Whiskeyjack stared at the newcomers and took a swig from his flask. The departure of Arval and Kawrock, and yes even Eldon, had left him a bit morose. He'd been hitting the flask a lot more in the time since they announced their decision. He thought about leaving, himself, but Angradd had quite clearly indicated that there was evil here that needed to be eradicated. So, he stayed. And drank. And stayed. And drank.

And then these friends of Wren had arrived, and it seemed like they might be on their way back under that hellish nightmare of a lake once more. The mere thought of once more willingly submersing himself under all that water drove him to drink again. Only the flask was empty again.

The warpriest sighed and once more completed the ritual he was known for, filling the flask with fresh dwarven firewhiskey. Might as well make nice with the new folks. As long as they didn't talk as much as Wren. That would be...too much like Eldon for him to bear.

Whiskeyjack stepped forward and held out the flask in invitation to the newcomers.

"Name's Whiskeyjack. I' be all I ever remembered o' me past. Still, been good enough these last fifty years or so. Adder, Bronin, and Elena, eh? PLeased t' meetcha. Have yerselfs a drink on me, an' we ken be gettin' this o'er wit'. I' ain't righ', bein' under all tha' water, I be tellin' ye, bu' if'n we be doin' this, ain't no reason t' be goin' in unprepared."

The read-haired dwarf looked down at the ground and blinked bloodshot eyes a few times.

"Wha's wit' th' chicken? Ye be bringin' along a snack fer th' trip? Wren, shu' yer yappin' mouth fer five seconds an' be takin' pity on' this poor cousin of yours. Did ye be stealin' all it's feathers afore we met up?"

.

Horace yells out from the trawler, anchored a short distance from the shore.

"Oh how lovely, new friends! NEW FRIENDS! MY SUBMERSIBLE WORKS! LET ME KNOW WHEN I CAN TAKE YOU BACK TO THE TERN ROCKS SO YOU CAN CLEAR OUT THOSE SKUM AND FIND THAT FELLOW YOU'RE AFTER!"

The party quickly explains what's happened this far:

  • The group pursued a dark rider, bearing the Seasage Effigy statue the Whispering Way stole from Lepidstadt. They don't quite know what the statue is for.
  • The dark rider passed through Thrushmoor and left an assassin.
  • Once in town, the mayor asked them to investigate several disappearances.
  • In doing so, they found out the local church of Gozreh was a cult to Dagon. Strange, slugspawn were attached to the brains of some townsfolk and attacked the group.
  • They pursued the cult to Undiomede House, an abandoned manor of the long-gone noble family. There, the cult leader's head exploded as a horrific monster burst forth. They also battled strange interdimensional creatures.
  • Below the hose, they found the skum had been using women fostered to them for breeding. They had also trapped a strange Colour Without Space - an apparition that had sucked the colour and life force out of most of the women and some of the skum. THey also found evidence the dark rider had been there.
  • A tunnel lead underwater.
  • The source of All These Bad Things should be in the Tern Rocks.
  • To get to the Tern Rocks, which are 200' below the surface. They have used a submersible piloted by Horace.
  • The horse will not fit in the submersible.

Horace has a few water-breathing potions he can pass out for the rest of you. The submersible is barely enough for three people, let alone six. There's no way you can fit the horse in so you'll need to figure that out or leave him behind for now.

Bronin uses his keen eyes and recognizes a few of the bird feathers that Wren has so.... unusually adorned- as in he's never -ever-ever encountered a person that dresses in bird feathers.

But, he's fine with small talk and trying to find common links to bond.
Ah, Wren, I see you have beautifully linked Owlbear feathers and Roc feathers. I recognize them, as back home I created a menagerie and those two were in it, for townspeople to see and understand history.
He says the words :back home: whistfully.

He turns to the two Linas and nods in agreement that having two people with such similar names can be a problem in combat.
You point out a problem with the names. I'm not as comfortable calling someone "Chicken....anything".

Wren notes the regal chicken as it makes his entrance, seeking permission from the waitsperson to make her acquaintance.

"Ooh! Is she friendly? Does she peck?" Wren waits for Elena to give her consent and reading the chicken's body language before allowing the chicken to sniff and peck. "What a beautiful birdie you are. I can tell you're a good birdie!" Wren seems delighted with her new chicken friend, much more than any delight for Elna herself, Bronin, or Jameson. She reaches into her pouch to bring out some seeds, casting them on the ground for the chicken. She smiles her yellow-toothed cracked smile at the chicken. What a delight.

