Cyrus Darkwater |

"We'll she ain't pretty but she's sea worthy." Cyrus says once the raft is complete.
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Cyrus grunts at his own failed attempt to catch a meal. "We'll get it next time." He says with a cough.

Galenus |

Earlier
As they embark on the raft, Galenus orders the little Quipper to keep an eye out for underwater dangers and relate back to him anything he'll need to be concerned about.
Likewise, Galenus will occasionally take a look through its eyes to see what's down there.
Now
Well. Look at these. Hey Shuushar, any idea what they are?
Does Galenus know anything about these? Can we make a check of some sort?
I wonder if we can turn them into some sort of focus? he ponders aloud.

Galinndan Siannodel |

Galinndan stares at the crystals. He still feels the weariness creeping in his bones.
Arcana to identify: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

Shuushar the Awakened--NPC |

Your quipper sees rocks, crags, strange passages, and occasionally a dark shape move casually on the edge of his vision.
Shuushar nods and responds. "The minerals are attractive but I don't believe they are more than the natural beauty this land can hold. The glow is called faerzness. It suffuses areas and none know why."
You're pretty sure the minerals are non-magical.

Galinndan Siannodel |

"I do not believe that these crystals contain magic, as beautiful as they are."

Galenus |

A focus need not contain magic in and of itself, Galenus explains, It just needs to be a unique item of value that one can use to.. um.. focus their energies.

Buppido--NPC |

What are you asking/attempting?
Buppido dances about madly on the deck of the raft, dancing and swaying while yelling like a crazy derro. "I have brought us to the cavern of beautiful shininess!!!"
You fear his antics could upset the raft or draw unwanted attention.
Some form of social check would be wise here.

Galinndan Siannodel |

Galinndan attempts to placate the frolicking Derro.
"Buppido, you may alert foes jealous of your greatness with your voice. Please calm down."
Persuasion: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18

Kanzen Millithor |

Kanzen looks at Derendil, a look of concern and surprise on his face at Buppido's strange reaction. Then he shakes his head. Thank Eilistraee I have a completely sane friend like you! he thinks at the huge quaggoth that believes he is an elf.
I'm mostly convinced Derendil is a polymorphed elf, but it would be hilarious if he were just a strangely intelligent, yet delusional, quaggoth.

Buppido--NPC |

Good choice of words to match the good roll, Galinndan.
Buppido calms down and whispers "You're right! And those pesky worshipers and coveters can be such an annoyance."
He goes to the middle of the boat and clasps his hands in glee while sitting cross-legged and smiling at everyone around him.
25 xp for Galinndan!

Derendil--NPC |

Derendil nods his huge shaggy head. "Indeed. Though I do not worship your goddess, she is one of the few of this dark land who's name I can hear in peace. For my part, I thank Corellon that I am not completely surrounded by maniacs. That other Drow prisoner, Sarith, seemed to have some homicidal psychosis..."

caster4life |

????: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Terrain: 1d10 ⇒ 10
Creatures: 1d12 ⇒ 3
Guarding: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Galenus |

Going for an arcane focus, but I'm aware how unlikely it is. ;)
Galenus takes a hard look at the crystals, and tries to determine what kind of value they may hold, for which they may be able to sell in the next port of civilization.
If he feels they're valuable, then: I think we should investigate further. We might be able to use these to buy better equipment when we meet a merchant.
If he feels they're not valuable, then: I think we need to be moving on. Never know what traps these things can lure.
I'm not sure what to roll, there.

caster4life |

Ah I see. No they're normal mineral crystals. Investigation check to see if any of them might be worth something. But agreed, let's move on. Just roll the check and I'll tell you the results.
You travel along for several hours and in the quiet, dripping landscape until you hear quiet, sucking noise. You look around in alarm and notice a whirlpool to your left!
Everyone can try to help paddle the boat. Boating (strength) check so those proficient with water vehicles can add their proficiency bonus. We only need one success right now.
Complicating matter, there are several stalactites and other islands sticking up out of the water. One of the larger ones seems to hold some sort of altar that is giving off light from a blue flame that burns continually atop it.

