"Sir." Dulae snapped a solute to the lieutenant before he departs, before letter her gaze wander over the room. Some of them would be handy to have along... Dulae's gaze lingers a bit on the muscular woman, her mind quickly thinking of how she would handle such an obviously strong opponent, before scanning the rest of the civilians. Some not so much. Though... She watched the young man floating the coin for a moment, trying to figure out what type of magic he was using...

Dulae turned her attention to the soldier next to her. "Afternoon, private. Sergeant Dulae, retired." She says softly, stepping a little closer to him so as not to disturb the rest of the room with the conversation. "Busy day?"

Henri smiles and leans forward, one arm still on Alaina's shoulder, and the other elbow on the bar, hand clutching her refilled ale. "Well hit me with it, baby. I'm just here for a job, this story sounds way more interesting than some missing guards."

Dulae:

The private smiles but makes no move to salute her and says, "Pleasure to meet you, sergeant. Private Zahan."

He eyes the room of waiting civilians and says softly to her, "You've no idea. The southern contingent finally sees some action and I'm here babysitting the would-be volunteers."

"Well you know what they say: everyone takes a dump, but only some of us get handed a shovel." She glances around before leaning a little closer, and saying even more softly. "I've seen a bit of action myself, and trust me not every kind is something you want to get mixed up in. You must have heard a lot around here; whats the situation?"

"I'm looking for a man named Marcus. He was last seen here about five years ago," Taking a swig of her drink, Alaina went on, "I know that doesn't seem long, but I'm getting to that." She finished her drink and ordered another. "I just need a little more."

When her next one arrived, she began going into the short version. Marcus leaving, her adoption to Choztu, she didn't mention her Ring Fighter career out of habit. From there she continued about the investigators and then the trip here.

"That's about it."

Henri nursed her drink through the story, nodding and making small comments as appropriate throughout. By the end, her mug had been completely drained, and she was visibly wavering on the stool, rocking back and forth slowly. "Wow, that... that sucks. S-sucks the big one." Henri shakes her head, eyes filling a little with tears from the story and her own memories. "D-damn it! That's the worst! What a jerk!"

She pounds a fist onto the table, "Parents are such shitty jerks! Gods! Damn! Damn them!" She sighs and viciously hugs Alaina, spouting various curses and variations of "I'm sorry!" After a moment she sighs and regains her composure; "I'm sorry, at least - at least it sounds like you did have a good-a good dad." Visibly drunk at this point, she wipes the welling tears from her eyes.

Henri nods ferociously. "Yep, pretty much. I'm just a lonely merc, these days." She rests her chin in her hands and stares off into the distance. "Heard about the missing soldiers. Wasn't interested until I saw the pay - 200 gold a day is crazy, 20 times my normal day rate. I guess this place is desperate for someone to come in and save 'em. Apparently the whole 'mist at night' thing is s-serious stuff."

Silently, Xizoh fishes in his satchel before pulling out small vial of what looks like salt, and hand it to Cel.

Leaning against the bar, he says, "Give her that to take away the hangover." Looking uncomfortable, he heads up towards his room, before turning back. "So if both of you are going to rescue the soldiers, I guess that mean's we'll be traveling together. I'm Xizoh, a healer."

Dulae:

Private Zahan leans in to whisper to Dulae, "Well, Wizard Fairhurst pushed to get volunteers to staff some searches, but the captain has say over who, see? And she turns at least half of them away. So I figure... "

Just then, the double doors open and the civilian group Dulae had first seen emerges, looking tired.

Private Zahan quickly says to Dulae, "Just a minute," and steps into the room.

After a minute, a calm, authoritative voice calls from within, "Enter."

Zahan exits the room and waves her in with an encouraging smile.

Before the doors close behind her, Dulae hears the private announce to the civilians waiting in the room, "Thank you all for coming, but we're done for the day now. If you'd like to volunteer, please be back after dawn and..."

