The elderly man takes in a soft breath of air, and voice shaking, begins.
"I will tell you my tale, and you would be wise to take it to heart. Exactly 56 years ago I was hired by an elderly scholar named Imivus to fill out his expedition. He brought ten of us with him, a number he said was important. Imivus had a preference for those with reputations for following orders and asking few questions. I was young, only 14, foolish, and desperate for coin. I remember Imivus was always in a hurry. He might have been an astronomer, because he was obsessed with the idea that his campaign could only succeed while while something called the 'Ringed Planet' was in its ascendancy and that his window of time was waning. I remember he also had a large red star on the crown of his staff. The emblem was upside down, which bothered me to no end, but the man never bent it back into an upright position, so he must have wanted it that way. He never explained, and we never asked.
"What he did explain to us was that the pyramid of the Four Pharaohs of Ascension was hidden on another plane of existence. I don't know where, but I recall from the scholar's description that it was a horrible place. Imivus explained that the pharaohs thought that they would live forever after they crossed into the afterlife, so they designed a funeral mask that would enable them to call the pyramid back to our would once again, in case they would ever need to return.
"I remember that mask well enough. It was inlaid with gold and adorn with a headdress of feathers, dyed both black and red. After Imivus brought us miles to the southeast, to the base of the pyramids exposed by the sandstorm, he put on the mask. There was a great shimmer of light and a gigantic pyramid suddenly materialized in between the other four!
"The pyramid was a massive tomb of green stone. I had never seen anything like it before. Once deep inside, Imivus's apprentice deciphered several of the inscriptions that littered the walls and floors. According to the inscription, the four pharaohs had declared that all intruders would be doomed to live out their existence as eternal guardians. Apparently, anyone who saw the four symbols of the the pharaohs namesake's would forever become enslaved monsters.
"Of course, at first, I thought it was bluster designed to scare off thieves. I remember that Imivus ordered us simply to ignore the first few symbols as we came across them inside the tomb. But then, Seraton, the party bowma, suddenly cried out in alarm -- warning us to divert out eyes! He had seen the final and fourth rune! Moments later, Seraton transformed. His body became a withered husk, like the embalmed bodies we were expecting to find. And he was filled with a terrible, smoldering anger. I remember Seraton driving his entire arm through Imivus's chest, and the scholar exploding into dust and ash. As Imivus disintegrated, the funeral mask landed at my feet. I still don't know why I did, but I remember grabbing the mask and running for my life.
"Everybody ran, but I remember the long and terrible run back through the pyramid shaft to the exit, and how our numbers grew smaller each time I looked back. It was as though the pyramid itself was pulling everyone else back into the clutches of the monster that Seraton had become. Only I escaped. Probably because I was lucky enough to have the mask."
His story completed, the man falls silent. Terrified by he memories, he rocks back in forth in he chair, tears streaming down his cheeks from under his blindfold.
Congrats on making it to 200 posts!

Asher Hanafesh |

Asher places a hand on the man's shoulder, trying to give him some sort of comfort. "I'm sorry for what happened to you. What a terrible horror that you lived through. May you find the peace of Sarenrae giving your soul its deserved comfort. However, this only redoubles our resolve in this task. Others must not risk what happened to you, while the whole of this world is threatened by what might be inside. It is our choice, our responsibility to succeed here."

Belgraen |

Based on his description of the mask does it resemble the mask we have in our possession?
The questions are just off the top of my head. Feel free to include other relevant information that I did not think to ask. Also, since I don't have all the infomation I may e asking the questions under the wrong knowledges. Belgraen's knowledge is vast.

The man turns his head toward the mantis, and replies, "After the diaster I was broke. Imivus promised to pay us at the conclusion of your campaign. I sold it in the market, more than happy to be rid of it."
It appears as though the mask he speaks of is in your possession

Large red upside down star.

Horrible place where the pyramid was hidden.
Rhamlock's Hallow, a demi-plane created by the pharaohs. It is rumored to be influenced by Hell and have a number of infernal creatures, such as hellcats.

