Oh, I missed that. Once again, the Norns' weaving snags, and Eindred's fate goes slightly differently...
Hakon repost:

Halon continued his futile assault against the seemingly-immortal skeleton near him, nicking it slightly with his shield this time, and wondering if Eindrid could find a way to make this part of the fight sound more heroic when they retold it all around a fire someday, and then stepped slightly closer to the big bad.

I guess the Norns have spoken...
Eydis |
Eydis laughed mockingly. "Compared to the soulless creations that you have called to fight? Ones we have slayed with contempt? In Wotan's Gaze I shall show you what we warriors of this age can do."
With a moment of concentration and a word of prayer, Eydis vanished from where the skeletons had surrounded her, and flanked the creature with Eindrid. Roksper flashed, charged with far more magic than usual.
Roksper: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 2 = 24

GM Rednal |
Yeah, they have spoken. o wo; I can't fairly twist your wyrd any more than that.
Hakon managed to bludgeon a skeleton, but not hard enough to make it fall, even as Eindrid tried - and failed - to slash at the newcomer. Meanwhile, Eydis vanished from where she'd been and joined the battle against the figure, driving her Roksper into his body. That wasn't nearly enough to bring him down, though, and he whirled around before stabbing out at her sides with the icy claws on both of his hands.
Claw (Eydis): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Claw (Eydis): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23 for Damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 plus Cold Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Fort DC 16 vs Glaciate: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Intense cold started to spread from where he'd struck Eydis, but she barely managed to throw it off before it could spread further. Meanwhile, the skeletons were swarming into position...
Incidentally, Eindrid, feel free to just move your token(s) and put an arrow going from where they were, rather than where they're going to. ^^

And this time, one of them actually landed a hit on Hakon.
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
Okay! Let's see if I can ride on those high rolls! Eindrid post first this time:
Taking advantage of Eydis's distraction, Eindrid thrust forward with his sword, trying to strike a weak point on the skeleton's spine.
Longsword Attack, +precise strike, challenge: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28 [ooc](additional +2 if Eydis moves to flank? +swift action to add level to damage twice[/dice]

Bonus Crit Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 4 = 10
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
Hakon, meanwhile, moved forward, and took one slower, more careful strike at the skeleton between him and Eindrid.
Sword, Flanking: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 2 + (4) + (4, 3) = 19
Eydis |
I'm sorry, the game didn't show as having updated. Mea culpa.
Gasping as the frost crawled across her skin, Eydis' breath escaped in a small, icy cloud of shock. But this was not enough to defeat Eydis Batia, and she forced her limbs to work against the cold, shrug off the damage that had been inflicted. "We are Northlanders! Bring your cold, and we shall laugh."
Roksper: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 2 = 24

