Nature, to see if I can identify it: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 I'm assuming Nature. I also have Dungeoneering, if that makes a difference.
As he tries to figure out what the creature might be, he halts, and waves the others forward. Once everyone is together, he points at the creature.
"That is too big to be a bird. It could be a problem for us."[/b]

Because of the type of creature, it would actually fall under Know (arcana). That being said, I'm willing to substitute it for a second Perception check to identify it generally.

"That appears to be a manticore. And it seems to be hunting. At least we know we are headed in the right direction. I hope Shi'Vatha is okay."
What's the terrain like here? Foothills... but are there trees or cover to use at all, or are we basically walking out in the open?

You have about 100 acres of open farmland, fallow from disuse, but essentially open ground. You can see Shi'Vatha out in the field, although you can't tell if he's seen the manticore. Beyond that, it appears to be some light trees and smallish (under 100') hills off in the direction of the sighting.

Shi'Vatha |

Shi'Vatha's in the field? I thought he was at the farmhouse? Did he miss the perception roll on the mandy core?

You did miss the mandy core, I'm afraid. She decided not to wait on your late butt to show up. :) There is a manticore flying around, well outside your range (a couple of miles away, at least), that you can look at though.

Shi'Vatha |

Well, no one explained he had it wrong. :) He's looking around for a flying thing called a Mandy Core. :) Does he think the big flying thing is a Mandy Core as described by the man?

Shi'Vatha |

Shi'Vatha will leave a note on the door, telling people he spotted a Mandy Core, and is going to do his best to follow it back to it's lair.
Then he'll move as fast as he can while stealthing, getting close enough to the creature he can see it, but still stay stealth'd (shouldn't be hard, he's small and has experience avoiding sentries).

"I will need some time to prepare if it looks like we will be moving against the creature sooner rather than later."

Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24 Plus any bonuses for cover

Selene sighs at the note before moving off and preparing an area for her ritual, at which point she seems to begin gathering shadows about herself.

You can see that the manticore is flying towards either a flat landing or a cave (the angle gives you no hint either way) that is several hundred feet up a rough terrain hill. You are about a mile away from the foot of this hill at the moment.

Shi'Vatha |

Now that he knows where it lairs, Shi'Vatha will return to the man's farm to wait for the others.

Lord Manticore |

OK just making sure.
Shi'Vatha is able to meet back up with you and he lets you know what he found. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the base of the hill that the manticore landed on (in?). THe sun has completely set and the quarter moon provides little illumination. The terrain up the hill is rocky, with no discernible path up it. It is climbable, from what you can tell (at least up a couple of hundred feet), but you can not tell if it will be that easy all the way to the landing that Shi'Vatha saw the manticore fly to.
OK guys, let me know what your plans are and we'll proceed from there. Feel free to ask questions; I can provide at least a few answers.

Shi'Vatha |

Shi'Vatha looks up the hill. "If you like, I can attempt to scout out an easier path to follow. We should find a good hiding spot to hide everyone first though." He speaks in a hushed whisper.
Sory. Been up 19 hours now, wife had reconstructive surgery today on her foot. And I'm in pain, threw my back out lifting her up to get her settled at home.

Glornug |

"I agree. We should find a spot to lay low until we know how to best approach the manticore. I am happy to help find a path, if needed. I am a decent climber. If we do not find an easier path, I can climb up and drop a rope behind me to help others." Glornug murmurs, staring up at the challenging hill.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you and your wife are okay. Go get some rest, we'll be here when you wake up.

Shi'Vatha |

Shi'Vatha nods. "Ok, you find a camp, and get them settled. We'll both look for ways up to double our chances, and then meet back up with the group in a couple of hours?" He then starts moving up the hill, looking for a relatively easy path. If he finds one, he'll blaze it by marking things, arrows in the dirt, things like that.
She's doing better. Doctor was very smug about the surgery, said he did a very good job. :)

OK I'd like to see either a Survival or a Perception check from each of you, including those who set up a camp (you never know...). -5 for darkness (even if you have darkvision, it is only black and white, with no color). It will be harder to spot a viable trail without having been here before.

Shi'Vatha |

Perception: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (14) + 13 - 5 = 22

Lord Manticore |

OK, between Shi'Vatha's Perception and Felicity's survival (as aid another in this case), you can find a path that will allow for full movement. It will likely get you at least halfway up the hill after at the cost of about an hour's time. You'll need to reroll to find another viable path.

Shi'Vatha |

Shi'Vatha will wait for everyone to get settled, then go searching for another path on up.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (13) + 13 - 5 = 21

Shi'Vatha |

Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34 I win! :)