The room is expectedly spacious, with two small doors leading to private offices. But in stark contrast to the usual meticulous order of a ranking officer's office, it is a chaotic mess. Dulae can see piles of scrolls, books, and papers spilled over desks, some stained carelessly with ink. She can see magic items commonly used by the military scattered on desks and the floor, including the biggest pile of teleportation orbs** she has ever seen. The mess indicates to Dulae that this wizard, Fairhurst, must outrank the captain in the military hierarchy.

Dulae sees a man in his late 40s of average stature and a scholarly build in high-ranking wizard's robes wiping tiredly at his eyes as his enters one of the private offices. Three young women and men sit at desks pouring over papers and scrolls with tense expressions. Dulae knows these are likely the wizard's apprentices.

Directly in front of Dulae is the commanding form of the captain of the southern contingent. She looks to be in her mid-50s and she is resplendent in the silver celestial armor of high-ranking paladins, complemented with a rich Altien-blue cloak. "I am Captain Jaya Vazquez. Your papers, please."

Dulae has heard of Captain Vazquez's competence, and reckons she is about a CR 10 or 11.

**Dulae knows teleportations orbs operate like the teleport spell, with one charge each. It will transport anyone touching it. The radius of the orb dictates the radius of the spell. Very expensive to make. But she also knows Silo Fairhurst invented them, so she's not too surprised.

Henri nods again, saying "Oh man, that would be great! You should definitely join u- hic up, it's gonna be eeeasy." A hiccup interrupts the middle of her speech and causes her to go into a fit of giggles. "The two of us, fighting mist... Whatever, monsters or whatever? Forget about it, it's gonna na crazy! Listen-" Henri leans in closer, eyes wide, "I'll help you with this, th- your dad, your shitty biological dad, and you come with me to this mist thing. Deal?". She holds out a wavering hand.

At Xizoh's comment, Henri swings her head around, sending her off-balance again, but still giving him a smile and a nod. "Heyyy! Good to meet you, Xixi! Get ready for some of theeese!" she points proudly to her prominent cheek scar, "I tend to get 'em a lot!" she goes into another fit of laughter at her own comment.

Dulae spoiler:

Captain Vazquez accepts the papers and reads them over. She looks up at Dulae, then back down at the papers before handing them back.

She gestures for Dulae to follow her into the other private office before shutting the door firmly behind them.

Captain Vazquez's office is immaculate, with everything in its proper place, as per regulation. There is a small wooden desk, a chair behind it, a chair in front of it, and a closed closet door. A thin stack of paperwork is neatly ordered on the desk. Dulae thinks this is the smaller of the two private offices, reinforcing her earlier impression that the wizard must outrank the captain.

Instead of sitting or inviting Dulae to sit, the captain turns to face her and clasps her hands behind her back in an imperious posture.

"Show me."

Please put your next post in a spoiler (marked 'spoiler').

Spoiler:

Dulae rolls up the sleeve on her right arm and concentrates briefly. A flicker of warmth rushes over her forearm and a blue tattoo fades into existence: a shield bearing Altien's crest, but with the addition of an unsheathed sword behind it. She holds it up for inspection.

"Orders, Captain?"

Dulae spoiler:

Captain Vazquez breaks into a smile that is almost wolfish. "Welcome, lieutenant."

She gestures for Dulae to sit and she takes a seat herself behind the desk. "An unanticipated luxury to have you with us."

She drums her fingers on the desk purposefully, forming her thoughts.

"No doubt your orders from your commander have informed you that Southtown has been the site of an excavation operation on Mount Oranis for many months.

"Over a month ago we observed an unusual mist originating at the peak of Mount Oranis after sunset each night that spreads down the mountain before disappearing after dawn. Three weeks ago we found evidence that the mist is harmful, in the form of animals found dead or mutilated in the morning and the death of a traveler in the pass.