Destruction (Full): 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6) = 12
Flanking
GM Rednal |
Hakon was still having a certain amount of trouble - but Eindrid managed a heavy blow, and Eydis followed it up with a strike of her own. Spitting out a curse - and clearly quite wounded - the apparent leader of the skeletons withdrew around Eindrid, sitting on his throne once again. As he did so, a barrier appeared around it... and the throne shot upwards, merging with the ceiling and moving towards what looked like the central tower. As it did so, you could see the skeleton's body somehow repairing itself, as if its cursed unlife was mocking what you'd done to it.
...
This sort of thing was one of the many reasons people despised the undead. They were never dead when they should have been. On the bright side? There were only a few normal skeletons left, and dispatching them was the work of just a few moments now that they were no longer spawning in ridiculous numbers.
Eydis |
"Coward!" Eydis screamed as she shattered another Skeleton with her spear. "Flee as you will, we will find you!"
Turning to the others, Eydis leaned on her spear for a moment. "Should we heal and pursue him now? Are you well enough to continue?" She cast a healing spell on herself as she waited for the answers.
Life Sphere: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (8, 3, 3) + 8 = 22
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
So uh... flanking means he needs to 5' step + withdraw, but Step Up negates that for Eindrid, and I get an AoO. I don't want to derail the big climactic battle too much, so I'll try *something* not too derailing but only if the GM signs off on it.
AoO Disarm: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 + 2 = 25
"Nithing!" Eindrid shouted as the skeletal king tried to wriggle away. "If you laid down your sword..." and then, his blade catching on the other, tried to twist it from the skeleton's grasp "Or we well!"
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
Second post, to trigger GM notice...
"I'm still bleeding..." Eindrid pointed out to Eydis, motioning to where the skeleton had cut him.
Eydis |
Eydis nodded, and gestured with an intreaty to Wotan. Eyes flashed and her hair drifted in the breeze as healing energies surrounded Eindred.
Life Sphere: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (5, 6, 8) + 8 = 27
Hakon Grunson |
Hakon leans on the cross guard of his blade, breathing heavily from his exertions.
"We showed him the mettle of the warriors of this age," he says wryly to the other two. "Now to finish the job."
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
After he was healed, Eindrid stabbed each one of the remaining tapestries in the room, for good measure.
Eydis |
Helping to destroy the tapestries, Eydis frowned and then gestured. "Let us head back up and see if we can track this creature to whatever bolt hole it hides itself in." Gathering herself, she headed to the nearest way up.
Head up the western staircase so we can see the area we never visited, then straight to the northern tower?
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
"Hold, Eydis," Eindrid called out. "Let's do this carefully. The king's leaving a mark on the world."
Casting Divine Alignment. It slows me down a bit, but lets me detect lingering undead auras (at the big bad's strength, I'm guessing for 1d6 minutes after he passes). Not super useful, but probably a worthwhile precaution
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
Holding onto the spell, Eindrid walked out of the chamber, suggesting the others walk with him towards the obvious unexplored tower.
Hakon Grunson |
Hakon follows grimly behind the others.
GM Rednal |
As you move to the stairs of the western tower and start to ascend them, a problem immediately presents itself - it's not visible from below, but the upper part of the stairway is choked by ice and rubble. It's probably something you could bypass with enough time and effort, but there's no telling what that undead is up to while not being watched...
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
Ugh, and I'm mostly out of dailies.
Eindrid drew his bow as he walked with Eydis, keeping an eye out for traps or archers along the outdoor paths.
GM Rednal |
Now that you knew where you were going, it didn't take you very long to hurry around to the other side and move up through the stairs, heading towards the central walkway. You could hear something from inside the tower - if there was anything you wanted to do before bursting the door down and getting rid of the undead monstrosity calling this place home, now was probably a good time for that.
Eydis |
Pausing, Eydis looked at the doors. The creature behind them likely qualified as an evil. She glanced at all of their weapons. "Perhaps I can enhance our weapons, to better deal with the monster that awaits." Raising her Holy Symbol, she intoned, "Wotan, God of War and Magic, bring your blessings on the weapons here. Enchant them with your power, so we may do most glorious battle with the creature who fled honourable combat. Turn your gaze upon us, Grandfather of our People, and watch as we fight for our people and in the name of our Gods against this being that defiles the order of things."
One after the other, she touched the weapons present, and the weapons began to shimmer with a faint light, rippling power flickering across the metal, as Wotan blessed them with the power to destroy the undead before them.
Glancing at the others to see when they were done preparing, Eydis moved to the entrance and moved to enter as soon as the others were ready to head through.
Good Blessing on everyone who wants it - 1d6 Holy Damage, and acounts as Good for the purpose of bypassing DR.
Hakon Grunson |
Hakon bows his head reverently as Eydis incants her blessing, and then kisses his blade before giving the warpriestess a nod.
"Let us put an end to this evil."
So saying, he falls into a crouch, ready to move through the door the moment it opens and spill unhallowed battledew.
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
"If I raised any more blessings today, I do not know if anyone is left to listen; thank you for that," Eindrid added, as he follows.
GM Rednal |
As the three of you opened the door and darted inside, your foe raised one hand and horrid, icy cold spewed out of it in a wide cone. "Oh, I am going to enjoy your deaths." he said.

