Laya's cry fills Heward with hope. "Awgin, help Laya. I'll try to hold these two here. Calatin, if you can get away you'd best do so."

Heward tries his axe-blade against the stone man by the door.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 .. damage 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

The heavy blade furrows the elemental's arm.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (street performer) 2

Auriel hears Laya shouting but stays put. The snake is still on one staircase, and she assumes the invisible summoner is still hovering over the other one. Nothing she can do.

Delay

AoO
Flail:
to hit 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 damage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10

Cracks spider across the elemental from Awgin's mighty blow.

Downstairs, Taverson, gripping his sword tightly in both hands, brings the blade down at the electric snake.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Wisp gasps and hisses in pain as the sword cleaves deeply into its flesh. "You paysss for that!"

Back upstairs, Calatin fires off another frosty ray at Elemental 1.
Touch attack: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 1 - 4 = 16
Damage; 1d3 ⇒ 3
The tiny ray penetrates one of the fissures in its chest, which begins to crumble and crack further, dissolving into a rain of debris, which then vanishes in smoke. Frost heave, I guess?

ROUND 4

The snake delays, glaring at Taverson.

Up next: Awgin, Elemental 2, Veristan, Laya

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (street performer) 2

"Oh, hells, yes, Taverson!" Auriel cheers under her breath from the doorway, pumping her fist. If he can make the snake go poof, that will leave a staircase clear to get upstairs. continuing to Delay

Awgin continues to press the elemental.

Flail:
to hit 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 damage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 6 = 16

Awgin's flail careens harmlessly off the elemental. The rock creature swings its fist at the ranger again...

Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

...and Awgin makes a mighty leap, allowing the creature's fist to sail through the air beneath his feet.

The chanting outside the room finishes, and Wisp suddenly grows exponentially in size. He casts another spell.
Taverson Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 Laya hears Veristan curse something in Shoanti.

Up next: Laya, Heward, Auriel

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (street performer) 2

"Get the hells out of there, Taverson; you're going to get swallowed!" Auriel reverses course as she sees the snake enlarge. still Delaying :)

Female Halfling Bard (Archivist) 1

Is our quarry still invisible? That would seem to be the case because you didn't say otherwise, but I ask because, if Taverson had to make a Reflex save, that would seem like an attack on him. And if our quarry is using greater invisibility, we're all screwed. :)

Spellcraft to identify spell just cast: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Spellcraft to identify spell just cast: 1d20 + 7

Grumble, grumble, annoying, should have checked the spell description better, only unattended objects don't break invisibility, oh well...

As the man curses at the failure of his spell, he also materializes, clinging to the wall ten feet above. The man, bald and with orangish skin, wears a cook's uniform, white and crisp.

Female Halfling Bard (Archivist) 1

"That's more like it," Laya says. She calls up to him, "Welcome to the party!" and chucks a sling stone at the man.

Sling: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Confirm critical: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Damage: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 = 1 point of nonlethal

The bullet gets only a glancing blow across the bald man's temple.

"I could use some help out here!" she calls to the others. "He's visible!"

Laya wrote:

Actually, the stone doesn't even do that much, as it slows down so much just prior to hitting, that it has no force left by the time it does hit the man. Veristan doesn't even seem to have noticed the stone.

Up next: Heward, Auriel

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (street performer) 2

Hearing Laya's shout, Auriel steps into the doorway where she can see the western staircase. "Kael. I knew that other guy was just a garden-variety thief. Stafford! You got anyone with arrows or crossbows out there that you can spare from 'protecting your guests' from mosquitoes? You've got a flying barbarian thief in here trying to kill your ... Taverson." Acting after Laya: Move to AA 19; use extraordinary ability call for help :)

Heward watches the first elemental go down with relief. Hearing Laya's call he drives his halberd point into the elemental's chest and pivots around the creature. Then he dashes out of the library and along the balustrade.

Halberd 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 .. damage 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

trying to reach Q21 or so. The elemental might get an AoO as I pass.

Heward Wallas wrote:

The elemental would, and you would have to open the door as well, which would also provoke (though it probably doesn't have Combat Reflexes). Opening the door will be a move action, however, which he can't do this round, as he has to move more than 5 feet to access the door.

AoO: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
The elemental takes a swing at Heward as he goes by, but fails to connect.

