Alright guys, I will close this recruitment in 24 hours, so if you haven't submitted your character yet, please do it as soon as possible.
Do we still have until the 20th to roleplay? It might be a bit short of time to show of my activity and skills. Still, I guess that's my own fault. I'll finish up Evan then get him submitted.
Issi Flamehair |
Smilingly Titian offers his hands to the little gnome girl and speaks up. "No worries, you were fine. Nice to meet you, ma´am! And I agree, maybe not everyone is born evil, well I think some devils and demons are, actually most, but what we do defines us, not how we were born. Even the purest can fall, and even the vilest can learn compassion and repent!"
As Titian takes Issi's hand he can feel the warmth of her skin. She's not just warm but downright hot - it feels like she's running a fever that should have her in bed seeking attention from the healers. "It's nice to meet you too. I'm Issi Flamehair and I'm here for an adventure. What's your name?" Her smile is bright and infectious. "I've never met a demon or a devil but I think you're right. Most people are nice! You are, he is" She gestures to Serolt "and this lovely hunter is the nicest of all!" Issi scratches cheerfully at Regin's ears, eliciting purrs.
Serolt smiles and bows down a little to take her hand equally. "Regin's his name, and yes, he likes fish. Not afraid of the water this cat!" he smiles.
He listens to the heavy philosophical talk and interjects late as his mind drifts along a little.
"But what of those with little choice? Not everyone is a bandit leader, not everyone is evil when it comes to crossing swords."
He gestures to the two duelists practicing their trade in the courtyard, "Those two for example are bandying their weapons for our entertainment - ultimately for the coin they need to fill their bellies."
"There are those in the hinterlands who are left with no choice but banditry to fill their bellies. Hunger is a powerful motivator. They may have fallen on hard times and be in need of an even break. Not all to be sure, but some."
He stretches his legs, tired of standing in one place so long, "I'll use my weapons on any who cross me and mine to be sure. But I'll also show mercy to any who cease their attack and throw up their hands. I've shown mercy to a few, and never had cause to regret it."
He ruffles Regin's fur, "At least not yet." he laughs.
Serolt too feels Issi's unnatural core temperature as they shake hands. She seems completely unaware of her sky-high temperature as she continues coo-ing over Regin. It's only after Serolt finishes his interjection that her voice pipes up again.
"Mr Regin's human is right. We have to be kind to people at least once. If we don't then we might as well be demons ourselves. We can all do great things, or really really bad ones if we want. We have to choose to be better than other people, we have to choose to be merciful.
Sometimes" She pauses, voice softening as her hair takes on a more subtle hue "I can do bad things. But I'm not a bad person! I don't want to be a bad person so I don't let the bad things define me. I choose to be good." Reaching up she takes Serolt's hand again in her own, much smaller one. Sitting atop his firepelt companion she could easily be mistaken for the tall man's daughter.
"Anyone who goes out there should be a good person, we need more good people in the world. Oh" Her grin reappears, full blast. "I like the name Prosperity too! It's a... FOOD!" She leans over to whisper in Regin's ear, urging her mighty steed towards the vendor and his buns of meaty goodness. Unfortunately she seems to have forgotten to let go of Serolt first...

Over in the corner a young man has been quietly chanting for himself for the past few minutes. He is dressed in a pair of simple brown robes with a reinforced shirt of hides protecting his torso. He got a crossbow at his back, but none of the larger melee weapons some of the others carry, though if one looks closer it's possible to spot a wide variety of pouches and bags hanging from his belt that could very well contain spell components. His face is very handsome, brilliant blue eyes framed by long dark hair reaching nearly to his shoulders. Underneath his hair a pair of slightly pointed ears can be seen, revealing him to be a half-elf. Though he looks a bit tired and his eyes are a bit red as the corners as if he had been crying recently.

