Myrdon sighs as he inspects Aegis, pleased at least that it has survived. Pulling out a wand, he works to restore his companion, a task more important to him than speaking to the Princess.

Marta looks at Fendhal with surprise, but then nods knowingly.

"I'm sorry your majesty. I suppose my ally was trying to spare you the bad news, but your brother is quite dead after a regrettable encounter with some of Hestram's undead minions. Of course we will do our best to deliver you safely back to the city. But one has to wonder why you were brought here. Was it a diversion to lead us away from the city, or is there something here we need to investigate before returning. That entrance over there. What is it to?"

Luisila dismisses the invisivility purge and walks to within about 10’ of the pit.

She calls down to her captives. “You pair hear that? Marta is your god now. Are you going to play nice if I let you out?”

“If not I can drive the pit around the desert floor dropping boulders and old statues on top of you. Might be kinda fun. I never did get to drop a harpsichord on Eddington Keel’s hounds.”

Assuming they respond in the affirmative, Luisila dismisses the pit and channels to heal everyone.

Marta visibly cringes when Luisilla calls her a god and sends out a quick prayer of apology on her behalf to Ragathiel.

"Not a god, Luisilla, nor a goddess, nor even a demi-god. And THAT was not Hestram. I do not think we need to deceive these deluded folks, enlightenment is our best path forward. Truth is our ally here."

Marta eyes the entrance.

"We should investigate what is in there. What do you know about this place!", she barks at the guards.

Fendahl looks from Vladek to the huge Kirrah and nods.

”The false Hestram wasted valuable time and resources. But at least the princess is safe. “

Looking back to the ship with a heavy sigh.

”Should we attempt to pilot the ship back or can we teleport.“


The Midnight Mirror

Marta and Vladek recognize the way "Hestram" ended as the result of destroying a simulacrum. Clearly someone created a duplicate of Adril and that is what has been ruling here on Akiton. Whether the original Hestram was here, and left the duplicate in his place, or whether it was the duplicate all along, there is no way to tell.

The giant statue turns out to be just a statue, with no hidden entrances. Your see nothing special about it; it was probably just a random feature in the desert when they abandoned ship. IE, it was on the flip-mat and it's presence had to be explained. ;-)

The Starsword turns out to be enchanted to be particularly deadly when facing multiple foes, as well as delivering a powerful shock. +1 mighty cleaving shock longsword

To Luisila's request, she merely looks confused. "What Society do you speak of, and what carving? I'm afraid you have me at a distinct disadvantage."

Hearing the news about her brother, Verish says, "It pains me to hear of his death, but at least he died ridding this world of the pretender and rescuing me. Let us return to Arl, and I will reward you for your service."

The three remaining of Adril's guards swear their fealty to you and to Verrish, and you divide onto the two ships to fly back to the capital city.

Continue with your conversation with Verrish; we will assume it happens as you return to Arl. You will also have the remainder of the day to recover and rest overnight.

"Is a teleport safe? I thought you needed to know a place well to do that. I could be wrong though. Maybe that's the recall spell some of the better clerics can do. If it's safe it only makes sense to use it and leave the ships here. After we search them, of course."

Marta will not leave until both ships have been searched from stern to bow, port to starboard.

"And then there is the matter of the deceased. They should be given a proper burial and we need to make sure none of them have come back or will come back as undead."

Luisila’s gaze falls on the giant craft. “If nothing else they have value as a part of Queen Verish’s Royal Navy.”

“Forgive me, Your Highness.” Luisila smiles at Arl’s new Thurokess. “‘The Society’ is the organization that employs us. Our current mission is to bring Adril Hestram to justice. He is a renegade member of our outfit, who once held a senior leadership position.”

“As far as agendas go, returning Hestram to answer for his crimes on Golarion was our only goal here on Akiton. Oh, except for the stone tablet supposedly mounted somewhere in the Crimson Forum.”

She *shrugs* “Presumably it also has some value to the Society.”

The Midnight Mirror

Because of the long time frames of PbP, we are starting to loop as you ask questions that have already been asked but you've forgotten. Both Verrish and Kol Voth described the people he arrived with, and you recognize them as the Ulfen you fought in the arena and the Irriseni witch from the ship. ;-)

It seems like everyone has said what they intend to, so I'll just wrap up here.

You fly the ships back to Arl, where Verrish announces the news of the death of her brother and of Adril. She takes the throne and says she will be assembiling a new council. She gifts the Starsword to the you in thanks for your help, and declares to the people of Arl that the time has come for them to shrug off the coarse mantle of their superstitious barbarian ways and become a civilized people. Many in Arl grumble about this change, but most recognize that they are better off now than in the city’s short time under "the Beast".

A celebration is held, and you are all given places of honor. That night, you are given a place to sleep and prepare for your return to Golarion.

Verrish sends someone with Luisila to search for the stone tablet she mentioned. It is clearly old and valuable, and Verrish offers to have someone negotiate with the Society for it. Sadly, the faction mission can only be satisfied by *stealing* it. Season 1 faction missions weren't always the nicest.

As you are finishing breakfast the next morning and preparing to return through the portal, Eliza arrives. She has come through the portal with dire tidings: Adril Hestram is in the Grand Lodge of Absalom and his assault is underway. If the PCs don’t come with her immediately, the future of the Society may very well be no future at all.