Up next: Calatin, Wisp, Awgin

Auriel, I actually went and looked up the street performer archetype, looking for the "Call for Help" ability, thinking maybe it was an actual thing they got, before I realized your little joke!:)

I gotta hit eventually. Go after the elemental again.
Flail:
to hit 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 damage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15

Forgot the doors were closed. OK. Maybe I can hold the door for Awgin next round. Speaking of whom, Dax, are you including the modifiers for bigness in your attack rolls?

They cancel out. I get a +1 from str and -1 for being large

M Human Wizard (Divination School Specialist)/2

Guess I'd better try a frosty ray on Elemental #2...

Touch attack: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 1 - 4 = 8
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2

Calatin's frost ray goes slightly wide of its target.

ROUND 5

Wisp bites at Taverson, then slaps at him with his tail, trying to wrap it around the guard captain.

Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Tail slap: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25; damage: 2d6 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 4 + (2) = 14
Free grapple check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26; constriction damage: 2d6 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 4 + (3) = 14

Taverson cries out in pain as the snake wraps its coils around his body and sends currents of electricity through him. Somehow, he manages to tough it out and stay standing.

Awgin swings at the elemental, but Heward's maneuver throws off his balance, and he misses.

The elemental swings back at him. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27; damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 and the rocky fist slams into Awgin's sternum, bringing the enlarged man crashing to the floor.

Veristan pulls a crossbow out from under his cloak, takes aim at Laya, and fires.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Due to the odd angle, his aim is off and the bolts takes a chip out of the marble banister instead.

Up next: Laya, Heward, Auriel (delaying)

Veristan is no longer invisible. :)

The crunch, the slump. Heward recognizes the sound. "Laya, stall him out there."

He spins on his heel and sweeps his halberd toward the elemental's head.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 .. damage 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

The elemental ducks and the halberd rebounds off the wall.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (street performer) 2

"You want to at least consider sending someone for the real Guard?" Auriel snaps at Lord Stafford.
Auriel continues to delay.

Taverson brings his sword down at the eidolon.

Grappled attack: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 9 - 2 = 11
Being tangled by the snake, he is unable to connect blade to beast.

Up next: Calatin, Wisp, Elemental, Veristan, Laya

Various stabilization rolls as well.

M Human Wizard (Divination School Specialist)/2

Muttering something under his breath, Calatin launches another frost ray at that pesky elemental...

Touch attack: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 1 - 4 = 15
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2

Calatin's cantrip penetrates the earth elemental, widening a dangerous crack that runs down its right side.

ROUND 6

As the snake is about to crush the life out of Taverson, Veristan yells a single word in Shoanti, and the snake relaxes (though doesn't release the guard).

Shouting towards the library, Veristan says, "Your friends lie dead and dying out here. All I want is the enjoiner fragment. Bring it to me and those that still live shall continue to do so."

Unheeding the call for a cease fire, the elemental bends down over Awgin's unconscious form and begins searching his body. Heward can have an attack of opportunity against it.

Veristan reloads his crossbow and takes a dead and careful aim at Laya. But he does not pull the trigger (yet).

"Well that sounds eminently reasonable," Laya says. "Why didn't you just say so? We could have saved ourselves all this trouble. I have the enjoiner in my pack. Call off your thugs and I'll toss it to you."

Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14

"Yes, there is no point in your people dying to protect the thief and his stolen goods."

He calls Wisp off, who slowly releases Taverson.

Heward's attack of opportunity would resolve before all this chatter, however, if he wants to take it.

There's no if ...

Seeing his opponent stoop over, Heward swings the halberd up and delivers a ...

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 ...damage 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

... well-aimed blow that glances off the elemental's back with a scattering of stone chips.

The blow may glance off the elemental's back, but it also serves to widen the crack Calatin's cantrip just enhanced. The elemental looks up at Heward with stony surprise before it crumbles away, and then vanishes in dust and smoke.

Combat is temporarily suspended, but please try to post actions that take roughly six seconds at a time, so we can keep track of those stabilizing.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (street performer) 2

"Let's see if Taverson's willing to die to protect your property," Auriel murmurs at the doorway, although it's unlikely Lord Stafford can even hear her. From her tone, it's clear she's hoping the man isn't single-minded enough to throw his life away for Stafford's wallet.