"We have since taken care to avoid the mist, but it seems to be strengthening with the colder weather. The mist is steadily approaching nearer to Southtown, especially when there is little moonlight or it is particularly cold. Lately we have noticed it will form even when heavy clouds block the sun.

"Four days ago we lost a six-person excavation team when it became cloudy unexpectedly. A twelve-unit search and rescue team disappeared in the same way the next day. No bodies have been recovered.

"The main Kinghaven force is marching south to give aid. They're perhaps three days out.

"In the meantime," she sighs, "this boneheaded wizard is bankrupting us by hiring civilians to use his useless magic maps that are meant to track these people."

She shoots Dulae a serious look. "I have a suspicion that there is a mage at the heart of this mist. Silo's ridiculous scheme unexpectedly presents an opportunity to get someone with your unique talents close to the mountain without scaring them off.

I want you to join a team tomorrow as 'retired sergeant' Toema, a fellow hired volunteer. Subtly encourage the team you're with to explore outside of Silo's silly maps if you need to, with all due awareness of the time of day and weather. No one is to know your true purpose outside of you and I. Report back to me discretely."

She folds her hands in front of her on the desk. "Any questions, lieutenant?"

Seriously. Spoiler.

Spoiler:

Dulae sits down and returns the smile. "Thank you Captain; if half of what Kieran has told me is true it will be a pleasure to work with you."

As the Captain describes the situation, Dulae's face grows grimmer. A twelve person team went missing? If we had known THAT, I wouldn't be alone. Three days to find out whats going on before the army scares the culprit off... doable.

Dulae clears her throat. "Just a few questions, Captain. First off, what level of magical support did the recovery team have? Second, could you identify anything about the nature of the mutilations?"

Dulae spoiler:

Captain Vazquez glances down at her paperwork.

"Two rank 5** clerics and a rank 5 sorcerer were in the search and rescue team." She flips through the papers to pull out another. "The animals were found mutilated with wounds consistent with wolf or bear attacks, but were not consumed. The traveler was found dead with no wounds."

**Dulae knows this is equivalent to about level 3.

She thinks for a minute, turning the Captain's words over in her mind. "I think this can work Captain, as long as the team I go with doesn't have any weak links; they wouldn't survive high risk reconnaissance. I don't suppose you can stack a team for me?"

Dulae spoiler:

Captain Vazquez frowns at her. "I don't agree to send anyone that I don't think can handle themselves, lieutenant. Did you have something in mind?"

Alaina smiled, "Alright deal, but only if I find out something that's not immediately helpful in finding him." Downing her whiskey again, and getting another, "Now, how about we drink until I don't feel sad?"

Taking out a gold piece and slapping it on the bar in front of Laurett, "However many whiskey's that'll buy me. If you please."

Xizoh's comment got her attention, "Oh hello there, Zee-oh is it, pleasure to meet you." Her eyes quickly gave him a once over, "A real pleasure."

Alaina, Henri, Xizoh, Cel:

Laurett's eyebrows go up a bit at Alaina's request, but she slides the gold off the table.

She collects something from the back counter and places a third-full bottle of whiskey on the bar that looks like it might pour five-ish full glasses. She then puts down two more empty glasses next to it.

She dips below the bar for a moment and puts a small metal pail in front of Henri. "This is for your room dearie. I won't tell you what to do, but, you should know that clean-up is three silver per mess."

Alaina - question for you in the discussion tab.

EDIT: Also, just for the record, anyone who is hungover tomorrow in-game (we'll do a constitution (read: fortitude) save with a bonus for Xizoh's remedy in the morning) will take a 1-3 penalty to any check for the day (or until they rest again, or there's some other heal attempt).

Henri nods in reply, saying "Yes, yes, of course, I'd never keep you from your noble quest." She lets out a small chuckle at nothing in particular, and grabs the whiskey greedily, pouring out glasses for the two of them. She then puts her own gold piece on the bar - "Let me at least coverrr the tip."

