Makoa Wolf'sKin wrote:Pardon my ignorance, but I still don't know what your vote actually was, then. Continue or go back to camp?
That being said, my vote wasn't based on whether they move away.
I got the impression we were actually stopping to wait. For what, I'm not sure, but that was the impression I got. Consider mine a vote to go back then. We know the way now, and can get here quicker.
Lorenz Aeryson |
Lorenz scratched his head. The heat must be getting to him, he was getting a little confused.
"I'm not very good at counting, but as far as I can tell it's three in favor of trying to continue and three in favor of returning to camp. How do we make the final decision? Draw straws? Ask the horse? Have a rope tug?"
He knelt down to scratch at his ankle. "I hate to return with only extra rope to show for our efforts. Without a seashell for Sasha and some sort of encouragement for Aerys, it's going to make for an uncomfortable night."
Douena Trestleben |
"But what if there's a way down to the beach just over the next ridge?" Douena wheedles. "Just a little farther? It'll take us less time to get back than it took to walk here because we won't have to climb down to the shipwreck again. We can still make it back before dark."
Urza Sha'rahad |
"To hell with Aerys. Though I would be happy to return with a shell for Sasha, today she will have to settle for snake meat and rope. We can go out tomorrow and explore some more."
Navior |
As you are trying to decide whether to turn back or not, you hear the sound of flapping, and two more of the creatures fly over top of you towards the cliff edge. They join the others there and then shortly afterwards, all of them fly down below the top of the cliff. You can still hear occasional squawks indicating they haven't gone far down the cliffside.
Lorenz Aeryson |
Lorenz watched the creatures fly down. "I wonder what they're doing down there?" He looked out into the distance with a thoughtful expression on his face. Then he shook his head and turned back to the group.
"I wasn't counting the snake because I'm not sure some of the others have gone hungry long enough to appreciate snake meat. I'm admittedly curious to see what snake tastes like but it's not like it's the sort of delicacy that's making me forget that I'm shipwrecked in the middle of nowhere." He grimaced slightly at the remains Makoa were carrying.
"So, we're at a tie. Are you three really going to deny Douena her chance at a seashell? Look at how disappointed she is!"
Mahjik the Flink |
Mahjik has a mischievous grin on his face, it isn't immediately obvious (especially to Douena) but the fly that is bothering her ear for the last few minutes is really a long piece of grass that Mahjik tickles her ear with. "Wise man suggests to not do tomorrow what can be done today. That said, I'm also curious what these flying reptiles are doing. There's a possibility that we'll lose out on whatever has caught their attention."
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
"If it's a nest they went to.. Sasha might like an egg to hatch better than a shell, she could even train it to help her hunt.." Makoa says as he glances toward the last place the dimorphodons were visible.
I would call him WolfWing and he would be mine![/slight cartoon reference]
Lorenz Aeryson |
"If it's a nest they went to.. Sasha might like an egg to hatch better than a shell, she could even train it to help her hunt.." Makoa says as he glances toward the last place the dimorphodons were visible.
Lorenz frowned. "Whatever gave you that idea? Surely Sasha wouldn't be interested in one of those creatures. They're rather ugly what with those leathery wings and the teeth. She strikes me more as a woman that would want something colorful and pretty, like a bird with, I don't know, feathers?"
Glad that Mahjik was still in favor of pressing on, Lorenz said, "I've never known any wise men but father always said, 'There's no sense putting off 'til tomorrow what you can get done today.' Not that I ever followed that rule, but that's beside the point."
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
"It doesn't have to be 'pretty and colorful' for someone to like, no matter who they are. Something to keep her company while she hunts may be a welcome addition by the time it hatches."
"If you want to see what is going on, I'll stay close behind so if they see you, they won't see me. They might see the javelin though..."
Douena Trestleben |
"I can go peek over the edge of the cliff," Douena offers. "I can be pretty sneaky when I want to be."