Suddenly there is a faint sound like shattering glass and in the blink of an eye a large cat-like creature appears beside him. Standing on all four paws the creature's back reaches up to Evan's midriff. The pelt of the creature is all white, but it's easy to see that it's not of this world, it doesn't look like a snow tiger or a polar bear, rather the pelt is brilliant like a white hot forge. It gives of a soft light, but it's not so strong that it hurts to look at it.
Evan smiles widely when he sees the outsider appear. His whole face lights up. He bends down on one knee and hugs the outsider. "Finally Shiroz!" As he gets up and dusts of his knees the creature answers, in a voice lighter than that of any opera singer. "Good to see you too, but I still think this is unnecessary. Our motives and determination are stronger than any other and we got the skills to match." Evan shakes his head in denial. "Still, we should do our best. If we don't we got no one to blame but ourselves when we fail. And we have tarried here long enough squabbling. Let's go talk to the others. They could be our future companions. Having more companions would be great" Evan's face light up in a smile again as he mentions companions. He had been wishing for more travel companions for some time and this was a golden opportunity to get that.
Issi Flamehair wrote:"I don't think any person is inherently evil. My cousin Lorenzo was mean and tried to cut my hair but he wasn't evil, just jealous. Lots of people are like that, if you have nice things then they want to have them too." She pauses, and her hair becomes darker and darker, the colour of dried blood. "But no-one should be allowed to hurt other people. If someone tried to hurt my friends I'd hurt them back! And I'd keep hurting them until they stopped!"
Issi takes a deep breath and seems to realise that she has been shouting the past few moments. The spectators notice that her shouting...

Evan walks over with a smile in greeting. He figured the gathering is too large to waves as he says "Hi, there, I'm Evan Rivers and this is my companion Shiroz. I couldn't help but overhear you discussing bandits. That's a very important topic to all of us here. You all bring up several important points, though from different perspectives. I think they all can be valid, though not necessarily at the same time. Bandits are as different as you and I. We have different backgrounds, skills and motivations. Some resort to banditry to fill their bellies while others do it out of sadism, or because they enjoy the power it grants. A few bandits willfully abandon a safer career in civilization, while others turn to lawlessness because it was the simplest choice or maybe under duress from the more sadistic of their numbers."
As he speaks his gaze slowly travels between those before him, catching their gazes to engage them and to try to figure out if they are as passionate about the topic as him. "It falls to those of us who are to venture into the Stolen Lands to deal with this varied group. Some we will definitely have to fight, but others we might be able to show the error of their ways, or maybe even preventing them from becoming bandits altogether by giving them better options. I hope that we'll eventually paw the way for more law and civilization in the Greenbelt. That way no more people have to die to banditry." There is a slight hitch in his throat at the last sentence. His passion for dealing with banditry might seem noble, but it also is founded on very personal reasons.
Ugh, seems like my crosspost with Issi clashed somewhat
Jellak Garess |

Jellak shakes his head hearing this talk of treating bandits with kindness. Such idealism is understandable, but such softnes won't survive in the Wild. Or in a Barony, honestly.
After pondring his words, he speaks out: "It may be that all that is between a man and Banditry is a bad harvest and an empty stomach, but they still choose to use violence to steal and many folks die because of such decisions. It may be a sad story behind a bandit, but if you treat them kindly instead of with suitable punishment, word gets out. And when word gets out that a Lord is soft on bandits, it makes it easier for an otherwise honest man to break. You don't hang a horse-thief for the horse he steals... you hang him for the hundred horses not stolen because this man paid a harsh price."
Specifically he looks at the chirpy gnome. "You say you have to be kind to people at least once? Aye, that may be true if those persons are strangers and unknown. When all is balanced, kindness begets kindness."
"But if you come across a broken man, a bandit by trade. They've given up the first kindess with the last goodwife raped, the last child who couldn't eat for that which the Bandit took, or the last family without a husband and father because the man tried to keep what was his. They made their choice, and they give up their right to a first kindness by that choice. Otherwise, the next rape or murder is on your pretty little head, just as if you did the raping or killing yourself."
Evan Rivers |
Evan nods towards Jellak. Passion still burns his eyes, but he still responds to the man in a calm tone, trying to consolidate their viewpoints. "There is much truth to your words. We can at least agree on one thing though, it's better if people don't resort to banditry at all. As you say, you hand out punishment in order to make others think twice before committing crimes and rather resort to other things."
The half-elf pauses and holds up a finger. "However, what if there are no one to dissuade? What if there instead are people who have joined with bandits but haven't really had any other realistic options. If you face a group of bandits and you tell them you will kill them all no matter what they do, they will fight with ferocity until death. If however you instead offer those who surrender and repent the option of making up for their crimes, as long as they are not too serious, then you might face a much easier fight, with less risk of dying. Those bandits who are saved might then go on to do good deeds. For example work the land to make food for the child that they stole from. It is a fine balance though, it would be bad to be so kind to all bandits as to invite others to seek that path. I hope that in time it'll be possible to eliminate banditry through all the Stolen Lands, though obviously that is a far away dream now, but through this venture we can get a tiny bit closer to that goal."
The summoner absentmindedly lets his hand roam through the glowing fur of his companion. "What I'm saying is depending on the exact situation given there can be different solutions that are best for dealing with bandits. As my mom used to say. 'The answer to any question is always, it depends, the trick is to find out what it depends on'."
Kryolani |

