Year of Boundless Wonder

The air grew still as Venture-Captain Dennel Hamshanks rolled into a meeting room deep inside the Pathfinder Lodge in Absalom, his jowls flowing and his enormous axe clanking against his thigh. The man’s black eyes scanned the room. “You lot?” Hamshanks spat. “Well, maybe you’ll surprise me."

“Your boat leaves in an hour, so I’ll be brief. One of the Society’s contacts in Andoran sent us an interesting little nugget this morning. A druid named Hemzel swept into Augustana’s Civic Library last week, demanding his right of research. Our contact learned that Hemzel acquired a lorestone from somewhere in the Verduran Forest. Heard of such a thing?” Hamshanks paused expectantly and spat again. “Of course not. Heard of druids, at least? And their crazy stone circles? Well thank Gorum for that. Lorestones are somehow connected to them — supposedly they can bestow you with all of the knowledge of the druids. We’d like to know how, so we want that stone and you’re going to get it for us."

“Unfortunately, the Society is not a friend to Hemzel. He’s the self-declared protector of the Verduran Forest inside Andoran’s borders and some of our more eager explorers have angered him and his little band of gnomes. He’s sworn a blood feud with the Pathfinders."

“Break out your skills of persuasion and get me that lorestone. Do what you need to — sweep the floors or plant some trees for the old man. Something nice — let him know we’re there to study and not to slash and burn.”

Begrilda's hand had traveled to her mouth to cover her gasp of surprise at what she initially thought their mission to be. So what, we're meant to take this stone from this Hemzel person by whatever means necessary? Oh blessed Maiden, what have I gotten myself into?

Her concerns are allayed, however, and she lets out a sigh of relief as Venture Captain Hamshanks explains that they would be tasked with repairing the damaged relationship between the druids and the Pathfinders rather than worsening it through violence. One question does arise for the dwarven priestess, however.

"Uh...pardon me, Venture Captain, but if Hemzel has sworn a blood oath against the Society, how will we be able to approach them peacefully in order to convince them of our good intentions and win them over? Perhaps we could bring some sort of peace offering?"

Marianna shudders at the thought of destruction. Adjusting her large, round glasses, "Of course we will impress upon Hemzel the importance of studying such an important artifact. Ms. Dralneen and the scholars in the archive will be able to learn much, I'm sure." She squares her small shoulders and puts on a smile, "And it will be nice to get outside for a change. I just hope there won't be too many bugs." she says making a face.

There he sat. His impressive bulk filling every square inch (or centimeter if you prefer) of the seat of the chair.. and then some. He shifted uncomfortably every few minutes, leaning one way and then the other. His large, meaty green hands rubbing his eyes once the door finally opened letting in a flood of bright light. His eyes widened, then squinted in pain, trying to see the figure that entered the meeting hall. Once he finally recognized the face, he stands up in a rush and runs over engulfing the stocky Dwarven woman in a big sweaty man hug "Begrilda! Hey dare! Luurg's not seen you since yer confurmation. Sorry, been out in da swamp. City too busy for me."

He lets her down then swats off the pesky chair still clinging to his backside. Behind her he sees another familiar face in Bishop "Oh hey dare quiet guy Bishop! Hows you?" He gives him a thunderous handshake, which upon releasing leaves an expected sticky sweet residue behind.

As the others stream in he gives them slightly less exuberant welcomes, but not too much so. "Hey there half lady! I'm Luurg Murkdweller. I be yer guide on dis mission! Do you know Janira? She half lady just like you. Mebe you be kin?"

He steps back and adjusts his belt, which happens to be loaded down with a dizzying array of fruits, not the least of which includes apples, bananas, and coconuts, not to mention an assortment of others you aren't quite sure of. He stands well over 6 feet tall and 300lbs (especially if you include his rotund belly). A dingy, but apparently well made chain shirt wrestles with his girth in a nonstop struggle to the death, currently at a stalemate it seems. A spear leans up against the wall nearby, strategically placed to sit in a beam of sunshine that falls upon it and its.. branches of green leaves?

