Sorry folks! Just been out all night!

Baradim will finish the translation and give a quick nod to Illiam before turning his attention to the cleric. "I am ready. If Laurel does not have the ingredients, perhaps she'll know where in the forest they may be. Let us get going, time is of the essence." He moves and whistles for Kanga to come, the large feline rising up and moving with them. As he walks, he begins to ponder the ingredients and where they could be found.

Now as Dolok's running down the street he's thinking to himself, "Drill? I'm not even sure I know what that is? I'll check into it some other time, but it will have to wait until after this cure!"

Battle Grid

As the group, sans Dolok, who can actually be heard in the distance yelling Excuse me! Coming through! makes their way to Laurel's Roots and Remedies, Baradim explains that some of the ingredients on the list aren't very hard to find at all. Mint is readily cultivated and grown, in fact many of the locals have pots of mint in their windows just for its fragrance. Fire-newts, are also not rare at all, many of the children in town spend a lazy afternoon trying to capture them by the riverbanks where they search for water bugs to eat. Fire-newts regrow their tails and drop them voluntarily if caught by their tail. Purple asters grow wild in meadows all around the vale. That, though, is the extent of his knowledge of the ingredients. What elderwood moss, rat-tail root, or ironbloom mushrooms are, he does not know. Which all the more rests the groups hope firmly on Laurel's herb lore.

As the group is approaching Roots and Remedies they hear Dolok's voice once again, this time coming up the street behind them. Wait! wait! I got her. He says, and arrives slightly winded from his sprint to the church. Lady Cirthana, as only a lady could do, looks not at all the worse for the wear of having run with Dolok across town.

She looks at everyone individually but then most closely at Kairon and Lunarinus. Necromancy... She sighs, and for the first time you see cracks in her noble facade. Fear, real fear, shows in the gentle twist of her brow. She continues, Dolok said you found a recipe for a supposed cure, and that the message mentioned burning the bodies of the dead. If what the book says is true, I fear this might be only just the beginning of something far worse than I... She pauses for a moment. Than we thought. We must get Laurel's input as soon as possible. She says, and at that moment the group follows Illiam into Laurel's shop, once again moving past her long line of customers. It is obvious to Laurel, by Lady Cirthana's presence among you that something is amiss and she once again empties her shop of patrons.

Everybody OUT! Now. I'm closing for the day. Shew. She says, coming around from behind the counter and urging people out with wild gesticulation. Out, out, out. I'll open again on the morrow, god's willing with more helpful brews to ease this plague. She says trying to offer some sort of hope in the face of this ailment.

Once the shop is empty but for the envoy, and the handful of valers. She locks the double locks, and says, So he is with you? Pointing at the halfling.

Well, Illaim, which is his name, is with us now. He has just rendered us and this town a great service, he is fluent in Elvish, and this was required to translate the part of this monstrously disorganised tome

Chillel points to the large book.

which gives a cure to Blackscour. The part in question, translated into common by our halfling friend, reads:-

Beware the denizens that bring Necrotic Death.

Sown by necromancy, malice, and the seeds of death, this fungus does not grow naturally. It is a spite upon the living, a plague brought by those that wish to rule a realm of the dead. It must be purged with arcane fire and holy water. The cure for those that have contracted the plague of the Necrotic Death requires ingestion of the following ingredients steeped in a tea, the water for which must be holy water: twelve fire-newt tails, nine dried purple aster flowers, three sprigs of mint, two sprigs of elderwood moss, one pickled rat-tail root, and seven dried and powdered ironbloom mushrooms. These ingredients are enough to steep five gallons of tea, and should be doubled for ten gallons, and so on. This tea has been found to cure the disease of Necrotic Death in as little as four hours, but it has also proven ineffective for those that have been suffering from the disease for more than seven days. If someone has had the disease for seven days or more, the only thing that can be offered is prayers, for they will succumb.

Then on the same page in a different hand, in capitals:-

BURN THE BODIES THAT DIE FROM THE NECROTIC DEATH.

It is the only thing that offers a cure anyone has found. We don't know what elderwood moss, rat-tail root, or ironbloom mushrooms are. We are hoping you can tell us or at least where they can be found.

The entry is in Sylvan. Illiam corrects, But it only calls the disease Necrotic Death. There was a note in faded Elven that was the only mention of Blackscour, saying that it was the same thing as Necrotic Death.

