Lorenz will arrive first in round 16. Ishirou will arrive in round 17. Urza took a couple rounds to mourn Aerys and heal himself. He'll arrive in round 19. Jask will arrive at the same time as Urza. Gelik will arrive several rounds later (he only has a speed of 20). Aakif and Makoa were fatigued from raging and couldn't run right away. I'm still working out when they'll arrive. :)

Makoa will arrive in round 20. Aakif will arrive in round 29 (he used twice as many rage rounds as Makoa).

Also Mahjik ought to burst onto the road not far from the approaching Lorenz in the next round

Since the actions of the others shouldn't affect Mahjik at this stage, here are his actions:

Round 14, Initiative 18
AC 21; HP 7/32

Mahjik withdraws some more, bounding along hard at the edge to the thicker forests he weaves between trees and bushes heading northwards to the road. Withdraw action, Mahjik tries to keep trees and stuff between him and the cannibals, so they cannot charge him but are limited to a double-move to keep up.

As he dodges passed the north-most cannibal he cusses at him(her?) loudly: "Bad breath you have! Wise man would refuse to be eaten by one of poor hygiene!"

Perception 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

If this is enough to pick up on approaching rescuers, Mahjik will add more shouting to his repertoire.

MINOR CORRECTION

I forgot that cannibals #17 and 18 have now run out of rage rounds. They are looking noticeably tired and their attack and damage bonuses should have been lower. #17 still hits Pezock, but does 3 points less damage. #18 still misses Sasha. :)

Don't suppose either of them want to drop dead from loss of temporary hit points? Because otherwise their AC just went up. :)

Douena will delay until either cannibal #18 is dead or, if they can't kill him, until after Sasha's and Pezock's turns.

Watching the cannibals chase after Mahjik with a worried look, Douena uses her message spell just in case any of these people understand Common.

messaged:
"Listen! If you can kill this one, try to make a dash for the old lady's hut. If you can hold the door shut, Desna can heal you in there without me worrying about healing the cannibals, too."

I'm assuming there's no open windows in the walls. Mahjik is still in range so he knows where we plan to go.

AC went up, but they also fatigued. They'll lose attack, damage and AC from that.

LoreKeeper wrote:

The net result is the AC goes up by 1 (up 2 from no longer raging, down 1 from fatigue). Alas #18 is not quite dead. He's still a low level character, so the drop in hp is not very big.

Sasha rapier on #18, flanking: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 = 9 -- miss
Sasha kukri on #18, flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7 -- miss
Wow, Sasha just cannot get a break.

Sasha yells in annoyance as #18 still manages to avoid her attacks even while distracted by Pezock.

As Mahjik moves past and taunts #22, she sneers and swipes at him. There's no way to avoid an AoO from at least 1 of them (only first square counts as unthreatened), so I've moved him so that only 1 can get him, to H49.

Cannibal #22 AoO broken scimitar on Mahjik: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 -- miss

She sneers and yells as he moves away from her unharmed. She and the other two with her move again to try and cut him off. Mahjik can just make out Lorenz in the distance running along the trail.

The remaining cannibals in the village move to attack Douena, Sasha, and Pezock.

#19 and #20 are looking noticeably winded and tired.

Cannibal #17 broken scimitar on Sasha, flanking: 1d20 + 1 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 1 - 1 + 2 = 20

Cannibal #24 broken scimitar on Douena: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 -- hit

Sasha tries valiantly to avoid the numerous swords coming her way. She manages to avoid taking anymore cuts, but she does take a couple of thumps that knock her over cold. In poetic justice, however, #18 collapses right after making his attack. Pezock and Douena each take hits as well. Their rolls are crazy this round.

Since Mahjik has managed to move the battle (at least part of it) east, the members of Group A will reach here one round earlier, meaning Lorenz will arrive this round.

Mahjik hisses as Sasha falls. "Damn mime! It's his fault!" He backs off to the hut. Withdraw action into the hut to W25.

Next Up: Douena, Sasha (unconscious), Mahjik, Cannibals, Lorenz, Pezock.

If I can retcon a little and take Douena's delayed turn before Pezock's....

"Pezock!" she scolds him, as he starts to move toward the hut. "Pick up Sasha! I can't carry her ... and we're going to need her to fight the cannibals!" she adds, knowing where Pezock's priorities lie.

Move to W25; ready an action to channel energy when Pezock carries Sasha in (There's no downed cannibals outside the door, so the burst shouldn't get them): 1d6 ⇒ 2 :P At least it heals both nonlethal and lethal; it might get her on her feet.

Douena Trestleben wrote:

That's acceptable. However, Pezock would have to move 5 ft to pick Sasha up, thus preventing him from moving any farther this round. As such, he ignores Douena's command. He withdraws to W24.

"I couldn't get to her," he grumbles as the healing washes over him. "It's that mime's fault. But don't worry. We'll hold them off here, and then save the dimorphodon mother."

