Kenji with his Quarterstaff in hand steps up to help surround the remaining spider next to the one he killed. Fighting Defensively, AC.16 he attacks with his Quarterstaff.
Infuriated that such a small creature could so long evade death, Lilley snaps at it again but badly mistimes a lunge, the force of which would no doubt have torn the arachnid apart. "Bloedige jou byl, en die dood van die verdoemdes ongedierte!" she growls at Stirgen.
Orc:
"Bloody your axe, and kill the damned vermin!" It is noteable that while she has slight speech impediment in Taldane, Lilley's diction in Orcish is flawless. It is obviously a language designed to flow around protruding tusks.
Bite attack on spider in AU 23 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Hands slicking with sweat at the continued verbal assault from the half-orc that scares Stirgen now that she's perfectly happy chowing down on spider meat... the Inquisitor takes a few moments to measure out the distance with his oversized ground-gouging axe and swings with more hope than gusto...
Once again, Stirgen's axe clings noisily against the stone floor. This time, however, it passes through the body of his intended target, cleaving it clean in half.
You each earn another 100XP for dispatching the spiders. Again, quickly.
You move forward warily, checking the alcoves for any treasures or enemies. But there are neither. As you approach the end of the narrow hallway, you again are greeted by double doors. This time, however, the doors open with a push. You emerge from the hallway into a much larger room.
The ceiling of this cavernous chamber vaults to a height of sixty feet, forming an architectural wonder unsupported by any visible columns or buttresses. You enter on a wide stone bridge with an elaborately carved railing. It arches over the chamber from north to south, joining two sets of massive bronze doors at either end. The central portion of the chamber, 40' below the bridge, contains an inlaid spiral symbol and is recessed into the floor, with eight staircases leading up to a wide ledge that encircles the room. On this ledge stand bronze doors to the east and west. Eight larger-than-life statues stand upon the ledge as well, evenly spaced around the room’s circumference—seven carved from white stone, and the eighth carved from black stone.
Stirgen smiles widely as he finally hits something, before bringing his enthusiasm somewhat into order and turning to Lilley to give a wink. He then idly wipes the ichor of his blade onto the spider's corpse.
Entering the chamber Stirgen looks about wide eyed and thoughtul...
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
...but without any targeted insights to add to the discussion. Musing out loud "We are watched as we promenade... by seven pure and one who stands apart"
Lilley catches Stirgen's wink with a flash of approval in her eyes after the half-orc has cleaved the spider in twain; then she looks down at the crushed vermin with its spilt viscera and she seems suddenly to realize how close she came to ripping the thing open with her teeth. Her already-green skin gains a sickly pallor as she turns away and leans weakly against the wall, her face pillowed in her arm, while the others search the alcove. When they are ready to move on and Rhen pushes open the doors, she once again hefts her glaive and follows grimly onto the bridge.
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Which of the statues is the black one, GM?
Chatterbeak flaps around the cieling.
This room is much nicer master. Room to fly in here there is. Next time master we should travel with better warriors. The big green one throws his weapon everywhere. Careful master. Better stand next to the Gnome. He's good.
The smart alec bird remains airborne for now, enjoying the room and looking about
Chatterbeak Perception1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Though the architectural style of this room is much different from the gothic Pharasmin cathedrals of the modern day, you recognize that the large, spiral symbol inlaid on the floor in the middle of the chamber is an ancient representation of The Lady of Graves. It dates from the Thassilonian period.
The lone black statue is immediately to your right, below you, in the south, southeastern portion of the chamber. You are unable to discern any unique features about the statues from your current height, however.
Let me know if you'd like to move through the doors to the north or do something crazy to get to the floor below. Not that I'm trying to direct your decisions, or anything.

