Lorenzo sidestepped as the little blobs fell from the sewer ceiling.
Noticing the splashy sounds and their legs, he tried to warn the others, "This is more than just gunk. Careful."
He then attacked the little insect/blob with his sword and shield.

"Lorenzo, here. Hold on..." She clear some of the rubble from the chest, and finds within some gold pieces and jewelry. "Jewels!" she exclaims, trying to keep her voice to a whisper. "They're quite pretty, aren't they..." Knowing that they should keep moving, Catina quickly pockets the contents of the chest, and is ready to resume walking.

Catina is more intent on looking behind her, than looking above. That, and her hood might have impaired her hearing. Feeling the oozes drop on her is a complete surprise. She utters a shrill yelp, cut off abruptly as she clasps a hand in front of her mouth.
She shakes to get the ooze creatures off of her shoulders and on to the ground. "Ooze bugs," she whispers to the others when she's recovered from the initial shock. Then, more to herself: "Aren't they marvelous...?" Feeling the sting from their acid on her shoulders, burning through the cloak, she realizes that the torbles are not just pretty and fascinating, but also dangerous. She draws the dagger from her belt and crouches low, to stab at one of them.

Added the contents of the chest to my character sheet. Also added them to the loot sheet to remember that we have to appraise them.
Additionally, I can't imagine Catina bringing a glaive to the meeting with Janiven, and having it with her during this trip in the sewers. I went with just a dagger attack, because of that.

After defeating the torbles, you keep pushing forward, hoping to reach the exit as soon as possible. Feel free to use healing items on yourselves before proceeding. As the torbles stop attacking, Catina drops to her haunches and let's her dagger fall to the floor. She listlessly pokes at the colorful but lifeless creatures left there, the ones she killed.
As soon as someone calls out to her or touches her, she rouses from her vigil. She picks up her dagger and forcefully wipes a sleeve of her shrug at her eyes and cheeks. "It's nothing, I'm OK." Before the group continues, she notes the wounds the others sustained from the ooze bugs. She hesitates for a moment, then speaks. "I might be able to do something about our wounds. That is, if Shelyn is still with me, after what we've just done." She pauses again, hesitating, then holds out her two long-fingered hands. "We'll need to be holding hands. That's how I've been taught," she says by way of apology.
With everyone holding hands, Catina says a short prayer. "Shelyn, your rose is eternal. You mend what is broken, and make it more beautiful. ... Despite the... suffering that I've caused, I'm really trying to make things better, I do. Please bless us with your gift, so that we may help you in your work." With that, warmth spreads out from Catina's hands, positive energy that soothes and heals.

Lorenzo saw how Faustina wiggled away when Catina asked everyone to join hands. Lady Faustina ended up opposite the tiefling, between himself and the halfling.

He was going to apologize when the warmth spread to him, instantly healing him and washing over his heart. He stammered, "Tha--thank you."
GM Giuseppe |
As both arcane and divine words fill the stinky air of Westcrown sewers, those who you heard talking before become immediately silent.
Suddenly you can hear quite clearly the sound of several people coming your way. As soon as they reach the area of your light, Lorenzo sees three men clad in what appears to be the intimidating armor of the Order of the Rack, although a closer examination instantly reveals that those men are not wearing a full plate armor like proper Hellknights; they’re actually wearing a boiled leather with chainmail reinforcements. Each of them has a longsword in his right hand, and a crossbow is tied to their belt along with a small container filled with bolts. They wear no helm, and hence their faces are clearly visible: they’re all young guys, between 16 and 23 in age. They’ve all distinctive Cheliaxan facial features and short, raven hairs. One of them holds a torch in his left hand.
As soon as they spot you, the men smirk grimly. “Lets get them!” they say, longwords at hands, ready to jump on you.

Lorenzo whispers a quick prayer, "For the Heart."
His longsword and shield are up and striking at the men in front of him. he once more yells for the others to stay behind him.
"Catina, these aren't cats. they are two-legged vermin!"

