Lena steps up.

The professor was both smart and wise. He new mush, and he knew when to use it. I first met the professor when he saved my life first from some undead, and then some local townsfolk who wanted to lynch me. Over the last few years I have traveled with him and without him and the one thing I have learned. Being smart and wise is a rare commodity. And kindness is less so. I'll miss you professor Lorrimar

Norna and Eldon moves the listeners and a few sniffles are heard as the villagers in attendance try to quell their emotions. Kendra waits until all else has spoken and then makes her way to the podium. I want to thank you all for coming and honoring my father so. He was a devoted husband to my late mother, wonderful father to myself my entire life and a loyal friend to countless companions. Dad accomplished so much in his life and even being retied for several years he never gave up on his hobbies constantly tinkering and reading every book he could find, he never truly retired. I would not be the woman I am today if it wasn't for my father's guidance and somewhat persistent encouragement. I love you so much daddy, sleep well and someday i will hold you in my arms once more........

Kendra steps down from the podium and Father Grimburrow returns to give his final words followed by a parting prayer. Kendra walks to the group
I would just like to thank you for saying such lovely words, you reminded me how much father helped those around him...We will be leaving soon and i believe councilmen Hearthmount will meet us at the house to finalize the Will & Testament.

Eldon walks back to the mansion with the others.

I wonder why those people on the road tried to stop us? They mentioned the professor being a necromancer! What could that be about? Something's amiss...

Burlee was a ghostly presence at the funeral. He didn't speak, for he didn't want to, not because of such ambiguous emotions like sadness over passing. Kendra spoke, and he didn't look up, only because of disinterest. The monk was quiet too, so he could get away with it, at least. When the service was over he got up and followed the group, using his axe as a rather obnoxious cane. Seeing the Manse in sight, he was hoping there was food at the reception. He's been hungry since the inn!

Humans in this area are so somber about death, not as the necessary end of a life well lived: No "wake" here, it seems. Much better, I would think, than the Bleaching, the slow, half-living death of gnomes. Perhaps that explains something about the view of death in this area - the fear of the living dead, the undead. Why did the think he was a necromancer? That, certainly, doesn't sound like the professor I knew.

The party returns back to the Lorrimor estate with no complications. You are ushered into the familiar room and as before Kendra nervously occupies herself in the kitchen gathering more food and drink for the party as they wait for Councilman Hearthmount to arrive.

Kendra appears back into the room with a similar configuration of Ustalavian cuisine, but this time giving Burlee his own heaping plate full of food to the rest of the party's delight. Councilman Hearthmount will be here momentarily, He eluded to the fact that he was going to report Mr Hephenus' actions tonight to Sheriff Caeller. Thank you all for not reacted to that old fool, He'll get his one day I'm just sure of it. My father a necromancer ugh..such lunacy.

The banter continues for a great while allowing everyone to become more acquainted, finally Councilmen Hearthmount arrives slightly winded from the brisk walk waiting a moment then knocks on the front door.

Vashin Hearthmount is a portly fellow about the age of fifty. He is well dressed and as it seems well a fairly important individual in town beyond what his title would already suggest.

Knowledge local DC 20:
The infamous uprising of 4670 (approx. 50 years ago) led to the demise of hereditary rule in Ustalav. Ravengro was one of the town's that were all to eager to accept the new democracy and adopted its principals within a few years. The town has four elected Council members that fulfill the needs of local government. Councilmen Hearthmount has many responsibilities one of which is the town solicitor.

Councilman Vashian enters the room greeting everyone as he takes a seat near the fire. He produces a scroll case from wihnin his jacket, shows that the professor’s personal seal is unbroken, then breaks the wax and opens the case. As he does, a small iron key falls out of the tube, clattering noisily onto the table. Undaunted by the key, the councilman begins to read,“I, Petros Lorrimor, being of sound mind, do hereby commit to this parchment my last will and testament. Let it be known that, with the exception of the specific details below, I leave my home and personal belongings entire to my daughter Kendra. Use them or sell them as you see fit, my child. “Yet beyond the bequeathing of my personal effects, this document must serve other needs. I have arranged for the reading of this document to be delayed until all principals can be in attendance, for I have more than mere inheritance to apportion. I
have two final favors to ask.

“To my old friends, I hate to impose upon you all, but there are few others who are capable of appreciating the true significance of
what it is I have to ask. As some of you know, I have devoted many
of my studies to all manner of evil, that I might know the enemy and
inform those better positioned to stand against it. For knowledge
of one’s enemy is the surest path to victory over its plans.

Shaking his head Heathmount pauses to pour a glass of wine taking a sip and then continues again..