Illiam pauses for a moment, before impatiently adding So, do you have the ingredients for the cure or not?

Knowing the severity of the disease (and that he has most likely been exposed) has made Illiam much more of a team player, for the moment at least.

Show me the original entry, if you would. Laurel says, and Lunarinus heaves the hefty tome out of his pack, unwraps it from his bedroll and sets it on her counter. The page itself is easy to find since the edges of the pages near it are all slightly burnt. When Lunarinus opens the book to the page, she notices the burnt edges and gives him a quizzical look. He just points at Dolok, and says, don't ask. She looks over the entry for a moment, and taps her finger against her full lips repeatedly. After perusing it for a moment, she looks at the group and says, I don't think things are quite as grim as you may have originally thought. It just so happens that I speak Sylvan myself, among a handful of other languages. This word "mükəmməl" means perfect, which could mean "holy," but I think here it just means, purified, meaning all impurities are removed. So, no need to empty the holy water censers. As for the ingredients. the first three are no problem, in fact I have a massive amount of all three of them on stock, and can call in some favors to greatly increase my stocks from the locals in a day or two. The last three though... She walks away from the book, behind the counter, and reaching under the counter pulls up another book, a green canvas bound journal. After flipping through it for just a few moments, she claps it shut and sets it down. Elderwood moss is a moss that only grows on the eldest tree in a forest. Ironbloom mushrooms tend to grow, rather rapidly actually, on rusting and decaying iron, funnily enough. If there were going to be some in close proximity, I'd say they're probably growing on the rusting forges of the old Dwarven monastery at the base of Droskar's Crag. She pauses again, and this time looks right at Lady Cirthana when she speaks. As for pickled rat-tail root. I have no idea whatsoever, but I know someone that might. There's a witch that lives somewhere in the forest. My mother used to trade secrets with her occasionally. Her name is Ulizmilla, she's a recluse, but not dangerous, at least so far as I know from my mother's stories. My guess is, if anyone around here knows, she does. Unfortunately that leaves us grasping at gossamer webs for two vital ingredients. Who even knows where the eldest tree of the woods is? The situation may not be terrible, but we've definitely got our work cut out for us, that's for certain. She says, exhaling sharply.

I used Azerbaijani for Sylvan.

If we have to go into the Darkmoon wood for these ingredients, so be it. Though I do believe we'll want to tackle such a trek after another sunrise. A ruined monastery and a reclusive witch don't frighten me. However, bodies rising from their graves through necromantic magic does. My first priority must be to cleanse the bodies of the deceased. Lady Cirthana, will you accompany me to entreat the local magistrate for authority to exhume the bodies of those that have died of this necromancy so that they can be properly burned? Is it the magistrate to whom we should speak? Or Gavel Kreed? Kairon, what do you think of these matters?

Then we should split up and gather as much information as possible this evening, then. I know someone who might know something, and I'm supposed to meet him in a few hours anyway. That gnome shopkeeper knows more than he's letting on.

The lumber company probably knows something about this big tree. I mean, how big could these woods be, right? I mean, anyone who spends that much time in the woods may even have seen this witch!

Turning to the locals, Anyone else in town that might know about the tree, the witch, the other ingredients? Or maybe necromancy? Or who might know more about any kind of magic then the people in this room?

Good to read ya again, Yirangle!

Kreed, the magistrate, and the sheriff need to be notified, for sure. With them, Lady Cirthana, Laurel, and me, we'll have solid ground to let people know what's going on in terms of law, business, and faith -- if we can show 'em . . . consensus, yeah, should do a lot to keep people calm as may be. Probably gonna be a lot of uproar, anyhow, once the tally of those past seven days is realized . . . .

I doubt quarantine is gonna be any help, since it's had so long to spread. Conventional medical wisdom is useless in this mess -- no offense intended to anyone here, mind you. Means we're gonna have to do the hard part first, with the bodies of the dead. Which, really, hasn't been explained -- nothing we found in the text said why the bodies needed to be burned? Whether undeath or continued risk of another outbreak? At this, Kairon looks to Illiam, Baradim, and Chillel in turn. Was there anything else there that seemed out of place?