Kanzen Millithor |

Of course there's some weird altar burning on an island just near where we're trying to avoid a whirlpool! The ol' crazybrutal Underdark :)
Seeing the whirlpool, Kanzen wordlessly points it out to Derendil, then does his best to start paddling hard to help the raft avoid it.
Str check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

Galinndan Siannodel |

Galinndan replies to Buppido with a slight smile:
"Indeed."
He then assists with the paddling, or at least tries to:
Strength: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6
Strength, dis: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5

Galenus |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Investigation: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Oh shit! Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit... Galenus screams in his own head as he desperately paddles. A last thought occurs - My Quipper! He recalls the little fish back to him and places him in a pocket dimension, ready to be tossed back into the waters when it's safe again.
Strength check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

caster4life |

Before:
With the help of Eddrikk and his tools, Galenus manages to pry out a particularly symmetrical crystal that looks to be worth about 25 gp.
Now:
Kanzen puts his back into it and manages to move the boat.
With one person rowing, the raft has a speed of 5 ft per round. Two rowers can get it up to 10 ft per round, 4 can achieve 15 fpr, etc.

caster4life |

You move the boat forward a ways, nearing the strange small altar when suddenly a dark wave leaps out of the water and strikes at Irdril.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Dam: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 6, 4) + 3 = 18
Inits: 10d20 ⇒ (7, 11, 11, 6, 3, 17, 18, 17, 12, 11) = 113
Tiebreaker: 3d20 ⇒ (13, 10, 8) = 31
Sorry, Irdril. You were randomly selected by a real life roll.
You can barely see a dark, watery shape wrapped around you, trying to drag you down. Everything starts going black...
Irdril is struck hard (14 damage) and dragged into the water by a strange, watery figure that is very difficult to distinguish from the rest of the Darklake. Kanzen, Cyrus, and Galinndan leap into action.
Irdril, Cyrus, Galinndan, and Kanzen, GOOOO!! Someone needs to succeed at rowing to keep the raft from getting dragged into the whirlpool.
You think that a metal weapon passed briefly through the flame on the altar would gain a temporary enchantment (+1 for 1 minute).
A weapon held in contact with the flame at one end and water at the other for 1 minute would extinguish the flame and become a +1 magic weapon.
No check to ID whatever happened to Irdril yet. You haven't seen enough of it.

Galenus |

Arcana: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
What the hell is that?! Galenus exclaims over the noise of the rushing water and the sudden strange splash overcoming Idril.
Looking at their surroundings, he spots the strange alter with it's strange blue flame.
Tiberous! Pass your sword through that flame! I've seen something like it before, it'll sharpen your blade for a bit, and give us that edge we need to fight this thing!
I make no apologies for the pun.

caster4life |

Note that you are a bit of a ways from the altar and this raft, which wasn't built for speed, is fighting a whirlpool. Irdril, you can cast a spell with verbal components underwater but I'm ruling that every time you do so, you lose 1 rounds worth of air. You can normally hold your breath for a number of rounds equal to your con score.

Galinndan Siannodel |

Arcana: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Galinndan desperately focuses on rowing.
Str: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Str, dis: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20

caster4life |

Monster auto-grapple tends to work a little differently. You count as restrained and have a move speed of 0. You can attempt to escape with an acrobatics or athletics check as an action.
I say it's different because people have to use an action to grapple you but certain monsters automatically grapple on a hit. In addition, grappled doesn't normally mean restrained but it does for monster auto-grapple.

Cyrus Darkwater |

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Off Hand: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 6) + 3 = 11
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Cyrus dives into the water after Irdil and attacks the strange creature.

caster4life |

Cyrus slashes into the strange, living water. His attacks seem only somewhat effective.

caster4life |

Wis: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Bummer.
The water shimmers slightly but shakes off Irdril's spell. It's attention seems to have turned to Cyrus.
Inspiration to Cyrus for leaping in awesomely to the rescue. Galinndan, FYI you can move the boat 5 ft in a direction of your choice. If you do it on the map, try to move everyone else on the raft along as well.

