About Jellak Garess

Description:

Of medium height and lean, a man stands tall with shoulders back as if he were barrell chested rather than wirey. Adding to the effect is a plaited, braided beard - such that you would expect on a dwarf rather than a human with the certain look of Restov blood about him. He is dressed all in leathers, except he wears no boots with well calloused feet that look like they haven't often seen boots in some time. The black hair and beard and acqualine features should contrast strongly with the dwarven-plaited beard, but truly both look natural on him. His features are young, if weather-worn, but there is a natural calmness about him, almost seeming sedintentary as the earth beneath his bare feet.

Background:

Jellak is a disappointment to House Garess. They hope that answering the Swordlord's cause might allow him to regain station within the House, and add value to the Garess name. There was no scandle or great tragedy behind this disappointment, He simply took his first mission for the House entirely too seriously. He was sent as an emissary for House Garess to the Golushkin Mountains to live with the dwarves while still a youth. The intent was his name and blood would be seen as a compliment to his dwarven hosts and as a Ward of the dwarves, he would make friendships and contacts that would eventually help facilitate trade between House Garess and the dwarves... However, Jellak felt a calling to the dwarven way of living and their attachment to earth and stone. Eventaully, he fully adopted the dwarven ways of his hosts, including changing both his religion and vocation - joining the Stonecalled druids of the caves.

Years later, now a man, he returned to his family to - purportedly fulfill his role in the house. Things did not go as planned. First, he tried to insist that people use his adopted surname Stonecalled. Unfortunately, this was seen by his family as an insult - he was supposed to spread the influence of the Garess name, not shed it for some pagan Dwarven spiritualism. To make things worse, instead of advocating for Garess interests with the dwarves Jellak consistently advocated for dwarven interests to House Garess instead.

In truth, he is still loyal to his House, but he feels the Dwarven way of doing things is superior and wants his family to adopt some of the calm, slow, orderly ways of the dwarves of the Mountains. He truly believes that increasing the relationship between Garess and the Mountain is the way to strengthen the house, are their words not "Strong as the Mountains?" Regardless of his intent, it has become clear that his closeness with the dwarves has made his intended role of emissary untenable to his family.

Additionally, his insistence on holding "pagan" dwarven rituals involving caves and stone while ignoring the family's religious and social functions entirely has caused quite a stir within the realms of courtly gossip. Jellak has refused to take any wife who doesn't worship Torag and continues to use his dwarf-given surname of "Stonecalled" interchangably with that of given surname Garess.

His parents and the leaders of House Garess have seized upon the Call of the Swordlords as a great way to get Jellak away from the world of courtly intrigue, where he increasingly a liability. Further his skills in nature could be useful on campaign and if he succeeds it restores the possibly ofhaving him contribute to the influence and power of House Garess.

Personality:

Jellak's personality has become a blend of some of the best traits of House Garess and his adoptive dwarven clan. He is slow to anger and emotion, exuding the slow thoughtfulness of the dwarves. However, when roused he doesn't fly into a dwarven fury, rather tending towards the rational calculations of his human family. The end result is a calm and pleasant demeanor, that is calculating and precise when roused.

This gives him a somewhat passive personality, pleasant and easy to be around without making a large social impact on a group. However, this quietness often leads to his words having a larger effect once he interjects his position. That position is usually well thought out and reasoned before being uttered, making him a valuable councilor and arbitrator.

As a companion, he is outwardly cheerful with a slight melancholy hidden beneath a polite facade. He misses both the dwarves and his family, but knows that his life-path isn't taking him in that direction. He spends more time than truly necessary with his feet unshod, meditatively connecting with the earth below him. This centering helps keep his focus on the task at hand, in this case aiding the Swordlords and restoring his place within House Garess.