Henri laughs with a grin as Laurett sets the receptacle in front of the elf, and moves the bucket closer to her. "Thanks, l-love, I'll do my best." She holds up her full glass of whiskey to do a small, shaky cheers with Alaina.

Xizoh, Cel, Alaina, Henri:

Laurett looks genuinely surprised for a moment at the sizable tip. "Altien bless you, dearie! That's mighty kind of you."

Xizoh and Cel notice Laurett becomes more likely to look toward their group to see if they need anything while helping other customers.

RETCON!!!

Looking at Henri with a bit of shy and a bit of fear, "I...well...the thing is..." and the look of fear deepends a little bit, "I'm afraid of the stories I heard growing up about what they do to magic users who aren't part of the government. I heard all kinds of terrible things from people at the tavern near my home in Sky City. I don't know what all is true, but it sounds pretty awful."

"I honestly don't know if I even count, though. I mean, I can't do stuff like make stuff out of thin air or anything. I just seem to be able to manipulate air, and that's pretty much it. I don't really know much about it myself, I haven't used it much in my life what with the stories and everything."

"I think those two are just practical jokers," he says thoughtfully. "I think they were teasing me, but I don't think they meant any harm. I do appreciate you're willingness to stand up for me, though. I don't know many people who do stand up for others like that, but it's very good of you," he says with a small grin forming on his face.

"Anyway, I'm very tired from our travels. I'm not used to things like that, although, the way it sounds I should probably get used to it. The innkeeper's out of rooms, so I'm going to go sleep in the stables buried under hay and thick, warm clothes. No better time than now to start getting used to rough travel conditions, right?" he says with a jovial tone.

Captain Vazquez gives her a small, ironic smile. "Actually, lieutenant, I'm hoping they'll be smart enough to do just that if the team gets too close. We have enough people unaccounted for as it is. But I see your meaning."

She drums her fingers sharply on the desk again for a beat. "I'll see what I can do."

She rises and clasps her hands behind her back. "Bunk here while you're in Southtown, lieutenant. Hint that you have permission from me for your retired status as a favor to your former mentor Kieran.

"Report to the civilian waiting room first thing tomorrow morning and await assignment with the rest."

She smiles slyly. "I expect reports from you every evening, sergeant."

Recognizing the command as a dismissal, Dulae straightens to attention and solutes. "Yes sir." She turns and leaves the small office. She eyes the teleportation globes for a few seconds, considering just how much value a suicidal thief might get away with, before turning to Private Zahan.

"Well Zahan, it seems like I'm going to be heading out tomorrow. Mind telling me where the bunks are? I feel like putting my pack down before getting something to eat."

Retcon part II

"Thank you Xizoh, I'm sure she'll be greatful for this in the morning," he says taking the hangover cure. "And it's a pleasure meeting you! I'm most happy to know I have this one," indicating Henri, "to protect me, but that if worse comes to worst, you can keep us alive!"

Cel yawns and says, "Now, I'll be heading to my...um...nest? See you in the morning!"

Dulae:

Dulae notices that none of the teleportation orbs in the pile are glowing, which means they are not charged and fairly worthless.

Private Zahan is re-ordering chairs in the civilian waiting room, which is otherwise now empty.

He raises his eyebrows in surprise at Dulae's comment. "Hm, bad luck to get stuck with the civilians. I guess retired status isn't all it's cracked up to be."

He finishes heaving the last chair, moved to serve as a table in a card game, back to its proper place in a corner. "But still, if she's letting you bunk here, that's something."

He tilts his head in the direction of the door. "Follow me, I'll show you."

He leads her down the stairs to the landing by the entrance, and then down the steps leading to the level below. The stone-lined space feels cavernous compared to the level above, as though some of it has been tunneled underground. Halls and rooms are well lit with lamps on the walls and feel comfortably warm.