Catina's shock at seeing the Hellknights, boys still, is nothing compared to what she feels at Lorenzo's remark. She looks at him like she's never seen him before, and a number of objections come to mind. Vermin?! Is that really how he sees people? And me? Aren't they Wiscrani like us, who we should care about? Is this anything better than open rebellion? Blood in the streets, or in the sewer? All she manages, though, is a feeble "But, but..." ...are they any different from us, just doing what they feel is the right thing?
She looks from Lorenzo to Sev, who seems to act out of desperation, to Faustinia, throwing around magic with the cool attitude as if she's never done anything else.
Delay for now, since the bandits will act before me anyway. Also, being at the back of the line there's not a lot Catina can contribute currently. Also, please don't forget the +1 to Attack from Bless, everyone. Only the eagle isn't affected.

“Argh!” On of the Hellknights is hit by Sev’s arrow and screams his pain, his stalwart resolve suddenly fading. Quickly after, Lorenzo strikes true with his longsword, causing a slashing wound in another Hellknight’s arm. The wound quickly spreads and the Hellknight looks like he’s going to fall very soon. And actually, he falls in a matter of instants, collapsing to the floor: Sev’s arrow and Lorenzo’s sword were too much for this young armiger to handle. The other two Hellknights widen their eyes in disbelief. One of them seems to be about to vomit.
Encouraged by his success, the young paladin hence tries to follow his first attack with a shield bash, stepping forward, but the Hellknight’s armor, although only boiled leather, protects his shaken wearer.
In the meantime, a bead of light forms next to the Hellknight who has just been saved by his armor. The light forms into a heavenly eagle with golden eyes. It immediately rips into the man in front of it, tearing with beak and claw. The following scene is very coarse: the celestial eagle pops the man’s eye with its beak, then completes the job with its talons. Another Hellknights falls unconscious to the ground.
The last Hellknight standing dodges Faustinia’s acid dart and looks in Lorenzo’s eyes with burning hate. He throws himself at Lorenzo with fury. “For Westcrown!” he screams as he launches himself at the paladin. Lorenzo, however, easily parries the violent but predictable attack with his shield, taking advantage of the cover provided by the wall.

Lady Faustinia Xerysis |
Faustinia winces as the eagle tears into the young man. She had seen violence before, of course - live long enough in Westcrown and you were bound to - but never quite so close up. And by her own actions, no less. She exhales a shaky breath, and aims another dart of acid at the remaining boy.
Hearing Catina's protests behind her, Faustinia risks a quick look back and says, "I know it's hard, but you don't want to find out what they would do if they caught us. Stay strong, dear." Faustinia turns back toward the fight, as much to not be caught off guard as to hide the nervousness creeping into her expression.

Lorenzo Mancini |
Lorenzo winced at the savage eagle plucked out an eye. This was real. Another man was bleeding on cause of his sword. And Catina...
He knew that he would have a lot of explaining to do. But he was doing this so he had a chance to explain and Catina have a chance to listen.
"Good. Keep watching behind us lest we become trapped. It seems there are more people looking for us."
Glad to have Faustina help steel the girl, "Yeah, what she said. Stay strong."

Round 1
=======
Catina, feeling intensely along with the young ambitious Hellknights, looks like she might be sick as well. She hears people talking about her and nods, but the words don't really get through to her. She stumbles forward to make way for Faustinia, and puts a hand on Sev's shoulder, perhaps seeking shelter with someone reminding her of better times. "Poor fellow, you must be so scared. Please don't grow jaded and hard. I think you're really brave to be joining us like this..."
Bit of luck on Sev, he rolls all d20's twice this turn.

Sev. |
Under normal circumstances Sev would blush when Catina shares her power with him, but he's so full of adrenaline and nerves all he can do is nod his thanks and he tries to swallow the lump in his throat before he turns and takes a step closer to the remaining enemy and draws his bow, firing another arrow.

The Hellknight parries both of Lorenzo’s attack with his longsword. He seems to be gaining confidence as he manages to hold Lorenzo back with relative ease, and that impression is immediately confirmed when he proves able to dodge Faustinia’s acid dart and Sev’s arrow. Before Sev could even fire his bow, the armiger tries to hit him, but the wall protects the halfling. Faced with Lorenzo’s opposition, the Hellknight tries to swing his sword at the paladin, but Lorenzo is quick to react and parries the attack with his shield. “What are you? Are you some kind of f&&~ing Andoren spies? I will kill you, if it’s the last thing I do! Death to the traitors!” He makes sure to shout so loud as he can: his voice echoes in the tunnels, and you end up hoping no one is there to hear.