“And so, over the course of my lifetime, I have seen fit to acquire
a significant collection of valuable but dangerous tomes, any one
of which in the wrong circumstances could have led to an awkward
legal situation. While the majority of these tomes remain safe under
lock and key at the Lepidstadt University, I fear that a few I have
borrowed remain in a trunk in my Ravengro home. While invaluable
for my work in life, in death, I would prefer not to burden my
daughter with the darker side of my profession, or worse still, the
danger of possessing these tomes herself. As such, I am entrusting
my chest of tomes to you, posthumously. I ask that you please deliver
the collection to my colleagues at the University of Lepidstadt, who
will put them to good use for the betterment of the cause.
“Yet before you leave for Lepidstadt, there is the matter of
another favor—please delay your journey one month and spend
that period of time here in Ravengro to ensure that my daughter is
safe and sound. She has no one to count on now that I am gone,
and if you would aid her in setting things in order for whatever she
desires over the course of this month, you would have my eternal
gratitude. From my savings, I have also willed to each of you a sum
of one hundred platinum coins. For safekeeping, I have left these
funds with Embreth Daramid, one of my most trusted friends in
Lepidstadt—she has been instructed to issue this payment upon
the safe delivery of the borrowed tomes no sooner than one month
after the date of the reading of this will.
“I, Petros Lorrimor, hereby sign this will in Ravengro on this
first day of Calistril, in the year of 4720

Once the will is read, Councilman Vashian looks to Kendra, who thanks him and dismisses him.

Norna pauses respectfully until the councilman leaves, then stands up. Looking around the room and then to Kendra, she says, "The Professor must not have wanted to speak for us, but you can count on me and, if may say so as I look around this room, you now have all of us to count on. Even if the Professor had not asked, we wouldn't leave you with such animosities about."

"And as such, I believe we should stay with you here, if you'll have us."

Eldon takes some food from the plate Kendra brought in earlier. "The tomes concern me though. We should make sure no one can reach them until we have to", he says before taking a bite.

Burlee was thankful for his food that he's finally received. He nodded to Kendra and began chowing down at the meal, of which, he hardly noticed, he had moreso of than the others. After slurping and rather noisily and messily eating, like a ravenous wolf tearing into a newly found lamb, he belched repeatedly and patted his now slightly jutted stomach. Picking his teeth with a small bone he found, he watches the portly fellow bounce through the door, like some terribly wonderful demonstration on the effects of gravity on fat.

Nice dress... He chuckled to himself watching the fellow pull out the parchment and read the last will and testament of their fallen commodity. His brow furrowed at the mention of tomes, and the fact they were hidden from public eye. Bah! Kindle fer tha feere.

The ball of wealth also stated that our commodity willed us to stay here a month. If Ah get this kinda food, Ah'm good an' willin'. He nodded to himself once more, confirming his allegiance. He stroked his beard and found a piece of bread that was rather large in it, in which he quickly stuffed into his face. He almost choked when he heard that much money would be given, though. He coughed, but only for a moment, swallowing hard. "A HOONDRED?!" He blurted out. Looking around him, clearly shocked at the sum while everyone else seemed to be rather calm about, he just had no idea how to respond, so he took his axe, jammed it into the table and stood onto the table, wildly proclaiming. "AYE, lass, ye've got me on board with ye! Tell meh who ter kill and when, and Ah'll do it!"

You may stay as long as you like plus I imagine this is what father would of wanted

the truck i believe is in fathers study, follow me the party is led into another room futher down the hall the entire room was surrounded by ceiling to floor bookshelves filled to the brim easily rivaling many small libraries in ustalav. In the center of the room sits a oval desk and ontop of the desk sits a small wooden lavishly embroidered truck.

Norna picks up the key and brings it along, her gnomish curiosity getting the better of her. Her green eyes flicker and flash in anticipation.

Is there a lock to the trunk? And does the key fit and work in it?

I love the way Burlee is, haha.

Dimwit dwarf! Outrageous. But I shall not make a fuss of it, for poor Kendra shouldn't have to bear withness to that.

Eldon's about to secure the key, expecting it to give access to the tomes, when Norna picks it up. He follows the others to the study, and notices some flickering and flashing in the gnome's eyes.

I hope the girl keeps it safe. Otherwise I might suggest she gives it to me, and I'll make sure no one gains access to the tomes.

