Bummer. If you sway her to friendly, she gives you loot.
You head beneath the waves. Presumably, you prep for underwater travel?
Feel free to buff appropriately.
A dozen ruined buildings lie scattered across the sea floor, though a single building in the very center of them all appears almost completely intact. While some of the sunken buildings have clearly lain wrecked for centuries, a fact made clear by the overgrowth of algae and seaweed, others appear to have collapsed quite recently.
The orb glows more brightly as you approach the site.
There are four undines busily reinforcing one of the ruined buildings, clearly struggling to keep the pile of rubble from collapsing.
When you spot them, you are 90 feet away. You can take one action before the next stuff happens. Since I'm not entirely sure how you've prepped for underwater activity, I want to pause here to let everyone consider their options. I'm also fine with you all having purchased stiff from the aquatic elf captain, if you forgot anything. :)

Harrow had spent a short time preparing for the underwater excursion, having quaffed his potion of underwater breathing, as well as having cast expeditious retreat so he could swim (or retreat, if necessary) faster.
"Harrow good swimmer," he boasts before they go under.
Seeing the undines ahead, Harrow chuckles to himself.
Sound like undin-wear!
Try diplomacy first? These could just be fixing recently-destroyed buildings?
"Underwater guys! Harrow see buildings fall down...need help?" he shouts, though his voice doesn't carry very far underwater. He holds up his hands in peace.

It's a Christmas miracle! :)

Nice roll! That will make a difference. She gives the party:
a pair of underwater goggles for each of you (no longer need to make Fort saves underwater due to the silt)
a belt of incredible dexterity +2 that the undines recovered from a shipwreck (only one)
a pair of gloves of swimming and climbing for each of you
a circlet of persuasion (only one)
These items may change how you approach the undines underwater. It also now allows you to attempt perception checks (yay, goggles!) to notice stuff. (You are not required to attempt the perception check if you feel that your character wouldn't. For example, they're too focused on the undines.)

Mareq Knowledge Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Before you cast Bull's Strength, let me give you some info. Then you can decide if you want to cast the spell. I didn't offer Harrow the same option because he doesn't have knowledge engineering. Mareq and Harrow are also the first PCs close enough to have attempted the engineering inspection.
Watching Harrow and the undines, Mareq realizes several facts:
(1) someone or something is trapped beneath the rubble that the undines struggle to hold up
(2) holding it up is a losing tactic because the structure itself is crumbing and will crush those underneath no matter what
(3) with several successive knowledge engineering or disable device checks, you can prop up the structure and save whoever is underneath
The roll I made for you at the top of this post can count as your first success. But, if you choose to use it that way, it's also your standard action this turn.

![]() |

"Master!" calls Mareq, pointing. "Somebody or something is stuck under there!"
No to the Bulls Strength. Yes to the Knowledge (engineering) rolls.
How far is this something/somebody?

![]() |

How far is this something/somebody?
Under the midst of the partially collapsed rubble there are two undines trapped. It's not just a matter of reaching them, because the structure has already partially collapsed upon them.
Since your engineering roll was really high, you can have this bit of meta-info: Mechanically, at the end of each full round in which fewer than four creatures hold the rubble, the pile partially collapses some more. Once you succeed at some number of checks, they're considered to be free of the collapse.

![]() |

Harrow is helping. It takes a minimum of 4 creatures to hold up the rubble. (I suppose for the sake of balancing the mess.) And he took over after one of the undines passed out from the strain.
Will Save: 1d20 ⇒ 6, FAIL! :)
Combat is essentially over. But, we need to stay in rounds because of the trapped creatures. We need some additional successes for the collapsing rubble.
Harrow, Husarq, Mareq, Berosius, and Zaxxle may attempt one of the following checks:
(1) Knowledge engineering
(2) Disable device
(3) Some other skill creatively applied to the situation, for example: Profession architect

![]() |

Though Harrow doesn't know how to stabilize the structure, maybe Ragathiel will help him know how.
wisdom assist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 I don't have any of those skills, but maybe this can assist someone else?

![]() |

Harrow begins to really put his back into lifting the rubble. But the structure is so weakened that it begins to crack on the opposite side!
Mareq, his mind racing with the geometric ramifications, quickly instructs the burly half-orc to pull back a bit.
We need at least two more checks, unless you have something clever (e.g. dim door) to use.

![]() |

"Harrow need little more help!" he says, his massive muscles flexing spectacularly.
Let's get a couple more aid checks, guys!