Bastarger stifled a chuckle at the raven's criticism of Stirgen, before frowning as he pointed out- Hey! You don't see me chatting in private to Rhen here in Dwarven!
Not that I can speak Dwarven... but that's beside the point!
Excitedly taking in the large room with wide, eager eyes, Bastarger gauged the distance from the bridge to the ledge with all the statues, as he noted it could be reached on either end of the bridge.
Bastargers looking at dropping to the ledge rather than the floor below, once he's gauged the distance. The statues could do with a thorough inspection.
We should get a thorough look at these statues! he added as he produced a folded, 50 foot length of rope from his belt pouch and seeking something to secure it to.
"The doors on the sides," Lilley offers softly, looking down over the railing of the bridge, "they probably lead to the sealed doors on the left and right from the antechamber."If we can reach the same destination by climbing down, though, it will preserve uses of the magic chime, she thinks.
Stirgen is woken from his slight reverie by Bastarger's mild reproach. By way of apology "I am sorry good gnome, I will endeavor to limit my reverie to languages where you all may enjoy my banality" smiling earnestly but his face is a somewhat frightening rictus. "If you wish below I would not stop you... though I would hesitate to follow."

Bastarger smiled merrily at Chatterbeak.
Then you should accompany me Chatterbeak, I could use a good pair of eyes. I don't know much about history or religion, statues and the like. But I wouldn't feel right about you going on your own.
After he had secured the rope, Bastarger attempted to descend to the ledge below using the rope...
Bastarger lands on the stone floor with a loud clank - falling the last five feet. Fortunately, only his pride is dinged.
I'm going to assume you have some lighting implement.
Looking around him, he sees the statues closer up - each of the seven white ones are distinct from each other. The steps going down into the middle of the room are still in fantastic condition.

Bastarger had a torch in his shield sconce before he stowed it, he'll just be using that now after tossing it down.
Not truly knowing what he is looking for but curious to see all the statues close up, Bastargers intention is to inspect all of them, in particular the out of place dark one. He replaces his torch in his shield sconce and keeps a hand free.
Chatterbeak looks at the statues and surrounds. The bird was a manifestation of his masters will, the link established via an emphatic connection. It allowed Chatterbeak to talk and reason and even possess.some knowledeg beyond the birds experience.

Bastarger raised an eyebrow, a gesture unfortunately completely obscured by his helmet.
I'm not looting, i'm exploring! he yelled back up to the bridge happily. We know almost nothing about this place. It doesn't hurt to leave no stone unturned!
Chatterbeak, despite flying around and trying its hardest to remember something, is unable to glean any further information from the room.
Bastarger:
You take a circuit of the room. You have no idea who the statues represent, but you note the following about each.
Clockwise around the cathedral, starting with the southwestern statue, the white statues depict: a tall man with gems set in his forehead, wielding a flaming glaive; a beautiful woman with wild hair, holding a ranseur; a voluptuous, nude woman wielding a two-headed guisarme; a short, smiling man holding a longspear; an obese man with rotting flesh, wielding a scythe; a handsome, bearded man in extravagant clothes, wielding a lucerne hammer; and an imperious, heavyset woman holding a mirror and a halberd.
The eighth statue (in the south-southeast part of the room) is carved from dark stone and is threefold in form, portraying a tall woman with three faces looking in three different directions. One side has a kind face and cradles a baby in its arms, while a second side displays a more stern expression and holds an hourglass. The third face has a crazed look; its hands are empty, but thornless roses twine up both arms.
For the statues at V,16; S,19; AD,31 and AG,27 you spot what appears to be a door hidden behind each statue. The doors are all inaccessible with the statues in the way.
"Fantastic!" Rajah repeats as he notices the image upon the floor. "If you notice the spiral symbol there," he points toward the floor, "that is actually an ancient depiction of Pharasma herself. Which actually dates back to the Thassilonian era. Highly interesting, don't you think? It's too bad I've never discovered such a place dedicated to the Dawnflower."
"Please, call me Rajah. No need for formalities, good sir. If I may ask, a 'turn of phrase'? Of course, if it is of a personal nature, forgive me. I'll gladly withdraw my question of curiosity."
"A way to arrange language in an order that conjures emotions unrestrained within oneself or another. Poetry." a dreamy look in the ugly half-orc's eyes "It is what I was studying at the Lyceum before I was blessed with this most important charge in the bowels of Pharasmite tombs."
"So you are a poet? Truly fantastic! You'll have to regale us with a bit sometime. At least," he looks around at their current situation, "when we have the ability to enjoy it properly." He smiles as he gives him a pat on the shoulder. "And now you've piqued my curiosity once again. Lyceum?"
"I am a poet in training only, the Lyceum is the finest college of the arts in all Varisia if not beyond as well. But surely we digress?" moving to the lip of the walkway to peer at Bastarger below.