Norna walks into the room behind Kendra with key in hand Alas I've forgotten the key Kendra turns slightly bumping into the anxious gnome. But it seems you haven't. You seem more excited than I to unveil the contents of the chest, please have the honors

She gives a playful bow as she moves out of the way. Norna's child-like anticipation seems to quell much of the somberness in the room. Norna places the key into the recessed lock on the truck face with one turn the latch clicks and the truck opens slightly. The truck contains several old tomes and one relatively new one. The newest tome sits on the top and bears the phrase “Read me now!” scratched into the leather cover.

With a quick touch on his own arm and a few mumbled words Eldon casts resistance on himself. "Let's be careful with that!"

Burlee took Kendra's hand and plopped back into his seat. He looked at the axe for a moment before prying it from the thick table. It took him a few seconds, as the group had already left him behind. Using his foot for leverage, he pulls and with a rather loud clang, removes it like Arthur did to Excalibur. He catches up to the group to see the books. He grimaces. Books, books, and more books. The better the fire, then! "We startin' a bonfire, lassy?"

To everyone who says they're enjoying Burlee, I thank you very much. This is my first Pathfinder/DnD experience, and knowing a character I've made for previous experiences does well here, I'm glad to hear it! So, thank you very much, and hopefully soon, you'll see more of BURLAY's personality

No master dwarf, we need these books to take to the University in Lepidstadt She pauses a moment as if hoping to jog some distant memory. Slightly dissatisfied she continues. The books need to be delivered in order for you to get paid at the end of this month...

"BAH! Ah'm borred. Ceme end wake meh up when yerr doin' somefin, or ya decide tae burn these wastes ef space." He harrumphs rather loudly and about-faces, waddling his way up the stairs, tripping slightly near the top and grumbling about it. He slams the door, then, staring into the darkness, he finds something he thinks is a bed and graciously thumps into it. Harder than a bed, but comfortable nonetheless. He rests his eyes and twiddles his thumbs, thinking about setting the books ablaze anyway.

Norna grabs the book from the chest much to Eldon's dismay, her hands begin to tremor with excitement as she unravels the string tied around the center of the book. Eldon cringes for a brief moment expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised to see his caution was unwarranted this time.
The book appears to be the personal journal of the late Professor, Briefly scouring through the pages you notice a couple entries circled in red ink with arrows pointing toward them.

Dated Ten Years Ago:
The Whispering Way is more than just a cabal of necromancers. I see that now. Undeath is their fountain of youth. Uncovering their motivation does not place me at ease as I thought it might. Their desire to be eternal simply makes them more dangerous.

Dated Two Months Ago:
It is as I had feared. The Way is interested in something here in Ravengro. But what could it be?

Dated One Month Ago:
Whatever the Way seeks, I am now convinced their goal is connected to Harrowstone. In retrospect, I suppose it all makes sense—the stories they tell about the ruins in town are certainly chilling enough. It may be time to investigate the ruins, but with everyone in town already being so worked up about them, I’d rather not let the others know about my curiosity—there’s plenty of folks hereabouts who already think I’m a demonologist or a witch or something. Ignorant fools.

Dated Twenty Days Ago:
It is confirmed. The Way seems quite interested in something—no, strike that—someone who was held in Harrowstone. But who, specifically, is the Way after? I need a list of everyone who died the night of the fire. Everyone. The Temple of Pharasma must have such a list.

Dated Eighteen Days Ago:
I see now just how ill prepared I was when I last set out for the Harrowstone. I am lucky to have returned at all. The ghosts, if indeed they were ghosts (for I did not find it prudent to investigate further) prevented me from transcribing the strange symbols I found etched along the foundation—hopefully on my next visit I will be more prepared. Thankfully, the necessary tools to defend against spirits are already here in Ravengro. I know that the church of Pharasma used to store them in a false crypt in the Restlands at the intersection between Eversleep and the Black Path. I am not certain if the current clergy even know of what their predecessors have hidden down below. If my luck holds, I should be able to slip in and out with a few borrowed items.

Dated Seventeen Days Ago:
Tomorrow evening I return to the prison. It is imperative the Way does not finish. My caution has already cost me too much time. I am not sure what will happen if I am too late, but if my theory is right, the entire town could be at risk. I don’t have time to update my will, so I’ll leave this in the chest where it’ll be sure to be found, should the worst come to pass.

A shutter goes down your spine as you finish the last passage. You realize that these were the last words written by your beloved friend........

Kendra watches as the waddling dwarf makes his way upstairs pausing briefly to make sure he is out of ear shot she interrupts the party as they are reading through the journal.

