Map updated.
The party enters the crypt. The fog seems to follow them.
I still need an answer: What light source(s)?
Dolgarth can see the tracks as laid out on the map.
The vapor of the fog seeps through the now-open doorway to this crypt. It seems to stop at the edges of the light, as though the light is keeping it at bay. The tendrils of fog at the edge of the light writhe and dance.
The party can hear something--a skittering? Because of the echoes in the empty space down here, it is impossible to determine the source of the noise.
Blackheath |
I had cast Light on the tankard hanging at my hip before entering.
Blackheath tightens his two-handed grip on his long sword and follows Dolgarth whenever the ranger is ready to head deeper into the crypt.

I just saw the avatar for Kiki the Lion and you almost lost a player to "death by laughter." That is too funny.

Dolgarth |
Awww kitty kitty kitty
"Speakin' o' feet..." Dolgarth points out the tracks. "We may's well follow this here trail. Reckon it'll lead somewheres nice?"
Dolgarth begins to walk alongside the tracks, urging the others to follow (unless there are any objections).
GM Engleaktig |
I just saw the avatar for Kiki the Lion and you almost lost a player to "death by laughter." That is too funny.
Glad you enjoyed my choice. :-)
____________________________________________________________Dolgarth moves up to the door. As the party moves away from the entrance to the crypt, th fog "takes a step" down the stairs and inside. The skittering / clicking / scraping noises increase.
I moved everyone on the map.
Blackheath |
Blackheath will step to the left side of the door and give his friends time to prepare themselves. When Dolgarth gives him the sign, he will open the door.
I don't know if people would like to (or are able to) ready an attack in case anything comes in when I open the door.
@GM, I am trying to open the door without blocking Dolgarth and the party. I would open it on the party's signal.
Dolgarth |
"Alright, le's do it," Dolgarth says, giving the signal to open the door and drawing his weapon.
Blackheath |
Blackheath opens the door.
Vandel Kur'resh |
As Blackheath starts to go for the door Vandal quickly moves in front of him and puts his hand up in to stop the half-elf. Then whispers, "Let me check it before you open it."

Oh I'm an awesome roller! lol
Blackheath |
When no horrible creature jumps out at them, Blackheath steps back into place behind Dolgarth.
"Only way to go is down. Story of my life, really."
Blackheath |
Looks good to me. Blackheath will follow the group down as soon as everyone else is ready.
GM Engleaktig |
With every step that the party takes, the skittering grows more insistent, and the tendrils of fog seem to test the edges of light!
Their steps echo unnaturally.
The air down here seems several degrees cooler. Your breath becomes visible as you exhale.
Time seems to slow down.
Step.
Skitter, skitter, skitter.
Exhale.
Step.
Skitter, skitter, skitter.
Inhale.
Step.
Skitter, skitter, skitter.
It's getting colder.

Gravleon is creeped out by the ambiance of the crypt. In defiance he channels positive energy. As he calls upon the power of his deity, the fog seems to surge forward hungrily, and the skittering noises grow louder.
Vandel notices that the skittering noise seems to emanate from the walls themselves. All the walls. All around the party.
There are numerous cracks ion the walls.
Now that the front door is open and moisture and cold air permeates the crypt, water has begun to condense on the walls. With all the cracks everywhere, it looks like the walls are "bleeding."
GM Engleaktig |
The party surrounds the sarcophagus. The skittering reaches an impossible crescendo. Then, two things (Knowledge Nature) drop from the ceiling.
1d6 ⇒ 31d6 ⇒ 2
They land next to Blackheath and Sangre.

The clown realizes he is being attacked by small elephants -- and nobody is likely to convince him otherwise with a roll like that.
Blackheath runs his index and middle fingers along his blade, imbuing it with arcane power (swift action -- arcane strike) before slashing at the beast using a two-hand grip on his longsword.

The DC to ID them is only 5. He might be convinced that these multi-legged creatures with large, compound eyes, and hard shell-like carapaces aren't elephants. Maybe. ;-P
Wow, 5 and I still missed it! Clearly these are elephants in their larval state.
Vandel Kur'resh |
Vandel moves around the edge of the group and strikes at the creature with his spear.