Dulae catches glimpses of what looks like an armory, a training room, a workshop, a series of meeting rooms and offices, and a small mess before they reach a large chamber with many rows of cots.

Zahan leads her to the back of the room and stops next to a bed in the corner. "Back row is for visiting messengers. I'm sure it'll do."

Dulae's cot looks serviceable, with simple bedding and a standard issue pillow and blanket. The room is slightly warmer than the rest of the lower level, with no perceptible draft.

He points to a chest at the end of the bed. "For your gear. Anything you need washed goes to the laundry," he points to a large basket on the other side of the room. "Lights are out in here an hour before midnight and dim two hours before that. Latrines are outside, mess is the next room over with meals at dawn, noon, and dusk. I think you're on your own for travel rations though," he says apologetically.

"Anything else you might need, let me or Lieutenant Buhari know, yeah?"

Cel:

Laurett hears Cel's plan to sleep in the stables and raises her eyebrows. "No charge, if you're sure. Make sure you don't get any hay near the woodstoves or lanterns or Rik will throw you out by your ear," she says with a grin, but a serious look in her eyes.

After opening the outside door, Cel feels a shock of cold and an icy breeze. The lights around town have dimmed since they were first lit, and he can barely see Mount Oranis towering over the sleepy town. In the light of a recently risen new moon, he notices an unnatural-looking cloud of mist is slowly roiling from the top of the mountain and seems to have crept about a third of the way down the mountainside.

The stables are warm and comfortable inside. A single lantern offers a dim view of three woodstoves emitting a steady, glowing heat to different areas of the stables. The floor near the stoves is remarkably clean of hay. The horses are all quiet and calm.

From the doorway, Cel can see a few stalls of presumably about a dozen. One stall looks to be stacked full of hay, with its stall door shut.

After Cel's small retcon my interpretation is that Cel, Henri, Xizoh, and Alaina have all seen each other and met very briefly. If that doesn't jive with what you have in mind, let me know.

Totally jives! Thank you for that part. My fiance is the human enbodiment of a puppy, therefore we must go outside and play ALL weekend long. It's not a big deal to post on weekends, but it will be more intermittent and long reads are more challenging than the weekday. I'll do my best to keep up, though!

Cel looks over the stables and steels himself to a potentially uncomfortable bed, but decides it's necessary with what might be coming traipsing around a mountain looking for missing people. He decides to make the best of it, and climbs over the door and dives into the hay pile. His large hooded poncho on, and partially pulled over his face to protect against the pokey bits. He digs about a 1/3 of the way under the hay to let it act as an insulator on top of his thick clothes and poncho. "It's all going to be okay" he says to himself. "I will be safe," and drifts off to sleep.

Naturally, naturally. Everyone is well above the 10 posts a week I had asked for thus far, so you'll hear only encouragement to soak up daylight when you can from me.

We'll find a good rhythm as a group as we go. I'm happy to summarize if someone needs it (and I have Xizoh et al. to help keep me honest in that).

Cel:

A couple minutes after Cel hits the hay, he hears the creaking of a woodstove door swinging open and the lightly percussive sound of someone throwing more wood in.

The door swings shut and latches. A few seconds later a boy of sixteen pokes his head over the stall door, blanket in hand. He sees that the person he was going to offer it to has buried themselves in hay, so he shrugs and leaves it draped on the door of the stall instead.

"You will be safe here," he whispers. "'Night."

She looked at her three remaining glasses, then around the room. Pointing to some random man, she yelled, "Hey, you there. You like whiskey?" Indicating her three untouched drinks.

Henri downed two more whiskeys and quickly degraded into a mess. She usually didn't drink this quickly, but wanting to keep up with Alaina, she downed the alcohol with reckless abandon. With each drink, her movements became more rigid and violent, compared to her usual graceful poise. Alternating between laughing and crying on a whim, after her final drink, she collapsed in a fit of giggles on the bar. "Oh god, this is bad, I-I'm s-sorry-" she is cut off by a few short hiccups.

