Living in the Shadows

Game Master Dementia Walker

In recent days both the Thieves and Assassins guild have collapsed due to infighting, rivalry, and meddling from the city's government. However rather then having a calming effect on the crime in the city it has done quite the opposite and the city is now in chaos with many small gangs fighting and causing trouble.

Okay my character is done.

Okay. Interested. I'm thinking a human rogue (burglar)/commoner. I'm going to do something new. For some categories in my character's background and creation, I'll roll from the Ultimate Campaign's background generator tables.

Generated:
- Lived in a city. City or Metropolis: If you’re a human, you gain access to the Civilized social trait and the Vagabond Child regional trait.
- Both parents are dead. You gain access to the Orphaned social trait.
Human Siblings: 1d100 ⇒ 47 1d2 siblings and 1d2 half-siblings (roll d% to determine each one’s race; 01–50: half-elf, 51–100: half-orc). You gain access to the Kin Guardian combat trait.
# of Siblings: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Relative Age of Sibling: 1d100 ⇒ 48 Sibling is older.
# of Half Siblings: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Race of Half Sibling: 1d100 ⇒ 42 Half-Elf.
Relative Age of Half Sibling: 1d96 ⇒ 80 Younger.
- Circumstance of Birth: Lower-class birth. You were born among peasants or slum denizens. You grew up working the land around a village or manor, practicing a rudimentary trade, or begging in a settlement. You gain access to the Poverty-Stricken social trait. Roll 2d20 on Table 1–26: Parents’ Profession to determine your parents’ occupation, instead of rolling d%.
Father's Profession: 2d20 ⇒ (18, 17) = 35 Sailor: You gain access to the Worldly social trait.
Mother's Profession: 2d20 ⇒ (15, 6) = 21 Serf/Peasant: You gain access to the Poverty-Stricken social trait.
- Mentorship/Patronage: A mentor or patron took an interest in your development and volunteered to train or sponsor you. This creature’s motives might not be entirely clear, but without its influence you would not be who you are. You gain access to the Mentored social trait.
- The Trained: Your early talent for feats of agility and acrobatics garnered you an experienced
mentor. Impressed by your natural ability, this mentor taught you how to fight, dodge, and throw. He may have been a master thief, circus performer, fencing master, or swashbuckling pirate. You gain access to the Mentored social trait.
- Conflict: Confrontational with older brother due to different ideals and lifestyles. Record of theft from merchants and tradesman. Reason: Family and money.
Romantic Relationships: 1d20 ⇒ 11 Current Lover: You are currently involved in a romantic relationship. You gain access to the True Love story feat.

So with that, let's see what I can come up with. I'll go through it tomorrow.

I'm interested but I am slightly confused the players would become dms for a short time?

Nothing against the idea and it sounds like an interesting game but would I still be able to join if I didn't want to DM and just wanted to play?

I don't want you guys to DM. I would just be making the entire campaign off the goals that the characters I choose have.

Ok, I will be closing this to submissions tomorrow when I get off work and make my selections then, good luck to everyone.

Would you prefer a full character sheet be set up with crunch or are the goals and character roles enough for now?

So, here's Victor Manas. His goals:

1) Amass a large amount of wealth through theft
2) Create and lead a guild of thieves and spread its influence throughout the world
3) Marry his lover, Marigold DuLoc, reunite with his half-sister, Koyuki, and have one last battle with his brother, Samuel
(Yeah, quite a few High level goals. Still helps wrap things up in his backstory)

BACKSTORY

======
Victor was born to two low class citizens in the slums of a major and expansive city. His father was a sailor. His mother had no skills that could be used for employment and resorted to begging. For the most part, Victor was looked after by his older brother by 2 years, Samuel. When Victor was four, his father left on a merchant ship that was shipping several important and valuable exports. If the voyage was successful, then the Manas family wouldn’t have to worry about money for several years. However, the ship never came back. Whether Victor’s father completely left his family or died was never revealed. Meanwhile, Victor’s mother dug herself into a worse hole. She couldn’t pay off an elf her debt to him, so she payed it with her body. The result was her becoming pregnant and giving birth to a half-elf daughter, Koyuki. When Victor was five, she passed away, leaving the three children on their own.

For years, the Manas children struggled to survive and make a living. Samuel, having enough of their life, decides to enroll in the City Guard. For years, he trained while Victor looked after Koyuki, developing a close relationship with his half-sister. Victor began stealing things like food and coins from random people. When he was eight, he stole from the wrong person. The man, Dolin, was a retired master burglar. Entertained by the boy’s skills, he decided to take him on as an apprentice. As the years went by, Victor learned more and more and stole bigger and more expensive items.