He continues while leaving the others to consider their replies, And I think we'll need to meet with "Ulizmilla" soonest -- if her knowledge helped make your journal what it is, Laurel, she'll have the best chance of helping with the elderwood and rat-tail. Then head for the old forges, find the mushrooms, and get back.

Lady Cirthana. Should we work out a combined service to carry out when it comes time to cremate those the Blackscour has taken? We'll likely need to address that part today . . . . May The Everlight shine on us -- necessary, but "not good" . . . . Unless the people are more understanding than I'd think . . . .

And Illiam's got some good ideas, there -- the lumberjacks should be able to help with any information about the woods, maybe the witch. Kairon nods earnestly to Illiam -- And I hope the person you're meeting has some good news for us! . . . We're gonna need it.

Somebody should see if the book has any other Sylvan entries written in the same hand. There could be more information about what happens to the bodies if they're not burned.

We'll definitely need the magistrate's consent before exhuming bodies. I don't think Kreed need know about it at all. None of the people that have died so far are lumberjacks or of any particular concern to him. Vamros Harg is the law in town, so his consent is all we need. As for the town and their concern with the exhuming, funeral ceremony and pyre. In this particular instance, I'm inclined to be of the mind that what they don't know can't hurt them. The cemetery is on the downside of the hill outside of town. The new graves will be easy to find because of the recently churned earth. There's been maybe just over a dozen deaths so far, and many of those were elderly or already sick of other ailments. I'm not sure how familiar you are with small towns Kairon, but we tend to let news spread slowly from person to person, rather than making grandiose announcements. If people see us burning the bodies, we'll explain to them why we're doing it, and within a day or two, the whole town will know anyway. She takes a step back then and looks out the window into the street. As for knowledge of the woods, and the ingredients, Ulizmilla may be our best contact, but we'll need someone to point out where she's been living lately, and for that I think we'll need to talk to the Consortium's ranger Milon Rhoddam. He's usually at the main lumber camp in the morning, it might be your best bet to try and find him there then, and let him know what's happening.

Well, back home, every announcement was a big deal -- maybe 'cause there we so few of us; yeah, your "small town" is a lot bigger than where I'm from. I was just worried that people might consider cremation a disrespect, y'know? Faith makes people do extreme things -- or sometimes excuse them.

Milon Rhoddam. Nearly forgot Kreed's . . . encouragement to check in at the lumber camp before heading for the woods . . . . Seems easy enough to work that into the plan.

Thanks Syrus. :)

It seems to me our course of action is to notify and get consent from Vamros Harg for the exhuming and burning of the bodies. Then, while there is still daylight left, taking care of that particularly gruesome work. If we all work at it together we can more than likely dig up and pile the bodies on a pyre before nightfall. A fairly grim way to spend an evening, unburying and burning the deceased, but it is what is necessary. After that's accomplished, I do believe a good meal and a decent night's rest at the Jak'a'napes is in order for Kairon, Goruck and myself, and I'm sure you all will want to check in on your homes and families. Those that desire to aid us can meet us at Jak's near daybreak, and we can all head out to find this Milon in the morning, if that's the best time to locate him. Lunarinus reshoulders his pack, and checks his gear and weapons again. Are we all in agreement?

To Chillel: What can you tell me about this Vade guy? Do you know him? It sounds like it will take some convincing to get any help from him.

Then, back to Dolok: Wait, Master Figueroa is the blacksmith, right? If we're in the area, maybe we can see about that drill I was looking for. If you come along, I'm sure we can get you back before any arcane fire is required.

It makes sense that Chillel is not needed for the body burning, but even if Chillel can get Illiam into the high market, neither of them has the diplomacy that is likely to be required to get anything out of Vade. It doesn't sound like he'd be interested in helping the way everyone else seems to. I mean, if it comes to it, Illiam could lie to him, but diplomacy (and the truth) is really a better approach here. Without someone with a high diplomacy score, I suspect this will be a wasted trip.

