Personality: Ian is currently a mischievous and delinquent kid with an absentee father. He spends most of his time hanging out with the more tolerant adults, sneaking into places that he shouldn't be, and playing games and pranks on people in town. He, however, has a strong sense of righteous anger because of the consistently poor way that he's been treated in the course of his life. He defends younger kids from their bullies and speaks up against people who talk s&+@ without fear. Backstory: Ian's birth was an event fraught with tragedy and confusion, and nobody has ever told Ian the whole story of what happened. Ian's conception was the result of an unfaithful relationship that his mother had and his birth resulted in his mother's death by immolation. His birth father was a chaotic and primal fire spirit that had found its way onto the Material Plane and was curious about experiencing what it had to offer. Impersonating a human, he charmed and impregnated Ian's mother before taking off once again to experience newer and more exotic experiences, leaving Ian's family in disarray. Ian's father Nathaniel has never forgiven him for his parentage and has turned out to be a very neglectful father, leaving his son's care to a young teenager and family friend named Ingrid. Ian's childhood was full of flagrantly ignoring Ingrid's attempts to soften his edges, constant reinforcement from his father that his mother was a cheating whore, and subsequent constant avoidance of home. Ian spent hours of every day playing pranks on the various adults of the village, exploring the surrounding forest, exploring the river, and procrastinating learning a trade. The awakening of his magic powers was a surprise to him, as his father had never told him of the fire spirit. He has limited control over his powers, which results in situations where he uses them on accident in either detrimental (lighting a test sheet on fire in school out of frustration) or beneficial. One time, when he was exploring deep in the woods by himself, Ian stumbled upon a pair of hobgoblin raiders brazenly stalking around in human lands. Bloodthirsty murderers with serrated weapons and a pain fetish, the creatures took off after him. Ian had no choice but to run, being a 12-year-old kid with nothing but the shirt on his back, but tripped on a thick tree root after just a short distance, leaving him sprawled on the ground at the creatures' mercy. Just at the moment where he was convinced of his own death, he screwed his eyes shut and threw his arms up in self-defense. His magic bubbled up inside of him and a blinding, disorienting flash of light paralyzed the hobgoblins. Ian took that opportunity to run as fast as his legs could carry him, eventually coming upon a hunter, with whose help he summoned a militia posse to rout the pair of hobgoblins. Ian was the talk of the town for weeks afterward, having miraculously survived a hobgoblin attack alone. He was expressly forbidden following that encounter from going into the forest by Ingrid, but he ignored that order. Today, he lacks direction. He has no particular aptitude for any trade and no connections with anyone important, and no military expertise either. He spends his days just trying to figure out what his next step is. Headstrong Values: Child abuse, unwarranted arrogance, unthinking violence, lack of respect Known Associates: - Nathaniel Ros (LN human expert 2), Ian's father. Though he used to be a much softer person, the death of his wife, Ian's mother, hardened him. He blames Ian for his wife's death and so has a hard time facing his son. He works in town as a competent blacksmith and is well-respected. - Ingrid Newberry (NG human commoner 1), the childcare professional who raised Ian. She is in her early 30s, and is the daughter of one of Ian's father's older adult friends. She is kind and caring, and tried her best to love Ian. She is one of the few good influences in his life. - Olga Petrovka (N human adept 1), the midwife who was present at Ian's birth. She is only one of a few people who know about the circumstances of Ian's mother's death and the fact that Ian is not entirely human. She looks out for him from a distance, but knows better than to butt into his life. - Suzanna Barker (N young human commoner 1), a young girl that Ian met at school. The pair have a budding young-teenager romance consisting of daring each other to do things, holding hands, and talking about their pasts and families. Ian feels that she is the first person he was able to actually talk to, and Suzanna admires Ian for his bravery and recklessness. - Kelysia (CN water nixie), an aquatic fey creature that Ian met while exploring the banks of the Marideth river. She only likes children, and so has been avoiding Ian more and more as he's gotten older. - Gregary Potter (NE young human warrior 1), An older boy who's gone to school with Ian for years now. Their relationship has seen a range between friendship and violent conflict due to Gregary's small-mindedness (in Ian's view) and Ian's infuriating unreliability and tendency to prank (in Gregary's view). |
