Oh, I was under the impression that the leader spoke to us in Common.
Bizzle instead does nothing more but turn to his friends, shrugs his shoulders, and steps back behind the others.

Scratching his chin, Baaldryn speaks again,"Seems we are at a loss here. I can understand your tongue but I do not speak it. And it appears you all do not speak the common speech. Well I guess I will try to gesture and speak to you. We fought some giant-kin and giant birds near a damn. Do you know of this?" and he uses his hands to gesture his speech....

George sees the vicious blows that rain down on Oxirane, even from the prone troll and thinks that entering that melee would be suicide. The dwarf gives as good as he got, but George sees that the antlered dog and the troll are looking for another salvo of attacks so the tiefling reaches over to an efreeti urn strapped to his back and pulls the stopper.
A huge cloud of smoke erupts into the air, filling a 25' radius area, engulfing him, Oxirane and the enemies in smoke that obscures all vision. Everyone except George can't even see their hand in front of their face in the cloud. George keeps an eye on the troll master with his Goz Mask as the rest of the party handles the troll lackeys outside the cloud.

@GM: The Eversmoking Bottle isn't like normal fog. It is total concealment even if you are 5' from each other.
I'm not sure that's true. I think the "totally obscures" language refers to the normal vision-blocking of fog past 5 feet, but I guess it's up to interpretation. Also, re-sealing the bottle is a standard action.

![]() |

@Oxirane: Good point on the standard action, forgot Command Word (despite being talking which is a free action) is a standard action. But, it is 50% concealment. The spell used for Eversmoking Bottle is Pyrotechnics and Pyrotechnics has no language to suggest that there is a part of the cloud with 20% concealment within 5' and even says "All sight, even darkvision, is ineffective in or through the cloud." Other cloud and fog spells contain the specific language of "A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can't use sight to locate the target)."
@GM: Ignore the bomb.

![]() |

*cough, cough* "I'm doing fine, not a scratch. Just get this blasted smoke out of my eyes!"

Yes, I knew that the smoke gave total concealment (50% miss chance). I rolled the miss-chances but I forgot to mention the cut-off.
Shrakas calls out, "Down, down!" to the dog creature and to the remaining troll he commands, "Stand still or they'll kill ya! We surrender! F%%%ing pinkskins!"
Of course, some of you can understand Giant but still can't speak it.

![]() |

George, still invisible, will keep an eye on the downed troll and antlered dog in the smoke until it dissipates in a few minutes, but he will hold off on any attacks. "I will watch them, Oxirane, if you want to seek solace outside of the cloud. It should clear in a bit."
"Open the door and a few windows and it might clear faster." he yells to Baaldryn.

![]() |

Haha! They wisely gave up! Now, if we could only talk to them. Then again, we could simply go find that troublesome ettin or whatever it was and continue our mission.

EndlessForms |

Crammed into an empty beer barrel in the northwestern storeroom are a badly torn explorer’s outfit, three broken potion bottles, and an oilskin-wrapped notebook that logs the discoveries of the half-orc scout Hagal. Hagal has noted the location of the Thassilonian ruin to the west, where he spotted ogres laboring to uncover more of the site while directed by an ettin with a single tattoo on her face. The notebook also contains dozens of other observations of giant movements, construction, and plans that he would have returned to Councilor Kalla, had the trolls not captured him.
You now have some clear directions to the ruins and since you can't communicate with the trolls effectively, it might be best just to leave them and move on unless you have other plans. Guess you guys will be picking up some scrolls of tongues in the future!

![]() |

"Hmm. Why the sudden interest in the ruins by the giants? Could they have discovered something about them we don't know yet? We'd better get going before they loot the whole place."

![]() |

George will leave Invisibility and bow to the troll underchief before following his brethren as they exeunt the building, searching for the paths to the ruins.
A quick bonk on the head keeps him from being to solemn as Mr. Chips scampers out of his cloak. "Ook!"

![]() |

Siruss bobs his head as the trolls surrender, but then shakes it and shouts to his nagaji caravan as they appear to spontaneously return.
As he continues to apparently shout, the assorted najagi bow low and begin opening the windows to bring in fresh air, or at least as much fresh air as can be found in a lair inhabited by trolls.
"Yesss, what of Ssssscout Hagal? Wasssss he eaten by trollssssessss?"
Siruss gestures to the troll chieftain who is unable to understand him and laments his lack of preparedness as a Trade Prince in not procuring the appropriate means to speak foreign tongues.
(Sadly, scrolls were all consumed in prior scenarios and I forgot to resupply)
Siruss also nods at the comments about the ettin and the giants digging in the ruins.
"Ssssirusss, masssster of lore, sseeeem to remember connection between giantssss and Thasssssilon... hmmm, what isssss..."

Siruss indeed recalls that giants were used in building many of the grand Thasillonian monuments and cities but does not note any particular connection with this site and these giantkin.
Following the directions, you make your way towards the ruins....
The muddy path leads into a large circular clearing, free of the boulders and trees that adorn most of the mountainside. In the center of the clearing, the last embers of a fire burn underneath charred logs. A haphazard pile of grimy furs and skins covers the ground near the fire pit. To the north, a ten-foot-wide tunnel leads into the mountain, but a pile of rubble blocks the tunnel's entrance entirely.
You can see below that the ettin Pahg-Vahr you were warned about rests here along with three ogres. You can hear a pair of the ogres speaking to each other.
Your comprehend languages would have worn off by now but assuming someone puts it back up to understand them:
One says, "I could swear it was lookin' at me."
The other responds, "Wasn't lookin' at you. Didn't have a head."
"I felt it lookin' at me."
New map is up. Feel free to position yourselves and/or reveal yourselves however you want. You can easily sneak up to the trees and boulders at the bottom without being noticed.

Baaldryn will move to the trees and rock outcropping to see what the giant-kin do.