Large red upside down star on his staff.
This is the symbol of Asmodeus, the Prince of Darkness and Ruler of the Nine Hells. Asmodeus' church holds sway over the infernal realm of Cheliax in Avistan.

Belgraen |

Thinking to the group,
"It appears as though we have the mask in our possession. It also explains why the chelaxian wanted it so badly. The inverted red star described is the mark of Asmodeus, the Chelaxian holy symbol. No doubt he will be trying to get it back from us. Yet another reason to watch our backs, I suppose. Oh, and we'll need to bring means to prevent magical disease. The creatures described are a type of mummy. We'll need to protect ourselves from devils and undead. The Legendary demiplane of the pharoah's is said to have demonic influence. ... I.m rambling. My apologies. We can discuss more this evening in private over a nice meal."

GM Levi |

Knowledge (nature) 1d20+16
"ringed planet in ascendancy"
The ringed planet is Aucturn, the 11th planet from Golarion's sun. It is also known as the 'Dark One' and is of great interest to Osirionologists and people interested in Infernal subjects. The planet comes into alignment with Golarion once every 56 years, at which time there is a spike in sandstorms and elemental activity.

Belgraen wrote:I think we're waiting on a response from the old man to Dianora and Asher's questions.Asher did not ask a question, and Dianora's was answered above your knowledge checks! :)
Fair enough
If the man is obviously doesn't know any more than he's told us (or refuses to talk about it),We'll politely finish our mean and wrap up with any socially appropriate pleasantries. Then leave.
As we step outside the door are the letters where I left them (under a small rock)? If so I will pick them up and place them back in my coat pocket.
Looking at the others Belgraen speaks into their minds,
"Given this new information i would like to study these star charts and other items we procured as well as discussing the day's events. Do any of you have a secure place to convene or shall we go to my home?"

Belgraen |

The man is obviously comforted by Asher's kind words, and relaxes. He offers more gruel to each person in the tent.
Belgaren is in a rush to leave. How about the rest of you?
Not in a rush, but excited to get started. I have no follow up questions for the man. If the others do, then by all means play that out. Bel will simply listen and do his best to enjoy the gruel until he sees a reason to re-engage the man. Just assume my last post happens whenever we finish with this guy.

Sister Dianora |

Dianora politely refuses the gruel. "My thanks, but I stopped eating such fare a long time ago."
"I think it would be fascinating to see your home, Belgraen. I'm curious to see how one gets there."
Yeah, I'm ready to move on. I don't really hold it against the adventures, but even though I try being a role, not roll, player, I like checking out the crunch with a new character, especially when it's as high level as Dianora and co. I think this is a neat start if it were dropped in somewhere where I'm already accustomed to the character I'm playing with, but I just want to see how Dianora kills things, to be honest, and then get back to the role-playing. : )

Belgraen |

"I think it would be fascinating to see your home, Belgraen. I'm curious to see how one gets there."
Belgraen thinks in response;
"Magic, my dear, Magic." the playful (non-condescending) tone comes through clearly even in thought. As Dianora looks at Belgraen she'll see a smirk on his face.

There will be blood and glory soon enough, but these mods are heavy on the puzzles and traps. How do Asher and Anum feel about moving on? Do they have any questions? Anum, you've been very quiet.

When we're done here my plan is to research these items, starting with the star charts. I think they hold a key to the mystery of some sort.

