Yacoub raises his sword and moves in again...
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
He seems irritated that he's missed again, baring his teeth in a snarl...
Never fear, Una, I don't intend to let death's wings flutter over this bout... This is a mere side-show and I reserve that for plot-critical moments!
Asherick Whiteplume |
'Sir' {Captain} Vlado Drafir steps forward and crouches over the body of Yacoub his breathing growing excited as if in expectation of something joyful...{Rasp~}, {Rasp~}, {Rasp~}...
Vlado touches the chest of the fallen warrior and there is a flash of silvery light and Vlado curses yanking his hand back as if hurt, "Bah, WORTHLESS DOG!!! He still lives!! {Rasp~}...Again no feast of suffering, for the Lord of the Pit!!! {RASP~}"
Asherick uses his Sacred Touch to auto stabilize the dying man.
Bluff - Take 10! 10 + 2 = 12
Standing, Vlado turns as if... annoyed and stalks over to the bookie to collect lady Thrune's winnings...
Megan Robertson |
Muttering but not daring to meet your eyes, the bookie pays up.
The Spider King surveys the scene impassively.
"Given time, Lady, I am sure we can find more... entertaining... combatants. But I trust that this has served to pass the time in a pleasant way. Would you care to dine with me this evening?"
Una Therlmagne |
Mindful of her companion's disguise spells, Una nods carefully.
"If such accomodations can be arranged swiftly, I believe I will. We must return to Cheliax before nightfall."
Or I could send Hytogg to purchase more potions of disguise.
"I must ask my attending priest if we might be allowed a brief respite from the normal duties of our sovereignty."
Asherick Whiteplume |
Hey Una... Cheliax is a LONG Ways away... like half continent! Just something to consider...
Una Therlmagne |
Mindful of her companion's disguise spells, Una nods carefully.
"If such accomodations can be arranged swiftly, I believe I will. We must return to Our Ship before nightfall."
Or I could send Hytogg to purchase more potions of disguise.
"I must ask my attending priest if we might be allowed a brief respite from the normal duties of our sovereignty."
Better now?
Megan Robertson |
"Yes, I think there are certain... possibilities, and you are clearly in a position to play your part. Meet me here at noon tomorrow and we can begin to put things in motion."
It's now getting dark. The Spider King directs his people to clear down the 'ring' and attend to Yacoub, before returning to his quarters and calling loudly for his cook.
What do you all want to do now?
OOC: Job interview tomorrow (Friday), not sure when I'll get online
Una Therlmagne |
As Lady Thrune,
"Why not allow the victor and his manager to dine with us, particularly if you have just concluded a business deal? It sounds like just the proper time to celebrate."
She lowers her voice so only Devargo can hear her.
"Or did you have other intentions?"
Megan Robertson |
The Spider King smiles.
"Not, my dear lady, unless such advances were to be... welcomed!"
He turns to the rest.
"Indeed if you do not mind mixing business and pleasure, you and your manager, Shakhan, are welcome to dine with us. Perhaps you would care to visit the Goldenhawk... or the House of Clouds if you prefer - to bathe and refresh yourself first. I'll have my man Endean take you, complementary of course."
What's everyone going to do?
Una Therlmagne |
I'm going to assume that we've used about half an hour's worth of our disguise potion, however, unless we need him around, I'd like to get Hytogg to go purchase further potions (or perhaps a wand if we have enough funds, even if it is not a fully charged wand)
With surprising grace, Una rises from the chair with a slight curtsy to Devargo. "That might be an interesting topic to pursue at another time. Perhaps on my next visit."
"By your grace, my servants and I shall adjourn to the Goldenhawk to refresh ourselves. But before we go, allow me to present this fine gift in appreciation for your hospitality."
Una holds forth the velvet-lined box, removing the lid and pulling forth the statuette of the succubi. She holds it carefully, rotating it to show its fine qualities (and ogle-worthy tidbits).
Megan Robertson |
The Spider King puts his head to one side as he examines your gift.
"I shall... treasure this, thank you." He seems genuinely pleased with it!
