Lost Mines of Phandelver 5E D&D (Inactive)

Game Master Aneirin Rhodri

The town of Phandalin was once a prosperous town for prospectors and some farmers thanks to the now lost mines of Wave Echo Cave. But as time passed the mine was lost to history. But now things are afoot in the small town as the trail is being under threat by monsters and the Rockseeker brothers have disappeared! Will the PCs be able to assist the town, or will they become nothing but a footnote in the annals of the Forgotten Realms?

Tie Up the Goblin Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 Has she ever seen a rope before? This commentator isn't sure...

Nariella tries to tie the goblin to a nearby tree. However, she seems a litte lost. Their heads are so big...but their bodies are so small. How do I...? She loosely wraps the rope around once and then places a lose end on his shoulder and tucks it behind him, like it's going to do something.

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

Trying not to seem rude, Arrius clears his throat and says, "Here, maybe I can help make it extra secure..."

DEX: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

"Ah right, yes, yes. That's how it goes...now I remember..." Nariella mutters as watches Arrius tie the goblin.

Insight DC13:

Save Face Roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
She is trying to save face, but she had no idea what she was doing and is now rather embarrassed.

Nariella over enthusiastically remarks, "Well, I'm ready to move on. Is everyone else ready to move on?" Of course they are ready you clod. They were waiting on you and that rope... "Yes? Let's...er...go...then..."

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

Insight: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

"Great! Shall we?"

As Nariella (or Arrius rather) tie little Yetik, the party stares into the cave.

Stepping in slowly, the feral yaps grow louder as the light simultaneously grows dimmer. About 30 or so feet in, the barks and growls are able to be pinpointed from a side-cavern to the party's right (east) where three large wolves are found the be chained to the floor straining to leap forward.

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

"I recommend acting while they're still chained. Any objections?"

M Human Cleric 1

"I object but I understand, they must not be allowed to harm us".

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

"I have no objections." Nariella replies, matter of factly. "However, if you are uncomfortable with causing undue harm, perhaps we can aim to merely knock them out?"

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

"Yeah, I feel bad about it, but it's necessary for the moment. I like Nariella's idea; let's just KO the poor things so they're not a threat, and move on."

If the GM has no objections...
Crossbow vs chained wolf: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11, Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

Can we not simply by=pass the wolves, or are they blocking further forward exploration?

Peren is not thrilled with the idea of slaughtering the animals while they are chained, and looks for another way to bypass them altogether.

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

We could probably walk past them, but I'm worried about a goblin later freeing them to sic them on us at an inopportune moment.

M Human Cleric 1

"Agreed lets knock them out and free them later.

Should we roll attacks and assume all damage is non-lethal?

The path forks, the wolves are in a small cavern to you guy's east, but the tunnel carries on further north.

As you all stand there deliberating, though...

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

The wolves seem to be straining at their leashes just as Arrius's bolt catches on it's foreleg, a snarled and hungry look on their faces.

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

"They're about to break free! Hurry, knock them out!"

Melee Mace 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Damage 1d6 ⇒ 3

Looking to do subdual/non-lethal damage.

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

Not wanting to get to close, Nariella fires at the wolves with her shortbow. Non-Lethal

Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Shortbow Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Arrius lets fly another bolt, catching one of the wolves across a flank, dropping it to the floor from pain. As Torbin moves up, he swings his mace in a wide arc at the still standing one, catching it hard on the jaw. However his swiftness to close throws Nariella's aim off, her arrow instead flying high over the wolves heads.

The wolf before Torbin, now with fresh meat in reach, attempts to bite the cleric.

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

But Torbin dodges it!

Would Peren like to do anything?

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

Peren, reluctantly moves forward and strikes at one of the wolves with his swords.

If one is still standing.

Taking advantage of the fact the wolf is distracted by Torbin and Peren, Nariella moves in and tries to knock the wolf out.

Did we get 'em?

Grr... Paizo ate my post from last night.

As Peren and Nariella close, steel dances in their hands and in a moments time the other wolf is on the ground, matted fur now soaked in blood.

With that, the wolves are down.

With the lack of yelps, barks and howls, the cave quiets itself, the sound of the small stream coursing through it from the north the only noise heard.

The small cave you all are in is generally round, a small chimney like feature along the eastern wall. It is dimly lit from the light from outside, no torches or anything in it to be seen.

M Human Cleric 1

Torbin will the use Spare the Dying on all of the wolves, bringing them to unconsciousness as he does not wish to see them killed senselessly.