Eventually, his teacher thought that Victor was ready for his final test. When Victor turned fourteen, they both broke into the Guard’s barracks and planned on stealing some high end documents. Unfortunately, they were both caught by a small squad, with Samuel as one of the of the guards. Dolin helped his apprentice escape, getting captured in the process. The next day, Victor watched from the shadows as Dolin was hung from the gallows.

Victor went to meet with Koyuki. But when he arrived, he found Samuel waiting for him as well. The two argued, with Samuel saying that he has to arrest Victor for his crimes and is disappointed in him; while Victor claimed that Samuel doesn’t care about him and Koyuki since he spent all of his time with the Guard. The two eventually fought, both of them taking serious wounds. When Victor had the opportunity to leave, he asked Koyuki to come with him. She looked between the two brothers before moving closer to Samuel, saying that Victor’s different from the boy who took care of her. With anger overwhelming, the burglar decided to escape from town, with Samuel shouting that he would hunt him down.

A year later, Victor came into a very mercantile port city. He began to steal things again. Eventually, he broke into the mansion of a very powerful and wealthy merchant lord by the name of Boris DuLoc. Unfortunately, he was captured when he tried to steal from the daughter’s room and was sentenced to be imprisoned for three years. The daughter, Marigold, visited him and demanded to know why he broke into her house. Victor refused to answer. A stubborn girl, Marigold visited everyday to try and get the answer out of him. As the year went by, the two got to know each other better and struck up a secret friendship. Eventually, it blossomed into a deep romance. However, they kept it a secret from everyone.

While in prison, Victor heard that he would would be transferred to the custody of his brother. Marigold helped smuggle him out of the city with his gear. Victor swore to her that he would come back for her, once he has greater power, wealth, and a guild.

======

PERSONALITY

======

Victor is very grim and serious. He’s always looking to steal something. When his brother’s mentioned, a great fury envelopes him. He does provide a dark and grim sense of humor. As for teammates, he doesn’t really care, as long as they don’t get in his way.

It's important to note that I'm with Pathfinder Zoey, when looking for a campaign. :)

Alright, Submissions are closed, I will announce who I have chosen in about a few hours. Apologies for being rather quiet for questions that were asked I wanted to see what characters you guys wanted to play without a lot of input from me and I really enjoyed reading all of your character ideas.

Here are my selections

Zayne Iwatani- Half-elf Rogue
Darksmokepuncher- Weylyn Dell
Tieflingwizard- Victor Manas

I feel it will be fun watching you all vie for control of a thieves guild that you build up from nothing :)

Thank you again everyone for your ideas.

Character building(Just throwing this up again with a bit more explanation)

Level: 1
Alignments: Any non-evil.
Stats: 25 pt. buy
Sources: Any Paizo
Gold: Standard

I am going to throw a curve ball here, as well as your first normal level, pick up one NPC level (Adept, Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert, Warrior) this will be your "zero level" it will represent what you were before you became an 'adventurer' as well as give you some extra spells if you are a caster and some extra HP otherwise as well as some extra skill points. Added: Essentially you will be a second level character with one level of NPC class and one level of regular class, I will just consider you level one for all intents and purposes

Also I am planning on using some ideas from Weapons of Legacy and Mythic Adventures.

Feel free to ask questions for further details. Make sure and keep your goals in your Backstory portion of your character page.

Get the characters fully crunched and I will add a gameplay and discussion section

So, are story feats okay? Because True Love is a story feat from Ultimate Campaign. Also, I don't own Weapons of Legacy.

Otherwise, other than creating an alias, Victor should be all set.

Does this thieves guild also happen to have contract killers cause that's a big part of his story. And I know it says any paizo but can I use two PrC's from dnd 3.5, Invisible Blade and Master Thrower. I am going for a master dagger thrower and they would help significantly.

It doesn't matter if you own weapons of legacy, I will be stealing what I want from it and using it to make your weapons awesome so you don't need to keep finding better and better magic ones.

I don't have a problem with True Love as a trait

Yes the thieves guild can also be an assassins guild

I would rather that you used only pathfinder material if possible

So, we'll get awesome special weapons? Cool!

So, True Story as a feat is okay? Or are you asking to change it to a trait?

This is Zayne's character. All I have is the backstory and description so far. I always wanted to use those classes since they mesh so well together but I guess I can use the knife master archetype. Check out the backstory and tell me what you think. I'll start the crunch tomorrow. Getting late here.

@ tieflingwizard I meant feat, I don't know why I typed trait.

I enjoy his background and look forward to his crunch, however.

In recent days in the major city that you all live, there has been a major battle in the shadows between the existing thieves and assassins guilds due to infringing on each others work. It was egged on by the less corrupt government officials in secret in hopes that they would destroy themselves and leave the city without either criminal element. It just so happens that it worked. However the people that caused it never stopped to think about how perhaps the guilds actually reigned in more of the common house break ins and muggings in favor of the more lucrative jobs and to make the people feel falsely safe. Now there is a power vacuum and many small 'guilds' that are running amok.