![]() |

Husarq swims down to the first trapped undine and grabs him/her.
"Weakling Half-Breed-Piece-of-Salamander-Shit! Transpose yourself with me, NOW!" shouts Husarq at Mareq.
Obeying his Master, Mareq concentrates and feels his body dissolving and reappearing beneath the collapsing structure next to the remaining undine.
Transposition ability. Basically DDoor, switching position with eidolon.
"Hold on," Mareq says to the remaining undine, grabbing him/her.
I hope Harrow can hold it for just a second more, thinks the ifrit. Then, when he can, he concentrates, warping the surrounding planar barrier until he and the undine can slip through, reappearing near Husarq and the first trapped (now safely rescued) undine.
Mareq uses Transposition, and then a casting of Dimension Door to rescue the two undines. This requires two rounds, of course, during which he cannot do a Knowledge (engineering) check.

![]() |

After a couple of tense moments where it seemed like the structure might collapse, Mareq directs Berosius, Harrow, Husarq, Kelson, and even Zaxxle where to prop up the structure. Then, to get the survivors out as quickly as possible...
*POP*

As soon as the bodies are out of the structure, it collapses in upon itself. Counter-intuitively, this reveals loot:
one heavy underwater crossbow with 10 bolts
four masterwork cestuses
one +1 tiger fork
one +2 trident
one wand of mage armor with 35 charges remaining
The undines are grateful for your assistance.
Take whatever time you need to regroup. One of the two trapped undines was the missing wife.
"It is fortunate that you were here to render aid. Thank you all! But it is very unusual to see creatures such as yourselves so comfortable beneath the waves. What brings you here?"

![]() |

Counter-intuitively, this reveals loot.
rofl
Harrow is glad they were able to save the undines. "Harrow so strong, he save everybody!" he brags.
Once they have regrouped, he responds to the creatures.
"We looking for lost school...you know where we find it?" he asks.

"School? We found these ruined remains 5 years ago. Several buildings were intact, while other were piles of rubble. Some of the intact buildings, like the one that collapsed on Zulfibha and Rirzik, contained stone tablets demonstrating martial techniques. There's one building we've never been able to enter. Even approaching it will upset the guardians who watch over it."
The orb leads you in roughly the same direction as the building the undines describe. The guardians sound like water elementals to you.

![]() |

"Harrow think we in that building...that the one," he says as he squints through the water in the direction they describe.

![]() |

Feel free to chat among yourselves along the way if you feel that you need to prep for the next encounter.
One building stands tall among the wreckage of many others, with elegantly curved walls made from stone. Runes carved into the exterior glow brightly, and razor-edged coral reefs form a protective fence around the building’s perimeter. The building is 15 feet tall with no windows.
Two huge water elementals in the shape of powerfully built humanoids stand guard in front.

![]() |

Harrow continues treading water. As they look around the corner at the elementals, the half-orc decides to cast invisibility before the encounter.
"Harrow getting hungry..." he says randomly.

![]() |

Harrow frowns as he realizes he isn't as invisible as he had hoped underwater.
It's not until he checks the apple biscuits that his displeasure turns to outright rage.
I think we could try talking to them...we've got some pretty amazing diplomacy in this group. Harrow could assist with Kelson taking the lead?

Husarq |

Mareq fidgets as the talking to the elementals option is discussed.
"Ehhhh, errr, ummm, Master, I could suh- suh- summon an elemental to negotiate with these if--" stutters Mareq to Husarq. But before he can complete the sentence, Husarq SLAPS HIM, HARD across the face.
Husarq puts his red skinned face into Mareq's, his fangs showing and his hot, efreet breath sending bubbles of steam into Mareq's eyes.
"NO. You do not have the strength to hold both an elemental AND me on this plane. And you KNOW THAT, sneaky wretch," says Husarq menacingly. "You aren't sneaky enough, you half-breed maggot! Next time, remember this punishment and be more subtle when you attempt to enslave me again!"
Husarq proceeds to kick the ifrit summoner until he notices the others staring at his chastisement.
"He is a reckless fool, this one. The elementals are clearly bound and will not be able to allow us to pass. But, if you wish to speak with them before battle commences..." he says with a pseudo-courteous, mocking bow and wave of his hand at the elementals. "Be my guest."
He picks up the beaten Mareq and softly, nay, gently pushes him forward towards the elementals.