Torbin whispers to his comrades, "I shall take up the rear as I can see little in this place and a torch shall give us away. I shall follow your lead".

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

"Yes. Lets move forward, cautiously." Nariella whispers back, taking a scouting position near the front.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Nariella will try to stay within eye reach of the party, but far enough away from Torbin that if he needs to light up a torch later on, she isn't immediately given away.

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

I recommend a 30ft gap between Nariella and the rest of us. Sound good, everyone?

M Human Cleric 1

OK for me.

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

Peren will stay 30' from Nariella as the next in line.

Spoiler:
1d20 ⇒ 15

As Nariella slinks forward, the sound of the babbling creek from the cave echoes softly off the walls. Her elf eyes can see that further along the cave and the stream begin edging more to the north-east. To the west just before the cavern and stream's direction change, an opening in the cave wall appears, with a some steep incline leading upwards towards another cavern.

Nariella, please give me a Wisdom (Perception) check as you inch forward.

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Nariella:
As you sneak forward, a slight rustling noise catches your attention. From further up ahead, you see over the creek a small bridge. That in and of itself is a tad odd, but you also spot a small humanoid dashing across it, heading more-or-less eastward.

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

Is eastward towards us or away from us?

If towards us:
Nariella falls back thirty feet, towards the party. Placing her hand on her rapier and looking for the creature, she mutters. "Something is coming..."

If away from us:
Nariella turns to the party and remarks, "I think one of them saw me. He may be going to get help....Shall we pursue or try to hide?"

M Human Cleric 1

"Let's pursue, we want them on their heels!"

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

"Indeed. Lets us take this fight to them! Shall I lead on?", the elven warrior whispers to the group.

It's google images, but this should help a little. The bridge crosses the river from the northwest to the south east, and the humanoid ran southeast.

Looks like two, maybe three are up for advancing? Okay!

As the party moves up towards the bridge, do you attempt to climb the steep, slightly slick walls and up unto the bridge? Or do you follow the course of the creek?

M Human Cleric 1

"It may be prudent to follow the course of the creek, with poor visibility a fall could be problematic".

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

Nariella replies, "If you are concerned about visibility we can follow the creek, since I don't think its wise to split up right now."

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

"I agree. I can see perfectly fine and am willing to help those of you who cannot, or Nariella and I can move ahead of the group and you may lite a torch to assist in your vision. Either way, we must hurry before the entire warren is raised against us."

M Human Cleric 1

"Very well, lead on i shall trust in your eyesight my friends. We should wait until the last moments to ignite a light, it will startle them and give us a momentary advantage we may need".

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

"Agreed, let's follow the creek."

As the party beguns to move up the same route as the creek, the water in the creek begins to rise! Quickly overflowing it's banks, it threatens to swell even more.

I'll need Dexterity (Acrobatics) or Strength (Athletics) as a rush of water cones flowing forth!

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

"What the—?!"

12, 18, 18, 19? ~One of these things is not like the others...~

As the rusof cool water flows out from up ahead, Arrius is unable to maintain his balance as the swift current overtakes. Like a flash, he's swept along and down the stream, finding himself flushed out of the cave and back out into daylight.

The trip was not pleasant, the rocks and ground not acting as a soft bed. Arrius takes: 1d6 ⇒ 4 points of bludgeoning damage before finding himself deposited out near Yetik. Seeing the Half-Elf all washed up, it starts rolling with laughter.

Half-elf Warlock 1 (Archfey) | AC 14 | HP 8/10 | S-1/D+3/C+2/I+2/W+2/C+4 | Perc +0 | Spell Slots: 0/1

Oh yeah? Well, that river totally takes 5 cold damage from my armor of agathys spell! :/

Arrius glares at the goblin as he picks himself up, then rushes back into the cave to where he last saw his companions.

The river takes damage from the Armor of Agathys, but swiftly resumes it's former banks. As Arrius returns, the chattering of voices in the caves ahead can be heard. It's all in Goblin, however.

Torbin, you can make a Wisdom (Perception) check to see if you overhear what is being said.

M Human Cleric 1

Perception 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Female Elf Rogue 1 | AC 14 | HP 9/9 | Init +3 | Str -1; Dex +5; Con +1; Int +4; Wis +0; Cha +2 | Perception +2, Insight +2

"Are you alright?", Nariella whispers to Arrius when he returns, as she draws her weapon and prepares for the goblins.
