I sure hope they can get what we need and fast...the longer they stay on board that damned ship the more can go wrong. , she thinks to herself as the two go on board.

Trouble in Tamran | Sky Key Solution | Between the Lines

As Helane steps away, she hears a new argument starting between the inspector and the mate. "This isn't the first accusation of you smuggling, you know. I have half a mind to have this place searched from top to bottom ..."

Helane knows from the letter that the documents should be in the captain's cabin, so she and Beaumont head off in search of it.
Any Profession(sailor)—or some other skill you think would work—to know where that is?

Sorry for a bit of a delay. Bad cold.

Profession(merchant) will do ... a take 10 plus your bonus is sufficient to know where to look (fore not aft), and which level (mid, rather than upper or lower).

What is everyone else doing? At this point, with three on board, the scenario says any further attempts to board are successful, so as long as you can give me a good reason to be there (subterfuge, swimming, whatever), you can join the party.

Zandirri's skill with the lock is evident. (I'll take the roll, so I know how long it took ....)

The lock clicks satisfyingly and the door slips open.

The captain's cabin is unremarkable, although better furnished than the rest of the ship. Light comes in through small portholes, and illuminates a made bed and a mostly clean desk.

A brief bit of searching turns up the ledgers you were seeking in the top drawer of the desk.

What now?

Well, one of the great things about this scenario, Beaumont, is that most of the encounters permit a wide variety of solutions, so there should be some good replayability with this one.

You make your way to the tavern mentioned in your letter. You have about an hour before the meeting, which is enough time to prepare just about anything.

Map is up, by the way.

The Overflowing Oyster is a dirty, broken-looking building that barely fits between the fishing tackle shop to its north and the junk shop to its south. Hanging over the door is a creaky sign that shows a painted oyster with pearls spilling from its gaping shell.

The interior of the Overflowing Oyster displays a mix of rickety furniture and gaudy decorations, from strands of obviously fake pearls hanging over the kitchen’s entrance to wooden carvings of sultry mermaids and cheap paintings of ships at sea.

Knowledge(local) untrained okay OR Diplomacy(Gather Information) DC 12:
Contrary to its name, the dirty tavern is hardly crowded, even during its “busy” hours: at meal times, several local laborers hunch over cheap food and casual games of chance, cursing and muttering to the same old friends about the same old troubles.

Elneth follows her companions into the building's hall, carefully listening to Helane Tes "In that case it might be difficult to make sure for our enemies not to see each other... There are some clues here that might be playing on our behalf and we should discuss"

"They might not know each other. Which means we perhaps can impersonate them, move them to a private room and simulate an alternative meeting for each of them. This option have the risk they might know each other and discover our disguise and the advantage they would think the meeting has taken place and everything can go on normally." Elneth says.

She continues then "The other option is to make sure one of them does not arrive to the meeting. We can take him and hit him until we make sure he will not attend, but that will certainly arise suspiciousness. A better variant might be to make sure one of them does not arrive on time, then slip a message to the one attending saying the other had a problem and will not arrive to the meeting."

"And finally, we have the advantage the delivery is imminent, we only need to divert the meeting for a time, just for this night, and we will be ok. One easy way to achieve it might be making sure the meeting point is not available to them anymore, they will not know where to go then for the meeting. Taking the tavern by fire might be effective but too much. Perhaps impersonating a health inspector and closing the tavern preventively for the night?" the half-elf woman looks at her companions a bit overwhelmed by the possibilities.

"Any other ideas?"

Sorry. I realized that I'm letting player knowledge leak through (I've run this a couple of times). I think that at this point we probably need more complete player buy in on the plan and then for the GM to start telling us stuff before we can proceed. That is my reading of the scenario, anyway.

Trouble in Tamran | Sky Key Solution | Between the Lines

You have the *outline* of a plan, meaning you have focused your objective, but only Helane has declared an action.

So, when possible, state an action I can follow up on. I will try in my posts to leave you a situation you can respond to.

The group decides to find ways to shut the establishment down. They've discussed alerting authorities to the fake pearls, and the health department to vermin (to be introduced). As a backup, Helane suggested someone try to identify the Kortos agent and delay him.

So, if you wish to find vermin, I'll take Survival or Knowledge(nature) if you wish to capture them yourself. Other skill rolls are possible, if you chose a different approach. (Just describe it and roll.) Convincing authorities to come help would require Diplomacy (or Bluff, Intimidate).

Should you wish to go after the fake pearls, you can confront Paltus directly (Intimidate, etc.), search his establishment for evidence (Perception), gather information about his trade (Diplomacy or Knowledge(local)), etc., etc. Then, you'll have to convince the guards that it's worth checking out.

Does that help?

Helane goes over to Pal, and gives him instructions about telling the Kortos agent the meeting is postponed. Pal nods actively. Helane is such a good friend.

"OK, I'll go and try and collect some rats then"

Zandirri goes and buys some overripe fruit and cheese and then sets up a few fairly crude rat traps.

If I'm allowed to take 10 I will for a 16. Otherwise

survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

I think it helps thanks!

Elneth nods to Helane and Zandirri and adds "I will then look for the authorities to try convince them for an urgent inspection"

As so the half-elf leaves the spot and looks for the city council authorities "Sorry to introduce a topic like this in such a blunt way. I do not usually like to bother with this things, but a citizen has a responsibility upon its community, isn't it? I just come from the Overflowing Oyster, the place is so dirty, full of all types of critters I do not want to even remember about it. Please, go inspect that place urgently, I fear if not dealt this very seem night that place may extend the very same filth plague through all Korthos..." Elneth says while trying to show herself very concerned about the topic.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

If the attempt does not seem to work, Elneth will not get rude, just show disappointed and go back to the tavern looking to help with another of the plans.
