"Protection can be arranged for those that wish to do the right thing and aid us."
| DM DoctorEvil |
The grippli swallows hard, his eyes shifting around. "Ok, ok! I'll talk. Just don't kill me..."
He begins blubbering in barely intelligible Common. The upshot is that Alejia has moved on ahead. She should be aboard a ship called the Topaz Titan, leaving Mumbuckle in temporary command of the Lionfish.
After a bit more pressing he says that he was supposed to take the Lionfish out to sea to rendezvous with Alejia. He is supposed to meet her at sundown on Moonday, which is in two days. The rendezvous is supposed to be at a place called Viper Cove.
Knowledge Local or Geography (or perhaps Profession Sailor) checks to see if anyone knows about Viper Cove.

Knowledge (Geography): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Juis speaks up and reveals what he knows about the Viper Cove.
| DM DoctorEvil |
Both Juis and Nylthe have heard of Viper Cove, which is a cavernous rock of an island about a half-day's sail from Riddleport. The exact location of the pirate hangout is not immediately known by any of the Pathfinders, and is a closely guarded secret among the brotherhood of buccaneers based in town.
In order to make the rendezvous, you'll need to find someone to pilot the ship and also find coordinates to Viper Cove.
Wilen Proudbrew
|
But surely our grippli "friend" here knew how he was going to reach Viper Cove. Let's have him take us there.
| DM DoctorEvil |
For his part, Mumbuckle seems at a loss. "If I had a mind, I could probably get the ship sailed out of the harbor, but the I'd have to follow the plotted coordinates that Alejia gave me. The chart and plot are in the captain's cabin."

Sense motive: 1d20 ⇒ 2 Nothing. Anybody else?
Nylthe Shadowbound

Nylthe isn't sure how to respond to Mumbuckle's offer, so she defaults to her typical suspicion. "We don't need him doing something foolish and alerting his mistress to our arrival." Turning to Mumbuckle she continues, "Show us these charts."
Sense Motive: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3
Sigh, if Aconite were out, he'd be much better at sniffing out the truth
Juis Helfro

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Just missed it.
"The Captain's Cabin you say. While the rest of us continue to guard these guys, someone go check the cabin."
| DM DoctorEvil |
The Captain's quarters is poshly decorated for aboard ship, and has many charts and maps laid out on a table. On the top chart, a grease pencil has been used to mark a course and large X has been drawn at a point where the chart shows only open sea.
Laying around the cabin are a few other items of value: a MW hook hand, 5 barrels of rum, and a large ornate treasure chest with a sextant inside.
So your plan is going with Mumbuckle to sail you on the course marked on the map? Do any of you have Profession: sailor or related skills?
Nylthe Shadowbound
|
Nylthe will bring Aconite back from the Shadows. Her own sense of direction is terrible above ground, so she doesn't trust it to double check the Grippli.
Survival: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3
Aconite.
|
Aconite's sense of such things is less dependent on being somewhere he'd call home.
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Once he's out, would it be kosher for Aconite to roll Sense Motive? Or has the moment passed?
Juis Helfro
|
Looking over the map, knowing geography but not sailing, he can't be much help. He does address the Grippli though.
"Remember, for us to protect you must be honest with us and not try to betray us." he says in a gentle tone.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
| DM DoctorEvil |
"Ok, yeah sure." says Mumbuckle. "So you want to go to Viper Cove but you don't know the heading? Or how you want the sail's trimmed? Guess I am still captain then, eh?" He laughs an ugly croaking sound and starts shouting orders to any of the crew that are still in one piece. The anchor chain starts to come up and the crew sets out a course or two of canvas, enough to navigate out of the harbor at least.
"You just sit back, and Old Mumbuckle'll get you out of Riddleport safe and sound!"
Aconite can try to sense motive if you like, if he makes it you can read the spoiler above.
Wilen Proudbrew
|
Wilen watches Aconite's reaction and sighs.
Looks like we're locking this one up and finding us a more trustworthy navigator. I guess it was too much to hope this frog would try to get in a good deed before he answers for his wrongdoings.
Marianna Nicos
|
Marianna looks at Aconite and pauses for a moment. "I trust Aconite more than the grippi, but I don't know how to sail.... Wait. Didn't we do this on shore?"
| DM DoctorEvil |
Marianna remembers the dour dwarven angler, Smultwarts Gultrock, who rowed them out to the Lionfish. Her small craft is slowly crawling away from the ship, but is still within hailing distance.
You also have a day and a half to find a suitable pilot for the craft should you need to return to Riddleport and start looking around.
What do you do with Mumbuckle the Untrustworthy?
Juis Helfro
|
Juis goes to the edge of the deck facing the direction of Smultwarts Gultrock and yells as loud as he can. "GULTROCK! RETURN TO THE SHIP. WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE."
Nylthe Shadowbound
|
"Let's just stash him in Captain Heidmarch's basement for now. We can devise something more suitable later."
| DM DoctorEvil |
The dwarven fisherwoman hears Juis call and waves, slowly steering the small craft back alongside the Lionfish. Her dour countenance has not improved with all the rowing back and forth. "What in the name of Torag's grey beard do you want now?" she grumps at you from under a pair of bushy eyebrows. "Do you princesses need a ride back to the wharf?"
Juis Helfro
|
Juis smiles down at the dwarven woman, "Actually we could use a skilled sails-woman such as yourself to captain this ship elsewhere."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
| DM DoctorEvil |
"Yeah, well, what's that ta me? Are ye asking me to captain the ship for ye? And what, pray tell, is in it for me? Maybe I've got me catch to clean an' my fishin' gear back on t' wharf. An' who's to say I'm a ship's pilot in t'first place, eh?"
Wilen Proudbrew