"In my admittedly somewhat meager experience, the folks who can surrender are not the type to even start the fight to the death with the guards. If a bandit draws steel on a swordlord, he usually gets what is coming to him. If he surrenders? Than I'd be happy to give him the best trial I can, and if all goes well for him, he won't be hung for his crimes." Kryolani sniffs, "Then again, I just argue about the laws. I don't make them."

I've also been playing some free-form pbp and live sessions of pathfinder, but not as much as I've been playing PbP I love the interaction between characters and the story they create together, but also to figure out how to solve various mechanical challenges in the way that is best for the character. I like time PbP gives you to think through the things you post, which unlike live play gives you better options for playing the character differently than your real personality. I think activity is an extremely important and too often overlooked aspect of PbP. Too many games fall apart because people have widely different expectations with regards to activity or because some people lose interest and start posting infrequently. I hope that with the way you are gathering people here you'll be able to solve this issue and I am extremely excited about potentially being part of such a group.

Player's Introduction – I’ve been playing RPGs for a VERY long time, ever since the days of the D&D Basic Set (Red Box). I’ve played as many and as varied games as I could get my hands into – from Vampire to GURPS, with even some MERP, Rolemaster and RIFTS thrown into the mix. Since I found these boards, it has been a pleasure to game through PbP (a thing I had never done before), since it seems to offer many more, and deeper RP opportunities that really do not play out around a table. I love Fighters ;)

This is a post from my Bard in Carrion Crown, and part of the longest standing game I have ever participated in these boards (two and a half years and counting – always with the same players). In fact it is a sequence of posts about our group, during a moment of respite, and after a particularly nasty set of events in Ravengro that got everyone on edge (not going into details or spoilers for those that never played the AP).
-----
Tessai, my Inquisitor Tank in Council of Thieves went completely ballistic at the group here, since everyone seemed to have gotten a terrible aftertaste in their mouth after Tessai made them spend 910 gold (we must have been level 2 at the time) to heal a man’s throat and tongue, burnt out by the Hellknights after he had provided us information. Everyone was really frustrated at the loss of party cash, and veiled comments were being constantly thrown around. Until this time.
-----
And this is Zemwaar – the most honourable character I have ever played (and I have played Paladins :D), a Tulitan native to the Sword Coast not believing what his companions are planning to do with a man that tried to kill them.

Player's Introduction - I've been playing PbP games for a few years now, always as a player. I've finished a few PFS scenarios, and the first book of Rise of the Runelords (after that, the GM decided to take a break). I've also played in other APs, but as is often the case, most of them died out after a while. I'm currently playing Curse of the Crimson Throne; we started 2 years ago and we're in book 2 (it's a more laid back game, but the party dynamics is fantastic). Personally, I really like the literary aspect of PbP, which allows players to richly describe their actions.