After having taken a good look at all the statues alone, Bastarger shouted up towards the bridge-
There are doors hidden behind several of these statues. Maybe all of them, my eyes are not particularly sharp. Perhaps a hidden opening mechanism is tied to the statues in some way. I could really use a hand down here!
Bastarger pointed to the statues he had noted doors behind.
V,16; S,19; AD,31 and AG,27 on the last map update.
"Unless they show signs of recent use," Lilley growls, "they are none of our concern. The dwarf is right: we are here to find out who is stealing bodies, not explore every nook and cranny of these crypts. If we find a trail that indicates the doors are being used by the thief, then we can try to force them open; until then, I see no reason to risk further damage to the Lady's domain."
Lilley has no skills that would be of any use down there, anyway, and I don't care to risk a Climb check with a -1 penalty if I don't have to.
None of the doors show sign of recent use, but now that you're noticing that, it appears that nothing in the Ossuary shows sign of recent use. It's as if you're the first people to disturb the crypt in ages. Dust lies in thick layers everywhere, and ancient cobwebs hang from the ceilings in gossamer curtains. Nevertheless, everything within has been preserved extraordinarily well - even wooden objects that would normally have succumbed to age thousands of years ago.
Rajah breaks into a big grin, "Oh come now... um... madam." Rajah reminds himself to ask her her name eventually. "This place is absolutely fantastic! Who knows what every nook and cranny might entail! Wonders beyond imagination! I'll attempt my way down to aid our small gnome friend. I like his enthusiasm." Rajah winks as he climbs over the edge and makes his way down the rope. "ON THE WAY, MY GOOD GNOME!"
Stirgen looks to Lilley, speaking quietly "I am of the same mind... but it would appear that the others are intent on this line of inquiry. Shall we below so as to ensure that the beauty of the room remains untarnished and Pharasma herself would approve of our conduct?"
Assuming Lilley agrees, Stirgen will move by rope...
Climb: Take 10 for 8
That assumes a meta-knowledge of the DCs and that an 8 is sufficient. If GM Idyll would prefer a free roll - Stirgen would first remove his breastplate.
By my count, that's two down the rope and four up here; I don't think "the others" have ruled en masse just yet. If everyone else follows Bastarger, she'll be the last down the rope, but as of right now Kenji and Rhen haven't yet agreed to climb down.
"I am neither clever nor perceptive," she replies to him blandly, "and my words will not sway anyone's behavior. What can I do down there other than get in the way?"
Rhen speaks aloud, to no one in particular, though he does stare down at the people who climbed the rope, "So you're thinking that someone stole some corpses and instead of going north (or south) to those bronze doors over there, they instead climbed 40' down to another level to hide them? That doesn't make any sense to me. We should check the doors on this level, staring at us in the face."

You seem to be suffering from a distinct lack of imagination, good Dwarf. Your statement has little credence unless we imagine each door leads to a dead end, when it has good odds of being an alternate route to somewhere else. Whoever took the bodies may have taken them downstairs by another route which one of these doors also happens to lead to. Nevermind Rajah, we can always return here later. My curiosity weeps but the others are clearly set upon crossing yonder bridge. I am sure we are in for some interesting experiences either way.
Bastarger made his way back up to the bridge, still enthusiastic.
"Very well. I would agree that it's best we do not divide." He looks toward the hidden doors. "But the wonders those doors might lead to could prove quite fascinating. Hopefully it is something we may return to, good gnome." Rajah then makes his way back to the others.
The group, once again united on the bridge, makes its way north to the double doors. Much like the ones into the grand chamber, these too push open easily. You move down another narrow hallway - this one, however, has no alcoves for skeletons or spiders. It is also pitch black. Only the light from Kenji's staff and Bastarger's torch light the way (unless someone else has a light source that I forgot about). After about 40', you come to a fork in the hallway. You can go either left or right. You are able to see nothing in the pitch black darkness in either direction.

