OK, I'll let my GM friend know we found Burlee and Burlee can find and talk to Pizzmic and see what's up.

Yes, as Burlee says, we have a discussion going. I was pretty hopeless when we didn't have a contact, but now we seem to have several. And, if it won't work with Pizzmic, I have a GM ready to take over (naturally, he and I don't want to step on anyone's toes, taking over a game).

Male Dwarf Level 2 Barbarian

Well, I had a talk with Pizzmic, and he apologizes for his tardiness and inactivity, but he will be no longer able to DM this group, or even participate in others. He's become rather busy as of late, and had to change his schedule around, essentially clipping out the things that weren't as important as others. Unfortunately, this is one of those that were removed from his schedule, so the new DM may come in at any time.

I am sorry to see Pizzmic go, especially since I know that this was something he wanted to do and since I hoped he would be able to continue in some form, such as as a player. I do know how it is to get overwhelmed, though (I should cut back, myself, and probably shouldn't be GMing, but I sure miss it when I do).

Since he doesn't want to play, I would suggest now would be a good time, then, to consider adding another player. Does anyone have a strong opinion about someone specific to add as a player?

We could go with Cleric, though Norna's already a cleric, and not much good at anything else. A Sun and Restoration Domain cleric would probably be more effective, although I have had a lot of luck backing up a fighter-type with the Luck domain.

Besides character type, though, there is also the question of who the player should be.

A friend of mine recently started Pathfinder, or I should say he's about to. Though he's new to Pathfinder he's got some experience RPing on another site. He has a level 1 fighter ready which he'd like to play.

I just asked him, and he'd like to join if he could. I'll help him update his character to level 2 if he does.

Well, that sounds good, Eldon. I think some sort of fighter would be good, and I was thinking that it would be nice if it was some 'friend of the family', so to speak.

My GM friend will introduce himself here shortly (waiting to see that Pizzmic wasn't wanting to come back, and all).

.

Hello everyone! I'm Zoog's friend - he's GM'd me through many games on here so I thought I could return the favour.

I haven't heard a strong 'yes' from the group if you want me to take over, so I'll post my pre-campaign spiel but I won't put things in motion until I'm certain everyone is cool with it. :)

Anyways, campaign spiel:

About Me

Hi! My name is Dave. I've been roleplaying for around 20 years with a variety of systems, but seem to have become entrenched in Pathfinder. I work in project management at a northern Canadian university in a remote rural area, huddled against the cold with my wife and dogs. Although I've been playing Pathfinder for a while, I am still new-ish to the Pathfinder community at large. Never be afraid to correct me if I've been interpreting a rule wrong.

I have run Carrion Crown before up to the Trial of the Beast and so am familiar with the AP.

Combat and Party Tracking

I use google draw with tokens where players can move themselves. I also keep a party tracking sheet and a loot/money tracking sheet on google docs anyone can access.

Game Expectations

- Posting rate is 1/day, 1/weekend. If the posting rate for this group was different -please let me know- as I can adjust.
- I GMPC readily and without mercy, particularly in combat. If you miss a day, I'll take over.
- Please post in the discussion board if you will miss some time.
- If we have less experienced players, please make them feel welcome and give 'em a hand!
- Play your character sheet. Your stats and alignment should be reflected in your personality.
- I break the rules when it is dramatically appropriate. I try to never do so in a way that is unfair to PCs.
- Play your character with the fun of the entire party as your first goal. So inter-party drama, adult themes, or anything like that must be handled with caution.

As my vote/opinion, I am good with GM SpiderBeard, of course.

We could probably scavenge the sheets that Pizzmic has already created. I think another sheet that we would add 'clues' and such notes to would also be helpful, especially in the more investigative parts. (I, at least, found one very useful in the Library of the Lion PFS scenario.)

I like a faster game, as the GM knows from mine, although I would be quickly overwhelmed if all of my slow games suddenly became one a day. Whatever rate people think is good for keeping interest and momentum without causing burnout would be good for me.

Another thing I though we could do is play this in PFS 'campaign mode', which is indistinguishable from the way we are playing it now but has the advantage of also giving the players and the GM some PFS credit. You'd have to sign up for PFS and register a character, but those are easy enough, taking at most a couple of minutes. All you would need for a PFS 'character' is a name to receive the credit.

