Ember recognizes the tentacled monster as a particularly impressive specimen of naunet protean, a type of chaotic-aligned outsider.

They have a whole laundry list of interesting abilities. By priority, what kind of things would you like to know?

Several members of the party recognize the smaller elementals as elemental wysps. Octarus and Jamila believe they've been corrupted somewhat by their exposure to this environment.

They're basically servitor elementals. They like to buff allied creatures and can sacrifice themselves to heal allied creatures. As a standard action, anyone can make a Bluff, Diplomacy, Knowledge (planes), Intimidate, or Use Magic Device to snap them out of their corruption.

The protean rears back and spits a ball of acidic energy at Jamila.

My priority is 1) any particularly infamous abilities (like basilisks turning people to stone), 2) any vital defenses to know about (aka, the easiest way to kill them) and then 3) anything really funny / unique about their stat block (like ghoran's "deliciousness" weakness).

Krakos will concentrate to alter his subjective gravity making it so he slides to join Rhyol.

But he instead just remains rooted to the floor, grunting he'll draw out his longbow and watch wearily the tentacle monster.


Naunet proteans are known for their chaos-infused tentacles that can drive victims mad (temporarily) and their ability to adapt to overcome the natural defenses of opponents. They have DR/lawful, resistance to electricity and sonic, and immunity to acid and polymorph. They are resistant to magic (moderate SR). They are not known for being particularly delicious. =P

The air wysp shudders at Jamila's call as the red whorls within its currents disappear.

Octarus looks back and forth between the tentacle beast and the wisps, wondering what to do. Finally deciding on an action, he flys towards the center floating stone (40' single move) and unleashes a blast of water at the tentacle beast.

Octarus's blast of pressurized water splashes harmlessly off the protean's carapace. The beast glares at him with red glowing eyes.

Even with Zephyr's help Ember isn't able to reach the corrupted fire wysp. It continues to bob in place and hum an erratic tune. The DC is 22. =(

This guy lasted a lot longer when I played this. =P

Rhyol, Krakos, and Jamila finish the thrashing protean off in a flurry of blades, conjured weaponry, and fiery/wormy slams. With it slain, Octarus is released from its grasp and its remains drift to central platform 'below'.

Encounter over! Those learned among you believe that, with the protean defeated, you should be able to close this planar rift from the other side.

Oh! That de-escalated a lot quicker than I thought it might!

What is the process to close the rift?


Returning to the other side of the rift with the restored wysps in tow, the party finds that the roiling incursion of color where the portal was slows and contracts upon itself, forming a vibrating sphere. Although the disruption beyond its otherworldly borders has abated, the dangerous rift remains.

Controlling the plane of air in such a way to close the vulnerable rift requires four Knowledge (planes), Knowledge (arcana), or Spellcraft checks. Octaris can use Use Magic Device. You can aid another but you cannot take 10. There are consequences for failure so I suggest you plan your skill checks carefully.

In the interest of not dragging this out, everyone just roll four applicable checks and I'll sort out the results.

With their collective knowledge of the Plane of Air, Ember and Jamila will the elemental plane to knit itself back together. Slowly at first the tear becomes smaller and smaller until it's closed entirely, winking out of existence. The cyclone below collapses, releasing a sound reminiscent of a loud sigh. Only the hole where the upper floors of the towers once stood lasts as a testament to the planar intrusion that once threatened.

Where the rift once was a pale pristine gem drifts through the air.
