So Alafair's Flare last round had no effect? Not that it really mattered since his attack missed Thovar anyway...But it might have stopped him from calling out.
Alafair launches another Magic Missile at the remaining sailor, ready for this battle to be over.
Magic Missile Dmg: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Thovar tries his luck again, but is rather unsteady on the swaying deck, barely even managing to swing.
"Bah! Abadar may have blessed my feet, but dwarves were never meant for the sea!"
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

After another desperate glance to the entrance to the lower decks the sailor snarls and hurls himself at Thovar. But the dwarfs armour thwarts the hammer blow.
Everyone is up!
Sailor vs Thovar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Certain the man is going to fall anytime, Alafair sends another unerring blast of energy his way, hoping to speed the process before the 'Captain' shows up.
Fire another magic missile at the sailor

Assuming on-board ship is not difficult terrain
Lia moves around behind the deckhouse and gets into a position opposite Rogar to attack the sailor when she gets a chance.

![]() |

Thovar swings his hammer, hopefully for the final blow!
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I was starting to like him!!!! I hope he lives still! XD

![]() |

Thovar mutters a prayer of healing and lets Abadar's energy wash over the party and the fallen enemy.
channel energy to heal: 1d6 ⇒ 2

![]() |

Thorvar I owe you a pint of RPG beer, you big hearted fellow!! :)
As the sailor falls Rogar turns his attention to the others:"I guess we just need to search below deck, our prize should be waiting for us there..."

![]() |

Thovar's channeling stops the worst of the fellows wounds, and his blood ceases to flow, he should live thanks to the clerics intervention.
Moving down below decks the group see fifty filth encrusted oar slaves bleeding from lacerations and open sores, all slumped in sleep or exhaustion - all appear to be male. The benches form a five-foot-wide aisle down the centre of the galley constricting movement in all but three areas: a 10ft diameter around the main mast, slightly fore of midship, and the extreme ends of the galley which hold rooms.
At the fore of the galley another hulking gnoll glowers at you standing in front of a sealed door. Behind the gnoll is a familiar figure, the Vudrani slave seller Pardu Pildapush, clutching a dagger and drenched in sweat.
Please describe how you move down, etc., and place yourselves on the map accordingly.

![]() |

Lia's first move would be to check for any portholes or ways down that would allow her to remain concealed from those in the main room.

![]() |

Following Rogar as has been her custom in dangerous situations, Alafair goes down the stairs behind him at the aft side of the boat. Before she descends, she uses her Wand of Mage Armor once again, to renew the sizzling arcane protection around her skin.
"It looks like these rats have yet to flee the ship!" she says to the others when the slaver and his gnoll ally are seen. "Let's take them and free these poor wretches, even if we don't find our noblewoman."

![]() |

Tromos strides over to the western stairs, watching his allies for a cue.
Double move.
From his pack he draws another vial and uncorks it, releasing a white vapor to mix with the sea breeze. Tossing his head back, the elf downs the mixture in one gulp. He snaps his back up straight as the mutagen takes hold, his skin drawing taught around lengthening fingers, and muscles contorting into a more sinuous form.
Drink mutagen. +4 Dex, +2 natural armor, -2 Will for 20 minutes.

"Give us a signal when you want a surprise," Lia whispers to Rogar. She then sheathes her rapier and draws her shortbow as she makes her way to the Western set of stairs.
If possible, readied action to leap into the hole and fire at the nearest opponent on Rogar's signal.

Before going below deck Rogar nods at Lia and Alfair:"Yes, let's do that. I will engage the captain and whoever is with him, be ready to flank them or to deal with any members of the crew, please"
As Rogar enters the lower deck he's greeted by the smell of the unwashed humanity held captive therein. The Taldan warrior sets his eyes on the gnoll and the Vudrani and walks purposefully towards them:"Oh? Hello there. I'm still searching for what I was promised. I trust this is the right ship... isn't it? And I feel I must complain about the crew. They were most rude and I had to teach them to respect their betters... But enough of that: I'm Lord Jaquo Dalsine and I demand the merchandaise I was told I would find here!"
Rogar moves up to the central part of the ship and talks from there. Sword in hand. He tries to bluff the two slavers. If they are not fooled he readies an attack against the first opponent threatening him.
Bluff check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7
Attack roll (readied): 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 - 1 = 24
Damage roll (readied): 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 4) + 9 = 17

No readying out of combat, you may only ready if initiative has been rolled. If you all constantly ready I'll just have my NPCs do the same and then we have a massive waste of time. Outside of initiative order readying is covered by the surprise round rules.
The gnoll only snarls and Pildapush bite shis lip nervously and calls, "You would be best to flee and leave this matter well enough alone. Captain Bonegatherer is not so named for his gentle disposition. Leave this is none of your concern why die for a stranger?"

![]() |

Thovar follows Rogar belowdecks, shocked at the horrid living conditions for the slaves below. Scowling, he and casts divine favor on himself, muttering, "Abadar, let me smite down those who would commit such sacrilege as trading in human flesh!"