Wow, each time I thought I was finished catching up, 10+ post.
Sitting there amongst the crowd, watching, waiting.
The young girl listens to everyone around, deciding if she should join the conversation as well. The magician and his otherworldly companion got her attention. Such display of skill, she knew, had only one meaning: To prove himself better than others, to raise his chances of selection. Posturing, she approved of that.
The girl considers moving and talking with the man, but as soon he join the philosophical discussion, which the red haired gnome was involved in. A smile comes to her lips as an old memory surfaces.
Gods, righ’em wrong and the king! Ain’t no thing ta discuss when ye meet someone. the sergeant had said when they first met years ago, when she joined the army.
Tugging her cloak closer trying to warn up her body in the cold morning, the young girl finally decides it’s time to talk. She was still dressed with the military clothes. Her satchel was no bigger than a bedroll, and the raincape she wore was more like a cloak—not standard issue—reaching down to her ankles. She'd raised the hood. Despite the dawn's light her face remained in shadow.
"Roksana, my previous company called me Rok for short, or maybe to make fun, they never dared laugh though. As for my credentials? Well nearly ten years wandering the River Kingdoms and I even swam most of the Sellen by now too, a few years of military service tops it all off."
At first, she decides to talk with the man dressed in White and Gold, but upon hearing the half orc military background, she approaches the woman named Rok.
Young, sure hands, reaching the hood expose an innocent young girl face. She cannot be more than sixteen or seventeen, yet the military clothes briefly exposed behind the raincape was hard to miss. The metallic sound of someone walking in armor, the volume of her shield in her back told a different history. The pale skin in contrast with black hair. Some would say she was pretty; certainly, the forbidding clothes hide the sinuous and lean body of a girl just reaching adulthood. Nevertheless, it was her eyes that commanded attention.
No young girl had those lifeless, old, dead looking eyes.
”Rok isn’t? I’ve heard the sergeant tell histories about 'The Rok'. Maybe he meant you?” then, she notices that no introduction was made and using the military salute she continues ”Corporal Sorry, 5th squad, 3rd company, 2nd legion. Onearm’s host.”
Issi Flamehair |
"Pharasma makes cradles for us all eventually.", Serolt mumbles to himself.
A blood thirsty lot, ready to kill for king and country, firm in their convictions. He holds Regin close.
Her quest for food thwarted by Serolt's superior strength Issi slides off Regin and sits cross-legged on the ground next to him instead. "I'd make sure that no-one had any reason to turn to banditry anymore. I'd find out what people are good at and then get them doing it. If we all do something we love then we'll work better together. My uncle Tullius is a pig-farmer. Everyone else in Thom hates pigs but my uncle thinks they are wonderful - so he likes his work and I don't have to get messy!"
Issi looks up at the knees and waists of the various people standing around her seat. When she finds Jellak she cranes her head back to look at him properly and glowers fiercely at him, hair shifting once more to a bloody crimson shade. "And when you meet this man on the road, you immediately know that he has raped goodwives and starved children? All gnomes are strangers at first meeting. If we assume that the person before us is evil then we will only beget more evil. Then it becomes us who deserve the judgement of strangers - where can that possibly end?
I'm sorry, Mr Angry Man, but I can't support that view." She turns to the half elf who just joined the conversation, eyes widening to ridiculous proportions as she sees Shiroz. She gapes for two or three long moments, clearly completely distracted by the eidolon. When she recovers she chimes back into the conversation. "That's what I meant! You have to give people a chance, ending their lives ends their potential, for good or ill. If I can convince a man to surrender after stealing a horse then in future he doesn't become a killer and can go on to contribute positively, just like Uncle Tullius!"
Turning to the eidolon, Issi drops into Sylvan. "Snowy-coated hunter, may I congratulate you on finding a companion with such good sense? You have chosen wisely in your friends." Turning back to the group at large she jumps up as an idea strikes her.
"What about crimes commited by children, or animals like my new friends here?" She gestures to Regin and Shiroz. "If they steal or kill according to a law they do not understand then what then? Do you punish them? Do you punish their humans? Can you punish anyone for breaking laws they don't know about? That's why we have to forgive, at least once. It's not fair to judge by laws that people were not aware of in the first place!"
Issi glares around the group, feet planted firmly, seemingly ready to take on any and all comers.
Kryolani |
"Now what? How would you rule? What would be your first edict or declaration? What law would you find most appealing to lay down before your people?"
"Well, if you ignore all the standard ones, no murder, no theft, and the like, then next I would say the priority is trade. A small village isn't really self sufficient. It often needs clerical services to come through for serious illnesses. The ability to trade for goods that aren't locally available, like metal stock for the smithies, or quarried stone for building. First edicts should look to those needs, to prevent a harsh winter from wiping out a new settlement."
Kryolani opens up his backpack and begins to rifle through the contents. It seems filled less with the kind of gear one might need to survive a trip through the wild, and more stationary, maps, and even a carefully bound journal. "I've got a treatise on the subject in here I believe. Standard care of burgeoning villages, or something of that color..."
Roksana 'Rok' Jedynak |
"So you've slaughtered, driven off, or, maybe, saved all the bandits, pushed the wild back into the wilderness, and brought civilization to some small group of settlers."
"Now what? How would you rule? What would be your first edict or declaration? What law would you find most appealing to lay down before your people?"
Roksana rubs her jaw, considering Serolt's question. Brows furrowed, her response is slow to start, as though she's still unsure of what she's saying.
"The Law exists to protect the people. So the first thing should be to set principles. Guidelines that all agree to live by, like the Six River Freedoms. A new settlement won't be large at first, so you don't need a hard set of laws, just something to keep the population in line. Like a group of newly joined soldiers, they have common ground so even if they don't get along, when the fires start, they fall in line. Let those guidelines influence the laws you set."
As if on cue Roksana's thoughts are interrupted by yet another new face in the crowd. One who seems to have been listening for a while before introducing herself.
"Rok isn’t? I’ve heard the sergeant tell histories about 'The Rok'. Maybe he meant you?” ”Corporal Sorry, 5th squad, 3rd company, 2nd legion. Onearm’s host."
Instinctively Roksana returns the salute with one of her own then shakes her head, giving the girl a strange look as shivers run up her spine.
She's barely half my age, why does looking at her make me so uneasy?"She realizes soon after that it's the eyes, and make a point to stare at Sorry's head when she responds.
"Apparently you outrank me, Corporal, Private Jedynak, if I can even still be called that. I haven't been in the Daggermark military for almost ten years, I'm afraid I don't even know a Onearm. If you've heard of me I can only imagine what's been said." She gives the younger woman a crooked smile and holds out her hand. "In either case, I think we can be a bit less formal. What brings you out here Sorry?"