Peeling herself off of the bar, she warily stepped to the floor and grabbed her things off of the chair. "You have a place to-to stay here, lover?" She leaned on Alaina, before regaining her wavering balance. "I've got a n-nice *hic* room here, told it has quite a view if you wann-wanna come up." Another wave of giggles rolls out of her mouth as she stumbles to the staircase, coat swung over her shoulder and bucket proudly in hand.

By the same token, I seem to only be capable of having one, sooo, yeah this is not going to end well (though the entry doesn't mention the time frame for how frequently you can do this - probably less frequent than I'm drinking right now, though). A very big meta and future thank-you to Xizoh for being a bro.

@Alaina: Roger. I'll have you roll anyway, but it'd be an easy check. Also, I'm modifying 'three' to 'two' because Henri had already poured a glass for herself from the bottle (or so I thought). Not that it makes much difference.

@Henri: Can you confirm for me the total number of drinks and a rough estimate of time over which they were consumed? (I figure a couple hours)

Alaina, Henri:

A man sitting with another man and a woman at table close to the bar points to himself in a questioning way, and then gets up to retrieve the drinks. The pair he is with look very pleased at this development. Smitty also grins at Alaina from behind the bar.

"Many thanks!" says the random man cheerfully. "Mighty kind of you."

@Xizoh: are you already upstairs in your room? (Wasn't clear to me if you'd exited the bar.) If not, you also see the spoiler above.

Dulae smiles. "Being retired has its perks - I get to travel around a lot. Much more than when I was stationed in Teresct."

As they walk into the bunk room she presses a hand to the wall, feeling the warmth radiating out. I bet they don't have this kind of convenience magic in Abbhen... poor bastards. Its even colder there than here!

"Thanks. Hey, know if the store in town is any good? I need to get some rope if I'm going to be dancing around on a mountain, and I doubt they'll let me raid the supply room."

Dulae:

Zahan scratches at his head for a moment. "Hm, you know, I'd actually go ask the quartermaster, Balewa. I'd bet she'd have some you could borrow for the search. I think some of the other civilian groups have, depending on where they're headed."

Looking up at the man, "You're welcome."

Helping Henri steady herself, "I have a room already. How about we get you to yours?"

Seeing the alcohol induced state of the two, Xizoh nods to Alaina and Henri. "I best be off to bed. Anyone gets hurt, wake me. Otherwise, I'll see you in the morning."

As he walks away he tells Henri, "Your friend has the powder, mix it with water and drink it. It should help with the...uh...alcohol.", and disappears up the stairs.

@Henri Always glad to help, and it looked like you needed it, more than I did.

Yep, probably about a couple hours with 2 ales and 3 whiskies (so 5 drinks total). I can make a fortitude check if necessary (though it's probably hopeless. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Henri leans heavily on Alaina, and points ahead to the stairs. "Onwards, then! Onwards to my roo-room!" Laughing and wavering some more, she tips and stumbles her way up the stairs. "Room number th-three, if you..." she pulls the key from her pocket as her voice fades into hiccups and chuckles, and her eyes start to fade. She is barely awake by the time they hit the top of the stairs, laying 90% of her weight onto Alaina to stay upright.

Alaina, Henri:

As Alaina helps Henri up the stairs, she notices that Laurett glancing up after her with a warm smile. Smitty gives them a wave from across the room.

Chance Henri drops her keys at the top of the stairs: 1-7 No, 8-20 Yes: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Alaina hears a quiet metallic clang that sounds like a key dropping just after they reach the top of the stairs. Henri does not seem to notice.

Xizoh:

Xizoh's room is small and simple, about ten feet by eight feet. A single window with thick blurry glass looks out over the roof of the stables, away from the mountains. He can't see much through it in the darkness, but it casts a dim light over the room.