Sorry about that, we just moved to a new house last week and I've had limited time to check in and every time I have it seemed things were under control. I am now done with all that and can focus :)
I am good on moving on

Belgraen |

Forging ahead...
The group of you politely excuses yourselves, and you depart from the ratty tent. Belgaren picks up his envelopes on the way out.
Bel, take us home!
I am assuming I have no reason to believe that we're in a particular hurry. If we are please let me know and I will ret-con the actions I'm about to take.
With that Belgraen looks at the group and asks, "Is there anything else anyone needs from this place before we leave? Though it will be possible to get back it won't be as simple as walking around the corner."
If anyone has any errands to run Bel will indicate which tavern he will be waiting at when they get back.
Once everyone is ready meredian leads everyone out to some open space, "Join hands in a circle please." Once this is complete Meredian's voice gets a deep and far off tone to it as he speaks a strange wind begins to circle around everyone. " A saltar para além das fronteiras do espaço e do tempo, para um lugar onde o meu coração e mente são um e o mesmo" The wind and sand instinctively causes you to close you're eyes, even if only for a moment (that goes for formerly human constructs too ;-)).
When you open your eyes you are standing in an idillic field on a rolling green hill. There is a tree line a few yards behind you and a light breeze is flowing through this meadow. About 100 yards in front of you is a modestly sized castle, which is floating about 60' off the ground. "Welcome to my home." he says with a smile.
After a few seconds the ground itself begins to swell in five places around the circle. As you instinctively reach for a weapons meridian calmly but firmly says, "Hold. there is no danger." As the ground swells form themselves into massive formations of rock and earth meredian says something in a language that sounds like he's trying to talk with a mouth full of rocks.
meridian speaks up again,"There are a few things must know for your stay here." His tone is deadly serious as he says this.
" First You are all welcome here and the guardians will not harm you, per my instruction. Though if you attack they they'll all retaliate in kind. All of them, will retaliate in kind."
"Second, This is a place of magic. It exists outside the prime material. Any spell you cast will be effectively permanent while you are here. However, once you leave so to will the spell expire."
"I don't think we'll be here long enough for it to matter, but while you are here you will Cease to age. Though when you leave the time will retroactively affect your body."
"If anyone takes any issue with any of this I am happy to send you back to where we left from, just say so sooner, rather than later."
"Questions?"

Also, again, watch who you are. You're mentioning someone else again!

Sister Dianora |

Dianora looks around constantly, with a small, enigmatic smile. "No, no questions. It all seems fairly simple enough. There is no way for the pair that was following us to make their way here? And more importantly, if they do, what further defenses does your home have, if I may ask?"

unless they are deities they have no way to follow. If they are mortal and did find a way the plane itself will rise up to grind them onto a fine paste. If they are deities than nothing in my power can stop them and we're doomed. belgraen says.
sorry about the wrong name thing. Its a bad habit i'm trying to break. Please keep calling me on it.

Belgraen |

Belgraen speaks up, "If there are no further questions I'm looking forward to getting this research started."
With that Bel leads everyone over to the castle and calls up in a strange airy language (auran) and a few creatures created of mist and wind fly over with supernatural alacrity.
Unless anyone insists on flying of their own accord the elementals carry everyone to a landing platform just off one side of the castle. (Just like the one in WOW) Standing on the platform when we land are four identical women clothes and all.
"These are my servants. Sarah, Nikki, Selene, and Christine. They can show you around and direct you to places of interest in my absence. I will be spending most of my time in the library or laboratory. Speaking of that may I see the mask please?" he asks Dianora."Oh, and I'll identify the other items also if you would like. Otherwise we have facilities for you to do so yourself."
"For your entertainment I have many books you may read, Christine is an excellent musician" The third one curtsies. You assume that's christine."If you prefer to hunt this place has plenty of game. Nothing dangerous, but still challenging. Pheasants and deer and what not. There is also plenty of space for practicing of warcraft and other martial pastimes." Belgraen thinks a moment more. "I suppose if you would like I could summon some giant eagles or something for you to ride." The last sentence is said quizzically. As if he's not sure if that would even appeal to you. "Regardless I must get to work. I'll inform you if I learn anything."
If no one has any requests Belgraen is going to excuse himself with the auction items and get to work.
The items I have are
Magic statue of a sleeping Osirion Noblewomen from the reign of the Four Pharaohs
Star charts from auction
The mask (assuming Dianora gives it to me)
DM, what rolls would you like from me?