"Pharasma makes cradles for us all eventually.", Serolt mumbles to himself.
A blood thirsty lot, ready to kill for king and country, firm in their convictions. He holds Regin close.
Turning to the group he says, "So you've slaughtered, driven off, or, maybe, saved all the bandits, pushed the wild back into the wilderness, and brought civilization to some small group of settlers."
"Now what? How would you rule? What would be your first edict or declaration? What law would you find most appealing to lay down before your people?"
Evan is surpised at the turn the conversation has taken and his eyes widen slightly. He stammers slightly. "I... I had not been thinking that far ahead. To go out there to explore, to discover the wild and varied wilderness would be nice in itself even as it at the same would offer us many hardships. Life on the road is never easy. I can only imagine how much more difficult it will be to go through lands where no one has traveled before. No doubt surviving in the wilderness will take as much of our attention, if not more than the bandits. Our focus should definitely be on every step of the way for quite a while, so we don't stumble and fall."
Evan pulls a hand through his hair with a thoughtful expression. "Still, you can't know which steps to take if you don't have the end goal in sight. If we do manage to get rid of banditry and otherwise make the place we explore into a hospitable place, then settlers will hopefully come. Rules and edicts will be needed to support the people. I think that should be the focus, to come up with the laws that are the best for the people. I don't what those laws are now. I'm not some student of law or civilization. We will have to see what needs the community and the people have when we get that far, then find out what rules or laws solve those problems. To figure out needs, it's important to talk together. If we keep track of what people wish for or require, it'll be a whole lot easier to manage any sort of group or community. I think the same holds true whether you are four or four hundred people."
Kordrek Golka |
Well this is full of the tall folk and the wee one puffing their chests to seem important. If this was an all dwarven expedition, would be far less debate and far more drinking. Bandits, bah, would never be a problem if a proper dwarven town was near by. I wonder if there is some ale somewhere
Speaking to himself and as no one has seemed to be particularly talking to him, Kordrek reaches under his cloak and pulls out his traveling companion, Suori. "Well, do you want some ale? I'm sure a lizard such as yourself could handle the make of Restov's brew. Ain't going to be as good as the stuff from back home that's for sure."
Heads off to a table and sits down, ready to rest his legs and calls over anyone who might be serving anything of note.

"Dear gods what a bunch of useless prattle. She doesn't even know what she's talking about." Celest says drunkenly to Evan Rivers leaning heavily against the reedy Adonis.
"'Courts are fer kings' is one of the Six River Freedoms! It's six right?" She complains to him, her breath about thirty proof. "The king makes the rules and you gotta follow them no matter what."
She finally looks up into his ridiculously beautiful face. Celest smiles mischievously and her voice turns husky. "Unless there's a queen."
She strokes Evan's long silky hair and brings her lips closer to his. "If there's a queen you gotta follow her rules too."

@Rok
”Well, there’s this history I’ve always been curious about. I heard you bite off Nefarias Bredd’s right ear, twice. ” after an awkward pause, Sorry brushes her hair back and continues ”Well, er, how’s that possible?”
And before answering the question she looks at the gathering around saying simply. ”Opportunity. You?”