A tall thin fellow in a dark tunic with short-cropped hair leads you over to the Goldenhawk. This single-masted Chelish sailing ship has seen countless crude repairs — it's doubtful it's very seaworthy, but lashed as it is to the pier, it seems stable enough. Here you are greeted by a wall-eyed gnome, a rumpled-looking fellow with a patchy beard and crumpled hat, who introduces himself as Tuggins. He offers a choice of washbasins or full baths, whatever your pleasure might be... he even has soap!
I think you've used about an hour of disguise potion by now. If Hytogg wants to go for more, he can be back in about half-an-hour, plenty of time for the rest of you to refresh yourselves.
Shakhan |
Shakhan nods, satisfied with the progress. Looking on as his opponent gets dragged out he grins grimly, "Good. I'll freshen up over at the Cloud. You coming too, manager?" He's off only moments later, enjoying the squeeky-clean, round-the-world bathing option that the Cloud offers to discerning clientele.
Asherick Whiteplume |
{Sir} Vlado nods to Hytogg, "You may want to run your errands, priest...{Rasp~}, Ere her ladyship needs to make ready...{Rasp~} to take her leave."
Vlado taps the face of his visored helm as if pondering a tight schedule - hoping Hytogg gets the fact that the disguise potions need refreshing.
Someone remind me...did we get our evidence against the Chelish Ambassador?
Una Therlmagne |
Not yet, it will make for a pleasant dinner conversation. Devargo has been plied with wealth (and the promise of more), gifts, and perhaps, if his cards are played right a diplomatic alliance with the Chelish nobility. :P He should come up to snuff soon enough.
Hytogg |
Hmmm...Yes I suppose I do have that matter that must be attended to" "Hopefully the offering plate will begin to fill with coin instead of being drained"
Hytogg will leave to get more potions, but it's clear he believes this method of getting what they want is costing them more than it should. At this rate we will lose money on the mission, what with spending money on expendable resources, and giving away expensive gifts. He will make sure to get his portion of the treasure in gold from now on :-)
Una Therlmagne |
You can get scrolls of disguise if you want to instead, but then we risk someone overhearing the spells being cast. My potion lasts 2 hours, I got a potion cast at 2nd level. So I won't need one immediately. We can always sell back what we don't need in the future.
Asherick Whiteplume |
And to note, Ashe bet a total of 300gp ... but 200gp on the winner and 100 on the looser... net loss nothing. We loose the 100gp bet on the loser but get our 200gp back from our winning bet but also and additional 200gp for the win. Net loss Nothing. The 2nd level potion {Una's} cost 100gp, but Ashe's 1st level potion was only 50gp. Our pay was 1,000gp. We are only down 150gp [both paid by Ashe and Una from their own gold] +50gp for the replacement potion, total of only 50gp out of 1,000gp. We have not really spent much yet! Plus we were led to believe that finding a buyer for the Twin Succubi Statue would be difficult and hardly give us its true value...might as well use it to sweeten the deal with a man of... {ahem}...deep passions rarely filled?
Megan Robertson |
Seems about right...
So, as not to get too bogged down in details, about 35 minutes later you all reassemble on the Eel's End. The Spider King has had a table set up in his chamber, snowy white tablecloth, candles glinting off the silverware and all. The smell of roast meat fills the air, and the wine is already beginning to flow.
Hytogg, you were able to acquire more potions quite easily and rejoin the others.
Shakhan, did you want to avail yourself of a nice young bath-lady to rub your back?
Asherick Whiteplume |
With his 35 minutes Ashe will also go to the "House of Clouds" and ask to make use of an appropriate mask of a half-devil from their store of costume clothing so as not to disturb Lady Thrune's appetite while eating with someone so horribly scarred as he. I'm sure with the many 'exotic' requests from their patrons... they will have something appropriate. He'll drop 5 gold on the purchase, if needed, but he does not mention payment at first unless they seem obstinate for pay. The half-mask should allow him to eat and not reveal his complete cloth-wrapped face without his visored-helm getting in the way.