Stealth roll unless someone jumps in to stop her pretty quick 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Ha! Obviously she doesn't "want to be" very sneaky right now.
EDIT: She's going to "sneak" up the edge of the cliff, lie prone & peek over to see what the flying things are up to. Hopefully, she doesn't actually knock any rocks down on their heads.
Double edit to reply to the post below: I don't know; Mahjik could probably roll 1d20+4 and get more than a 10.
Navior |
Douena scurries out of the jungle and to the edge of the cliff. Looking over, she sees, about 20 feet down, a large outcropping of rock. The dimorphodons have built a nest on the outcropping. There are five dimorphodons altogether.
Dimorphon Perception checks (-2 penalty for distance):
Perception: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 - 2 = 9
Perception: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 - 2 = 11
Perception: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 - 2 = 13
Perception: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 - 2 = 23
Perception: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 2 = 22
Three of them look straight up at her as she looks down. They squawk angrily, baring teeth. They don't look happy that you've approached their nest. They spread their wings, ready to leap into the air.
I need a bit of time to prepare the map for this. I'll get that ready soon, and update with initiative rolls and such. :)
Navior |
Okay, the map is ready. You'll find it on the site as "Dimorphodon nest". A few notes: Since the dimorphodons can fly, I've added labels to indicate their current height relative to the top of the cliff (which is the baseline, since that's the level the party is at. A blue circle indicates the creature is below the baseline. No circle indicates at or above the baseline. The number over top of the creature indicates how far above or below the creature is (in feet). Hopefully the numbers are readable. If you're having difficulty making them out, please let me know.
Aakif Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Douena Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Lorenz Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Mahjik Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Makoa Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Urza Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Dimorphodons Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Roll-off between Aakif and Makoa:
Aakif: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Makoa: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Order: Lorenz, Douena, Dimorphodons, Aakif, Makoa, Mahjik, Urza.
There will be a surprise round during which only Douena and the 3 dimorphodons that spotted her will be able to act.
SURPRISE ROUND
Up First: Douena
Douena Trestleben |
@Douena - Run!
Sadly: Prone.
Douena's eyes open wide as she sees the creatures looking directly up at her. Turning her head back toward the other party members, she shouts, "Hide!"
EDIT: Darn it, what are the odds she rolls a 3 again?!?
Navior |
There are lots of small plants and leaves and such on the ground to hide in.
Douena crawls away from the edge, keeping herself flat against the ground, and tries to get as much of the ground material over top of her as possible.
The 3 dimorphodons launch into the air, attempting to fly straight up to the top of the cliff.
Fly checks to fly straight up:
Dimorphodon at AR -93: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Dimorphodon at AS -93: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Dimorphodon at AU -93: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Two of them manage it and fly straight up 30 feet (placing them 10 feet above the top of the cliff). The third one (at AS -93) is forced to take a more leisurely climb, and heads northwards, rising gradually to 5 feet below the top of the cliff (reaching AN -93).
Perception checks to notice Douena:
Dimorphodon at AR -93: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 - 2 = 21
Dimorphodon at AU -93: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 - 2 = 9
Douena has total cover relative to the Dimorphodon at AN -93, so it cannot see her.
One of them sees her and squawks menacingly.
ROUND 1
Up Next: Lorenz, Douena, Dimorphodons, Aakif, Makoa, Mahjik, Urza.
Map Updated
Lorenz Aeryson |
Round One:
Moving carefully through the underbrush, Lorenz took a position behind a tree, readying his bow as he moved and unstrapping his shield when he got in to place.
Lorenz moves to AO-78 drawing the bow as he did so and used his standard action to put away his shield.
Douena Trestleben |
Peering out of her hiding place, Douena doesn't yet see the creatures coming over the edge of the cliff, so she decides to take a chance and run for better cover a little further away. Seriously, she's got to roll better than a 3, right? Move action: stand from prone; Move to clump of trees at AW -86. Stealth 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
That's three 3's on Stealth in a row!!! :P At least she's further away.
