I believe that is called self flagellation. I am not the most religious of men, but I think it is some Christian ritual of prostrating oneself before their God. Looks a bit painful, if you ask me. One would think that just kneeling and asking forgiveness would be a bit more pragmatic.....and less trouble. But who am I to question one's beliefs? I am just a man....well....mostly anyways. Paddy grins as the Lusty Fools pass the religious procession.
If I have to pay for my sins after I die, so be it.

Kiyu would have bought all three texts Flamel could have sold her by the way, just need to know the price.
Lookong to the pilgrims, Kiyu asks everyone in French, "What is going on there?"
-Posted with Wayfinder
The texts that Flamel has for sale are The Key of Solomon, an alchemical treatise in Latin worth 100 gp, a copy of The Odyssey in Greek worth 50 gp, and The Bagavatgita in Sanskrit for 75 gp....
In response to Kiyu's inquiry, the penitents look at her with shame and remorse on their faces.... Their apparent leader speaks for them:
We are wretched sinners seeking forgiveness for our sins! We seek to repent and atone before the day of judgement dawns! You should do the same, and save yourself from the fires of Hell!

Kiyu shrugs, "Sorry, I don't believe in such things. But your concern is appreciated."

Passing these pitiful penitents, the party ventures north on the road to Calais, a port city held by England on the French coast, one of the Cinque Ports that offer ferries across the Channel....
The sun descends on their journey as they trudge through fields of golden grain and copses of forest....
Rolling for random encounters, which occur on a 1 in d6 when traveling this particular road....1d6 ⇒ 3....The day passes without incident, and the party finds a roadside inn called La Maison Par Le Vignoble (The House by the Vinyard)....

The following day's journey....Random encounter check 1d6 ⇒ 4 is also uneventful, and as night falls, The Lusty Fools find themselves at a campsite that has evidently been used by many travelers in the past.... There is a supply of chopped firewood stacked by the fire pit, and even several skins filled with water for thirsty travelers....

Calais is an important port, called a jewel in the crown of England for its importance as a port between England and France, and a hub of trade. It has been fought over by the French, the Burgundians, and the English for centuries, but has been an English holding these past few hundred years, due mostly to the fact that France and Burgundy hate each other so much, they would rather see Calais belong to England....
| Gatehouse guard |
A stout stone wall encloses the city of Calais, with a fortified gatehouse on its south side....
A portcullis is lowered to bar entry into the port city, and a pair of strong wooden gates that have withstood countless sieges stand behind the portcullis....
From the crenelated ramparts of the gatehouse, a helmed guard calls out to you in English:
Hark! Who goes there! .... State your name and business in Calais!
| Hisao of the Yellow Reeds |
Hisao, far more spooked as the Lusty Fools begin to gain fame, keeps his brand new hat low over his head.

Once through the gatehouse, The Lusty Fools emerge into the streets of Calais....
Directly ahead, across the muddy road, sprawl two blocks of fine buildings divided by a broad avenue....
A gothic cathedral can be seen to the east, and the inner wall separating a strong fortress from the rest of the city looms over the rooftops to the west....
Vendors hawk their wares in a market gathered just inside the south gatehouse, and the cry of seagulls directs The Lusty Fools to the harbor....

Iommi-Tyr knows that the Romans called this port Caletum, and Julius Caesar mustered 800 to 1,000 ships, five legions, and some 8,000 horses at Calais due to its strategic position to attack Britannia....
Calais was improved by the Count of Flanders in 997 AD, and fortified by the Count of Boulogne in 1224....
England needing a foothold in France, King Edward III, following the Battle of Crècy, marched north and besieged Calais for 11 months during 1347 AD before finally taking the port city.... It has been an English stronghold in France ever since, and has come to be called "the brightest jewel in the English crown" for its importance for trade.....

Nacht looks to the dark-being who actively seemed to speak his language.. much like the Paddy-Being. It was somewhat comforting. The thought of the boat however struck him as odd. Boat? Boat.. Yes a boat was used to cross water to far off lands. But how did he know of a boat? He remembered only darkness.. nothing on boats. A slight flash overtakes his eyes as for a brief second he sees.. Himself? No they had skin wore gloves, A dagger imbedded in the neck of a female-being. The other hand clamped on her mouth. The image fades just as quickly. Nacht's eye narrow again.

Within, a motley crowd of patrons drinks ale and converses in the great common room, furnished with several long boards, a bar, and a great fireplace....
Finding seats at one of the long boards, the party is soon attended by a red-headed, freckled English wench bearing a flagon of ale and several mugs on a platter....

Iommi-Tyr Magnusson goes to the personal library of Rupert II here in Calais. Even though he has never met Rupert II, he's hoping that a connection can be made.
Rupert's mom, Blanche Lancaster, was my best friend's sister (Prince Harry). And Blanche's little sister, Philippa Lancaster, was named my pupil by Queen Margaret I and King Henry Bolingbroke. I used to play with Prince Harry, Blanche, Humphrey, Thomas Chaucer & the rest of them when they visited us in Norway -- or when I visited London.
Even though all of that was 30-40 years ago, I may be able to make a good connection with Rupert II, the German who never really did like his father, Louis III.
The rest of The Lusty Fools, if they are willing, can get me once passage is booked for England.
Iommi-Tyr Magnusson will continue to study the astrological charts, information about Conflagratious, the current goings-on in London and other pertinent information as it presents itself.
My absence from real gameplay should be over soon. My schedule is starting to become "manageable." Well, at least, .... There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