Captain o Captain!

Luurg salutes the VC when he heads into the room "Hi Bossman, I'm Luurg, good to be doin work fer you." He shakes his hand vigorously as well, they make a similar pair of well fed individuals. "I know about dem Droods. Some ok, some not ok. Always gut pet dogs and birds hangin' 'round. They big fans of nice fruit." He smiles his perfect set of shiny white teeth, impeccable gums even!

Marianna shies away from the exceedingly large half-orc, but alarm is quickly overtaken by puzzlement, "Half... lady? Yes, I know Janira. As Luurg wraps Begrilda in his long-armed embrace, she smiles warmly. Her smile is quickly replaced by a look of shock and disgust, however, as she catches the half-orc's aroma. "Ugh! Luurg, what have I told you about bathing before you come to a mission briefing? Did you just come back from the swamp again? My my, what a chore it is to look after you!"

As Bishop gives his plan for winning Hemzel over, Begrilda makes a loud, outlandish choking sound that you soon realize was meant to be laughter, then slaps the rogue on the back, maybe a little too hard. "Oh Bishop, when did you become such a joker?"

She then peeks past her two friends and spots Mariana, whom she had honestly overlooked until this point. She lightly moves between the two larger figures and steps up to the gnome, gently taking her hands in her own and squeezing them gently. "Hello there, dear. I'm so very sorry that I haven't introduced myself. I just looked right over your head, I suppose! Anyhow, I'm Begrilda Hammerhild, a priestess of Bolka. What might I call you, please?" The dwarfess tries to bat her eyes genially at Mariana, though the effect doesn't come out quite right, as one of her false eyelashes has come unstuck and is hanging down in front of her eye.

A tall man with a crisp military uniform leans lazily on the wall at the back of the room, a hefty shield covered in runes slung over his shoulder. After the warm welcome from Luurg, he contented himself with watching the old friends reunite. When Begrilda mentions a peace offering he zones out for a while, thinking very hard before suddenly (several minutes later) exclaiming "Most excellent idea little dudette! I made a most excellent shield for a blacksmithery compo recently, it has a totally bodacious shine and everything. Besides, I've decided to end things with Gallix. I just...oh! What am I doing? This isn't the place for this." She wipes at her eye, trying to clear away some of the moisture that had begun to gather there, but looks shocked as she notices her false eyelash clinging to the back of her hand.

After putting the eyelash back in place, she shakes Eadric's hand when he offers it. "Oh hello there! That is a rather fine shield you have there. I've got one here, though it's not nearly so nice. Do you really think the druids would take a shield as a sign of the Society's good will?"

Late to the party again! All in the 8 hours I was sleeping.

The door opens in a quick swing, standing there a scrawny somewhat tall half elf puffing as if out of breathe. He dresses simple but somewhat looks smart with a few measuring tools sticking from his belt. "I told you not to take the hilly road! Totally inefficient!" He says annoyed, seemingly to nobody.

Looking around the room, he squints his eyes. "Do I know you lot?... Maybe in another life... the name's Damie...I mean Kitt." Why would you that Kitt? Idiot. He waves his hand to group as shuffles around finding a seat, leaving the door open as well. "Err. So. Did I miss anything?"

Moments later, nonchalantly strolling in to the room, a stony creature on fours; too large to be a dog but not large enough to be a regular elemental. Although characteristically, looks like a stone dog of sorts, but without a tail. It sheepishly makes it's way to Kitt's side and falls by his feet.

By this time, Kitt's got a notebook ready to fill it details of what he's missed.

Sorry for the silence. Was out of office pretty much the whole day so didn't get to update. Let's get started!

As each of the party enters the room, Hamshank glares at any attempts to shake his hand, pat his back or even just to come within a few feet of him. Especially at Luurg and Eadric.