When listens to the discussion while doing a thorough inspection of the chicken and checking to see exactly which seeds PotPie prefers. When others are finished speaking, she will rise to address her adoring fans.

"Well, yes, the underwater parts of this was unpleasant, but we were able make do with the submersible and this..." Wren reaches into her haversack and pulls out a magnificent helm that she hands to Jameson. "Now, I wore this the first time I went down, but I'm happy if you want to wear it. I'll need to get a few things before I am ready to return to the waves."

GM Arachnid Mustache: Can Wren purchase a scroll of Ride the Waves in town? 700 gp. If not that, then a scroll of Touch of the Sea?

"In addition to being underwater, we have some other dangers," Wren says when she has the attention of others. She preens her armor a bit before continuing once she has the attention of others. "Now, I will now explain the other dangers we might face, so choose carefully in your preparations, let alone checking your desire to continue."

Wren will explain the things in this important post.

"...and if we are lucky, we can hit the coral boudoir to catch...blahblahblah...see if that really smells like fish or not...blahblahblah...kinky is when you use the entire chicken...blahblahblah...and that's how you know your tomatoes are ripe. Any questions?"

The chicken picks up the rock and swallows it before scuttling back around to Elena's legs. She picks the chicken up, holding it underneath an arm. "PotPie here wouldn't make for a good meal. He is all skin and bones."

With Wren's coaxing the chicken flaps from Elena's arms and falls to the ground. Seeing some seed Pot Pie waddles over and pecks them from her hands, though the cross-eyed chicken misses most of them. Mostly Elena ignores the creature.

Elena instead listens intently to all of the dangers below, though she stands transfixed at Wren's odd appearance. "So are you one of the working girls? You seem to speak like one."

Looking past at the submersible and Horace, Elena gasps and claps a couple times. "We get to ride in that!? How lovely." She rushes to the shore's edge and looks at the submarine. "In all my life I have never seen anything like this. What do you call it?" She bats her eyes up.

@ GM - does Bronin recognize any of the mosters that Wren describes as Abberations, living plants or Evil outsiders? As a PC, I see the pictures and they are very "tell tale" monsters.
If you feel that Bronin can actually get a useful description from the overexaggerated Wren -- here's a knowledge check. I get Knowledge Dungeoneering +4 (abberations +6). Knowledge Nature Knowledge (nature) covers animals, fey, monstrous humanoids, plants, seasons and cycles, weather, and vermin. that bonus is +9).

Oooookay, Crazy Bird Elf. Strong hearted and strong willed Tavern Girl that kind of reminds me of my first wife - May she have shade and rest.
Fire wielding girl that is bordering on Pyromania Def leppard!
that somehow heard the I instead of an E when someone said Lena/Lina.
I understand why the dwarf drinks!
Well, the dwarf always drinks... I mean dwarves always drink. Nothing has a shorter lifespan than an Alcoholics Annonymous meeting in Dwarventowns.

Lena (Leppard), I get that you pine for the ones that have walked away. I get it. 100%. It is what it is.
As an aside, my Father was a Cleric of Fire. My first horse was named Fire Seeds as an honor to my father.

He takes a second and gives a quick prayer to the loved but departed May Fireseeds have free running in the next world.

To the situation at hand:
Now, I just drew out the cave system as described by Wren. In looking at the locations of the Skum -- your LOVE and ADMIRATION of Fire would work really well if we pulled the Skum together at a chokepoint.

He takes a pause. Looks up and tries to gauge..
So, who was the party leader and helped work on strategy before we arrived?
I must say, that I have extensive experience leading people and offer my skills where needed to this party. I just want to not step on toes or upset the established pecking order.

.

I'm building this on knowledge checks made by the PCs to date as well.

As Bronin offers his skills as a leader and planner, he wracks his brains about Wren's descriptions of the creatures encountered thus far:

He's not familiar with Skum personally, but Wren and Lena know enough about them. They're a race of ancient amphibian creature that look like fish-men who date back to being slaves of the aboleth. Their original name is lost to time, and nowadays they primarily just exist to bother human communities. Notably, all skum are male and must breed with other humanoids to propagate their kind - the offspring slowly turning into skum over time. It is clear the cultists of Dagon had organized the conspiracy with the skum to foster the young children.

However, the notes about bizarre beings are more interesting. They were clustered around Undiomede House, which was built on an ancient druidic circle. Wren knows enough of her stuff to mention the names of a few creatures that they've encountered.

