Surprise Round

Rilka swings her halfling sling staff like a club at the elf near her horse’s head.
”Hold on!” she yells to Dalton, squeezing the horse with her legs. Pointing at the same elf, she directs Fine Winter Day to attack.

Standard action: halfling sling staff melee attack elf at D7
Free action: command mount to attack same elf, using 1 inspiration point to augment check.

Round 1
Still in the saddle, Rilka shifts her weight to thrust the sling-end of her staff at the elf.

Standard action=MW halfling sling staff with inspiration (costs 2 points!) One inspiration point left for the day

dice:
MW halfling sling staff: 1d20 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 4 + (5) = 13 damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Rilka turns quickly, clubbing one of the elves over the head but he stops the horse's attack with his shield.

The two at the back lash out with their loud war cries, one burying his scythe into Dalton's leg and the other leaving a jagged gash on Rilka's arm. The other two focus their attacks on Toramin, but only the ranseur connects. The salesman stabs Bjorkus in the ribs with the dagger and he feels his blood curdle at the poison on the blade. As a faint wind blows by your hear soft whispering, and suddenly the elves are moving much quicker. Perception to know more, add Spellcraft if you have it.

Rilka leans over to lash out again, but the elf is now wary of the little sling and deflects the attack with his shield.

Lindale hops off his horse and moves around behind the elf, drawing his Rapier. "Fool elf. You have bitten off too much today. You will meet your end."

Judgement: Justice activated. +1 to attack rolls

The elves continue their onslaught, hooting and trying to sow confusion. The elf who was attacking Dalton runs around him, going to help the salesman. The effect speeding them up truly shows here as the rest unleash a barrage of attacks. The terbutje leaves two more slashes on Rilka. Toramin gets assaulted badly by the elf with the double blade, who spins the weapon expertly and always seems to cut where he's not expecting while his friend with the ranseur pokes the dwarf from afar. The salesman looks nervous, as if he didn't expect to have this much attention directed towards him. He slashes twice at Lindale with the knife, but only manages to leave barely more than a paper cut.

Dalton felt relieved the poisonous shiv had been removed from his enemy. Granted, the wizard had no idea how to properly wield one, but at least it couldn't be used against him.

When the next round arrives:

Having disabled some of their offense, the transmuter decided to take the fight to them. He looked to their leader and his companions. "Yield your freedom - or forfeit your lives!" He attempted to bludgeon the heartiest looking one other than the leader. If their morale fails, they may flee.

The elf with the terbutje shows no mercy to Rilka, ripping the jagged weapon across her face. He howls his victory, steeping over to strike at Dalton as well, cutting open his leg. The elf with the two bladed weapon is barely able to stand, but in a last ditch effort he shoves the blade into Toramin's leg, spitting and then passing out. The faint whispering is heard on the wind again, and Bjorkus sees the air around him shimmer slightly, but can't tell if anything is wrong. As the main fight settles, the entire party besides Toramin see a lean figure about 30 feet north of the path trying to sneak away, but doing a very bad job of it. He's not wearing any armor and doesn't seem nearly as fast as the other elves were.

Toramin sets his horse after the fleeing elf, bringing down a powerful overhanded blow, but the elf turns at the last second and just twists away from the attack. He brings his scythe back over with two quick chops, the second one felling Toramin and knocking him from his horse. The elf takes a moment to spit at the bleeding dwarf, then swings up onto the horse and spurs the animal away from the fight.

Missed his AC by 1, tough break. Toramin takes 23 damage from two separate attacks, which leaves him at -4 I believe.

And now there's some other figure that suddenly started fleeing the scene. He's on foot and doesn't appear to have unnatural speed like the other elves.

Dalton looks from the corpses to the remaining foes. Quite a reputation we're getting, I bet. Though he wouldn't mind adding them to the sands, the stragglers could enhance the dangerous image the group would need to convince Targ of their prowess, perhaps allowing his words of import to be heard by them. Either way, the horses will be faster without me, and I don't have much to add.