Whatever your plans, I urge you to get to them quickly. If these Sylvan words are true, we've already lost many members of the town to this disease, ill, now, beyond cure. Let us lose no more, if we can. For my own part I can tell you that I would not look to Vade for help. Hildrinsocks is tight-lipped, but he is a true friend to the Vale, and could be convinced to help. While you go about your evenings, I'll stay here and look through my books for anything else I might be able to offer in guidance. I'll come to Jak's in the morning and tell you anything I've found. Again, I suggest you waste no more time dallying, but go, and do what must be done. Laurel's voice bleeds stress with her urgent words, and she all but pushes the envoy from Almas and their newfound Vale comrades from her shop. Now, in the street, you must decide, follow Illiam in looking for local help, or follow Lunarinus and Lady Cirthana to the magistrate to garner permission to exhume and burn the bodies of those that have died of the Necrotic Death?

Sharvaros Vade? Well I can only pass on what is said about him.

Vade only seems to go out, or even be awake, at night. His son Savram runs errands for him all over town, usually to Brickasnurd's and Laurel's, bringing back spell components and alchemical ingredients. Sometimes large crates are delivered at the docks, just for Sharvaros, from places as far away as Mwangi.

Sharvaros Vade was an integral part of the founding of Falcon's Hollow, fighting off the fey that tried to deter it with his magic.

Other than that, nobody in town knows much at all. He built his tower on the hill, he stays there, light shining down during the dark hours.

Weird and a little ominous.

Laurel, I do not know where this town would be without you. Haste is indicated, I will be off.

With that Chillel leaves, following Illaim.

As soon as I'm robed up, I'll head straight to the cemetery.

"I agree with Laurel that trying to get any help from Vade would be a waste of time. I'm willing to go either to the magistrates or to Mr. Hildrinsocks, if you think I can be of any help there. Or if the group insists I will try to talk to Vade's son, but again I think that would be a waste of time."

Illiam is growing extremely suspicious of Dolok's unwillingness to try to talk to Vade. This man sounds shady, and if anyone knows shady, it's Illiam.

As the group begins to walk toward the town tribunal, Illaim steps in front of Dolok, forcing him to fall behind the group, and in a voice too low to be heard by the others (though Chillel probably would have stopped too), How can you be so sure that Vade won't be willing to help? He could be afflicted himself! And if he's not... Illiam seems lost in thought for a moment.

Listen, I don't know the man, but we know that there is necromancy involved here. If he sits up in his tower performing unknown magics while the town is afflicted with a necromantic plague... If he's working on a cure, he may already have some of the components we need, and if he's not, Illiam's voice drops even lower at this point, forcing Dolok to lean down to hear him then perhaps it is because he is the cause of this!

Either way, how can you tell me that he isn't worth investigating?!

Said in hushed tones as well, though certain words come out a little louder than others. "Investigating?! Well now, that is a completely different matter than asking him for help! He may well be worth investigating. He certainly seems suspicious to me and most of the other townsfolk as well! As far as asking him for help, I just don't think he'd be willing to help. First, we need to ascertain whether he has the disease himself, but it may not matter. Hells, from your description, it's possible that he's already found the cure on his own, or is close to it, and he's planning to keep it for himself and his son.

Realization spreads across Illiam's face, Has anyone seen him and this son of his at the same time? I've heard tales of age-defying magic...

Anyway, I think it's best not to tell him that we found a recipe for a cure. If he is behind it, he may be dangerous. Just ask him if there's any help he can provide. If necessary, we can tell him that we tried with Laurel and didn't find what we needed. It won't even be entirely untrue. If he is as unwilling to help as you suspect... well, that's where the real fun starts. Illiam says, beginning to smile.

Oh and we should really look for that drill first. It might come in handy.

At this, Illiam has to run to keep up with Dolok as he hurries toward the path up to The Perch.

Lady Cirthana waves at the speedy Dolok, with Illiam and Chillel following close behind. She calls to his back to remind him, as they turn the corner of the low market, right next to the magistrate's tribunal: Don't forget that Illiam and Chillel won't get into the hill district without your vouching Dolok! Then she turns to the entrance of the tribunal, looking to Lunarinus, Kairon, Baradim, and Goruck. I hope we are able to convince Vamros of the need to burn the recently deceased. Athena cannot speak, nor is she as intelligent as a human. She could scout as you say, though I cannot see through her eyes. I do not know if she can pass on a lot to us.

However, I do not think it is a wise to risk a confrontation with Vade at this time. He was involved in founding this town and fighting Fey to do so. He seems to be some kind of spell caster and perhaps a powerful one at that. If we are killed or captured there will be three fewer to assemble the cure for Blackscour. ^That should have said "...as Dolok slows to approach the guards..."