The party carefully checks the sarcophagus. Seeing no obvious, immediate peril, you open the lid!!!
Insert appropriately suspenseful music score here. ;-P
Inside, you find loot. :-D
four sun rods
six flasks of holy water
ten +1 arrows
five +1 ghost touch arrows
two +1 undead bane arrows
five potions of cure light wounds
two potions of lesser restoration
one scroll of detect undead
two scrolls of hide from undead
one scroll of protection from evil
one thin darkwood case decorated with an image of a scarab with a single eye glaring from its back
one spirit board
one brass spirit planchette
four iron and glass vials containing tiny, churning clouds of vapor
I'm hand-waving the spellcraft check to identify most of this stuff. However, the four four iron and glass vials will need checks.
I've added a "Loot" tab to the Google Sheet for this campaign.
Blackheath |
"These must be some of the tools Petros spoke of in his journal. Let's get these wrapped up and back to the Lorrimor estate before locals get the wrong ideas. Then we can get ready for a trip to the prison."
If the others agree, Blackheath will pack up the loot and take it back, closing the crypt on the way out.
Blackheath |
Is that a Spellcraft check? If so, I don't have it. I will try Arcana, though, just in case.

D'oh! :-(
Yes, spellcraft. But, depending on the situation, I might allow other checks (from time to time) if you can apply them creatively. :-)

As you examine the vials, you hear a scream from outside. It sounds far away.

"I think that's our cue!" Blackheath finishes dumping all the loot into bags before rushing off into the direction of the scream. He hopes the others follow him.

LOL, Gravleon! :-)
____________________________________________________________
As the party arrives at the monument, they see a young couple--a man and a woman in their mid-to-late teens. The young lady is crying.
There's blood splattered all over the monument. There is, perhaps, not as much blood as the local described to Grimburrow. But, there's still quite a lot. Here and there are tiny bits of gore--a small piece of muscle, a bit of brain, etc. The blood has been used to write a "V" at the statue's base.
When they notice you're arrival, the young woman screams again. Looking at the party she shrieks: "Eeek! What did ye do? What have you brought upon our town?"
A crowd of locals is approaching hurriedly in the distance. It seems her screams have drawn them.
Blackheath |
Blackheath waits until the crowd is within earshot and then, in a loud and carrying voice, shouts the following speech:
This bright young woman has asked what we've brought to your town! And, good people, I will tell you that the only thing we bring to Ravengro is its SALVATION!
The time for secrecy is over! As you know, we have come for the funeral of Professor Lorrimor, but what you do not know is that we suspect he was murdered! Yes! An early victim of the beast that still haunts this town. No doubt, Lorrimor was on its trail -- having himself protected Ravengro and other parts of the country from the forces of evil for years -- but, alas, age is an enemy to us all, and it seems the hunter became the hunted, thus leaving Ravengro without her most stalwart defender!
And that is why WE shall take up the heroic Lorrimor's mantle. We shall avenge his death, and beat back the shadows that threaten to overtake this town! Already, with the permission of Father Grimburrow, we have inspected a strange crypt -- aye, strange indeed that it was EMPTY! Completely lacking in the corpse department!
Doesn't it make sense, though? When the beast is vandalizing a memorial to the brave heroes of Ravengro, its supposed resting place would be emptier than a hermit's cell during happy hour!
This sword in my hand, I pledge to the defense of Ravengro! We are hot on the trail of the vile creature! Let us prove our intentions -- let us show that we are friends of the townspeople here!
And, in light of the heroic sacrifices of these brave guards here memorialized, and in respect to the wishes of Petros Lorrimor, I, Blackheath the Monster Slayer -- you may have heard of me -- shall forgo my usual fee, and I will bag your monster FOR FREE!
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
He backs his words with a dazzling smile.
Anyone have an aid another to knock that up to 30? I feel that we may need it. The townsfolk seem pretty wound up.
GM Engleaktig |
The crowd isn't really sure WHAT Blackheath says. However, he says it with such smooth aplomb that they all pause.
"Did he say free?" one asks.
"Salvation! Uh... Wait. What did he save us from?" another questions.
"He slayed a monster!" exclaims a third.
"Do we have monsters in Ravengro?" wonders yet another.
"Well, we sure don't now!" responds someone else.
They're all unsure what just happened. Yet they're all smiling. And they all look to Blackheath to see what's going to happen next.
____________________________________________________________
Then, one of them notices all the blood on the memorial... and screams.
They're not hostile to the party. But somebody did something awful to the monument. That's going to upset all the townsfolk--regardless of anything else.