Still possessing the dagger he took, Dalton found the green substance and took a gander at it. Certainly a poison, but I've no idea to its effects. Alchemy had always interested the man, but he'd never had any training in it. Just something else I missed-out on, I suppose.

The rest though? There was nobody like a shopkeeper to judge the value of spoils.

It seemed magic wasn't all too rare in this land. Given their acceleration capabilities, the mage expected to see only more. Worrysone. If witches and wizards abound, we'll have to assume there's more to these arid denizens than meets the eye.

I understand this may take a spot of time.

Dalton managed to knock out most of those rolls, but he failed on the sapphire and the ring. Also there are still the poisons to identify.

"Those are rather queer-looking weapons," mutters Dalton to nobody in particular. He compares his dagger briefly to the others before tossing them all in the sack. Then, he thinks better of it, looking into the bag of holding for anything else that may have been left behind before continuing to fill it with the gems and coins.

The trinkets were another matter entirely though. Useful! Other than a nearly bottomless sack - and whoever could have enough of those? - the variety of baubles would serve them well. Other than the ring, which eluded him in its use, the mage had a good idea how the items could best be recycled. The goggles will make Lindale's life much easier, I imagine, and the defensive properties on the necklace and cape might help our fighters in a skirmish. Dalton was unsure if the duplicitous mantle would work well on a halfbreed as large as Bjorkus, but it couldn't hurt. And I like being mixed! It was something he didn't admit to anyone, but the transmuter had grown fond of his blend of the races. In all that heavy metal, footwear accustomed to the sands would be great for Toramin ... that is, if he wasn't attached overly much to his own boots.

As far as the substances, maybe Lindale or Rilka could determine their alchemical nature - they looked sharp enough.

When Dalton sees the rest of the group, he'll make those suggestions. I'm putting this here now in case we meet up when I'm not around.

He takes a closer look at the ring and amulet. If these are native to the land, it could help to study their patterns; I could craft something similar to make my appeal more authentic - perhaps give a gift to please Targ.

Dalton is taking a purely mundane assessment of the jewelry now. The kind of metal, the twisting (if any) of the band, the segments of the beads (if any), etc. would all be things he'd look for.

Also, irrespective if the party agrees with Dalton's assessment of the loot or not, he will keep the bag of holding and give out the rest of the magic items - except perhaps the ring if we still can't find out what it does.

Interesting. Give me a craft (jewelsmithing) check and it could aid on your social rolls later.

Lots of posts!

After Rilka is tended to, Bjorkus takes after the slower figure.

Do I need to roll anything?

*Checks Bjorkus's move speed*

Shouldn't you have a move speed of 40? Your archetype doesn't take away fast movement. Unless I'm missing some reason why you lost this ability make sure you update your sheet. Either way you can run him down with a horse if need be.

The lean figure has a good head start but Bjorkus is much faster, and within two minutes Bjorkus tackles him. He cries out and tries punching and pushing Bjorkus off, but his blows are as weak as a child's. Up close you can see this is another elf, but he looks to be the runt of the litter. "Let me go you big brute!"

Yeah, I'm assuming a barbarian with an archetype for grappling plus his fancy new grappling item will have no problems with this guy.

Yeah it should be 40. I miss hero lab. =(

Bjorkus lifts the caster by his collar and frisks him roughly, making sure to disarm him of weapons and anything that might be associated with spellcasting. "You and your friends bit off more than you could chew this time", the bull growls. "Gimme one reason I shouldn't do to you what you were gunna do to us?"

Bjorkus finds a bone dagger, a spellbook (easily marking him as a wizard), an amulet that's radiating magic and a set of pearls radiating magic.

"Listen, I'm not one of them! They forced me to help them, they threatened my little girl and this was my only option! Please let me go, she'll die without me..."

Bjorkus snorts and glances at Dalton while offering up the loot.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Bjorkus believes the elf is telling the truth and only wants to get out of this alive.