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
Hopefully, the saying "Bad things happen in threes" is true. It certainly seems true for our little cleric so far...
Makoa draws a javelin and brings his arm back to throw it as soon as a dimorphdons is in range...
Just get close enough you ugly primordial chickens! I've got a readied action with your name on it!
Navior |
Wow, those Stealth rolls. Poor Douena.
The two dimorphodons that flew straight up last time, curve to a gentler climb and move out over the cliff edge (to AR -90 and AU -90 ten feet up). The other one already flying continues its longer route, making it just above the cliff line (at AN -92 five feet up).
Perception checks to notice Douena:
Dimorphodon at AR -90: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 5 - 4 = 15
Dimorphodon at AU -90: 1d20 + 5 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 5 - 3 = 16
Dimorphodon at AN -92: 1d20 + 5 - 6 ⇒ (9) + 5 - 6 = 8
The two nearest ones notice her. However, they've used all their movement for this turn.
The remaining two in the nest attempt to fly straight up.
Fly checks to fly straight up:
Dimorphodon at AS -94: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Dimorphodon at AT -94: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
They fly straight up 30 feet.
Up Next: Aakif, Makoa, Mahjik, Urza.
Map Updated
Urza Sha'rahad |
"I wanted to go back to camp, but no she just had to go and aggravate the carnivorous birds." Urza complains. As if being stranded on an island, being attacked by crab-scorpion things, fighting off undead, and being hunted by giant snakes wasn't enough, now we have a flock of razor beaked seagulls mad at us. Urza casts Shield and moves next to Lorenz.
Mahjik the Flink |
Mahjik moves to AR-75 and uses his standard action to go make use of total defense (AC increases to 21). Trying to draw the scaly birds away from Douena and into the party's ranged kill-zone.
Mahjik rushes south passed Aakif towards into the clearing between the trees, issueing loud irate squawks mimicking the screeches the dimorphodons make. Perform (mime) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 In spite of Mahjik's chicken dance, experienced warriors can tell that his stance and attention to the scaly birds is highly cautious, ready to dodge any attacks that may assail him.
Mahjik also throws a quick glance around to see if any light rocks or sticks are nearby that would be suitable as light improvised weapons 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Lorenz Aeryson |
Round Two:
Watching events unfold, Lorenz cursed under his breath. "Cayden's piss, even I can see her." With Mahjik acting like a fool, he hoped that dim-birds would rise to the bait. He held his arrow nocked and ready to shoot.
Remain in position. Ready to fire at any bird that moves into or through column -82 and no more than 30' above ground.
Readied Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
Aakif prepares his bow and Makoa readies to toss a javelin.
Makoa, by "in range", I take it you mean within a single range increment?
Up Next: Mahjik, Urza, Lorenz.
Yes, though if it doesn't look like they're going to come any closer, I'll move up to them.
Navior |
Mahjik's squawks are not very good imitations of the ones the dimorphodons make, but he does draw attention to himself nonetheless. There are numerous small rocks and sticks on the ground that can be used as improvised weapons.
Urza then casts his spell and moves up to Lorenz.
ROUND 2
Lorenz prepares to fire an arrow.
Up Next: Douena, Dimorphodons, Aakif, Makoa, Mahjik, Urza.
Map Updated
Douena Trestleben |
Glancing between the big birds that have obviously seen her and the rest of the party still so far away, Douena fingers her holy symbol. "Need to move a little faster, Desna," she murmurs. casting expeditious retreat With an astonishing burst of speed, she breaks from her cover and runs, ending up in a another clump of trees near Mahjik. Move to AV -74
Navior |
Douena zips across the ground.
The dimorphodons see her and screech as she does so. One (at AU -90) sets off after her, flying down beneath the branches of the trees and straight towards her (reaching AV -78). The other close one (at AR -90) instead flies for Mahjik, also lowering down to get beneath branches. As it does so, it passes through Lorenz's line of sight, and he lets loose his arrow. The arrow shoots through the air and nips the wing of the dimorphodon. It screeches in pain.