Auriel will continue to watch what's going on. If a situation arises where it looks like a distraction will actually do some good instead of signing several people's death warrants, including her own, she stands ready to provide it.

Taverson, sword still tight in hand, slowly backs away from the eidolon, who in turn, watches the fighter like a cobra stalking prey. Taverson backs down the stairs far enough to reach Markiv. Keeping his eyes on the snake, he bends down to check the synthesist's vital signs. Auriel sees him slump a little before standing straight again.

The snake seems to grin extra wickedly.

Female Halfling Bard (Archivist) 1

Laya takes hold of her pack and backs towards the door to the library. "The snake backs off well out of the way," she says. "No, better yet, dismiss it entirely. And the elementals...?" She opens the library door to confirm the elementals are gone. "Good. Just the snake then."

"Not going to happen. My elementals are gone, are they? No matter, it takes but a moment to summon more...perhaps fire elementals this time? This is not a negotiation. You said you had it in your pack. Take it out and toss it up to me, or Wisp eats your pet guard, my fire elementals burn the library to ashes, and you get a crossbow bolt between your eyes."

Heward whispers, "Calatin, check Garidan. I'll check Awgin." He kneels beside the fallen half-orc and looks for damage. "And watch out for another stone man. There were three last time."

Female Halfling Bard (Archivist) 1

Laya rolls her eyes. "We made a deal. You agreed to call off your goons. You haven't called off the snake. When the snake is sufficiently far out of the way, I'll throw you the enjoiner and not before. Any other decision and you will stand before Pharasma today."

She glances furtively into the library to see what the others are doing, hoping that somebody will soon be in a position to rush Veristan the moment she throws the bag at him.

Heward and Calatin can make Heal checks to help stablize the fallen. The DC is 15.

How far did you open the door? Is everyone talking nice and loud so we in the library can hear?

I rolled a heal check in last post but it dropped out. It was a 9.
Heward searches Awgin for a wound, but there's no bleeding to staunch. His guts must be paste. I can't do anything for him.

Veristan's eyes narrow as he looks down at Laya. "Show me that you actually have the enjoiner first, and I will send my serpent into the kitchens where he can no longer threaten you so."

Laya could only have opened the door a small crack, enough to see the elementals are gone. I don't know about Laya, but Veristan is certainly talking loudly enough for Heward and Calatin to hear.

Nazard wrote:

Laya's intention was to open the door all the way if she could. Of course, if there was something blocking it, then it would only be open as far as she could get it. She's definitely talking loud enough for everyone to hear. That's the whole point! She's trying to delay Veristan a bit for the others to do something. :)

The issue is the table in the way of the door. It's probably as high as Laya is tall. She should be able to go on tiptoe to reach over it and give the door a push.

Female Halfling Bard (Archivist) 1
Nazard wrote:

Ah, right. I forgot about the table. Blast. That makes things awkward.

"Surely you're capable of a simple detect magic spell," Laya goads the man. "Use that to confirm I have it. I'm not likely to have something else with the same kind of aura, am I?" She hisses under her breath at the door, "Somebody do something. I can't delay him forever."

While she doesn't have the enjoiner in her pack, she does have scrolls in it. It will take him at least two rounds with a detect magic to be sure there's no enjoiner.

Heward glances over at the prone Shoanti. "Awgin's in bad shape, but I can't find any bleeding. I can't help him. How's Hawkdancer?"

Can we get the stabilization rolls? I don't want to leave them bleeding out. Heward's untrained in heal though. He's unlikely to hit the DC to aid them.

Rolls to stabilize

Stabilize 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 DC 18
Stabilize 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 DC 19
Stabilize 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 DC 20
Stabilize 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 DC 21
Stabilize 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 DC 22
Stabilize 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 DC 23

So I have 6 rounds until death. Or is that 5?

M Human Wizard (Divination School Specialist)/2

"All right...". Calatin moves to Garidan to see what state he's in.

"I rarely look at live ones," he mutters.

Heal check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10... and it shows :)

That's a +2 to Heward's first check, though. You'd probably both be better off working together on one person at a time.

"We need Laya in here," Heward mutters. He stands, steps to the door, and opens it. "Laya! Garidan and Awgin need you."

Aid another would be good strategy, but Laya's a sure bet.

Male Human (Shoanti) Witch 2

Stabilization checks...

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

... if none of them work, then he's toast! :)