GM Levi |

When everyone is pleased you begin to study your purchases. In the bidding process I made an error, and two items got swapped around. Therefore, I am giving you both. Sorry for the clerical error.
___
Belgaren sits in his study eyeing the items he purchased with an open mind. The first item he studies is the bull-headed statuette, which radiates an aura of moderate enchantment (compulsion). Belgaren notices that the 6 inch bronze statuette has the inscriptions for "up", "down" and "stop" on it in ancient Osirion. What the exact purpose is is still unknown to him though.
The stone figurine of the slumbering woman is not magical and actually, after close inspection, is revealed to be a fake -- the face has been changed!
The 11 papyrus scrolls are meticulously prepared star charts.
I will need an appraise check for the mask.

Belgraen chuckles a bit, "They are not slaves, I assure you. For that matter they are not even flesh and blood. They are constructs created of ice and snow given the semblance of life through magic. They have no true capacity to learn and won't even be able to remember your name once they leave you're presence."
Christine will show you around the castle. If you engage her in conversation it's pleasant enough, though not terribly interesting or insightful. The castle has all the trappings you'd expect, plus a few magical extras. You notice as you walk that everything is immaculate. you'll see magical forces occasionally moving about and tidying up. You may also notice that the women's hands are not working hands. They have no callouses or other signs of using their hands for a living. Until you dismiss her, Christine will play for you when asked and answer any other questions you may have, though her knowledge is limited to the castle and surrounding lands.

As Anum looks over the mask, he does see (quite obviously) that the mask is of a great value. As stated at the auction, it is worth several thousand sovereigns in the value of the gold alone. The 11 sphinx feathers are nicely aligned, if small. The value of the mask is around 2,000 gold pieces.
___
The slumbering woman statue is mundane. You do not recognize the face, due to your detachment from your surroundings Lower wisdom score. There is no aura on the slumbering woman statue, that was an error on my part during the auction. The statue itself is worthless because of the tampering, although you may be able to resell it. It is not used for scrying.
The bull headed bronze statue, with the compulsion aura. It is used to command a specific golem to go "up", "down", or "stop".
The mask has a moderate conjuration (calling) aura and works in a similar fashion to a Horn of Valhalla, instead calling several Osirion slave-warriors to fight on your behalf. There is no indication that the item can call forth a pyramid.

After whatever amount of time has passed (presumably the next day) through this investigation Belgraen will summon everyone to a common room.
After sharing all of the information above (pc's feel free to read it over) Belgraen adds,
"So our window is ten days. We have that long to get into the pyramid, and presumably out of it. If we don't make it out we may have to wait 56 tears for the next alignment. We'll need to pick up a friend of mine. I suspect we'll need the help(the new PC). Steele yourselves for fighting demons and shadow creatures. Unfortunately I don't know much more. I suggest we make haste to the location with the mask and hope the gateway is summoned. Does anyone else have a better plan?"
You may want to reopen the recruitment thread. I suspect we'll really need another player (or two) to survive this.

Belgraen |

Just want to clarify one thing -- the statue was switched before it came into our possession, correct? I'm assuming it was a fake the whole time, but if it happened afterward, Dianora has some a half-orc and halfling to find.
I thought it was a DM error and the statue has never been magical. Although now that you mention it why would the face have changed were it not switched.DM, if you could clarify please. We may have to track down and step on some rogue heads.

Sorry for the confusion.
The slumbering woman statue is a mundane sculpture, and the face has been reshaped before it came to the auction. The piece itself is original, but it has been tampered with.
The bull-headed statette is cast in bronze and has the enchantment (compulsion) aura.
I have reopened the recruitment thread as of last night.

No thoughts on what we want to do as long as we have plenty of resources to break curses. Anum? Otherwise I'm fine slowing down to wait for a new player. As far as that goes, getting a tank might be a good choice, since I don't think we have anyone too combat heavy, but I'm fine with whatever.