Lorenzo replied to the thug, "No! We are those that want to return Westcrown what it used to be. A GLORIOUS city."

" There's no need to shout, boy, " Faustinia scolds, nervously peeking down the tunnels as if she could watch for the word finding their way to more trouble. She points again, and seeing a fortuitous gap in the fray, lets loose yet another acidic missile.
We'll have to move quickly after this. Hopefully no one else heard that, but we can't count on it.

Even though Sev’s arrows are inaccurate despite Catina’s divine assistance, the Hellknight must lower his defenses in order to dodge them, thus allowing Lorenzo to breach through his guard and hit him with a powerful blow of his sword. The Hellknight manages to parry the shield attack putting his sword between himself and Lorenzo, but Faustinia’s acid dart catches him unaware. The dart of acid hits the Hellknight’s unprotected face and burns it instantly, sending the young armiger to the ground almost immediately: at first he tries to wash the acid away from his face in the sewer’s murky water, but one second after he stops fighting for his handsome face. His arms fall down like useless sacks and his whole body stops moving. The Hellknight has been defeated.

Lorenzo Mancini |
With the last of guards falling, Lorenzo breathed a sigh of relief. He immediately turned to his companions, "Everybody OK? Anyone else following us?"
tag?
He then looked to see if he knew any of the youths that wanted them captured. They are my age. Just made the wrong choices. This could have been me.
Lorenzo then took matters into his own hands again. Hoping they did not meet further resistance, he ushered the others forward, "C'mon, we must get out of these sewers and to safety."
He then mumbled, "Janiven never told me how it was..."
tag?
Lorenzo is not adventuring savvy and is not into looting but let that prevent the rest of you.
Catina Bon Durati |
Catina stares at the Hellknight's bodies. Something tells her to check up on them, see if they're still alive, but she can't make herself move forward, closer to the carnage. She presses against the wall, hugging herself and chattering. "We... We killed them. This was just supposed to be about getting allies, right? No open rebellion, and such? And now we murdered three people." She still stares at the bodies, horrified and quite close to tears.
Lady Faustinia Xerysis |
Faustinia sighs with relief once the fight is over, although the sight of the acid splashing in the young man's face does turn her stomach. "I'm alright, Lorenzo, thank you. I don't know if anyone else is here, but you're right that we should keep moving. One moment, though."
The older woman approaches the downed bodies, hefting the one she just hit with all her strength to make sure his face is no longer in the water. Breathing heavily from the effort, she says, "Lorenzo, would you be so kind as to assist me?" Once the youths are safe from the threat of drowning in the sewer water, Faustinia examines them to see if any are still alive. She unbuckles their weapon belts, setting them aside and checking for any other useful portables. "We should see if they have anything useful - namely, information about us, or anyone else they might be tracking down. And if we take their weapons, they'll be less inclined to follow us immediately. We should at least toss them into the water if we don't take them ourselves."
Faustinia will check them for smaller items: potions, weapons, written notes, etc. I would also like to know if they're still alive.
Once she's done, she cleans the blood and muck from her hands and clothes with another simple bit of magic, frowning and wrinkling her nose. "Unpleasant business," she comments, turning away from the mangled bodies. "Catina, these boys were Hellknights, or at least working for them. Order of the Rack, if you recall. That's not just a scary name, it's where we would have ended up if we hadn't defended ourselves." Faustinia takes in a deep breath through her nose, then exhales a sigh, her face softening. With a kinder voice, she adds, "I know it's hard, but we didn't have any other options. It's admirable that you don't want to hurt people, Catina. We'll do our best not to fight, but right now we need to move. Are you alright to go?"
Sev. |
"Y-you th-think they might have information on us!?" Sev says as the lump in his throat finally disappears and he can speak again. His nerves take over again and he starts shaking nervously.
If that's true I'm going to have to improve my aim.
Seeing Faustinia look over the bodies Sev leans down and helps as much as he can, fitting his small hands into pockets much easier than the humans can. As the mage explains the business of Hellknights Sev nods his head along with her.
"They s-say they have to swallow acid or boiling water to even b-become a Hellknight. They aren't good people!" Even still he looks down at the men he'd tried to shoot and frowns, hoping killing doesn't become something they have to do often.
"L-let's hurry and go. Who knows if there are more people trying to find us!"