Thanks GM.
Except for Chatterbeak, Kenji is updated.
This is his one dip for sorcerer, so I'm happy for a days rest to prep diffierent wizard spells and buy a scroll or two and head back in.
If we're not regrouping until tomorrow, you should be able to spend any leftover channels/spells to heal yourself, right? Or are you completely out until you relearn spells tomorrow?
You get them back at the time of day you can pray for spells. For most clerics, that's dawn, although my cleric of Desna gets hers when the stars come out at dusk.
You have been blessed with aid - you receive a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and saves against fear effects, plus 12 temporary hit points. This will last for 10 minutes.
Think it's been more than 10 minutes by now, AK. ;P
EDIT: Of course, if you put your favored class bonus in hp, you'll be at 23 anyway, won't you? Then you just have to change your total.
Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness
Oops. That 23/12 you have in your stat line threw me for a loop. For some reason I thought 23 was your total(Yeah I wasn't even thinking of being level 1. I just look at it and thought: "Well Bastarger's down 11"). Now I know why you have it backwards. My bad.

Don't we have things to sell and party loot shares to figure?
P.S- GM I'd like permission to switch out Gnome magic for Fell Magic from the advanced race guide. Seems like it would be a nice fit for Kaer Maga, especially if Bastarger's family has some debt to the Pharasmites...
An alchemist can study a wizard's spellbook to learn any formula that is equivalent to a spell the spellbook contains. A wizard, however, cannot learn spells from a formula book.
From the last paragraph of the Alchemy class feature under Alchemist in the APG. Alchemists can learn from a wizard's spellbook, but it's a one-way street.
What's Fell Magic involve, AK? They haven't put the ARG in the PRD yet, and I'm too lazy to go look in my hard copy. :)
Haven't had a chance to think about leveling Lilley yet. My husband's been off all week, and my son's 6th birthday is tomorrow. Give me about 24 hours.
Has anyone yet volunteered to keep the loot list in this game? I have the feeling Lilley's sword and armor have her in debt to the rest of the party at this point.

Fell Magic: Gnomes add +1 to the DC of any saving throws against necromancy spells that they cast. Gnomes with Wisdom scores of 11 or higher also gain the following spell-like abilities: 1/day—bleed, chill touch, detect poison, and touch of fatigue. The caster level for these effects is equal to the gnome’s level. The DC for these spells is equal to 10 + the spell’s level + the gnome’s Wisdom modifier. This racial trait replaces gnome magic.
Assuming the wand is disrupt undead, either Stirgen or Kenji can use it without UMD.
I don't mind making a list of what we've found and who has what, but I'm not up to the math of figuring everyone's share against what they've taken, which is definitely important with a Small fighter in the party. We're not likely to find a lot of gear Bastarger's size, so he'll need a fair share to buy things at full price.
I'm showing my lack of experience again, but I'm not sure how to handle crafting in terms of time. Previously for me, it's been that people had weeks in between "adventures," so crafting was more of a large-picture activity.
Do you have any proposed fix for the crafting of mundane items, AK? How did mundane crafting get screwed?

If we have downtime between adventures and levels, it works out ok... at least until you try and tackle something like full plate which can take years (literally).
Generally, crafting is incredibly slow. When I talk about how it gets screwed I am speaking specifically by comparison to the "on the road" magical crafting rules that let someone craft 250GP worth of magical items but 0GP worth of mundane.
Allowing a day's check of crafting each evening as part of the resting, preparing camp etc. would be my suggestion. I'm thinking about doing it in my games as a house rule to allow crafting 'on the go'.
It really depends on how much downtime we expect to have and how frequent I suppose. But as adventures rarely include loot for small sized characters, Bastarger's going to have to buy everything full price or craft it which is really going to hurt as opposed to medium characters taking looted gear for sell price value out of their shares by comparison.
That makes sense - but how will you handle crafting of armor and weapons in dungeons in your games? What implements will these people use to replace the anvil and forge?
I'm good with a daily check for sure when we're out of dungeons and will probably be ok with one in the dungeons if it makes sense.
silver holy symbols of Pharasma x7 -- returned to Pharasmins
Svillennius' formula book
belt of alchemist vials
alchemy lab (still beneath Ossuary)
sunrod, holy water, potion of cure light wounds, 150 gp EACH from Pharasmin church
We forgot to return those silver holy symbols to Valanthe, but they're part of the 'obviously Pharasmin' relics that aren't ours to take. Rajah, you haven't made a downtime post yet; why don't you give the priestess the holy symbols and tell her about the ancient symbol on the floor down there?
Is the chime of opening to be returned to the church, or are we allowed to keep it with however many charges are left? Either way, I assume it's ours until we finish clearing out the crypts.
How many charges are there in the bone wand? If Kenji learns detect magic this time, he can take 10 on the Spellcraft check to examine it if Valanthe didn't tell us. Also, we took a belt of vials of colored liquid off the necroalchemist; if those are extracts, I suppose they're useless now that he's dead. Can you sell a formula book like a spellbook, for half the cost of purchasing and scribing the formulae? By my math, the formula book with 6 1st-level formulae should be sellable for 105 gp, if so.
Yeah, I catch it now, but it went completely over my head at the time. I didn't remember them until I was going back through the thread compiling the treasure list. :)

