"I like ALL weapons." Yazi says as she gleefully takes the necklace and puts it on.
"Sweet!... now how do I make other people blow up?" she asks, looking at each member of the party for answers.

Khayal looks at Yazi with a blank stare. He has no idea how the necklace works and even less desire to figure it out.

Nasir looks the necklace over. "That would look good on you." she says with a grin.

(Sure, give the highest-damage melee player the multiple incendiary grenades. What could go wrong?)
(Moving everyone into the sea cavern on the Encounter Map.)

Khayal Bin Haleen |

Khayal takes a look across the bridge and water before taking a deep breath and crossing the bridge. I would like to move to the platform but have a sinking feeling something is going to happen on the way across.

GM_Pace |

The fighter finds the bridge slippery, having been in a humid, dark environment for so long. (Oil lamps on the walls notwithstanding.)
Failure by 5 or more under DC 12 means you have fallen into the water. It's shallow enough to not immediately drown a heavily-laden human, but you'll still need Swim checks to get to either side this way.
There appears to be a glowing, golden bastard-length sword in the middle of the sea cave's pool.
This area is as sandy as the other shoreline. You see an overly large single door carved into the rock around the curve of the wall. The door itself is made of stone and decorated with a carving of a jackal-headed man holding a hatchet in one hand and a hand-sized spider in the other.

"There's a sword in the pool!" Yazi lets out with excitement while pointing at the glowing weapon. "Do we have any more rope? I could probably just jump down there and get it."

"You don't know what else might be in the pool Yaz." Nasir says looking at the glowing weapon.

Khayal Bin Haleen |

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 Khayal's foot begins to slip on one of the wet planks, but with a somewhat elegant hop he is able to make it across without actually slipping.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Khayal sheaths his sword and pulls his bow, knocking an arrow. Yazi if you go in I'll cover you.

![]() |

"Thanks!" Yazi replies as she starts to strip, leaving her magical shoes on though.
If there aren't any objections she'll hop down into the water and begin making her way towards the sword.

GM_Pace |

(It's a headache, that's what it is.)
(But the discussion thread has changed how I see this encounter, and I am going to change it accordingly. It will be a Perception vs. Steath check, as it should be, followed by partial cover, not total cover. Which fits for reasons I'm not allowed to go into as the GM.)
While the fighter draws his bow, Yazi splashes into the salt water of the sea cave. (I could ask for a Swim check, Yazi, but we'll just assume you get there eventually.)
As she reaches down under the water, Yazi's hand passes through the image of the glowing hand-and-a-half sword, her fingers touching the silt on the bottom. The "sword" dissolves.
(I want a painting/picture of this instant, especially Yazi in the water.)
SURPRISE ROUND

Eye Ray (Ray of Enfeeblement, RTA): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
You see a half-dome rise above the sputtering waves from the cave mouth. Two protrusions come out of the top of the half-dome and go back into the water. It looks like a really big (Medium-sized) unblinking eye half-submerged in the water.
You see a 5-foot wide creature like an orb dominated by a central eye and a large serrated mouth to the south at the entrance for the seawater in the cave. Hundreds of small seaweed-like bristles hang from the bottom of its body. Two large crab-like pincers protrude from its body, and two long, thin eyestalks sprout from the top of its orb. Wide but thin "wings" to either side pulsate in the water, keeping it afloat. The two eyestalks glow yellow, pointing at you.
You become paralzyed and freeze in place. After (number of rounds equal to twice her Constitution score) 28 rounds (which is an eternity here), you'll have to worry about drowning. And with Pearl Diver, of course.
Your strength is sapped by 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 points as a multi-colored ray hits you.
(Khayal, Yazi)

Holy happy posting batman! 16 missed posts...
Hajar's eyes dart to and fro looking for the source of danger.

GM_Pace |

Looks like the monsters beat us all in init.
(What the? Those are NOT the numbers I rolled when I posted! Confound it, putting Rayhan's Perception at the top ruined all of them! Just play the initiative line as-is, ignore the numbers.)
(Actually, at this point, all we have is Yazi under the water. Nobody notices anything out of the ordinary, yet.)

Bartan Harrowborn |

Same here, Bartan's at a +7.
Bartan looks around, but sees nothing of use, and Yazi is obviously in trouble. He moves toward the water's edge, but dares not enter yet.

GM_Pace |

Rayhan holds his wand ready, just like Khayal.
A massive eye-shaped creature rises out of the waters, two stalks on top twisting each way to look around.
This is an Eye of the Deep - a deep-sea predator vaguely reminiscent of a Beholder. Like a flying Eye Tyrant, the eyes of the creature - central and any stalks - have magical properties.
(Readied actions - Khayal, Rayhan)
Rayhan doesn't say a word, just points with his wand.

Yazi smirks, but she loses that when sees Nasir's expression. "I'm sorry Rose. With all that they've been throwing at us I figured a lost sword wouldn't be that far out there... I'll try to safer next time. I promise."She finishes with a quick kiss on the dancer's cheek and a soft smile.