I’ve noticed that, I’ll have to make some changes in the character. Part of the things I’m using right now is not in the legal sources. The basic concept is still the same, a dual cursed oracle, but I’ll have to change one of my curses, since Legalist only appeared in a player companion available in 2012. Other than that, still pending the skill points and gear, which I’ll do later today.
Jellak Garess |
Evan nods towards Jellak. Passion still burns his eyes, but he still responds to the man in a calm tone, trying to consolidate their viewpoints.
"Any good man knows that Justice must be tempered with mercy, and not all men who come before their lord for judgment stand in the same shoes. A person pressed into banditry under threat, or a child following along with their father or mother are clearly less culpable than the bandit leader. Each man must atone for their own actions. But to begin with with mercy or "kindness" before justice is meted out is as much folly as killing any many who steals without question. We are not Chelliax where the law is twissted to feed the joys of devils, after all."
Jellak Garess |
"Pharasma makes cradles for us all eventually.", Serolt mumbles to himself.
"Now what? How would you rule? What would be your first edict or declaration? What law would you find most appealing to lay down before your people?"
Turning back to Serolt, Jellak nods and adds.
"The first law would likely be something to the effect that no one may infringe upon the person or property of a Citizen, and the lords of the land shall protect these rights.,,." If a person is not safe in his person or property there is no society, there is no trade.

Hi i'm completely new to pen and paper rpgs are you just looking for experienced players or would you be fine with anyone?
I'm eager and willing to learn
Not the GM, but if you look carefully to the recruiting announcement, he links to another game specifically for inexperienced characters.

I need experienced PbP players familiar with Pathfinder rules for this one kerter, I'm sorry. By the way, I suggest you to begin with a shorter module or with a Pathfinder Society Scenario, not from a whole AP ;)
Jacobus Varadin |
Leave it to the Shoanti guide to come up with a very meaningful subject. The talk about trade and protection of property rights was well received by Jacobus who decides to listen to the others to see who his potential traveling companions might be.
He spies a young girl Sorry looking at him but then turning away and decides to find out more about the and her military bent.
"Excuse the question but you have military experience? Why you can't be more than than young teenager, where and how did you get in the military?"

Roksana 'Rok' Jedynak |
Roksana glares at Celest as she speaks with Evan.
"You just proved me right by quoting one of the Freedoms. Guidelines, that's where it all starts."
Not waiting for a response she turns back to Sorry.
"Opportunity, and gold. The rumors say there might be a lot of both on this job. If I'm ever going to start my own mercenary company I'll need to outfit my men, and some prestige behind my name. Although if there are any more stories like the one about me and Bredd, I may not have to worry about that last bit!" She laughs at the idea of a bunch of soldiers trading stories of her biting various body parts off of other people, even if it does make her sound like a typical halforc, it's amusing.
She nods as Jacobus questions young Sorry's military experience.
"I'm pretty curious about that as well. You look barely the age I was when I signed on, how long were you in the service for?"
·Sorry· |
@Jacobus, Rok
The girls do not notice the man in white and gold until he asks his question. The man intimidating gaze meets the dead stone stare of the girl. Surprised, she blinks a couple of times, her arms moving beneath the raincape exposing the armor and weapons.
Jacobus notices that, the woman wears almost the same protective gear as himself. A scale mail, daggers strapped to her belt, a heavy mace and a crossbow. The shield visible on her back over the raincape.
She opens her mouth to answer, when Rok questions the same thing.
”My family and village were destroyed. I was no more than twelve. Staff Sergeant Aragan allowed me to join. That was four years ago.” another awkward pauses as she brushes her hair back again and finally adds ”The other alternative wouldn’t be pleasant.”

"Now what? How would you rule? What would be your first edict or declaration? What law would you find most appealing to lay down before your people?"
Reknar simply bursts into laughter - "We may be getting slightly ahead of ourselves here - I say keep an open mind, and let's see what is thrown at us, if anything" - he takes another drink with a sidelong glance and a chuckle at Celest - "Edicts? Declarations? At this time, when we are sitting around here having a drink? Come on people. There is nothing more dangerous than one who thinks he is meant to rule... Those get people killed" - the man spits on the floor next to him.
Acharn Edasseril |
Shiroz walks over to the gnome and rubs his face against her to respond to her greeting. "I am sorry little girl, gnome. I do not understand you. I speak common, elven and celestial only. It seems like you share many of the same viewpoints as Evan and myself though, that is good. I hope I'll be able to understand any laws you make. I might not be of this worlds, but most of the concepts transfer fairly well. Evan has explained a fair bit of it to me already." Just to prove that he hasn't taken to human manners completely Shrioz proceed to sniff, lick, then rub against Issi. "You are warm and nice to rub against. Is that normal for your folk?"