Sense motive: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Oh, I'm sure there can be something in it for you. We're on official Pathfinder business and I'm sure we can have the society pay you for your services if you wouldn't mind accompanying us to the local office.
| DM DoctorEvil |
As Okuru offers up the ship in compensation, Gultrock looks about the vessel admiringly. "She is a pretty little thing. Agreed. I will take the ship in exchange for getting you to...where did you say you needed to go again?"
After a few moments contemplating the course and charts left in the captain's quarters, Gultrock merely shrugs. "This chart says there's nothing out there, but if that's where you want to go, I'm happy to sail my ship out there and drop you off. Hope you've learnt to row since a few minutes ago." She spits in her hand and offers to shake, the sign of a binding pledge.
Provided you agree, the dwarven sailor starts shouting orders to the crew about "Hoist"this and "Avast" that. And soon you are underway, headed to a rendezvous with Alejia at a place that may or may not actually be there.
Last chance for anything before you leave civilization or what passes for such in Riddleport.
Juis Helfro
|
Juis spits in his hand and takes the dwarf's hand tho confirm the agreement. "Glad to have your help Captain." He smiles warmly.
Juis Helfro
|
Juis chuckles, "Or tie him to a rope and drag him along behind our wake. We might catch a huge shark or something."
| DM DoctorEvil |
After half a day's journey to sea, and just as the setting sun makes further visibility next to impossible, you see the looming shape of land on the horizon. Gultrock is surprised as any of you. "That's not on the charts!" she calls, steering the ship towards the massive rock formation as the light ebbs.
The only landing point on the rocky inlet called Viper Cove seems to be through a cavern entrance that leads to a shallow cove concealed within the rock itself. The walls of the cavern are lined intermittently with torch-adorned sconces, and another ship is already moored on the northeastern side of the embankment - Topaz Titan is emblazoned across her hull in orange letters that shine brillantly even in the limited light. Several hastily-sealed cans of paint, a wood rasp, and sandpaper are barely visible on the ship's deck. On the eastern side of the large cavern, two exits lead further into the cave complex.
Gultrock rides the ship right up to the sandy shoals and beaches her gently next to the Topaz Titan. Disembarking, your feet crunch on the rocks of the shingle, but you see no one. Several crates and barrels are lined up against the far wall, as if the ship were unloaded here for some reason.
Wilen Proudbrew
|
Wilen eyes the other ship, also noticing the sandpaper and paint.
So... someone would have us believe this is the Topaz Titan. Do we want to search this ship first or head further into the caves to find its possible crew?
Juis Helfro
|
"How about setting fire to the ship and then heading further in?"
Wilen Proudbrew
|
That seems a bit extreme, and if they return via one path while we've taken another then they'd be encouraged to take our ship.
Marianna Nicos
|
"Okay, Does anyone feel confidant in sneaking forward and doing a little scouting?" Marianna quietly asks, looking more toward Wilen and Aconite.