Now that he has gone to bed, i would like to greatly apologize for Master Burlee's appalling behavior. Several years ago while i was just a young girl; a man worked with my father at the University by the name Thrain Cobblestone. Thrain restored and maintained the several antiquities donated to the university. Father often employed his services when he needed impossible riddles solved, eventually they became close friends. My father and Mr. Cobblestone were investigating some underground ruins in the mountains near Gallowspire when apparently there was a collapse in the tunnel. Mr.Cobblestone sacrificed himself to push father to safety, His entire upper torso was engulfed by the fallen debris. When Father and their other companions finally dug him out of the rubble he was unconscious and barely alive. Despite receiving the best surgeons and clerics in all of Ustalav Thrain awoke with no memory of his past life. He started to refer to himself as Burlee and act in uncharacteristic behaviors. Father believed that the accident had damaged parts of his brain beyond repair and that this new identity would unfortunately be permanent. Father stayed in contact over the years helping him adjust to his new life making sure his needs were provided for. He is still a good man, its just buried deep within. I could really use the help watching after him while you all are in town, I'm sorry for placing this burden on you all but i don't see any other options for me currently

"Hmm. Didn't seem that unusual to me. Why, I, myself, remember--Well, I remember dwarves who ..., well, ... nevermind. Not the time for tall - or stocky - tales." A twinkle rose in Norna's gnomish eyes but then subsided. "I would be glad to help with Burlee; I was raised around dwarves, and not a few of them seem to be suffering from head wounds."

"So, we now know some of why the villagers were so afraid, however misdirected their fears. But what do we know of the 'Whispering Way' and this 'Harrowstone'?"

"And, is there a list here about who died in that fire?"

well Father came off as a peculiar man to many locals, it doesnt surprise me that some of the duller individuals would believe him a liche or necromaner. I have no idea what the whispering way is but I do however know of the harrowstone he is refering to. The harrowstone is the abandoned prison just south of town . The fire was a local tragedy that occured several years ago, a lot of people died, I've heard some of the older folk recount when happened but they seldom talk about it..the place makes most people uneasy...the more superstitious folk claim to here noises from up there during the night..I wont be much help with books either unfortunately, reading old lore is not a hobby that intersts me.

everyone but burlee that has linguistics trained can make a linguistics check to potentially identify the three books. Make 3 different rolls. If you don't have the skill trained you can make a DC 20 straight intelligence test, if that roll is sucessful you may make a linguistics test with a +0 modifier. There will be six total roles if this method is chosen.

While inspecting the books Eldon notices a change in Kendra's voice. When he looks up Eldon sees the young woman burst into tears and fall on her knees. He walks over to her and places a hand on her shoulder. "Kendra... We'll figure out what happened to your father. Shh, come on."

Eldon tries to let Kendra stand, and tries to lead her to a chair or something else where she can sit. He waits a while for Kendra to calm down a bit before he asks her the question that's been bothering him. "Kendra, what exactly happened to your father?"

Lena listens intently. This was the question she had been burning to ask, but didn't think was appropriate to ask until now. yes Kendra, what happened to the prof?

Genesis had been quiet for quite some time. He was rather engrossed in the thoughts in his own mind before Kendra's words stirred something within him. The way she spoke when Harrowstone was brought up, the way she depicted how the Professor had an accident there and how there was so much blood. "Murder?..." he thought, and with his left hand gripped the sheath of his Nodachi with great strength, enough to make his knuckles white.

"Did fate introduce this man to me to follow him? Was I suppose to follow this man and protect him like I did in the past? But I returned to the forests instead..Was that a mistake?" He questioned his actions, he could've possibly saved the Professor, but instead here he is after the mans Funeral.

There was a glaze of anger that seemed to wash over Genesis's eyes. He tried hard to fight the urge to storm the place of the Professor's accident in some blind hope that if it was indeed a murder, the attackers would taste the frigidity of his steel.

The gravity of the situations sits heavy on Heto's shoulders. A death wish was a serious obligation to him, the Professor would have know this well before asking him here. The notion of murder and necromancy added a weight to things that was just on the border of what Heto could deal with. His training, his conditioning, and his faith in Pharasma kicked in just as they should. His breathing slowed a stillness came over him and yet, to any near by it would not be viewed as calm. This may have been a fight of the mind and spirit, but to Heto this was no different than any physical challenge. He listens with a focus that catalogs every detail of the situation to recall it later as needed. He would see this task to the end.

Kendra's emotions could have shaken him from his state, maybe it should have. He was not the one to comfort her though, he knew his goal, if not the path to reach it. We was ready to walk it though.