Round 15, Initiative 18

As he sees Lorenz approaching a sigh of relief escapes Mahjik. "Hurry! Lorenz! I've got 3 on me here - and the village has another 7 or so that are overwhelming the others! I've been badly hurt and need help quickly!" Mahjik switches tactics, his looping stride reverting to a series of acrobatic leaps and tumbles to thwart the attacks of the cannibals. Mahjik easily dodges out of the way of cannibals #20 and #23, but #22 swings at him as he passes.

DM, is there any kind of furniture in this room that would indicate what it's used for? I assume it's not just empty.

Douena Trestleben wrote:

Ah yes, a description of the room would probably be handy. :)

This is a small workshop. There are several shelves full of bottles and vials, as well as a few sacks, sticks, leaves, and bits of vine. There's a chemical scent in the air.

Male Human (Andoran) Fighter Lvl 5

DM, in my last post I stated that Lorenz picked up the scimitar the red-headed cannibal was using and retrieved his bow on the way. My original plan was to stow the bow away and go to melee for the rest of the combat but I never actually stated that. Given that's the case, is it okay to assume that Lorenz still has the cannibal's scimitar in hand?

Seeing Mahjik stumble onto the path in front of him, bloody and beaten, Lorenz feels his heart skip a beat with fear for his companions.

"I'm coming!" he shouts and charges forward, bringing his new sword around in a fierce overhead chop.

Charge Cannibal #20, ending move at D52.

For the sake of expedience (and the inability for the village section to affect Mahjik and Lorenz this round), here's Mahjik:

Round 16, Initiative 18 (or before cannibals in any case)
AC 21; HP 7/32

The sudden distraction of Lorenz hurtling down the path and near skewering the cannibal is all Mahjik needs to dodge under a wild swing of one cannibal and deliver a deadly series of attacks. He concludes his flurry with a small adjustment of his spacing, leaving the room wide open for Lorenz to power through. 5ft step to C51

Attack, flurry 1, power attack 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 1 = 19 damage 1d6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 2 = 8
Attack, flurry 2, power attack 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 4 - 1 = 22 damage 1d6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 2 = 9

Mahjik will first attack #20, the one hit by Lorenz. Should #20 drop, his next attack will go against #22 - the one he hit with the readied action last turn.

Finally! A real round of attacks! :D

Sure, that's no problem. Lorenz also has an additional +1 on his attack roll as he is still under the effects of bless (there are still a few rounds left on that).

Lorenz charges in. The scimitar is exceptionally well made and glides through the air. It almost seems to guide his arms and body to the right spot to cause the most damage. The exhausted cannibal #20 reels from the blow.

Douena opens the door to the next room in the hut, hoping to find another way out.

A horrible stench greets Douena's nose. Behind the door is a filthy bedroom decorated with hundreds of tiny bones and feathers hanging from twine. There is no other way out, not even a window. The map oddly shows some sort of large crate where, in fact, there should be a bed of rotting and soiled cloths.

Mahjik unleashes a series of devastating attacks on #20, first staggering the cannibal, then cracking his skull and sending him to the ground. Mahjik steps back away.

#22 and #23 move up to engage Mahjik and Lorenz, while by the old woman's hut, #24 tries to push Pezock out of the way to let her compatriots through.

Mahjik spots an opening in the cannibal's defense as Ishirou's blade slices into the woman. Full run when possible, otherwise taking double-moves, following Mahjik's directions to the best of his ability. 30' movement.

Edit to add: If only a double move is possible, it looks like it'll take him 4 rounds to get to the hut (assuming no attacks enroute). That doesn't look good for Douena and the NPCs. Yikes!

If worst comes to worst then I hope they don't go all-out to slay each person that is only unconscious. I imagine evil cannibal rituals require torturous killing and eating of live specimens. There is always hope!

To the west, the jungle thins out as it gets closer to the village, so it's no longer considered difficult terrain. However, there are still obstacles (all those tree trunks), so a full run is not possible. Lorenz's best option is a full run along the trail to the north of town for 1 round, then double moves after that. He should be able to get there on the 3rd round that way. I'll assume he does that. He arrives at F25.

I don't know if she'd want to, but she could try to hold the door closed, in which case it would come down to cannibal CMB roll vs Douena's CMD roll (or however you would adjudicate that).

DM, am I correct in assuming that this door opens into the bedroom and not out into the smaller workshop?
Yes, it does, so Douena could easily slam the door on the cannibals if she wanted. They could easily open it again, but it would use up a move action for one of them.

Considering the whole of her tactical plan right now is to survive until reinforcements arrive, sounds like a good deal.

Douena slams the door in the face of the cannibal who just cut her with his rusty scimitar. Hope Jask or Aycenia or someone has remove tetanus if we survive this battle. Leaning against it, she looks around the room to survey her limited options. "Desna, I'm in a really tight spot," she pleads, as she grips her holy symbol. Channel Positive Energy 1d6 ⇒ 6

Yes! Way to come through, Desna! :) As her goddess's healing power flows through her, closing the cut she just received, she flattens herself against the northern wall of the hut so that the door will conceal her when the cannibals push it open. With Desna's own luck, the Not-Sneakies might still come to her rescue.