Kryolani looks mildly offended, "It's still worth the effort to consider how one might rule given the opportunity. It's better to be prepared in the event that one is placed in charge than than to ignore the possibility in it's entirety and find ones self woefully ill equipped for the challenge."

"I just think it will be an insurmountable effort - you'll end up having to consider hundreds or thousands of different scenarios before you come to any conclusion" - Reknar shrugs - "Of course you can go through the exercise and theorize about it but, the way I see it, this is like a military incursion - sometimes you gather as much intel as you can, and wade in as prepared as you can. Even then there is always some sort of imponderable thrown your way. Right here, drinks in hand, there is no such intel" - he adds - "You may never even be selected out of this courtyard. And if you do, and by some happenstance of fate, or your own mettle, you manage to be in a position to say... Actually build a realm from scratch, you cannot fathom what will be conditioning your efforts - will you be subordinate to a neighbor? Will you be at odds with them? Will the people support you, or will you be mandated by someone else?" - he chuckles - "Take no offense, but this just goes on and on, that's all I'm saying"
Taking a step forward, the man continues - "You see, I tend to think that the difference is made by the decisions you are forced to take on your heels - if you have all the intel at your disposal, all the best, and that is the way I like to roll, but when that curve ball comes your way, that is when your decisions make all the difference in the world" - but then he smiles again - "Heh, got a tad carried away there. Don't mind me much. Just the ranting of an old sergeant"

"While I agree that it is impossible to know what kind of situation we'd be entering, I wholeheartedly disagree that we cannot fathom what might condition our efforts. We are not the first group of people to attempt to tame a wild territory. Others have tried, and others have succeeded, and ignoring their advice on the matter is foolhardy at best. Do I propose that one should lay down a strict network of rules and punishment without having an eye for the circumstances in the field? Of course not. Would I suggest that due consideration should be given to broad, likely circumstances? Absolutely." The slight sorcerer seems to be warming to the debate, feeling far more at home with canny discussion that with a dueling display.
"I'd go farther than saying there are a thousand scenarios to encounter. There are countless. Possibilities unending. That's why what we do is exciting. That's why it is fun. For many of us, anyway. Like you say, 'wade in as prepared as you can'. For some of us, that means crossing blades in a courtyard duel with a worthy opponent. For others, it means crossing words, considering edicts that we one day might be forced to uphold." Kryolani gestures towards the swordplay, "They will never fight this battle again, but I daresay their time has not been wasted for it."

Young Evan isn't too familiar with the opposite sex. He has spent far too much time on the road and in the company on his mother to have time for much of that. He knows his own beauty as his mother have told him about it often enough, but he is still flattered as well as a tiny bit embarrassed to see Celeste take such an interest in him. He smiles even as his face takes on a slight blush. When she grapples him he struggles against it, as he doesn't think this is an appropriate time for such things with all the people around and the focus on being selected for the journey south. If there were different he might not have struggled so. Still, his strength and skill is no match for Celeste's. "This is... Not the place for such things..." He stammers out before his words turn soft. "Thank you for the interest though. A King should have Queen. Though I do agree with others that it is way too early to talk of such things."

Shiroz tears away from Issi the moment he sees that Evan is in danger. He charges towards Celest with a growl and a ferocious look. He looks at the half-orc, "So you are here because you want to start your own mercenary company, right?"
He then looks at Sorry, "What about you? What is it that prompted you to answer the summons?"

"No Shiroz! Stop!" Evan shouts out and holds out a hand to stop his companion before it can attack the woman. "She doesn't mean harm." Unless its the elvish part, not sure I'd go for that either, eh Suori?" Looking down at his mug "It seems I'm out of ale again," reaching into his pockets "And not much coin left. Tis a sad day indeed Suori."
Kordrek can feel Suori's laziness setting in as she curls up on his shoulder. I hope whoever is running this starts it soon. Before the philosophical debate becomes more of a dogma teaching session, and I get to thirsty to go out and find cheaper ale.