Kanzen Millithor |

Seeing Galinndan take over the rowing Kanzen follows Cyrus over the side, daggers flashing.
Dagger: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Dagger: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Dmg: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Dmg: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Galinndan Siannodel |

Galinndan manages to drive the raft further away from the whirlpool.
5ft north, have moved characters too.

caster4life |

Haha. Galinndan, are you going to cause trouble for me and move everyone off the map? XD Irdril, you are currently grappled so you can't swim away (which would be an athletics check unless you have a swim speed). But that won't Speaking of which, Kanzen needs to make an athletics check to swim and not get sucked towards the whirlpool.
Kanzen leaps into the water heroically to help save Irdril and slashes at the strange water with his twin blades. He only damages it somewhat, however.
This is a water weird. You may look up its stats. Your character knows them.
The creature turns in watery wrath and attacks the one who hit it most recently, releasing Irdril from its watery grasp (Irdril, you can try to swim now). You can also try to scramble up onto the nearest stalagmite with a much easier athletics check.
Attack K: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Dam: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 5, 4) + 3 = 17
Waves rise up around Kanzen and smash into him (17 dam), grasping him tightly (grappled, restrained, and underwater now: can attempt to escape as an action).
All party up! GO GO GO!

Galinndan Siannodel |

Nah, I doubt I'll get that good a roll again. ;)
Arcana: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Galinndan shouts as he rows desperately.
"That is a water weird! You need magic weapons or magic which is not fire to properly injure it!"
Strength: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11
Strength, dis: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4

caster4life |

Technically, you have disadvantage on the arcana check too but don't worry about it.

Galenus |

Arcana: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
A water weird? What's so weird about water?
Will look up stats later...
strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Galenus rows as hard as he can, trying to keep the raft near his companions while also keeping away from the whirlpool.
Can we keep the raft in place, just away from the funnel?

caster4life |

Yes you can row to keep the raft in place.
Irdril scrambles up the nearest stalagmite, barely keeping a purchase on the wet stone.

Cyrus Darkwater |

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Offhand: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Cyrus continues to futily cut the strange creature.
Formal declaration of breath holding just in case.

Galenus |

We need magic to defeat this thing! Help me row towards that alter! Galenus exclaims over the road of the water.
Tiberius! Let me cast a spell on you! You can nearly leap there from here!
I'd like to cast Jump on Tiberius so he can reach the alter.

Galenus |

Next round is fine for the spell.

Kanzen Millithor |

Kanzen curses his own foolishness as he struggles against the strange watery creature, desperately staving off panic and doing his best to hold his breath.
Acrobatics to escape: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
If successful...
Athletics to not get sucked into the whirlpool: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

caster4life |

Kanzen manages to struggle free of it's watery grasp and keep his own head above water.

caster4life |

Hmmm... Eddrikk it seems you and Galenus might have different ideas about how to row in this scenario. You guys will want to resolve that.
Tiberius moves closer to Galenus and prepares to have jump cast on him. In the meantime, he draws his longbow and takes a potshot at the strange beast.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Dam: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Dam: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 4, 1) + 3 = 11
WW: -19 hp
The watery monster seems to shiver in frustration at all of the small blows that it is receiving. It turns on Cyrus and surging waters pound into the small goblin swimmer (11 damage and grappled/restrained).
All party, GO!!!

Galinndan Siannodel |

Seeing Cyrus's desperate state, Galinndan decides to join in a more direct fashion against the water weird. He draws his longbow and launches an arrow.
Longbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage, Piercing: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

caster4life |

Clinging to the wet rock the young woman calls forth force out of the void that blasts into the living water, penetrating waves throughout it. A long lithe tail shows from under her shift as she stiffens and calls a chip off a nearby stalactite on the ceiling which comes rushing down into the water. The glowing stone impacts on the living water, which hisses in pain and anger.
Irdril just did nearly as much damage to the water weird as everyone else has thus far. Also, you'll only need another athletics check to hang on if you try to do something vigorous on the rock, like make a weapon attack.