Shakhan |
Shakhan enters the Spider King's chamber just short of an hour later, looking quite pleased for a man who calls a grim brood the norm. In spite of what else must have happened in the Cloud, he nonetheless seems clean and washed. "Sorry I'm late. Some... parts are hard to wash." He sits down, a bit uneasy at the finery of the table. He nods to the lady, "I'm Shakhan. You've seen what I do."
Asherick Whiteplume |
Asherick accepts the mask but makes a quick retreat from the "House of Clouds", not comfortable in a Whore House; but confident none of the 'Ladies' will bother so obviously a disfigured and brooding man.
{Sir} Vlado, makes no comment, merely nods in acceptance of the pit fighter's presence, his 'breathy' wheezing not as prominent without his Iron Full Helm, but his face is wrapped in clean cloth ...almost mummy-like with a red painted mascarade ball half-mask depicting a devil's handsome horned visage covering his features. Only his less obscured lips show the puckered flesh of disfiguring grotesque burns. He does not look Shakhan in the eyes.
He seems... 'Ill, at ease...' reclining in... comfort, but makes no complaints or comments.
Risdin Arramack |
After seeming excited about leaving with Shakhan to the Cloud, Risdin parts ways once out of sight. He finds a quiet area overlooking the water, and spends some time taking in the air.
He keeps an eye on the cloud for the reemergence of his fighter. Once Shakhan is back on his way to the Eel, he quickly steps in behind him.
Inside, he is momentarily surprised by the silverware, only to quickly realize the Spider King had not specifically purchased these items. Fenced goods, more than likely.
Regardless, he sits down. Waiting for the others to become their loud selves, and knowing his lip is not as sly as he wishes in a place like this.
Megan Robertson |
A full-bodied red wine is served in ornate goblets, and a roast sucking pig is brought in to be carved.
The Spider King proves an entertaining host, keeping conversation light and everyone involved. Yet there is something slightly mechanical about it, as if he had taken lessons in how to host formal social events and is working through what he has learned.
Does anyone wish to bring up any specific topic of conversation or do anything apart from eat and drink?
Oh yes, despite what occured earlier, no spiders are now present.
Una Therlmagne |
As Lady Thrune... got it correct this time
"What do you think of us Chelish, King of Spiders? Are we not a strange lot?"
(Megan, let me know if you want me to roll Charisma checks with my conversation. I'm not good at diplomacy or information gathering, just copying what I've observed (which is the main way a fighter learns anyway))
Megan Robertson |
"There are many strange peoples in this world of ours, my Lady," replies the King of Spiders, "And it my pleasure and amusement to cater to their whims. But yes, I would say that of the more outlandish visitors I entertain here, the Chelish feature strongly."
Are you trying to accomplish anything? If so, a roll might be appropriate. Charisma if you are trying to be charming, or Gather Information if you want to find something out.
Asherick Whiteplume |
{Sir} Vlado, comments with some irritation, "There is a Cheliaxian ambassador here in Korvosa... {gasp~}, but he has not 'deigned' to reply... {gasp~} to any polite request for his time!"
Megan Robertson |
The Spider King tilts his head to one side.
"Ambassador Amprei? Oh, yes... a most interesting fellow... many a tale he would not like to have repeated... indeed he has paid well to ensure that certain letters... but, no matter. You wish to see him, you say? Perhaps I could help... rather than his gold, perhaps I ought to ask for his cooperation... More wine!"
Asherick Whiteplume |
{Sir} Vlado, replies, a sardonic smirk on his burned almost featureless lips, "Ask??? Heh!!! {gasp~} I am familiar with men such as this Amprei, Ambassador 'HA!' {gasp~} Politeness gains one nothing with his sort...{gasp~}, only his selfish ends matter to him! Coercion works best with his kind... {gasp~}! Do not trouble yourself, 'Lord Spider'...{gasp~}. I only made the attempts on behalf of Lady Thrune...{gasp~} while she was here in Korvosa seeking the courtesy of the Ambassador...{gasp~} to entertain the Lady on her brief visit to your fine city. There is no more time for...{gasp~} 'niceties', we leave on the morrow.