- the slugspawn are tiny creatures that will burrow into the host's brain before growing into an enormous spawning canker and erupting in a grisly display

- Hounds of Tindalos are hunters from beyond the bounds of reality, moving through dimensions in ways incomprehensible to others. Two fo these attacked the group before being driven off.

- The group was attacked by a shantak, an enormous bird-like, slime-encrusted creature which they successfully slew.

- Beneath the house they met the Colour Without Space, a glowing orb of energy that subsisted by draining the colour from living things it encountered.

Bornin is certain these strange creatures hail from the Dark Tapestry, a strange place well beyond any known reality that exists in the black void between the stars.

What they are doing on Golarion, let alone here in this strange situation with the skum is a complete mystery to the group, however.

"Oh yes, that Colour Eater seemed intent on sucking away the beauty from my lovely feathers," Wren bemoans as if there could be no worse fate. "We simply had to kill the creature before it could hurt my feathers! It made me so angry." Wren preens her woven feather armor again as if checking to make sure the colors are still there and still vibrant.

Elena Nethermore wrote:
"So are you one of the working girls? You seem to speak like one."

Wren smiles, flattered. "Oh no, I haven't done any work like that in years. Years and years. But I still have it," Wren's eyes flicker from Bronin to Jameson. "Men still fight over all the time. The previous one...what was his name? Orval, I think? He was so smitten with me. You know how it is, don't you dearie?" Wren smiles her hideous smile at Elena.

After buying and scribing the new scroll, Wren will be ready to return to the submersible in the morning.

Jameson, don't forget the helm. Also, rejiggered Wren's spell list a bit.

.

I also misread your question Bronin. I'll push you guys on tomorrow but in the meantime, here's the results of his knowledge check on the buzzing insectoid creatures.

When Wren mentions the many strange insectoid creatures, they immediately jog Bronin's memory. Mi-go. One of the stranger creatures he's only heard tell about. Extraplanar scientists which are in fact a form of highly advanced fungi. The rumours about them mention insane experiments on the local creatures and unknowable agendas, using strange biological technologies and invasive surgeries. They are highly intelligent.

Annnd push!

While Wren gets her scroll, Horace returns home to produce a couple of basic water breathing potions, including one for Pot Pie once it's clear that Elena has absolutely no intention of leaving her scrawny little chicken behind.

Stabling Patience in town, you all get aboard Horace's trawler the Isinglass and make your way out into Lake Encarthan and the Tern Rocks. The Tern Rocks are around five miles out. As you get closer, it's clear the rocks have a grisly purpose - shackles have been put here, which Elena explains are for the deaths of condemned criminals. A body hangs here, half of it long-since torn out by the creatures of the deep.

Horace pays no mind and turns to the new party members.

"So, the water pressure that far down is enormous! What I've devised is a pump - there's tubing leading back up to the Isinglass which I will continuously fill with air until you give me the signal that you're out. I can stay up here as long as needs be, always something new to learn don't you know! And ah, be careful. It's cramped in there."

With Jameson on the outside with the helm of water breathing, the remainder of you pile into the tiny brass submersible - basically a sphere. It is extremely cramped and uncomfortable, and you become immediately aware of Wren's distinct natural perfume.

A crane pulls you over the edge of the deck, and with a loud splash, releases you, and down you start sinking into the depths. James dives down beside you.

This time, you are not harassed by any enormous squid-like creatures, and you reach the base of Lake Encarthan without issue. The water pressure is, however, enormous. As you step out of the submersible, the sensation of being squeezed to death is intense.

Fort Saves: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 131d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 301d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 251d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 151d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 181d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 121d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 2) = 15
Struggling with the water pressure and getting used to it as best you can, you all use your various water breathing spells or apparatus to push for the northern entrance. There, a wall of force prevents the water from getting in, but with a push, you slowly step into the first room of the underwater tunnels. You are immediately surrounded by breathable, very fresh air for some reason, and the tunnels stretch out before you.

Intricate carvings cover the slimy green and black stone walls of this unlit chamber. The walls and ceiling are damp, and the air reeks with a repulsive, fishy smell.

Whiskeyjack and Bronin take 15 damage from water pressure! Map is now live. Map remains exposed, however it's been half a day since Wren's spell scoured the place. All tokens are last known position.

.

Note, since I dumped you down there, feel free to finish any retroactive planning before you take your first action in the tunnels.