![]() |

Rogar makes a gesture of surprise and smiles amiably:"The dog there... IT would be the captain? Then that means the other doggie we just disemboweled was not the ship's mascot??? What was it? This one's "cabin boy"? If so I'm mightyly sorry, but it does not change the matter in the slightest: we want Lady Anilah Salhar and we are going to take her, the only question is if we add an ugly dog's skin and a sweaty slave trader's head to the bargain or not. So... tell me which way do you like more?"
Intimidation check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

![]() |

The gnoll snarls, "Rrrrrghhhgh, I think you talk a lot, but are not good at it. You yip like a runt trying to cow its betters, come little runt. Perhaps when I am done I will wear a coat of your skin!"
Gnoll and slaver ready themselves.
Everyone is up!
Crossing the slave filled benches is clearly going to be very difficult and requires a DC 15 climb to move at 1/4 speed.
Thovar Init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Rogar Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Pildapush Init: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Captain Bonegatherer: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

![]() |

You mean we CAN cross the benches OR we can stick to the central path between the benches, right? In that case no penalties? Also, climb and not acrobatics? Also: I imagine I can't charge him from my current position, right?
Rogar laughs loudly:"Seems to me you are the one who likes to talk, little doggie, but I don't see you coming here to get me... so who's scared between you and me?

![]() |

Moving over a bench might be acrobatics if they were unoccupied, but because they are packed with rowers and oars I'm calling it climb. The scenario seems to give no rules, but appears to assume they are impassable.
The gnoll throws back its head and gives a long yipping laugh, gesturing for Rogar to come with the hand holding a whip, like its comrade its other hand holds an axe.

![]() |

Rogar shrugs and advances with deliberate calm towards the two villains:"Very well... if you fear me that much I cannot but oblige you, doggie..."

Tromos nimbly descends the stairs and wheels about to face the captain.
Better for us all I did not prepare any incendiary weapons today.
Reaching into his diminished stash, he lobs another chambered flask at the gnoll.
Frost Bomb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Sending a flash of arcane electricity sparking into the air, Alafair tries to blind Pildapesh evening the odds a bit for Rogar who advanced into the thick of it.

Lia is setting herself the same way as before. If one of the enemies gets close enough or Rogar signals, she'll drop down into the hole and fire her shortbow.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 to take no damage from the drop

Thovar moves up behind Rogar and casts longstrider on himself. "May Abadar help me move quickly to defeat these foes!"

![]() |

I take the Gnoll doesn't do anything else besides putting the flames off, right? If so I'll post my next action
Rogar covers the distance separating him from the gnoll and slashes down with all of his might:"Well... here we go, doggie! Show me your guts!"

Apologies folks time got a way from me a bit this morning.
Rogar moves in to attack, but the gnoll's whip lashes out and drags the fighter to his feet when he is ten feet away even as the gnoll steps forward to loom over his laughing!
Pildapush backs up blade held before him defensively, panic in his eyes.
"Yipahahahehehhaha!"
Rogar you are prone, but you still have a standard action.
Everyone is up!
Whip Trip vs Rogar: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Rogar scoffs"Laugh now, doggie... you will cry later!"
Going total defense

![]() |

Do the slaves look like they might be able to help if healed, or are they suffering from some other sort of condition like exhaustion?
Thovar steps slightly forward and throws a throwing axe at the gnoll, but in the crowded ship it is very difficult to hit his target without accidentally hurting anyone else, and his axe thuds harmlessly into the floor.
1d20 ⇒ 3

Snorting in frustration as the fighter goes down, Tromos reaches to his bandolier to find only one freezing flask remaining. He spends a moment to gaze at the vial longingly, before flipping through another pouch pinned next to his quiver. With two fingers he draws a thin stoppered bottle of some swashing green liquid, and with two others he plucks an arrow.
A pop of a cork and a stretch of a bowstring, and the second flask falls to the deck, inert, while the drawn arrowhead sizzles with a corrosive sheen.
Move action to infuse arrow with acid flask (Alchemical Weapon), attack gnoll.

Alafair's blast hits home, and the gnoll snarls as it brings his axe down in a vicious blow which Rogar's blade just manages to deflect aside enough to prevent him being put out of the fight entirely!
Pildapush backs up into the corner dagger still raised defensively and cries, "Finish him Captain!"
Rogar takes 8 damage.

Tromos knocks another arrow and prepares to strike the gnoll captain, but thinks better of it. With his friends and foes cramped into such tight quarters, he despairs of getting a clear shot even with his mutagenic enhancements. Drawing yet another flask from his cavernous pack, he pops the top on a bit of chemical assistance.

Thovar's mighty blow staves in the gnolls skull and he falls to the deck dark fluids oozing from his mouth and blood streaming from his misshapen eye socket!
Pildapush screams as the gnoll goes down cursing in Vudrani, but raises his dagger defiantly evidently not ready to surrender.
Rogar and Alafair are up!