I'll be out of contact until the very end of July, due to a trip to Kiev followed by days spent packing up the flat i'm living in here in Ukraine followed by a 3 day bus journey back. Its easier to just declare my absence now rather than try and keep up with things during this busy time. Roll on August!
And travel safely, Bastarger. We'll determine how to proceed in your absence.
What do you think everyone? Should we press on back into the Ossuary - or wait for his return? There are a ton of RP opportunities that we can avail ourselves of, but I'm not sure we can fill two weeks with one in-game day of that. Alternatively, you could wait a couple of days before returning to the Ossuary and we can RP all of that.
Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer
I am up for playing. We are missing 1 from our dwarf.going down anyway so may be take on that extra player.to keep us at 4 while Bastarger is gone and he makes 5 when he returns?
We have five players now: Rajah, Bastarger, Kenji, Lilley, and Stirgen. Adding a new character would take us up to six. Six is a lot of PCs to maneuver around in dungeons and buildings, especially with reach weapons in play.
I'd vote not to go back into the Ossuary until AK's back. Still undetermined how much time that leaves us to kill on the surface, though. Lilley's good for sturm-und-dranging around about the general unfairness of life for a while yet, and she wants to go check on her bard friend who didn't show up at the cathedral.
I second Joana's words - lets wait on AK before we head back underground.
There's more than enough in Kaer Maga to keep us busy for a day... if you're really stuck for ideas then just head to Hospice when the sun goes down...
There's more than enough in Kaer Maga to keep us busy for a day...
Pssh. This sleepy little burg? ;)
We could always regroup at some point to go back down the necroalchemist's stairs and pack up the alchemy lab for sale, all of us but Bastarger who's too busy at the forge. That would give us an excuse to all get back together for in-character chatting purposes, if we run out of things to do on our own, without committing to any fights without our fighter.
Hey everyone. I am so sorry. Work and a crashed hard drive (in a MAC!) have conspired against my PbP'ing. The hard drive will be repaired soon, but my time may or may not be. I believe that I need to step away from the boards for a bit longer.
This pains me, as I have loved this game and you the players. I'll try to come back once the load lightens, but I completely understand if you all have moved on by then.
You've been wonderful, patient and creative. Thanks for adventuring with me.
No problems GM Idyll - real life happens to us all.
I'm not going anywhere :) - the only thing I'd suggest is that when you're back and ready to kick off again, PMs would probably be useful to draw us back in. I've noticed that the campaign tracker can be a bit finicky when it comes to keeping threads updated, etc.
As per PM received:
Hello!
I just wanted to shoot a quick note to let you know I'm coming back to the boards soon, and I intend to start up a new campaign rather than restart my old ones. I took on more than I could chew last time I was here - I think I'm a one-campaign kind of GM. I had a blast with your group and would love to have you in my future campaign, if you're at all interested.
See you around the boards!
Idyll
Looks like this specific campaign will be getting shut down, and Idyll will start afresh with a new one. Along that bent I'd have to reserve judgment on the new campaign until I'd heard some details before figuring out if I'm interested or not.
GM Idyll - could you please turn this campaign into an inactive one?