The narrow bed has plain white bedsheets that feel crisp and clean, a feather pillow, and a thick knit wool blanket. There's a short wooden table next to the bed, a chair in a corner, a dry washbasin with a pitcher of water and a coarse towel, a small metal tub, and a chamberpot. Four wooden pegs stick out from the wall next to the door.

An unlit lantern sits on the table next to a couple matches. A woodstove next to the wall is providing a comfortable amount of heat and a bit of glowing light, with a small stack of wood and an iron poker beside it.

There is a muffled clamor below, as the rest of the tavern's patrons finish their drinks and head home. Xizoh can also hear the intermittent opening and closing of doors near his.

Always fun, Alaina thought as she expertly knelt down to retrieve the key. Getting to room three, the Wolf opened the door and managed to get Henri on the bed. "Good night Sweetie." Leaving the room, she locked the door and slid the key under it.

Now, do I go to bed or go back down stairs? She thinks. After a moment, she heads to bed.

Alaina:

If Alaina looks through Henri's window, she can see a recently risen new moon. The mist on Mount Oranis, which she has seen from sleeping fairly close to the mountain in the pass the night before, is roiling slowly and silently from its peak. It has crept about a third of the way down the mountainside.

Alaina's room is quiet - the noise from the tavern downstairs fades as patrons leave.

Henri:

Henri is fleetingly, vaguely aware of being horizontal.

Henri's hat falls off as she hits the bed, and her back hits it about a second after she tries and fails to get her boots off. Unconscious, she starts mumbling something unintelligible into the empty air of her room.

"Well, that makes things easy. I'll just get what I need in the morning after I see who I'm going with. Thanks for the help."

Dulae spent the rest of the evening cleaning her equipment, eating a quick meal in the mess, before heading to sleep.

An eerie howl pierces the air from Mount Oranis. Unnaturally loud, it reverberates throughout Southtown, audible even in the barracks at the military headquarters. It is clearly heard by anyone awake, it wakes anyone lightly sleeping, and disturbs the dreams of anyone deeply asleep.

End of day 1.

Morning - Day 2 - Military headquarters

Dulae:

Dulae wakes to sudden lamplight, the shuffling of soldiers in the barracks around her, and the strong smell of coffee from the mess.

Morning - Day 2 - The Wolf and Bear Inn

Cel:

Cel wakes to daylight that spills through the stable doors and is filtered through the hay. He hears Rik softly humming an upbeat jig to himself in the next stall over as he mucks it out. Cel smells hay and the familiar, smoky scent of woodstoves burning pine.

Xizoh:

Xizoh wakes to bright daylight and a chilly room. The woodstove in his room looks like it needs to be relit, although the wooden floor is fairly warm from the warm tavern below. He can smell fresh bread and bacon.

Henri:

Henri wakes up feeling cold in a strange room that she doesn't recognize.

It is small and simple, about ten feet by eight feet. Bright sunlight is streaming in through a single window with thick glass that offers a blurry view of the Abbhen mountains.

She is lying, still fully clothed, on top off a narrow bed that has plain white bedsheets that look crisp and clean, a feather pillow, and an unused thick knit wool blanket.

There's a short wooden table next to the bed, a chair in a corner, a dry washbasin with a pitcher of water and a coarse towel, a small metal tub, and a chamberpot. A row of wooden pegs stick out from the wall next to the door.

An unlit lantern sits on the table next to a couple matches. A woodstove next to the wall looks like it is not currently lit, but there is a small stack of wood and an iron poker beside it.

She can smell bacon and freshly baked bread.

She spots a brass key with a leather tag on the floor near the door.

Please roll a fortitude check.

Alaina:

Alaina wakes to bright daylight and a chilly room. The woodstove in her room looks like it needs to be relit, although the wooden floor is fairly warm. She can smell fresh bread and bacon and hear the muffled chatter of a few voices in the tavern below.

Please roll a fortitude check.