He pauses his lips forming a scarred hideously seared facsimile of a smile.
But rest assured... {gasp~}, ere our return to the capital... {Gasp~}, his superiors will hear of his rudeness to her ladyship! The name Thrune demands respect! {Gasp~} And your accommodating efforts, 'Lord Spider', {Gasp~} will not be forgotten or unappreciated..."
Una Therlmagne |
Lady Thrune takes on a cold demeanor.
"As Captain Vlado says, we do not have the time to meet him now. I am insulted enough that he refused to see me the first time. However, I am interested to know about these letters he wishes to keep hidden. I had hoped to return to the capital with a glowing report of your hospitality, and the amenities you offer here. I know a number of nobles who might be eager to participate in the pleasures that are your fare, King of Spiders... It would be... sad if I could not do so because you refused to share vital information about our own ambassador."

Una Therlmagne |
Still with a cool demeanor, Lady Thrune looks over the warrior barely containing his rage.
"The dinner table is no place for such violent displays, Shakhan. Bottle that up for your next victory."
She looks to Captain Vlado, as though questioning, and he gives her a cursory nod.
"I see no reason why we cannot share what we know about His Excellency. From what I hear at court, his time as an ambassador may be somewhat limited."
Megan Robertson |
Flippin' heck... you guys have got the die roller tamed!!!!
The Spider King rubs his chin, then grins wolfishly.
"Well... I think I may be able to help you... but what is it worth? Listen - I learned of a scandalous affair Ambassador Amprei was having with the wife of an important noble back in Cheliax. Apparently, the ambassador and this woman had been corresponding while Amprei was stationed here in Korvosa — naturally, when I heard these rumors, I paid the man a visit. I attempted to befriend the ambassador, giving him a gift of several vials of shiver and making a proposition to the man to open a line of trade with Cheliax. The ambassador refused and had me escorted from his home, the scoundrel, but I pickpocketed the man's housekey as I left, returning later that night to return the key and steal several of the ambassador's letters to his paramour. I've been selling the letters back to the ambassador at the rate of one every few weeks, taking great delight in the man's discomfort whenever he visits Eel's End to purchase one of them. One has to get one's pleasures where one can, after all? The fact that the ambassador hasn't gone to the guard and is attempting to keep the re-acquisition of the stolen letters as quiet as possible says plenty about how dangerous the contents would be to his career, don't you think?
"Now, there are a few of these letters remaining. What might they be worth to you, hey?"
Una Therlmagne |
Lady Thrune is dismayed.
"I had hoped you might be willing to turn them over in the name of friendship. I have already spent some amount aquiring this beautiful figurine for you."
She gestures to the figurine of the two succubi, placed at a position of honor on the table.
"Surely it, and my continued friendship and good will should be enough for your coffers? However, in the interest of friendship, I will offer another 300 gold pieces for the remaining letters. Consider that I do not carry the wealth of Cheliax with me; only what I need for necessary purchases. This figurine is of considerable value, however, and I do not think I have seen the like of it before in my lifetime. Similar ones, perhaps."
"Captain Vlado, perhaps you can explain our situation better than I. Your honor among the Hell Knights has never been questioned."
Someone with diplomacy step in here.
Lady Thrune looks over at Shakhan and Risdin.
"It seems they also are interested in the information you have, and I believe you were concluding a deal. Perhaps they have something else they can offer you."
Risdin Arramack |
Grinning, Risdin sits back in his chair and listens to the discourse. He flattens his grin when Una addresses him.
"Well, this is certainly something we are interested in, as you well know."
"So you know we want what you have, Spider King, but what do you want?"
"On the one hand we could follow through with the plan we proposed in our previous discussion. The monetary gain from that little endeavour would far outweigh what coin we could give you right now."
"...and with a quick feel of my purse, I'm not sure we could offer you as much as the Lady.
"So it really comes down to how desperately you need money, and how much your time is worth."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 2 = 16 Somebody (Shakhan?) aiding?