"If I knew what would get Hemzel and his band of forests gnomes to call of his blood feud against the Pathfinders, I would have done it a long time ago, wouldn't I?" Hamshanks comments, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Honestly, what gifts or favours dirt-eating druids would want is beyond me. You would have to go find out from the horse's mouth. Perhaps literally! You know, how druids can turn in animals..." Here, he starts chortling at his own (lame) joke.

Once he has recovered himself, he pulls out a rather dingy map from a pouch, and hands it gingerly to Luurg, taking care not to make skin contact. (see maps and handouts) "You will take the ship up the river and dock at Bellis. From there, it should be a pleasant trek through the forest to Hemzel's cottage." At this point, he gestures to the red cross crudely sketched onto the map.

"Now if you are done with your nauseatingly girlish drama and playing with your ... fruits, it is time to be on your way. The ship is leaving in less than an hour's time, and that's all the time you have to grab any last minute supplies. Just get back here with that lore stone!" With that, without a farewell, Hamshanks turns and leaves the room rather abruptly.

Go ahead and make whatever purchases you need. I'll move things along in the next post.

Sovereign Court

Year of Boundless Wonder

The ship journey to Bellis was mostly uneventful. From the town of Bellis, the party then strikes forth into the Verduran Forest. Hamshanks' promise of a pleasant walk in the woods lasted the whole of an hour or two. After that, the journey progressively went downhill (and uphill, down cliffs, etc). It seems that he had forgotten about the brambles, boulders, and biting insects of the Verduran Forest, which turned the jouney into an arduous three-day scramble of detours, torn clothes, itchy insect bites and near falls.

As the sun sets on the third day of travel in the Verduran Forest, the welcome sight of a puffing chimney — Hemzel’s home, according to the map — reveals itself atop a hill that is sited on a relatively clearer patch of the forest. A dirt trail leads directly to the hut, but it is clear he does not welcome visitors — his home is surrounded by a thick barricade of vines that are practically impassable. The trail, however, goes through the vines and there is no gate across this natural fencing.

Smoke rises lazily from a chimney set atop the small, round wooden hut.

It is now dim lighting as the sun is setting. See maps and handouts.

Edit: Oh that was quick... Lemme add on some then!

Luurg seems to really enjoy the boat trip. He spends time exploring the ship, especially below deck in the hold looking around and enjoying the trip. Above deck he spends the bulk of his time fishing. He has some spools of hand line and hooks and lures he drags from the stern of the ship. Luurg doesn't seem to mind too much, doing an admirable job avoiding the bulk of the thorns and nettles and trying to direct traffic around them whenever possible. No purchases for me!

Begrilda attempts a curtsy as Hamshanks storms past her out of the room. "Good day, Venture Captain," she says, though she stutter out the final word as her foot gets caught in her skirt halfway through her curtsy and she begins to stumble.

Over the next several days of travel, the party becomes very familiar with Begrilda's morning routine of washing her hands and face, cleaning the simple white woolen dress she wears beneath her armor, shining the glistening breastplate - especially the image of her goddess's sacred falcon depicted on the armor - and finally spending some time in prayer. Throughout the day, she busies herself helping around the ship with the cooking and cleaning, though she occasionally takes a moment aside to chat with one of the crew, especially the women, asking about their love lives, whether they have husbands, and so on. All in all, she seems quite content on their journey to Bellis.

Once they disembark, however, Begrilda is anything but content. The hem of her dress is covered in mud and grass stains within hours of entering the forest, her morning routine of shining her armor becomes essentially impossible as pollen continually falls on the spots she has just finished cleaning, and struggles to concentrate fully on her prayers with insects constantly buzzing around her ears. By the time the Pathfinders reach Hemzel's hut, she is nearly ready to swear a blood feud of her own against the druid and his foul, bug-infested forest.

