Graymoon if they need them, then he'll gulp down a few himself.

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Subtracting the 3 I just downed, there are 11 left in Gilgar's stash, so as long as no one's intent on drinking themselves silly...

Graymoon likewise digs into his pack and pulls out a pair of vials. "Guess this is that rainy day I was holding these for."

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Nice! He's back to full.

Male Elf Druid 4

Nox will take 1 of the potions

1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 CLW

"So... What now?"

Dwarf Barbarian

Recovered from his fatigue and healed up quite a bit, Gilgar's bluster returns full-force. "Back in! Gots tuh find us a kid." He stalks towards the hallway once again.

Is the smoke dissipating now that the doggie is done in?

No. In your final confrontation with the creature, when Nox used his spell to disperse the smoke, it seemed to be issuing from farther into the complex. In fact, the smoke is gradually filling back in.

Dwarf Barbarian

Heading back in anyway...

You reach the point from which you retreated without challenge. The smoke is visibly thicker ahead of you and filtering into your area. The sound of the forge has continued with only the one hesitation when the hound fell. Do you want anyone else to join you, or is it the the three of you again?

Dwarf Barbarian

I think the 3 of us again... Don't see a reason at this point to alter the original plan.

Original plan was Gilgar leads with Nox, then Graymoon, yes?

Male Elf Druid 4

yes

The trio move cautiously into the smoke. The tunnel widens a bit and divides into two, but it's pretty clear that both go to the same place.

Assuming you continue along the left wall:

A loud crackling sound fills the room. The smoke that pours from it is blistering hot and lit with a strange orange light. A massive forge responsible for the hellish atmosphere takes up the entire far wall of the cavern.
Between the forge and the entrance stands a massive anvil, and nearby rest hammers, prongs, and other blacksmithing tools. A faint whimpering sound is almost lost in the roar that comes from the forge.

The smoke is thicker here. You can just make out the shape of the massive anvil and possibly some movement near it. The sound of the hammer on steel is obviously very close, very steady. The room literally glows orange with all of the smoke being backlit by the massive forge.

PAUSE

Hold that thought. Before we go any further, we are going to level up. I think I've held off too long - the hound was more challenge than he should have been.

New features that require rest or study are not available, but hit points, BAB, saves and such are. You get half of your newly-rolled hp immediately and will get the other half upon healing. Any questions about whether a feature is available or not, let me know.

Dwarf Barbarian

Gilgar has been updated... FINALLY...

Male Elf Druid 4

Ditto for Nox

Sorry for the delay - Graymoon is also updated other than hit points.

Roll #1: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Roll #2: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Gah, that sucks.

So, is there a plan?

Find the bad guys, and kill 'em...

Male Elf Druid 4

Nox needs to identify the ring we took off the skeletons earlier

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 identify magic item

The DC for that check is 18, for future reference. You may retry the check again tomorrow.

Nox has a vague notion that the ring is appropriate to be found in a monastery once dedicated to Torag, but he cannot recall the specifics.

Restating the scene:

You can make out some movement on the other side of the anvil.

Dwarf Barbarian

Gilgar strides a few steps toward the forge, listening for the direction the whimpering came from...

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Figures. lol

"Ye ain't never heard uh VENTS?!?!?" Gilgar bellows "Quit yer bangin' an' clankin', an' talk fer a minute!"

Gilgar strides up to the near side of the anvil and bellows.

Gilgar:
A dwarf-like figure slams a massive hammer into a link of chain, ignoring your demand. He (or she?) is completely covered in chains, some of which glow in the heat. You can make out that the chain is covered with hooks and barbs and must hurt the wearer a great deal. Oddly, it seems that the smoke issues forth from the figure as much as from the forge behind him.

Bound in chain and leaning against the anvil, you can see two figures, one stout and unmoving, the other small and feebly struggling.

Nox:
Assuming you move forward a bit, you realize there is (obviously) someone working at the anvil, but there are two bodies at its base, also. One is unmoving and somehow familiar, but it's hard to know why in the current air conditions. The second is smaller, halfling or child, and struggles feebly.

Dwarf Barbarian

DM:
Just how big is the chain-covered figure?

Gilgar:
A little larger than Gilgar, but similarly-proportioned. The added bulk might actually be chain - there's a lot of it. In game terms, he is Medium, same as the PCs.

Dwarf Barbarian

Tightening his grip on his axe and eyeing the forge-worker menacingly, Gilgar says "Git th' kid an' th'other... Jus' drag 'em away." Gilgar will move to make sure he's got a clear line of quick attack if he needs it.

Male Elf Druid 4

Nox will move forward to the 2 chained figures on the floor. Does he gain anymore information from being up close?

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8stealth
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13perception

The ranger moves to help Nox.

Nox:
You are a little shocked to recognize Aggo, the dwarven monk that originally joined you when you entered the forest. He was last seen with the halfling cleric, taking ingredients back to town. He appears to be sleeping fitfully and doesn't look healthy.

As Nox scrapes his foot on the stone floor, however, he opens an eye and regards you. You realize the 'fitful' sleep has allowed him to worry and work at his bonds. With a little help, he and the boy might be freed quickly.

Gilgar circles the anvil to the right as the rescuers move to the left.

The smoky smith bellows out a warning at Nox' approach.

Dwarf Barbarian

"That yer doggy we kil't a couple minutes ago?"

The smoky smith turns toward the barbarian and roars, smoke billowing from his mouth.

What the heck, let's roll for initiative.

Male Elf Druid 4

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 Nox initiative

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Dwarf Barbarian

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Gilgar roars right back and attacks...

GM Screen:
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Gilgar has enough room to charge or he can move forward and swing. He's up, followed by Nox.

Dwarf Barbarian

Gilgar flies into a rage, launching himself at the thing...

2-handed Dwarven Waraxe Attack + Raging: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 = 12
Dwarven Waraxe 2-handed damage + Raging: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

I sure hope flat-footed makes a diff...

Less than you would hope, I'm afraid.

Gilgar charges the chain-shrouded dwarf. Nox is up!