You could all have known of each other previously or I could work a way for you all to meet using that as the skeleton of our setting.

Four questions:

Traits?

Does Standard gold mean average?

And can I have THIS? Its third party but would lessen the number of feats I need to make this build work.

Max health for the npc and class levels?

Tieflingwizard here. Again, besides the questions Tobius brought up, Victor should be done.

EDIT: After looking up my traits, I noticed I had two social traits. So I swapped out Charming for Vagabond Child.

Two traits and then a one for one trade for drawbacks. If you don't role play the drawbacks that you take I will remove them from your character and you will loose any associated traits. Rules apply for only one trait in each area, good catch tieflingwizard, I had not noticed.

Yes average gold for a level one character

Yes max heath for both levels

I would prefer only using paizo material.

I think I have everything ready. I forewent the usually adventuring gear, i.e. backpack, bedroll, blanket, trail rations, since I figure we are starting and probably staying in a city where I can find a room to stay and food easily enough.

Switched the other combat feat I had out for a racial one.

Any word from darksmokepuncher?

Nope, but if he does not show up I will just use the two of you

Just sent him a pm.

Weylyn here. Sorry it's been a crazy week. Stat block will be up shortly. Thanks a lot for the selection. :)

EDIT: When you say "standard gold", do you mean for a level one character of our PC class, or for a level 2 character?

EDIT: EDIT: Nevermind. I saw that you already answered :)

All set (I think). Crunch is in the profile :)

Three different archetypes and three different stories. I like it.

Cool, I have read through everyone's characters. I didn't check for errors or anything just wanted to get an Idea of what each could do.

Everything looks to be in order with zero levels. I will get this started later today. Tomorrow at latest.

That was my post ^

Ready to go! Also, I'm keeping the same gear because I imagine has only recently gotten to the city.

Also....

I like this idea. Though, if we set it up that we knew each other in the past, that's fine.

I agree.

I think Weylyn will have been in town for almost a year. He has a quiet spot where three rooves come together to form a serviceable wind break, and it keeps out most of the rain. He has a recess in a loose shingle to store things he's not carrying: it's rare, but sometimes necessary.

He is very protective of the spot and takes care not to be seen coming and going, but he hates it. What he really wants is a small room somewhere with a warm fire.

I have no problem knowing either of you, either in passing our enve fairly well, but I don't think we would claim friendship yet. I do think we'd have something of an understanding about turf, and may even work together on lucrative jobs.

What do you all think?

Not a bad idea, Weylyn. I don't have a problem with it.

I actually see all three of us being on different sides of this battle. Sure we might know each other in a since but probably not in a friendly way. I am on the side of the assassin's and have probably killed a number of the thieves' guild lower level thugs. Maybe even people Victor knew. Weylyn is probably someone caught in the crossfire as a neutral party.

The whole reason Tobias is working for the guild is in the hope that he may one day find out who put in the hit on his mother. Usually such records are kept locked away but the battle between the assassin and thieves guild means the records are lost or gone. Now he has to track them down. That means a lot of money and a lot of connections. Tobias is really not happy with the situation but he may have to work with those he once hunted to get what he wants. Its going to be hard since they most likely want to see him dead but he has little choice.

For reference, Tobias has never killed someone that probably didn't deserve it. All kinds of contracts against all kinds of people are taken but each assassin gets to choose their target.

Interesting idea Tobias. How would you and Victor reconcile working together for the campaign with such bad blood between you though? I'm not saying don't do it, I actually like it, but that question needs answering to have a cohesive party :)

You are right though, Weylyn is certainly a neutral party.

Extenuating circumstances could bring us together, like the city cracking down on the left overs, but it also depends on how Victor sees the situation. Tobias is smart enough to realize there was manipulation so he holds no real animosity towards the thieves.

Alright gameplay thread is open with a very basic synopses of what is going on in the city of Freeport. Tell me where your characters are and what you are currently up to, you can literally do anything you want. Try to get a job as a guard so that you can see the layout of a place to rob it or whatever. I am more then willing to play what you guys do separately at first until we get a way for you all to meet up. Feel free to write in spoilers directed at me.

Sorry it took so long to respond. So let's get to this:

Sounds good. I'm on board with Victor and Tobias as enemies (even minor).

I'm good on a tense partnership (full of sniping at each other, mistrust, arguing, and vague threats ;)) It may take some time to get Victor on board with working with a team of a stranger and an enemy. Though, the fact that the corrupt government had a hand might help smooth things over.

Random topic: I imagine Samuel starting out as a warrior, then a shield and sword fighter, then (while pursing Victor) gaining some levels in ranger (though what archetype (if any) is up in the air).