Male Halfling Bard/10 (HP 83/83 | AC:19 [+2 Buckler] | T:14 | FF:16 [+2 Buckler] | CMB:6 | CMD:19 | Fort:+6 | Ref:+10 | Will:+7 | Fear:+3 | All other saves:+1 | Init:+3 | Perc:+14 | Speed 20)

I also vote for GM SpiderBoard. As far as I'm concerned, welcome aboard Dave! ;) My name's Stephan, and I'm a college student living in the Netherlands. I've started Pathfinder about half a year ago, but had some roleplaying experience prior to that. About two months ago I started GMing PFS scenarios. (Currently GMing 3, a 4th will start in 2 weeks.)

I'd like a pace of at least 1 post a day, and can usually manage more than that. Next week is an exam week for me, so currently my pace is a bit slower.

I like the idea of the tracking sheets: seems easy and effective.

If no one objects about my friend joining in, then I'll let him know he's been accepted in his first ever Pathfinder game :)

------------------------------------------------------------

@Norna: I had already suggested the PFS campaign mode to Pizzmic, and he said he'd look into it. I think he said we'd passed the first part which we could get a reward for, so it'd be nice if we could.

PFS is actually the first part of Pathfinder I told this friend of mine about. His fighter is actually made for PFS, but I'll help him adjust it to an alias suited for this campaign. Then he can choose whether to apply the chronicle sheet to either his PFS version of the fighter, or another PFS character. (IF we're going to do the PFS campaign mode.)

Greetings to the new gm. Hi dave, glad to meet you, I'm terry. Since we are bio-ing I'll give you mine. I am currently between jobs, but am usually studying at university. Ive just completed my masters (phew) in writing and am considering options. I live in Townsville in sunny Queensland, Australia, with my daughter and cat.

I can post 2 or three times a day at the moment, and I have no objections to what you have suggested.

Awesome! I love new players. :D Tell your friend he is welcome to join and have him post on this board so we can get talking. And I lived in the Netherlands a good twenty-four years ago. Loved it. I wish I could remember any Dutch beyond goedendag and vlinder. I miss frikandellen. Or at least I think do. >.>

Since that's three yeses I'll assume permission and email to take over this campaign. I thankfully have all my Carrion Crown stuff set up on my PC from when I ran it on roll20 in terms of tokens, maps, and whatnot. Most of my prep time will be ensuring I can properly pick up from where Pizzmic's excellent gamemastering left off.

If you guys had any special deals, rules exceptions, or other weirdness sorted out with Lord Pizzmic please let me know. I'm very encouraging of players trying to work out any fun ideas they have, but want to be aware of anything before it happens. :D

As for posting rate, I can keep up with whatever rate the players establish. So we'll find our rhythm.

Male Dwarf Level 2 Barbarian

Ah'm Burlay, truly named Gary, and I'm a complete newbie to everything but the roleplaying aspect. I am rather seasoned to the entirety of roleplaying (probably not in your standards, considering 20 years is 5/6's of my life D:) I'm studying medical for oncology and work at a bank to make ends meet.

Now, Burlee is a rather crass characters with no bonds held. I dunno if you're reading the story we've done so far, but there's been some experiences that are at least memorable to me. Other than that rather droll introductory, welcome to this...board, and...have fun controlling our virtual lives!

My name, again, is Matt and I live just south of Portland, Oregon ("you'll find us between Seattle and California").

I played AD&D back about 1980 (when I was 10...), then mostly Call of Cthulhu and various strategy games like Star Fleet Battles through high school and college, falling out of the hobby when my gaming friends scattered across the country after college. I played a little 3.5 for a little while, then took another half-decade break before getting into PF. I was happy to find the boards and PFS for online play since, as a stay-at-home dad currently, I don't have 6-hour blocks of time anymore. (My wife, by the way, is now 40%+ a nurse, looking to go into pediatrics or pediatric oncology.)

I met Dave when I 'rescued' the First Steps Part II game he was in where the GM had vanished. He plays a character, Storn, who would likely get along very well with Burlee. (I don't think I knew his name was Dave, however, until now.)

.

Hi Gary. Burlee is a hoot. I'm excited to work with you guys. And RP comes in many forms, so if you're new to tabletops I hope you're having fun.
And Matt is right, I think Storn and Burlee are BFFs in another life.

Also, I see Heto's last post was a request for contact if things get going again. Can someone who knows him let him know? Thanks.

As I settle in more, a few more points:

- We're bringing what looks like 6 people to a 4 person game. As such, I'm going to increase encounter difficulty and rewards by 50% by adding more baddies, or using advanced templates. But that also means more loot.

- I believe that the trust system (i.e. how much Ravengro likes you) is a little broken because it doesn't actually offer enough points for some of the rewards. So I didn't use it last game. However you are using it now, so I'll keep it going but will read up on what other GMs have done with it.

