[Pathfinder Encounters] Exam Gone Wrong (Inactive)

Absalom’s Arcanimirium is known far and wide as one of the finest Mage Schools in Golarion. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when you learn that it was the institution of choice for the first Flumph wizard in history. Although Idikiukup (the aforementioned student) had no aptitude for magic, he did possess an enormous amount of money and a willingness to learn. His road to wizardry was a long and arduous one, and he was consistently ranked in the bottom of his class. Eventually though, “Fumbles” (as he was ‘affectionately’ called by the other students) was ready to take the exit exam. Although the examination room is magically warded, the testing instructors still fear for the safety of the school – after all, “idiot-proof” just means you haven’t found the right idiot. As a precaution, you’ve been hired to observe Fumbles’ examinations. Just as a precaution, of course. When they offered you 800gp apiece to keep an eye on him, you jumped at the chance. Easiest task ever!

The exams have gone surprisingly well thus far, and there’s now only one test left. Fumbles has to demonstrate his mastery of the Conjuration school of magic by summoning an animal of some sort. A dog. A small viper. Perhaps an eagle? If he can summon a creature inside the specially-marked circle, command it to carry out a simple task, and then dismiss it, Fumbles will graduate.

Whenever you’re ready, dot the Gameplay and Discussion threads. Then I’ll put up a map, and we can get started.

Dotting in. Had to start a new alias cause I am using this character in another recruitment. If you could go over my character I would really appreciate it.

Fumbles nervously mutters to himself as he begins his spell. Even to those untrained in the arcane arts, something seems 'off' with his casting mechanics.

Initiatives please.

Yvanesh shakes his head as he notices the mistakes. He appreciates the effort of Fumbles but does not approve forcing such a delicate art. He still does not know what is being conjured however.

Spellcraft to understand the spell: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
Knowledge, Arcana for the conjured creature if applicable: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

I may not be able to post frequently over the weekend, so if my turn comes and I don't respond immediately, assume that Yvanesh will move to a safer spot if he's in a threatened area before casting Mage Armor on himself. He'll also shout out anything he learns.

Aeron watches the incompetent young man, noticing his errors despite his utter lack of arcane experience. 'His form is all wrong, so awkward...' He suddenly realizes why he was hired for this job and removes his bow, putting an arrow to the string.

Init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

1d8 ⇒ 6
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Yvanesh shouts a warning as Fumbles completes his spell. A portal opens, and three Fiendish Hyenas appear. The summon was successful! Unfortunately, the portal seems to be stuck open, and more creatures can be seen inside. Even worse, Fumbles seems unable to control the (very hungry-looking) creatures.

M

As long as nothing gets in the way, minus the terrain of course, Raed will move to the closest target and Grapple, even if the target comes to him.

Grapple: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

RAAAAAAAAAH

Raed moves up to the closest Hyena, but it proves too slippery for him.

Raed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 4) + 6 = 12

The hyenas proceed to tear into him and Fumbles, inflicting grievous wounds. (Fumbles takes 10pts damage, Raed takes 12pts damage)

Male Tiefling Alchemist 2 HP 20/20, AC 18(20), Init: +5, Saves: F+4, R +5, W +0

Xarol curses "Why does it never go smoothly!" He mixes two vials together and then heaves it next to the hyenas.

Attack roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Aeron brings his bow up as he takes a few stesp to clear his line of sight to the hyena. Once in position he smoothly draws back the string to his cheek. Once he feels the stiff fletching brush against his cheek, he releases the string with a sharp snap as his arrow streaks towards it's target.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Okay, retcon time. :-) Sorry for the mix-up.

With agile grace, Brimie leaps over to the central platform. Unfortunately, he tumbles for a fraction of a second too long, and his attack goes wide. The Hyenas promptly proceed to rip into the two delicious-looking targets. Fumbles takes the brunt of the assault and goes down in a spray of blood. Brimie doesn't escape unscathed, though, as he takes a nasty bite to the leg (take 5pts damage) Xarol tosses a bomb that showers two of the Hyenas in fire. They dodge the worst of the explosion but fail to escape completely unscathed. Raed and Aeron's attacks miss by the merest fraction of a hair.

RAH you slippery little beast. Raed forgoes the grapple in favor of taking down a weakened opponent and punches one of the hyenas in the face. From where I am i'll strike at the hyena that has a 4 on it. I assume they are the ones who took damage from Xarol. If one of them dies before that I'll punch the closet one.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
1d4 ⇒ 2

Xarol, Raed, and Yvanesh burn, punch, and blast two of the Hyenas. They dissipate as they die, and the mist from their bodies is sucked back into the summoning portal - which dims slightly. The sole remaining Hyena takes a half-hearted snap at Raed but is easily dodged. Suddenly, an Eagle flies through the portal and attacks Brimie! He's able to dodge the talons, but the creature's beak catches him in the shoulder (take 2pts damage).

Xarol realizes that there might be more enemies forthcoming "We have to guard Fumbles, or we won't get paid!"

He moves to F7 and then spends a standard action giving a potion of cure light wounds to fumbles. Healing: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

I know this will trigger AoOs from both the hyena and hawk. AC is 20 currently

Yvanesh's missile causes the Eagle to disippate. Once again, Raed and Aeron barely miss the last Hyena - as does Brimie. Meanwhile, Xarol risks life and limb to save Fumbles from bleeding out; he absorbs a nasty Hyena bite in the process (and takes 5pts damage from an unconfirmed crit). The portal glows again, and a Dire Rat appears. The agile Brimie is easily able to dodge its snapping teeth.

Working together, you're able to bring down both creatures just as a Viper slithers out of the portal. It tries to bite Xarol but misses.

New Round
Your turns

GM Reference: 5 dead

Xarol/Yvanesh:
The portal appears to be connected to Fumbles - as are the summoned creatures that keep appearing. Death weakens the connection, and you can see that the portal energy has grown very dim. It also appears to be a two-way portal, and you're pretty sure that a person - or a well-aimed projectile - could enter.

Male Tiefling Alchemist 2 HP 20/20, AC 18(20), Init: +5, Saves: F+4, R +5, W +0

"Killing the summons makes the portal weaker, keep at it, I'm going to try something!" Xarol pulls one of his few remaining bombs and chucks it towards the still open portal.

Eat fire whatever's on the opposite side! 1d6+7 if it hits something, or 8 splash damage. I only have one more bomb left, so hopefully this will do the trick.

Brimie and Raed work together to take down the Viper before it can do any damage. As usual, it disintegrates, and its life essence is sucked back through the portal. Thinking quickly, Xarol tosses a bomb in after it. There's a flash of fire, and the portal vanishes.

Raed Stares at the spot the punching bags were coming out of and then looks menacingly at Xarol.

"Bah, silly dwarf. Closing that portal was the best way to save our skins, and our payday.