Eyes of the Ten, Part 4

The glowing red portal from Akiton to the Maze of the Open Road on distant Golarion rises from the pinnacle of the towering pyramid ahead, as howling, icy winds tear across the red sands, whipping them into an angry, biting torrent. Venture-Captain Eliza Petulengro rushes up the structure, turning back only briefly to ensure that she’s being followed. Reaching the top of the massive structure, she turns to speak, but pauses for a moment to think. Her voice wavers with a twinge of desperation and fear..

“I… we… We will never catch up to Adril if we go back via the Maze. He’s already in Skyreach.”

Slowly, her pained expression surrenders to resolve. “I’m going to rift the portal. It’s the only way.”

She turns back to you and explains, "This is an extremely risky technique of tearing a “rift” in a portal, temporarily damaging it with teleportation magic such that individuals can slip in between dimensions connected to the portal and exit almost anywhere between the two connecting points. Usually it’s used to make a stop in between two portal points, but I should able to use the same technique to bypass the Maze and pry our way directly into Skyreach."

“I’m going to attempt to tear a rift into the portal chamber at Skyreach. It’s sort of foyer in the tower’s upper chambers— those reserved only for the use of the Ten and their most trusted aides. It should be the easiest chamber to access, as it doesn’t actually exist in Skyreach. It’s more of a hub connected to several dimensional corridors that run through the Grand Lodge. If and when we arrive, we shall be partially insubstantial. The Decemvirate uses this property to keep their identities obscured from one another when exiting and entering their private chambers. While the Decemvirate can enter and leave the chamber at will, we shall be visitors. In order to enter, each of us needs an envoy. Within the chamber stands a basin containing a small number of special ioun stones called eraminho stones. These stones act as vessels for the souls of the Society’s most trusted protectors, some even former members of the Decemvirate. By activating these stones, we can connect with the spirits to gain access to the inner chambers."

"Once inside, we should seek out the envoy rooms first. These are chambers set aside to allow communication with the various groups and factions that are associated with the Society. We can then make contact with whatever allies of the Society we each may have outside the Ten themselves. These rooms are the only neutral rooms within the upper tower, so even if Adril seizes command of Skyreach, the envoy rooms will remain somewhat of a blind-spot. After that, we need to locate Venture-Captain Shemis and protect her at all costs."

"Make your preparations quickly!"

You now have no more than a few rounds to prepare yourselves before she begins the spell.

Marta begins her day as she always does, and enhances her weapons. She also asks Vladek to refresh the Mage Armor as she has done every day they have travelled together.

Marta leaps into action even as she asks and casts extended heroism on herself. She would also like to do the trade off of Heroism on Kirrah for Barkskin on Marta.

"Fendhal, shall we swap spells again? Barkskin for Heroism?"

Having already cast endure elements to help manage conditions on the Red Planet, a toasty Luisila rushes after VC Eliza.

Yeah, we need to hurry because you sent us on a wild goose chase to another planet! Far out.

Most of the info regarding the portal ‘rift’ goes over the cleric’s head. However, she is well-versed in the phrase ‘dangerous but necessary’ and stands runs ready to comply.

“VC Shemis is the Decemvirate member last on Hestram’s list, right VC Petulengro?”

Luisila finds herself rapt by the description of the Decemvirate’s antechambers, and is looking forward to using the facilities to help coordinate the counterattack on the renegade venture-captain.

Eliza scowls as she begins her spell. "At this point, I would hardly guess. There should only be the Ten and their invited guests, but given the loss of so many of their number and Hestram's infiltration, who knows? Be ready for anything."

She stops speaking and concentrates on her spell. As she casts, the portal opens, but then changes color to a pitch black. An inhuman shrieking emanates from the rift. Eliza tries to yell something as she steps into the rift, but her message is wholly unintelligible, overpowered by the shrieking of the void. Seconds later she vanishes into the blackness.

With a shared glance among you, you step in one by one.

The darkness thins only slightly, ebbing into a deep, blackish-purple twilight. The surrounding space appears without clear definition or form. Distance is difficult to judge, though there appears to be some sort of a perimeter marked by darker, shadowed arches. In the northernmost point in the chamber sits a small stone column supporting a basin filled with a pale, translucent gas.

As more and more figures appear in the chamber, you hear one and then another low moaning sound, as if creatures are in distress or pain. You can't identify where the sounds are coming from, or even what sort of creature might be making them.

Please do not post any public messages yet, but I wanted to let you know that every player has had at least one chance to act, and that everyone is aware of the strange sounds. Next player has been PMed!

Luisila surveys the shadowy field and takes a deep breath. “I’m almost certain the entity directly to the south of me is either Kirrah or Aegis, and I think it’s Kirrah.”

“I don’t have enough knowledge of arcana to know if you can spin one of the font ioun stones around a non-sentient creature’s head for them or not? Do you know?”

“I’m also sure the entity 15’ to the west, then 5’ to the south is Vladek. My next move was going to be moving close enough to Vlad, so I could offer him a font ioun stone.”

“I suspect the entity to the south-west of Fendahl is a celestial cat summoned by either Fendahl or Myrdon.”

“I believe the prone creature is a dead enemy two-weapon fighter type.”

“I don’t know who the southern-most entity or the entity directly to my west is. If anyone is reasonably certain, please let us all know.”