- Levels will be awarded at milestone points in the game, rather than experience per encounter. Since I am going to tweak a lot of the encounters, tracking experience becomes more hassle than its worth.

GM, you do miss frikandellen. I assure you, you do. Absolutely. No doubt about it :)

So far I haven't experienced much difficulty in this game, but I've continuously told myself I'd be in for it once all of the combat starts. A high Diplomacy modifier doesn't save you from every situation >.<

I sent my friend an email telling him he's welcome to join, and gave him a link to this thread. I expect he'll pop up and say hello today or tomorrow. (He's a bit busy today.)

I never think that four-person groups provide the breadth of skills, classes, and races to make things work well or be that interesting. Beyond just fighter, cleric, magic-user, thief - which covers a lot of bases - where's the ranger and the paladin and the monk? (Old school terms and thinking.)

I don't know about Carrion Crown, but Thornkeep was also a 'four person' scenario that was typically light on most of the encounters and then had a BBEG which could have used a 12- or 16-person group.

Netherlands connection: I wrote a 73-page report on it in the 7th grade (age 13) - all handwritten, in ink since it was in Ye Olden Times. I've always wanted to live there since.

What is it that attracts you to the Netherlands?

Personally I don't find the Netherlands to be that great, but that's mainly because I prefer landscapes that include mountains and huge forests. We don't have mountains, and the area I live in has no real forests. The east side of the country does have forests and I'd prefer living there over my current location.

(People often want what they don't have? xD )

.

Matt - I've been buffing the encounters in my WoTR game and they seem to be just about right. However, Haunting of Harrowstone has some really nasty encounters. I'll play it by ear as the party progresses.

Stephan - Hehe, well you'd love it out here. I'm in the middle of the largest forest on the planet and mountains are a short drive. Moose and bear are occasional visitors to my yard. There is also a foot of snow outside. >.<

I loved the Netherlands because it was so different, honestly. The towns were five minutes away instead of an hour and all had a great deal of character. I was 11 years old at the time and so the character of the residents and the day to day lives and all that were worlds apart from what I knew. I lived a village near Maastricht and so also really enjoyed how different accents got if you drove for a half an hour. In Canada two towns five hours apart from each other will be identical, culturally. Same politics, same accent, same food, same attitudes.

.

All right, I've been given the keys to the campaign. Please be patient as I do some redecorating. If all goes well, I'd like to get going again come Tuesday.

Canada's a beautiful country. The only thing I don't like is how it can get very cold. Though if there's a place I can ski that'll fully make up for it :)

I have a thing for etymology, so I too like how dialects and accents vary greatly between places in the Netherlands. The variety in languages is something I find interesting about Europe in general. I also like the history of this continent very much, and the remains of it.

I'm looking forward to Tuesday! ;)

The Portland, Oregon, area is nice. A reasonably-sized city. Not too hot, not too cold. The mountains and the ocean are both about 90 minutes away.

It's rainy, gray, and overcast through much of the winter, though, which many will find depressing.

Hey Arval! Pleased to meet you. I'll offer corrections and advice. I have very few corrections and loads of advice. The advice you can take or leave as you wish, after all - this is your character and your vision.

Corrections:

- You need to take a Campaign Trait in the place of one of the traits you selected. You can review the traits in the free player's guide. The campaign trait ties your storyline to that of the game.

- What are you taking your exotic weapon proficiency in?

- It looks like bastard sword. Your offence section shows you using a battle axe or warhammer. So that should have your bastard sword there.

- Make sure to add your base attack bonus to your bonus to hit! So it should read like this:

Bastard Sword [one-handed] 1d20+5 [+2 BAB, +3 Str) (19x2)

Advice:

- The 'fleet' feat only works when you wear light or no armour so you won't be able to use it. Luckily, I have an advised replacement.

- I'd tweak the feat choice. When using a shield, I recommend you take Two Weapon Fighting and Improved Shield Bash, and then switch to a light spiked shield.

Two Weapon Fighting - Take a -2 to hit, and attack with sword and shield in the same round.

Improved Shield Bash - When attacking with your shield, you don't lose your AC bonus.

Light spiked shield - Two weapon fighting wants you to have a light weapon in your off hand without taking massive penalties.

- Spend some of that gold! A masterwork bastard sword would look nice on this build. It costs an extra 300 gold and you get a +1 to hit.

- Your background about you defend the weak doesn't match your alignment of Chaotic Neutral. CN is sort of supreme selfishness. He strikes me as CG or NG.

