Chapter 3: "What Lies in Dust". Part One: "Within the Crux"

In Westcrown, darkness brings fear and death, the night haunted by the spawn of a terrible curse. Striving to free the city from its decades-old blight, the Irises must reveal a long-buried secret and a treasure locked away for ages. Their journey will set them against the scum of Westcrown’s underworld, denizens of the haunted night, and the very forces of Hell itself, all in an attempt to rekindle the memories of long-dead spirits with stories still to tell. Yet what those souls reveal might prove even deadlier than the city’s midnight curse.

Varius does not respond to Catina, despite the mummy kneeling and completely weirding him out. He simply remains white-faced and shaking.

After two rounds Alessandro shakes off the fear effect. "Why does it not surprise me that the mayor has a mummy. All rich people seem to collect these things but I can't possible imagine why. I say we destroy it. Undead are an abomination and no good can come from using one. I vote to destroy it either by hand or by commanding it off one of these endless pits. However, if you insist we keep it, I won't complain."

Catina looks quite worried at this turn of events. However, she doesn't want to directly oppose Faustinia. "Erm... Are you really sure about this. It's... This poor creature must have suffered much in life, as it does not in death. Look at it. It's... not even whole." She looks at the ground, not wanting to look at the mummy and not wanting to face Faustinia either. "Whatever power that book has over him, it's not really right to use him as a... as a tool, right?" Muttering more to herself than anything, she adds "Maybe it would be the kindest to just stab it through the heart and kill it..."

Council of Thieves Maps

We're out of initiative order since my last post.

The mummy nods to Faustinia with a void expression.

DC 22 Sense Motive or DC 30 Perception check:
You notice that the undead is not really looking at Faustinia, but at her book instead. This leads you to think that his obedience goes to the tome, rather than to the person who holds it. Should it lose sight of the tome, the mummy could perhaps become dangerous again.

Catina still doesn't want to look too closely at the mummy, but at least she's glad that its effect on her companions has worn off. She looks to the for support, nodding at Alessandro's suggestion. "I'm not sure sending it plummeting would be so kind, but I agree with the intent."

Petals finally manages to slow her heart. After gasping for breath she didn't know she was holding, the elf blurts out loudly "No! I... I... mean..." she pauses, cheeks reddened from embarrassment but she has to say this. Gathering her courage, she continues much firmer "We can't use the undead. We can't be like the monsters who enslaved him and all the others in here. Whether he was good in life or bad, he NEEDS to be put to rest." she looks to their mage and pleads "Please, Faustina. We can't do this."

In case it is needed she'll try logic "It's looking only at the book. Even if you decided to use it, would you be able to keep the book in its line of sight all the time. One mistake and it could curse any of us with its Rot. A horrible cursed disease that will resist healing in all forms, eventually turning your corpse to dust."

If Faustina relents, she'll relax after thanking the mage a dozen times. She might even threaten a hug in there. Then she joins the talk about how to put it to rest "In all the stories, the heroes hack away and away, barely weakening it. Until one tries fire. And then WHOOSH." she uses her hands to emulate a huge bonfire going up dramatically.

No worries though if you do wish to carry on with the mummy. Petals will continue to pester with lawful good worry, but we can carry on without further holdups.

The mummy nods and Faustinia stands almost as transfixed as he does. She starts out of it as the others regain their bodies and voices, looking briefly toward them as they advise on what to do with this pitiful creature. Faustinia nods to acknowledge Alessandro and Catina’s points, but says nothing as she turns back towards the mummy, still considering.

With Petals’ plea, though, and her cautions about the limits of the book’s power, Faustinia turns to stare at her elven friend. Petals can see that Faustinia is a thousand miles away in her own head, but the wheels are turning and her brow is creased in its familiar way. After a few long seconds, she takes a deep breath and sighs. “Yes. Of course you're right, Petals,” she admits. Turning to the others as well she says, “You're all right. I thought - I don't know what I thought. This is too dangerous. It can't be reasoned with and it's risky to rely on it being able to see this book. And I've always found this kind of magic… distasteful.”

Sure returns her attention to the mummy. The taste of her power over him grown bitter, she no longer sees a potential tool. Instead he's a sad but dangerous remnant of some cruel man's whims. “This creature - this person Faustinia corrects herself, “has suffered for a long time. He is too dangerous to be left here, but I doubt there is a truly kind way to destroy him. Petals, you said that fire is quickest? That may be the best option, then. Has anyone got a torch?”

So as not to have to deal with the clutter in this room, Faustinia carefully leads the mummy out and to the north into one of the unfinished chambers. Once there, she takes a deep breath. “I'm sorry,” she tells him, before ordering him to allow himself to be destroyed.

---

It doesn't look like anyone has torches in their gear, but among the wooden (and perhaps cloth?) junk in the cluttered room, Alessandro's flint and steel, and a pint of Varius’ oil, we should be able to create a makeshift one for our purposes.

