User-Friendly Google Docs Character Sheet

Hello all,

Inspired by the Hero Handbook from the Beginner Box, I set out to make an intuitive, easy-to-use Character Sheet Generator on Google Docs. What I've created presents the player with lists of easy options in a simple format. It then generates a character sheet very similar to the one found at the back of the Core Rulebook.

It's a work in progress, but right now you can make a 1st-class character using any of the races, classes, feats, and gear found in the CRB. I'll be expanding to include levels 2-20 and the Advanced Player's Guide options soon. Sometime after that I'll include the Advanced Race Guide options, prestige classes and archetypes.

I'd love it for you to give it a test-drive and post your comments and constructive criticisms in this thread. I especially want it to be straightforward and easy for new players. I also aim to save players and GMs time. Let me know if it meets those two goals.

Thanks!

This looks fantastic. I'm not very familiar with Google Docs, but I believe you need to set it up as a template for people to get their own copy and edit it independent of the original?

WOOPS never mind I figured it out. I'll edit this in with the results of my first use of it and some suggestions/criticism later.

Okay, I've fiddled around with it a bit and I can already say that this makes character creation sooooo much easier. The only thing that's coming to mind that you don't seem to have already thought of was a place to put your starting gold and then a second slot that'll subtract the value of your starting equipment from that. I'd put this at like, bottom of the barrel priority though.

Once you've got the featured races and the APG classes filled in this'll likely replace the spreadsheet I'm currently using entirely. Good job and keep going.

Thanks Arachnofiend. I think if you can view it you can make a copy (should be an option in the 'File' dropdown menu). If I've made a mistake and it's not working for anyone, please let me know.

...How do I fill it in?
Edit: Never mind. I too figured it out.

You need to make a copy and then put "x's" in the indicated places (usually just to the left of each presented option).

This is just wonderful...

Oh now I've got a real suggestion: if you could come up with a way to detail situational modifiers like Power Attack that would be a blessing. This goes above and beyond anything I've seen elsewhere but it would be amazing if you could, for example, scroll over a weapon's name on your character sheet and see a listing of the modifiers that can apply to it and how much the stat changes when applied.

Or a check block that switches it on and off.

...That's a better suggestion go with that one

Phew. I'll put that one on the to-do list. I definitely see the need for it and I think I might just know how to do it.

Aristocrat, Commoner, and Warrior classes now available!

And there's the expert class. G'night!

Dot = .

Adept class now available. The Core Rulebook material is all accounted for.

Why are craft and profession between gnome and half-elf?

Gnomes receive a +2 to bonus on either Craft or Profession. I think it's a racial trait called Obsessive. Place an "x" in one of those two boxes to make your selection.

I tried to clear it up, labeling it and such.

EDIT: typo, update

Bottom-of-the-barrel priority notwithstanding, we now have character wealth on the Equipment page. It automatically deducts from the total as you select weapons and gear.

Couldn't someone put one of the existing behemoth excel generators to google doc? Or is there a compatibility issue? Or its readonly and won't work?

You got it! Now Power Attack is included in the Weapon fields on Sheet 1.

WOO!

The Cavalier class with 10 orders now available!

Samurai with 11 orders now available!

You didn't answer my question so I'm going to assume that this is redundant.

Sorry, I didn't know you were directing your question to me specifically, but to the Paizo community in general.

It's funny. I don't really know Excel though I've heard it has a lot in common with Google spreadsheets. I use Google docs because it can instantly be shared without e-mailing excel files.

So, to answer your question (or, sadly, not answer it), I don't know. Maybe somebody else reading this thread does....

Very nice!

You've mentioned that you're adding ACG, ARG, archetypes, and prestige classes. Are there any other books that are in scope?

May I also suggest adding the new weapons and armor found in Ultimate Equipment? It seems like they would be easy things to add in, unless there's something I'm not considering.

Just a tiny question? Maybe I did it wrong, but why is Int prime stat for summoners?
I thought they use cha for spells and their SM SLA.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm starting with the basics and building from there. So, yes, I'll put Ultimate Equipment on the list. But it may take me a little while to get to it.

My list in order of priority currently goes as follows:
1) Oracle class (for a player of mine)
2) Stat block page
3) CRB classes, levels 2-20
4) APG classes, levels 1-20
5) APG feats
6) ARG races
7) prestige classes from CRB & APG
8) archetypes
9) CRB magic items
10) UE equipment

EDIT: The above order might change and I'm taking special requests now that the sheet is off the ground.

Fixed!

I find it very odd you are familiar with Google sheets and not Excel. From everything I've seen when I last used it, Google Sheets is just a less complex version of Excel. It's essentially the same but without as many options like the difference between Word Pad and Microsoft Word. I think they've been slowly working to increase the functionality of their google "office" programs, but that's where it stands AFAIK.

Silver Crusade

This looks a little overly complex, but not enough so to keep me from using it. A request though, under Gender could you put an 'other' option? I have some players who like to play non-gender binary characters (some that don't have genders too, like androids), and it'd be cool to see those included.

I agree with you: it is odd. I think it comes down to the fact that Google docs is free and Microsoft Excel isn't. I bought Microsoft Office (including Excel) recently so I have it right now, but I've gone long stretches without having that program.

So, yeah, can totally see your point. But it's mostly just because I've been off-and-on poor.

Can you tell me exactly what seems overly complex about it? This is the kind of feedback I need to make it more user-friendly. What were the sticking points? And advice in general?

Heck, yes, I can do that. Gimme two minutes.