Shadow Lodge

Problem with the choice above is you need a dex of 18 for improved two weapon if he is taking that line. How about the following feats
weapon focus bastard sword
Exotic weapon bastard sword
shield focus
power attack

that gives a +1 to hit, +1 to ac and one handed bastard sword use. The power attack gives a -1 to hit, and +2 to damage. Drop the shield spiikes.

Get master work sword and armor and shield. That will drop the armor check penalty by 2, and give a plus 1 to hit

MW bastard sword +5 1d10 + 3
Power attack +4 1d10 + 5

Just a suggestion

Fate smiled on you and Professor Lorrimor one day in the not so distant past. Through a matter of pure chance, you were in a position to save the late scholar’s life and did so. His gratitude was effusive, and he promised that he would never forget you. You are unsure of the nature of the summons in his will, but believe he may have listed you as a possible heir in thanks for saving him from an untimely demise.

Should be a part of your character's history. So you met Lorrimor, saved him, became besties or you never saw him again. Whichever you think is best. Make up whatever you saved him from - assassins, undead, cultists, choking on a pretzel - it's all good. Working the trait in will help tie you to the campaign a little better. Then you're ready!

Hi Arval,

Welcome to the game!

I also have a sword and shield fighter in another game (well, Paladin), and I'm committed to it for character reasons, but people seem to advise against it as being difficult to optimize. I think one reason is that Str damage and Power Attack work better with two-handed weapons. (It looks, though, like you are interested in a well-rounded character design than min-maxing and such, so it probably will be less of an issue to you.)

~~ Matt

@GM, on the Campaign traits note: it's probably a good campaign design to have traits that tie the characters better to the setting, but Pizzmic allowed some other traits from basic sources. I took Indomitable Faith and Starchild (Desna) as seeming to fit the character.

Traits:
Indomitable Faith You were born in a region where your faith was not popular, yet you never abandoned it. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves as a result.
Starchild (Desna) Desna sensed your love of travel and promised you would always be able to find your way home. You can automatically determine where true north is. You gain a +4 trait bonus on Survival checks to avoid becoming lost.

I could switch from Starchild (Desna), especially, since it is just essentially flavor.

Hey!

Thanks for the welcome. I have thought of a two handed weapon but it's not really my style. I always rather have sword and shield or two handed. And this time I was in the mood for the sword and shield. But i might consider it for future characters as a better build.

Not having introduced myself properly, now looks like a good time. I am Dennis, also from the Netherlands. I'm new to pathfinder but very excited to give it a go. And yes Dave... Frikandellen... after tasting them you cannot not miss them!

Greets,

Dennis

.

Oh! Well I won't require existing characters to change anything. If you want to, you're free to but there's no requirement on my part.

Nice to meet you Dennis. I'm certain Stephan will help you out a lot, but also as GM my job is to make sure everyone knows and is comfortable with the rules. Please don't hesitate to ask questions.

This group is composed of people from places I want to visit. I've always wanted to go to Oregon and Australia, and now I need to go back to the Netherlands. For the uninitiated, frikadellen are a caseless, deep-fried sausage made from horrific mystery meats. I imagine they are perfect when staggering home from the bar.

Anyways, I actually lost all of my old tokens for this game when I formatted so I've been rebuilding those. The grid is going to align strangely on the maps because I had to rescale the maps to fit 5' per square and Paizo's maps don't completely line up with an overlaid grid.

I won't require any posts until Tuesday, but if I hear from Heto before that I will get the gameplay thread going again so people can do some roleplay and we can get into the swing of things.

So Heto has been contacted? Does anyone have RL information for him, since he might not check the Paizo site regularly without a game in progress?

Edit: BTW, I decided to go for the campaign trait, Chance Savior (giving +2 on initiative rolls) since Norna's faith, domains, and gnomish traits are all about luck. I haven't thought of the story behind it yet - something suitably implausible - but will try to have Norna remember/imagine it somewhere along the line.

Just a note arval
your flat footed AC is one higher I think. You didn't include shield focus

your bastard sword damage one handed looks high. Without power attack you have plus three damage. Two handed damage is 1d10 plus 4. Your sheet seems to confuses attack with damage.

I /KINDA/ have ir contact with Heto. I can see what the monk is doing these days.

It might be worthwhile if we each PM the GM a email address or something.

@Vladlena

You are right, FF is higher it is 19 instead of 17. Missed 1 armor point and the shield focus... No idea why.

It was purely the attack roll that was listed, i've made some adjustments so the damage and attack rolls are listed :) Maybe this makes things clearer?

Thanks for the advice!

Okay, gameplay will be up and running tomorrow. I'll GMPC Heto for a week. If we do not hear from him by then, we can assume he's moved on.