Or we could just have everyone attack him with weapons. Either option should work and I left my post intentionally vague on that point.

Varius finally snaps out of it, white-faced and breathing hard. "Ye Gods, I've never felt something like that. It was like it grabbed my heart just by being there.."

He shuts up for a while, trying to figure out what's going on with the book. "Ghastly thing, we'll be well rid of it. I have some oil - perhaps that would work. Imagine being stuck for all eternity like... like that, a slave to a book. Cursing every living thing you touch. Let's destroy it."

Varius rips off a good chunk of his clown costume, leaving his arms bare. He then wraps the cloth around the head of his warhammer, before soaking it in oil to make a makeshift torch.

"Torching the mummy is a good idea but the torch likely won't destroy the undead immediately. We should be prepared for it to retaliate."

Alessandro stands ready with his kukris drawn.

Council of Thieves Maps

As Alessandro feared, torching the mummy is not enough to destroy it immediately. Actually, it seems barely enough to damage it, at the beginning. When the fire spreads through the linen wraps enveloping the mummy, however, the undead catches on fire and starts to suffer continual fire damage. The undead becomes immediately hostile as a result, and prepares for an attack. Fortunately, thanks to Alessandro's warning, the group was ready. The Irises have a chance to strike first.

Fire damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Before entering initiative, I will allow you a full round of actions, after which the mummy will attack. Varius is considered as having already taken his standard action in his turn.

Catina is very mindful of Petals's earlier warnings. "Watch out, don't get hit!" She had hoped that the situation wouldn't turn into them having to hack the creature apart, but she realizes it was too much, to hope for the mummy to go to rest quietly. Aiming to minimize the havoc it can cause, she slams her glaive between its legs and heaves sideways.

Faustinia cringes as the mummy lurches back into aggression, wrinkling her nose at the smell of its dry, withered corpse burning. She tosses the book aside before carefully shuffling backward and casting a spell. Two silvery bolts of force leap from her fingers, arcing silently through the air before slamming into the mummy. She stays silent except for the spell’s necessary invocation, drawing a scroll from her back with a singular and focused expression.

The mummy is still burning, but it stands up.

In doing so, the undead provokes an attack of opportunity.

Faustinia’s eyes widen as the flaming mummy lunges for her. She raises her arms in a futile attempt at defending against his attack.

If it hits:
Her flinching does Faustinia no good. The mummy’s attack causes her invisible magic armor to flash for a moment before easily punching through. It only takes a single blow to the head for Faustinia to collapse to the floor as everything fades…

If the attack doesn't hit:
Faustinia flinches for an attack that never comes. She backs off again and reaches for the pearl in her haversack. Its shine dulls as she absorbs a modicum of power from it, and two more vindictive bolts erupt from her fingertips to smash into the mummy.

Varius scowls as the mummy turns to lunge at Faustinia. Realizing that his only real option at this point is to keep beating on it until it falls, he strikes at it again and again, trying to penetrate its tough defenses. He simply goes into a zone of constant attacks and automatic footwork, trying to let his training overcome his fear, even as the mummy goes for Faustinia.

No one in the party is able to stop the mummy before it knocks Lady Faustinia down with a single, incredibly powerful strike. Only Petals managed to it the undead, but her attack, although very accurate, was too weak to destroy the undead.

⁞⁞⁞⁞ ROUND 4 ⁞⁞⁞⁞

With Lady Faustinia down and fighting a silent battle for her life, the group retaliates. Varius strikes at the mmummy again and again, trying to penetrate its tough defenses. He simply goes into a zone of constant attacks and automatic footwork, trying to let his training overcome his fear. His first attack connects, and deals consistent damage to the undead. The second one misses.

Alessandro attacks immediately after Alessandro with Petals’ earthbreaker.

Earthbreaker melee attack (Critical): 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 11
Earthbreaker damage (Critical): 2d6 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6, 2) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 12

His attack is accurate and powerful, and goes very near to crush the head of the mummy.

Considering that Lady Faustinia is already down when this attack occurs, Alessandro is not flanking the mummy. I will ignore the sneak attack damage and the flanking bonuses to attacks.

Catina tries to end the mummy, but this foe is too tough for her martial abilities, and she misses. In the meantime, Petals heals Lady Faustinia.

The mummy, almost destroyed, is still covered in flame but it does not seem to care about it. It keeps attacking blindly, turning its fury against Alessandro now.

Fire damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Slam attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Slam damage: 1d8 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15

...and another one is down! Alessandro falls to the ground as a result of the incredibly powerful slam of the mummy. Now it's three against one. The mummy seems to be close to destruction, but it's also true that it has infected two members of the party with its mummy rot!