Kairon, Scipio paid for the rooms but as of yet has not gotten the keys. Also you might not want to get those robes on just yet...

After just under an hour of waiting, and watching other townsfolk enter and exit the tribunal's main chamber, the dwarf deputy who is acting as bailiff today, a rather fashionably dressed and groomed man, for anyone's standards, let alone a dwarfs', comes out and says to Cirthana, Your turn, m'lady. His voice is rather melodic and soothing, and his ice-blue eyes are piercing yet approachable. She smiles and thanks him. Thank you Tabrik. With that the well groomed dwarf, opens the large double doors to the tribunal's main chamber and announces The Lady Cirthana and coterie.

The room is wood, all wood, wooden floors, walls, benches, and a massive wooden desk, five feet off the ground and stained a honey brown. Behind the desk sits a jovial looking halfling, with multiple ear-piercings, welcoming eyes, and a ready smile. Good Morrow Lady Cirthana! He says with much overenthusiastic joy. What brings you to my tribunal today?

We have a request to make. Lady Cirthana hesitates and looks to Kairon, Lunarinus and even Goruck before she speaks again. We'd like the right to exhume the bodies of those that have died from this Blackscour taint, so that we can burn them. She says it matter of factly, but her voice takes on a nervous timbre, which gives away her emotional content.

Harg taps a quill pen against his cheek, and gives his dwarven bailiff a quizzical look. The dwarf just smiles and shrugs his shoulders.

Begging your pardon lady, but, why now?

Lady Cirthan sighs but presses forward. We've recently learned some new information about the disease, and it appears it may not be a natural disease at all. It may be borne of necromantic magic.

Vamros' brow furrows and he sets his quill pen to parchment and begins writing something. When he looks up he says, May be?! Might I know what the source of your information was?

Laurel's mother's tome. Iomedae's resident cleric says, as if that should explain everything.

Vamros looks much chagrined and places his quill pen back into a glass vial of black ink on the desk. He reaches for a wooden gavel, and spins it around in his fingers for a few moments. Laurel's dead mother's book? He says, and in that word you sense a conversation taking place between Vamros and Cirthana. A conversation no one else is privy to, a conversation of shared previous knowledge.

Lady Cirthana can only nod her head, seeming somewhat dejected. Yes. She says.

Suddenly the jovial halfling's demeanor takes on a very superior air, and a condescension that makes him appear very much as a judge. You want me to grant you permission to desecrate the hallowed ground of the Falcon's Hollow cemetery, to burn bodies that have already been buried for days now, because you read something in Laurel's dead mother's book of scraps? Strangely, when Vamros says it, like that, out loud, it really does seem like a rather far fetched request.

Immediately Cirthana seems out of her element and looks to any of the envoy to help her.

Previously as Dolok and his retinue approach the gate to The Perch...

Whoa there feller! Says the bulkily muscled and well armored guard on the right of the gate. Dolok, you can come and go up here as you please, but I have received no orders to allow Chillel up here, and I don't even know who that runt is. The guard says pointing at Iliam. Dolok recognizes the guard, Ahdun.

Ahdun and his current partner Prothalon step forward and cross their halberds to block the way. Where exactly do you think you're going? Ahdun says looking right at Chillel and Illiam.

The keys *are* in his possession, I believe, inscribed with room number names. Or did I miss an edit? EDIT: I *did* miss an edit. Ha!

Magistrate Harg. I am Kairon Daaltin, priest of Sarenrae, envoy to Falcon's Hollow in this time of crisis. Maybe we should examine the bodies in light of the testimony of Laurel's mother's journal, and then we can go from there. There is no effort or desire on our part to desecrate the dead's remains, but the only hint we have about solving this puzzle warns us to burn the dead bodies, even after a cure has been found. Since the needed reagents for the cure force us to go into the wilds, we wanted to deal with what was closest at hand. I do not ask that you take my word for it, but I *would* request that someone you trust go with us as we check to see if the bodies pose an additional threat. If you only believe what is before your eyes, and the word of a follower of the Dawnflower carries no weight with you, then think of the request like this: we want to make sure that no one else can be infected, or the fungus spread, from the dead.