Eadric stands at the bottom of the hill, breathing heavily and sweating profusely. He seems to have spent the journey through the forest running into every thorn and tripping over every root and now brandishes a rather spectacular black eye from walking into a branch while talking to one of the smaller pathfinders. He kept his spirits up by doing something that he liked to call sliding; every time they came upon a steeper hill, he'd run up to the edge, throw his shield on the ground, and jump onto it shouting "Kowabunga!" riding it all the way to the bottom.

"Woah! You're not wrong little sis... Those things look gnarly. Do you think we should chop our way through-" He slaps his forehead with his palm, making a resounding thwack "Bummer, I totally forgot to pack my hatchet!" Begrilda stands at the bottom of the hill bearing Hemzel's shack, her mood clearly not at its best. As she gazes up the hill, her eyes follow the path, which seems to dead-end in the bramble. "This little fellow is supposed to be some sort of druid right? Well maybe those are his doing," she says, pointing up the path toward the brambles. She approaches the barrier and says a quick prayer for Bolka to open her eyes to magical effects.

He rubs his belly as he looks at the club and smiles, and sticks it in the already overstuffed backpack.

"Maybe it best if we holler to talk wid 'im? He's no gonna like us choppin' up his bushes. If dat don't work we can see if any trees hang over we can climb up or someting?" Luurg hollers to the house "Hemzel you home? HELLO? Can you come out and talk to us?"

As he's doing that he walks the perimeter and looks for overhanging trees and sees how tall the brambles are walling in the place.

At the mention of the word dog, the eidolon, without moving, groans "I'm not a dog." surprising many at the sight of a talking dog.

Kitt replies to the group "Pleases to meet you, don't mind if I grab this." He says taking a banana. "This ere lazy bum? Her names Terra! She might not look it, but she's a real reliable dog."

Still unmoving, the eidolon snaps again, a little more annoyed. "Not a dog!"

At sea, Kitt spends most of his time bugging the captain and the crew mates, letting them know they ruin the ship inefficiently, asking then to shift sails and angle the boat differently showing mountains of calculation to prove why he's right. The eidolon sleeps on deck all day everyday, but at night returns to her home plane, each time she returns, certain characteristics change, maybe a floppy ear, slightly longer limbs, or shorter stout, but the general look remains the same.

Stepping off the boat, Kitt and his eidolon walks near the rear of the group.

Sorry my description wasn’t clear. As per the map, the vine fence has a break where the trail goes through. So you can walk right up to the hut.

Luurg hollers towards the hut but there’s no response. He then starts moving round the fence anticlockwise.

Luurg:
However, you can hear some rustling from within the hut.

Begrilda calls upon her connection to divinity to sense the presence of magic. Almost immediately, she gets strong emanations of magic from the direction of the hut, and strangely from outside as well.

Just as she is about to share with her party, a high-pitched voice cackles out from behind the hut. “Too late, too late for Hemzel! Gire, finish them!” Almost immediately after, a log in front of the hut suddenly explodes with a loud shattering sound burst, startling a swarm of spiders that pour out right in front of Eadric. At the same time, a small, silver-haired humanoid who moves with quick jerky motions fades into view at the back of the hut.

Sense Motive DC20:
From his body language he seems to be addressing someone beside him, although you can’t see who that might be.

Sorry for the late update. Long day at work yesterday.

Bishop prepares his torch. The spiders do not wait, however, and swarm all over those in front: Eadric, Kitt and Bishop, biting and sinking in their tiny fangs into their skin.

Eadric dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Kitt dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Also, 2 fort saves each. See below.

Kitt, can you place a token for Terra on the map beside you?

Just then, a miniscule, green-skinned female humanoid with a pair of fluttering dragonfly wings appear beside the silver-haired humanoid. Presumably the ally named Gire, she calls out to the party, "You... you... you better flee while you still can! Or a disaster beyond .... beyond your imagination will befall ... befall you!!! We... we will rend you apart!" With a gesture towards the party, suddenly all the grass, vines and branches grow and reach out chaotically, grabbing at whatever is within its reach. That done, she beats her dragon fly wing and rises 30 feet into the air.