Fear of her friends dying gives Catina a strength of character that she usually lacks. "No," she says at first, a simple statement without true conviction yet. However, as she says the word, the essence of it rings true for her. "NO," she says again, this time directly to the mummy and with more conviction. Without truly thinking about it, she raises the hand holding her glaive, displaying it proudly. The gesture causes her sleeve to drop, also revealing her pewter bracelet with the inlaid songbird. "You're not going to get my friends killed. NO!" At her third negation, a powerful blast of energy radiates forward from Catina, powered by what she feels for her unconscious companions.

Round 4

Faustinia’s bleeding is stopped by Petals’ quick action. However, she still lies unconscious. Unbeknownst to her, the mummy’s cursed disease begins to flow through her veins.

Council of Thieves Maps

Varius' first attack is enough to destroy the mummy and prevent it from claiming more victims. Stabbed to the heart, the undead lets out a silent cry before sagging to the ground, where it soon turns to dust.

Catina and Petals can save their use of channel energy and smite evil, respectively.

Now that the fight is over, the group has to take care of Alessandro and Lady Faustinia.

Please describe your healing. Also, the effects of mummy rot begin (after the healing).

Alessandro (Cha damage): 1d6 ⇒ 6
Alessandro (Con damage): 1d6 ⇒ 6

Faustinia (Cha damage): 1d6 ⇒ 2
Faustinia (Con damage): 1d6 ⇒ 3

The effects of the infamous mummy rot has devastating. They're clear on both Lady Faustinia and Alessandro, but particularly critical in the latter. The skin of the infected has turned gray in patches scattered across their body, face included. Their lips appear dried and their eyes are surrounded by dark circles. Alessandro is also starting to lose his hairs and nails, and the skin of his nose has grown frail, as if it was about to crumble.

Don't worry guys, the end of the dungeon is near! This mummy did cost you a lot indeed. But it also gives you some reward. You gain 400 XP each, which will grant you a level up one out of the Knot.

All she wants to do is collapse in exhaustion, both mental and physical, but no time. Petals will quickly confer with Catina about healing going over everything she knows about healing and mummy rot. Then while Catina thinks about what is best, she'll ask for Varius' help to move them into the next room. Petals is thinking that concentrating would be best in a room without the burning corpse of a mummy. The ventilation is probably horrible down here. making sure they are stable before moving them of course

from previous religion check wrote:

Mummies inflict a particularly (in)famous disease on those who are harmed by them. Mummy rot is both a curse and disease and can only be cured if the curse is first removed, at which point the disease can be magically removed. Even after the curse element of mummy rot is lifted, a creature suffering from it cannot recover naturally over time. Anyone casting a conjuration (healing) spell on the afflicted creature must succeed on a DC 20 caster level check, or the spell is wasted and the healing has no effect. Anyone who dies from mummy rot turns to dust and cannot be raised without a resurrection or greater magic.

Varius tosses his swords to the side as the mummy falls, and he rushes over to Faustinia and Alessandro, looking at the two helplessly. Realizing that Petals needs them moved, he grabs his weapons and hauls them out of the room.

"Please, let me know anything I can do."

Faustinia’s eyes flit open as she’s revived - she looks around in a panic, her consciousness not registering the passed time until she sees that she’s been moved into a safer part of the hallway while the mummy’s burning corpse lies in the other room. Aching, she reaches into her bag and gets out a potion to drink, which soothes the ache in her skull. “Thank you… I’m sorry that I failed to come up with a better way to dispatch that wretch… HRG--”

Faustinia is interrupted as her skin erupts in the mummy’s disease. She is suddenly wracked with thirst, licking her dry lips fruitlessly. She tries to resist scratching the dry, itchy patches of gray skin that have appeared on her. She manages to get to her feet and dust herself off. “I hope this nightmare is almost over. Should we investigate that room the mummy was guarding? That mass of clutter is bound to hide something interesting.”

Per Catina’s post in Discussion, I’ll go ahead and roll her channels for healing:

I'll also take our recently-looted potion; Alessandro, let me know if you'd like my potion of cure serious wounds!

Petals spells are more illusion and misdirection. So using hers on healing seems like a good idea. That was the order I rolled them in, so if at any of those points you are healed up, just stop her. And let me know to add a spell back.

Petals, you can save the 3rd cure light wounds. After the channel energies and two cures, I'm at 20/22 hp. Max HP reduces from 38 to 22 from the Con loss.

Catina frets over her downed friends, letting the energy of Shelyn radiate out from her in a more controlled and soothing manner. She reaches down to help Alessandro up. "The mummy," she replies to his question on what happened. "It was a far stronger opponent than we though. Please don't blame yourself, Faustinia. We were all there, and if it hadn't been for your book, we might even be in worse shape." She checks the effect of the mummy's disease on Alessandro and Faustinia, but quickly finds that there's nothing she can do. "Please, just hold on for a bit longer. Once we're out of here, we'll get you to the temple. There's definitely going to be able to help you there. For now, try now to get hurt. Err... more. As Petals says, I think your body will begin to reject healing energies..."

After that, she helps the search of the room.
