"I suggest you cast the flying spell on either myself or Lusk so we can maneuver quickly. A mist outside the door would help obscure us while we open it. That's probably all the advantage we will be able to get."

I like the idea of Obscuring mist to reduce any targeted readied actions, though it won't stop a fireball. I suggest you Fly one of us, cast the mist at the top of the stairs, then we move up and go. ;-)

Looming at the center of this large, open-air roofop is a gigantic
golden orrery, with each planet rotating on delicate golden arms around a bright, polished sun. Three balconies overlook the edge of the tower, each one outfitted with a massive telescope. Above, almost as if the tower were aimed at its churning core, the spiraling vortex of the sky looms.

As you step up onto the stairs, a voice rings out. However, you do not see any elf.

Thaddeus has See Invisibility on, so his first action will be to scan the room. Assuming Noveliss is hiding, Thaddeus currently has +13 on Perception. (Pattern Recognition is from 3.5, so the +4 to Search can probably be rolled into general Perception now, unless Spiderbeard rules otherwise.)

If Thaddeus can see Nolveniss:

Thaddeus will move into a good position, and cast Glitterdust (10 ft radius burst) on Noveliss' position. It'll automatically outline him, and DC 17 Will save or he's blinded.

It appears he cast a summon monster spell, but something is clearly wrong as the spell should not have taken that long. Make a will save, DC 20.

Fiona, Variel, and Mutt all strike out at the ground-based opponents, pleased to have someone they can properly target. They all lunge out at the spiders, and the spiders are all slaughtered in seconds - real or shadow creatures. Another brutal strike from Lusk sends Nolveniss pinwheeling through the air. The wizard snarls as he flies back before he lets fly a brutally hot fireball into the middle of the party!

As you recover from the fireball, you see an unwanted visitor heading up the stairs very quietly, but not quite enough for the party. The assassin is incoming, his form flicks into view as he enters Variels' invisibility purge. Realizing he's been spotted, he races for the group in the wake of the fireball, lunging at Mutt with his rapier.

Everyone takes 35 fire damage, DC 20 reflex save for half! Mutt takes an additional 5 damage, and must make a DC 11 fort save or fall asleep!

Mutt and Fiona descend on the assassin with unbelievable fury, despite his obvious skill and assuredly awesome assassin abilities, it's a matter of several chops from Mutt's axe and finally a THWOCK from Fiona's hammer to send his head flying clear off of the tower, and off into the armageddon echo.

Swooping away from Lusk, bleeding and barely alive, Nolveniss fires off another spell in a desperate attempt to be rid of the vigilante, crackling lightning firing through LUsk and into Mutt below.