All make reflex save DC13 or entangled by the entangle SLA.

Sense Motive DC15:
You sense that behind Gire's bravado, she is actually uncomfortable, horrified even by her own words and actions.

The small silver-haired humanoid, having given his command, moves with lightning speed clambering over the hedges to the north and disappears into the forest.

entangle spell:
This spell causes tall grass, weeds, and other plants to wrap around creatures in the area of effect or those that enter the area. Creatures that fail their save gain the entangled condition. Creatures that make their save can move as normal, but those that remain in the area must save again at the end of your turn. Creatures that move into the area must save immediately. Those that fail must end their movement and gain the entangled condition. Entangled creatures can attempt to break free as a move action, making a Strength or Escape Artist check. The DC for this check is equal to the DC of the spell. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the effect lasts.

entangled condition:
The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell.

Kitt, you're missing the 2nd fort save for the swarm distraction.

Take note that the entangle area is difficult terrain. (Kitt, have readjusted your position.) Also, you need to make another reflex save at the end of your turn if you are still within the entangle effect, i.e. Kitt and Terra.

Eadric kicks and stomps at the spiders around him rather ineffectually. Being so tiny and which such large numbers, his counter attack does very little to affect the swarm. He opts instead to hightail away from the spiders, pushing his way through the grasping vines while drawing a javelin along the way. Despite the distance and the tiny size of the flying humanoid, Eadric manages to throw it with great accuracy, striking Gire. However, the javelin simply glances off, and she is completely unharmed by the weapon.

Luurg recalls encountering swarms and extrapolating from what he knows of spiders, knows that weapons are ineffectual against them and they carry a poison that can weaken. (Actually, you all have pretty much found out everything about the spiders from their actions this round.) On Gire, he recognises her as an atomie, a type of fey creature. Like most fey creatures, they have natural resistances againts weapons not made from cold iron. In addition, atomies have natural resistances against magic. (Will resolve your actions after Bishop's.)

Mariana, deftly dodging the grasping vines, moves away from the swarm to give space for Luurg.

Entangle is a nasty spell when used in conjunction with persistent AoE...

Begrilda manages to dodge out of the way of grasping vines, and moves towards the half-orc, laying a blessing on him.

Kitt, although managing to resist the effects of the spiders' venom, still become nauseated by the thousands of creepy crawlies all over him. Kitt, you only have one move action, i.e. either move away or draw the wand. I'll take the former.

Bishop similarly resists the venom but similarly is overwhelmed by the swarm, unable to concentrate sufficiently to do much. What's worse, as he tries to move out of the swarm, the entangling plants hold him fast.
Bishop, you failed the reflex save so you can't move. I'll move your token back. You can take a move action to replace, however.

Luurg, your readied action never went off as Bishop never moved out of the way. Considering the attack roll, that might have been for the best. :)

spider reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
The entangling plants create such an obstacles that the spiders themselves are unable to keep coherent sufficiently to move. Thus, they continue swarming over poor Bishop.

Gire, the atomie calls out in a high-pitched voice. "Your attacks are ... are futile! You can't hurt me! Flee... Get away ... while you still can!" Gire is on the verge of tears, seemingly from horror and terror. From the way she glances back uncertainly at the path of the silver-haired humanoid, you believe you might be able to turn her against her leader. (Any diplo attempts would take a standard action.)

If you failed the earlier sense motive, you can try again, but please read the first post's spoiler, not this one.

I made a mistake. For remaining in the entangle area, the save is to be made at the end of Gire's turn, which mechanically on pbp should be at the start of your turn. Whatever rolls you had at the end of the turn for the entangle I'll only apply it for the next turn. Exceptions are Bishop who failed the save at the start, and Begrilda who hasn't made the save.