The last few months Father seemed burdened by some kind of daunting task. he was constantly preoccupied either in his study reading and jotting notes or heading to the University to confer with old colleagues. He would leave frequently but never without telling where he was going and how to contact him. Eightteen days ago, I woke up and he wasn't in his room, the study or anywhere else on the property. I being slightly annoyed headed to town and asked several of the merchants if they had seem him that morning, none had. I waited until the next morning before i contacted the sheriff and a search party was formed. We looked all around the city limits and eventually i made my way by the Harrowstone. I had remembered he was muttering about it one night not that long ago and figured he might of gotten trapped inside the ruins or something. I walked through the gates and saw his lifeless body on the ground. It looked like he was copying some marking from the foundation when a large stone gargoyle perched along top of the building broke free and crushed the left side of his face. It was so horrible, Father Grimburrow ensured me that he didn't suffer....

A gargoyle. A statue not one of the live ones. Maybe an accident but..Perhaps we should look at this "Harrowstone" Lena leans back thinking.
but what about these other books? What are they. Perhaps there is a clue in them

Eldon sits himself down next to Keandra, and places a hand at his chin as he thinks out loud. "Perhaps these colleagues he confered with can tell us more of what the professor was looking for. And the professor's dairy mentioned items that protect against spirits, in the church in Pharasma. It might be a good idea to pick these up, before going after said spirits?"

The four remaining tomes all look to be very old and well read. The knowledge checks reveal a copy things from each book.

1. On Verified Madness: This jet-black book is a treatise on aberrations and other entities found on Golarion.

2. Norna throughout her years of training and worship of Desna easily identifies the tome as a unholy text of Urgathoa entitled Serving your Hunger. Lorrimor’s notations liberally sprinkle the margins with comments that seem nonsensical to you.

3.Eldon notices that the third book is a rough translation of a another unholy text of Zon-Kuthon. Within the front cover you notice a short note: Petros, the text is translated as requested but there are several instances where a exact translation was impossible. I was forced to paraphrase complete sections but I've marked those areas accordingly.

Genesis walks past the chest that the bottom seems to be slightly tilted, with a couple taps he can tell that the chest has a false bottom, Inside revealing a fifth tome! The rich purple cover contains a brass scarab set with a single eye in its center. The Scarab acts as a locking clasp. it is currently locked together firmly.

"What's that?", Eldon asks and walks up to Genesis. He then sees the purple book, and reacts with a slightly sqeaky voice. "Ohhh no, now I'm sure of it! See the purple? See the scarab? See the eye? That's your typical curse, I'm sure of it!"

"If you're going to open it, wait a second!" With some quick touches and mumbled words Eldon casts resistance on everyone in the room.

I just know they'll open it...

"It's cursed, I'm sure of it!", he repeats, still with the same sqeak in his voice.

I passed a perception roll? This is cause for a celebration!!!

Holding the book in his had it intrigued him. He had never seen such an ornate book being from the forests. However Eldons warnings had him dismiss his thoughts about opening it. "It just seems like a very ornate piece of literature. I am no expert on magic so if you see something I don't then maybe you would like to hold it?" Genesis held out the book in one arm, passing it over to whoever felt like taking a look at it."With my strength i could probably pry it open but that would for sure damage something that is probably of great importance.." he would admit as he was in fact curious as to its contents.

The presence of all these unholy books makes Heto nervous. All knowledge is good, especially that of your enemy, the professor taught Heto that. But the care taken with this forbidden knowledge seemed extensive, even for the professor... He knew these would bring danger to those that possessed them, not from curses or the horrid things in the books, but from the desires others have for these books....

The professor said to remain here for one month, visiting his colleagues before then is out of the question. They may be willing to travel here; however, the professor took great pains to hide these tomes, even leaving to chance that we may not have found the last one. I fear the potential dangers from within the tomes themselves pales compared to the threat from those he hid them from. Just knowing it is there likely puts us all in greater danger then before. For that Mistress Kendra; I apologize. As requested by your father I will remain to protect you and this house and then I will take these, and the dangers that follow them, to where the professor instructed; and I will be grateful for the professors other friends who join me in this task. Until then, I feel it may be wisest to not speak of these tomes, pretend we haven't even seen them.

After a brief pause and moment of thought Heto adds... I do however agree that we should continue the professor's investigation. It seems dire indeed. We must be subtle though. A storm is coming, the storm changes you; that is the point of the storm. We must change, for all the rage of the storm and the destruction it wrought; a leaf may ride the winds and land unharmed at the end. We all must be leaves in the wind...

"If anyone killed the professor I won't let that monster get away with it!" Eldon seems to have lost his sqeaky voice as he speaks.

"But... the safety of Kendra is most important. I will not permit anyone or anything to hurt her any more. For the sake of information we might want to investigate that freaky tome, but after we should lock all tomes back in the chest. Also, no one else has to know they're here."