Bjorkus is going to end up waiting on Dalton's judgement and magic item evaluation.

The minotaur retrieves a length of rope and begins tying the mage up.

Rilka finds Toramin lying on his back, severely wounded. While he isn’t the heaviest dwarf she’d met by any means, he is well outside of her ability to move. Scooping sand away, she’s able to tunnel one hand under Toramin. ”You can’t die yet Toramin! Torag needs you here lots more than he needs you at his forge. Hey! Toramin!”

After long moments of digging through his backpack trying to feel for the healing wand, she finally finds it. She pulls it out and sends a burst of healing magic into Toramin without delay. ”Toramin?” she asks, searching his face for consciousness.

CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

As soon as I posted this I realized I actually have no idea what the +X should be for the CLW roll.

Male Dwarf Paladin (Stonelord) 11 l HP: 105/105 (127/127) l Init: +1 l AC: 30 (44 v giants) [T: 12 (14); FF: 27; CMD: 29/33(43)] l Fort: +13 (+15), Ref: +7, W: +9 (+11) (All saves increase by +5 for p, sp, and spls) l DR: 5 (Adamantine) l Per: -1

Sputtering on the healing potion, Toramin wakes up, and gets to his feet.

"The horse is gone and with it some food and desert supplies. Luckily, I never trusted it enough to back my armor or the magic the Aestherics gave me on it. A shame about those salt tablets though."

"My prize bull! Well-done. Here, take this - it'll keep you safer from thieves like them." He then hands Bjorkus the amulet.

Dalton stares at the man flatly - and silently. "It seems your wares were much cheaper to get this way. And what's this? A caster's tome? You must be the mastermind of the bunch then." Dalton flips through the pages quickly to get a power level of the man in front of them. As the man no doubt tries to give excuses for his behavior, Dalton barks at him: "Turn away from me unless you want the axe. You're the property now, and I don't take kindly to my wares bothering me."

If the spellbook contains any 4th level spells or above:
Dalton uses his message spell to whisper to Bjorkus: "This man is capable of magic far beyond my ability. One moment with him able to use some of this could put us in our graves; I'd be more comfortable with him in his."

Otherwise:
"It didn't seem to cross your mind I might have a little girl too." Dalton shuts the book with disgust. He waits a moment for any response the man might have. "I hear the best way to protect yourself against a mage is to make sure they can't speak. There's a very easy way to do that."

Just to be clear, the "salesman" is bleeding to death in the sand. This wizard is a different individual.

Dalton flips through the book and finds the most powerful spell to be second level. The size of the elf's collection is similar to his own.

He pales. "N-no please. My little girl, she'll die without me! Please, I won't trouble you anymore, I have no problems with you or your slaves!"

Spellbook:

0th - All (on wizard/sorcerer list)

1st - Endure Elements
Mount
Obscuring Mist
Bungle
Magic Missile
Silent Image
Vanish
Ant Haul
Alter Winds

2nd - Dust of Twilight
Invisibility
Twisted Space
Codespeak

Bjorkus snorts and gives Dalton a nod as he slip the cord around his thick bull-neck.

He roughly jostles the prisoner as Dalton grills him.

Did we figure out what these items are?

Forgot to roll spellcraft for the new ones you brought from him:

Spellcraft(pearls): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27

"Good," responds Dalton with disinterest as he looks at the items. "Because you're one of them now."

Pearls: Pearls of power 1
Amulet: His bonded item

Ooh, Dalton's really getting into character with the slaver business.

He curses and tries to tear away from Bjorkus in vain. "Curses on you, half-breed! Curses on you and your entire line!" He breaks down into tears, going limp in Bjorkus's grasp.

Start burning through your healing ladies, I'm pretty sure I nearly killed 3 of you that fight.

Bjorkus lines up with the halfling to have the poison-seeping wound along his ribs tended to.

47/50 Rilka's wand (I think)

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

I know Toramin cannot use the wand, I'm assume someone else is using it on him.