Eydis |
Eydis grunted as the cold hits her, but flickers away suddenly, ending up behind the creature. "Bold words," she hissed, pulling back her spear to strike, "Who flees in the sight of Gods and Mortals alike." The spear plunged forwards, energies or magic and divine destruction swirling around the blade.

Eindrið Lawspeaker |
As the spell hit, Eindrid was already moving forward, spear out. "There is nothing left for you to enjoy, Draugr Jarl of Nithing," he spat at the skeleton man, "Though we'd hear your death words, if you'd like to tell of this forgotten place before it's gone."

The warrior smoothly dodged each of the blows sent his way, turning them aside with frost-covered claw. "Jarl? Oh, you ignorant little fools... I am a Prince!" With that, he stabbed out at Eindrid with both of his claws, clearly aiming to take revenge for the insult.

As he struck out, bone-numbing chill spread through Eindrid's body... although he did, somewhat narrowly, manage to shake it off.

"Prince?" Eydis muttered as she attacked, ""Oh what? A dead hall? Dead servants? Dead are those who loved you, and you in turn loved. Join them in the next realm, and know what peace such as you can find."

Einarid shook his head. "Your robes seemed fine enough that 'jarl' felt an appropriate courtesy. Clearly, though, you're nothing but an outlaw." Whirling to the side, he dodged one claw, before the other caught him, but he moved back into place and struck back with his sword.

Eydis and Hakon managed to land their blows - rather narrowly, but a hit was a hit and it was definitely enough to damage the undead. He lashed out at Eydis a moment later, plunging his cursed claws towards her side. "Ignorant little girl. You know nothing at all of what awaits." he growled.
Claw (Eydis): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

Of course, all the anger in the world wasn't helping him land blows...

Eydis smiled. "I know all I need to. I have faith in my God. You have lost yours, and only then do you need to fear what comes next." She struck out again.

I think you have an extra +4 in there, Eindrid...? In this case, it doesn't actually make a difference - with literally no room to spare, I might add - but I'm not sure where the fourth is from. +4 from normal attack I get. Another one from Precise Strike, and spending a Panache Point to add it again I get, but that's only three. What's the last from?
Eindrid's precise strike and Hakon's heavy blow were both accurate strikes... and, perhaps more importantly, they were heavy strikes, and just heavy enough to tear the undead prince apart. As his body fell, a tremor ran through the glacier and the palace... and a hunk of ice as big as the ship you'd arrived on crashed down from the cliffs and through the far side of the chamber, smashing it to pieces.
The shaking didn't stop, though. If anything, it was getting worse.
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
It came from a typo. I accidentally forgot that I can't power attack and added in an extra +4 for some reason. Whoops! I'll try to keep an eye on those.
"Umm..." Eindrid looked around quickly, then grabbed the body of the skeletal lord, dragging him by the torso, as he walked towards the door. "This thing may have a token we'll need to escape this place. Anyone else have ideas?"
Eydis |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Dagnabit, load bearing boss!
Helping Eindrid to pick the corpse up, Eydis said, "Two. If the entrance is blocked, we may yet escape via that tunnel in the lower levels, the one the beast dug out onto the ice. Secondly, we run."
Hakon Grunson |
Hakon cleans the filth from Wotan's blade, then flinches as the first huge chunk of ice comes barreling through the walls.
"Agreed!" he cries out. "Run!"
Eydis |
Eydis headed for the main entrance by which they'd entered. If it was blocked already she would head for the basement, and the tunnel leading out.
Eindrið Lawspeaker |
Eindrid dropped the corpse—but grabbed its sword—and followed Eydis towards the entrance quickly.
Hakon Grunson |
Hakon continued to follow after Eydis, running as quickly as he could.