Fly check to avoid losing altitude: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
It continues on, passing next into sight and range of Makoa, who throws his javelin.
Javelin: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
The javelin just misses its mark, and the beast flies on (reaching AQ -78).
The dimorphodon that was taking the gentle way up the slope now turns and makes straight for Mahjik (making it to AQ -81).
The remaining two shoot out in the general direction of Mahjik and Douena (ending at AR -82 and AS -82).
Next Up: Aakif, Mahjik, Urza, Douena.
Map Updated
Aakif |
Aakif shoots an arrow at the bird-reptile-thing streaking towards Douena, but the fast-moving creature is too small a target. Muttering a curse in his native tongue, he drops the bow and moves forward to intercept the nearest creature, drawing his falchion once again.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Navior |
After Mahjik unsuccessfully attacks a dimorphodon, Urza moves up (to AP -80, concentration check successful) and sends forth a cone of brilliant colours that spray out and up, surrounding two of the dimorphodons (at AQ -81 and AR -82).
Will save for Dimorphodon at AQ -81: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Will save for Dimorphodon at AR -82: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Duration: Unconscious, blinded and stunned for 2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 rounds; then blinded and stunned for 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds; then stunned for 1 round.
One of the two dimorphodons wheels and drops from the sky like a rock (only five feet up though, so takes no damage).
ROUND 3
Up Next: Douena, Lorenz, Makoa, Dimorphodons, Aakif, Mahjik, Urza.
Map Updated The red circle around the dimorphodon at AQ -81 indicates that it is unconscious.
Douena Trestleben |
Displaying another preternatural burst of speed, Douena gives the flying creatures a wide berth and runs up between Lorenz and Makoa. Move up to AN -74, then left to AN -77. Breathless, she reaches out to touch Lorenz's elbow. "Desna's own luck be with you," she blesses him. "Now hit one of them!" Bit of Luck on Lorenz: in the next round, whenever he rolls a d20, he can roll twice and take the higher.
expeditious retreat round 2/10
Lorenz Aeryson |
Feeling the blessing of Douena's God flood through him, Lorenz lifts his bow and aims for one of the creatures still flying out of reach.
"Down!" He cried and fired.
Attacking with bow the dimorphodon at AS-82. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Bit of Luck reroll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Crikey! That's no fair!
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
Makoa, knowing it would take longer to draw another javelin, slips a dart from his sleeve as he moves to help Urza and tosses it at one of the dimorphodons still flying.
Move to AP-82 and attacking the one in front of me.
Dart:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Damage:1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Navior |
A lot of bad luck on attack rolls so far!
Makoa's dart flies just beneath the dimorphodon.
The dimorphodon by Mahjik (AV -78) bites at him.
Bite attack on Mahjik: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 = 5
But it's a very clumsy attack. The beast then flies on, opening itself up to attack from Mahjik.
Meanwhile, the one in front of Aakif (AQ -78) also bites at him.
Bite attack on Aakif: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 = 5
It is just as clumsy as its friend. It then flies on, opening itself up to attack from Aakif.
The one that resisted Urza's spell (at AR -82) swoops round towards him to bite him.
Bite attack on Urza: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Urza Fortitude: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
No poison damage.
Its teeth sink deeply into Urza, injuring him quite significantly. It then flies on (Flyby Attack feat), but also opening itself to an attack in retaliation.
Finally, the remaining dimorphodon (at AS -82) turns for Makoa, swooping down to bite.
Bite attack on Makoa: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 1 = 15
It doesn't quite get through his defenses. It, too, continues to fly by (Flyby Attack feat).
Up Next: Attacks of opportunity (if desired) from Aakif, Mahjik, Makoa, and Urza followed by remainder of dimorphodon movement.
Map Updated
Urza Sha'rahad |
Urza tries to snap his mace up to fend off the dimorphodons attack, but fails.
Lt Mace: AoO 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Lt Mace: damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