You are right, of course. Let us keep it simple, but have a basic plan

Do we have any idea how to actually pass the wall barrier that keeps the lake water out? It looks simple, but is it really simple? It's be a pretty bad assault if we can't get in and unlesh Lena's Pyromania .
Then I can act as bait and draw out the Skum to a chokepoint. You know, Pour some sugar on me and I'll be bait.
Hopefully I can be protected before hand from fire (I have a first level spell and evasion) so I don't get caught in the hysteria . Then we back out and enter the OTHER cave and attack the plant Animals.

At some point in time, we will be comin' under Fire. So everyone be flexible.

Wren, because of her new magics, does not take the submersible down, but instead enjoys more freedom with a ride the waves spell.

Again she frets what the damage the salty water will do to her beautiful feathered armor, but she knows this part of the mission is important and relents.

When they arrive in the 'normal' air area, Wren will cast overland flight and float 10' up where possible so that she can watch her new charges and admirers from above. She uses prestidigitation to magically dry her feathers, then spends several moments to hand fluff and preen to make herself presentable. She will then cast extended Heroism.

"Okay, dearies, do remember what I said: do *not* get molested by any of the skum down here, especially you PotPie," Wren reminds the party of her enduring wisdom. "Last thing we need to have is some skumchickens running around. The skum are pretty handsy when given the chance, so let's not give it to them."

Wren looks at the carvings, wondering if they have some meaning.

1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 20 + 2 = 29 Know (Arcana/Dungeoneering/Planes/Religion)

Other than that, she nods to Jameson and Bronin, letting them lead on. Not doubt they will want to impress her, as that is the effect she has on younger men.

Jameson listens intently as he looks around the area. Although Wren absolutely identified several skum just a short ways down the tunnel, he doesn't really hear much. Distantly, he can hear a strange buzzing sound.

Wren examines the carvings, and they appear to just be the sort of artwork one would imagine skum enjoy. Religious iconography she can associate with Dagon and then images of bizarre sea life - she recognizes an aboleth, the old masters of the skum in the various designs. But there doesn't seem to be any particularly important meaning in them.

This rugose figure rears up to a man’s height, its large hands bearing far too many twitching fingers.

They turn to the party and attack, reaching out with their impossible hands.

Knowledge Planes DC 23:

These creatures are dimensional shamblers. The dimensional shambler is a vagabond of the realms between realms. With its ability to shift planes, it is no stranger to the weirdest the Great Beyond has to offer, and despite its brutish and unrefined intellect, its knowledge of the planes and the relationships between dimensions is significant indeed.

DC 28:

Dimensional shamblers are masters of planar travel and teleportation. They detest and are resistant to being summoned against their will, and are best harmed by lawful-aligned weapons.

As the air begins to shimmer Elena screams as the trio of horrific creatures reveal themselves. "AAAAHHHH!" She claps her hands over her mouth.

She is so scared that she begins to cry. She whimpers at first as small tears form in her eyes and her bottom lip quivers.

*****

PotPie pecks near her foot and causes her to reflexively kick the chicken.

PotPie soars through the air where he flaps down slowly next to the northern horror. The chicken grabs some of the glowing lichen attached to a rock and eats it. The glowing lichen has a strange effect on PotPie as he grows to the size of a small human!

PotPie will move and use battle form to grow medium as a Standard action.

Elena boots Pot Pie across the room, who quickly turns into a mega-chicken to the complete shock of the party. She then starts to cry, which doesn't seem to have much effect on the shambler.

Lena twists to blast the southern shambler with two bolts of intense fire, rocking it backwards. It continues onwards, reaching out with his awful hands.

Adder rushes to protect the casters, swinging out with his falchion! He connects, and a strange grey ichor starts to ooze out. Wren's spell turns the party into a white-streaked blur as they all burst into action. Bronin's sword swings out faster than the eye can see, opening three huge wounds. Meanwhile, Lena's handles overflow with fire and acid before she thrusts them upon one of the shamblers. Pot Pie squawks mightily but doesn't manage to do much, while Whiskeyjack clonks his enemy solidly. Jameson' attacks are furious and he sends one of the strange, twitching hands flying across the room before slamming his falchion into the dimensional shambler with a killing blow. It shudders violently and vanishes.

The other shamblers do not seem to notice, and continue fighting on. One of them lashes out at Lena, the first attack bouncing from her shield but the second grabs her by the throat. She is lifted off of the ground as the life is choked from her. As Bronin reaches back for a swing, he is also slaashed, and his arm grabbed.