Stealth check for when the door opens and she is concealed behind it 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29 Hopefully, even if the cannibals see her behind it, they'll have to use another move action to "open" the door from in front of her to get to her.

I don't know if she'd want to, but she could try to hold the door closed, in which case it would come down to cannibal CMB roll vs Douena's CMD roll (or however you would adjudicate that).

Yes, it would be CMB vs. CMD.

I'll follow after Lorenz and Ishirou.

Lorenz's best option is a full run along the trail to the north of town for 1 round, then double moves after that. He should be able to get there on the 3rd round that way. I'll assume he does that. He arrives at F25.[/ooc]

Actually that's what I meant to do all along. I figured it'd be a lot faster to travel along the path than through the jungle. I just foolishly neglected to be appropriately precise about my intentions. Thanks!

I'm running for the village as fast as I can.

Round 19, Initiative 18
AC 21; HP 7/32

Mahjik approaches Jask just enough to get into healing range, then - as the healing magic washes over him - he immediately begins hustling back to the village, the way he came, through the lightly grown parts of the jungle. Double move action

Let's hope that channeling is good!

Douena slams the door shut and calls upon Desna for some healing, then presses herself against the wall.

DM Stuff:
Pezock stabilization check: 1d20 + 1 - 7 ⇒ (1) + 1 - 7 = -5 -- fail

Outside, Urza hurries after Lorenz and Ishirou (reaching D29).

Mahjik moves 5 ft closer to get into range of Jask, who then channels. Makoa is currently in range of the channel as well.

Jask channel energy: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Could be worse.

Mahjik then wheels around and heads for the village.

In the hut, the cannibals push open the door and look inside. They can't beat that Stealth check, so I won't bother rolling. #21 and #19 move up to the bed and start to look underneath it, while #17 moves into the room and begins to stare around it. Douena has earned herself a round's reprieve! :)

Outside, Lorenz continues south through the village (to R27), while Makoa makes all haste to the village (reaching D36, which is in the black area, so he doesn't show up on the map). Ishirou follows Lorenz (reaching Q25).

ROUND 20

Active Magical Effects:
Bless (Group A) -- last full round that this will be in effect; it will expire on Jask's turn in round 21
Mage armour (Mahjik and Urza)
Shield (Urza)
Shield of faith (Aakif)
Comprehend languages (Douena)
Message (Group B)
Mirror image (Urza, 3 images)

Next Up: Douena, Urza, Sasha (unconscious), Jask, Mahjik, Cannibals, Lorenz, Makoa, Ishirou, Gelik.

Cannibal Village Map Updated

Douena tries to quiet her heartbeat as she realizes she is surrounded by cannibals who will soon realize there's only one other possible hiding place in this room other than under the bed....

Douena will go Total Defense, giving her an AC of 20 and hope Desna is watching out for her when they look behind the door....

Hopefully, I saw which way Ishirou and Lorenz went.
Full Move

Mahjik keeps going through the jungle at high speed. Double Move

As he approaches the edge of the village he bellows a mighty: "CANNIBALISTIC CURS! Come and get me!!" His shout rolls over the village, startling the cannibals in their search mission.

You ought to see them when you round the corner on the path anyway....

DM, the way I read message, once Mahjik is back in range, he ought to be able to receive messages again as long as the duration hasn't expired: "...the message is audible to all targeted creatures within range." Does that agree with the way you read it?

By my reckoning, Mahjik should make it pretty close to the hut this round since he's pretty fast and cutting through the forest. Somewhere between X29 and U31, I think. His yell should be quite easy to hear.

Douena prepares to defend herself, and Urza continues into the village. He reaches the body of the old woman (at N25). Jask runs along the trail towards the city (reaching D33 in the black area).

DM Stuff:
Pezock stabilization check: 1d20 + 1 - 8 ⇒ (7) + 1 - 8 = 0 -- fail

Meanwhile, Mahjik makes his way through the jungle to the village (reaching V29) and yells to gain the attention of the cannibals.

Inside the hut, Douena and the cannibals hear Mahjik's yell (and yes, Mahjik is back within range of the message spell at this point and can receive whispered messages from Douena). #19 and #21 rush out of the bedroom to engage him. As soon as they're gone #17, swings the door shut to reveal Douena's hiding place.

Cannibal #17 broken scimitar on Douena: 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 - 1 = 13 -- miss
Cannibal #19 broken scimitar on Mahjik: 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 - 1 = 9 -- miss
Cannibal #21 broken scimitar on Mahjik: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 -- miss

All three of them attack their respective targets, and all three of them miss.

Next Up: Lorenz, Makoa, Ishirou, Gelik, Douena, Urza, Sasha (unconscious), Jask, Mahjik, Cannibals.

Douena whispers a quick prayer of gratitude to Desna when she hears Mahjik's call. Ready to be discovered, she easily sidesteps the cannibal's scimitar.

messaged to Mahjik:
"I'm in the hut. Pezock's down. Hurry!"
