Adhesive Spittle Questions

Liberty's Edge

1. If I understand the spell description correctly, casting the spell is a standard action, and spitting the tanglefoot bag is also a standard action. Therefore I cannot do both in the same round.

2. Does spitting the tanglefoot bag provoke an attack of opportunity?

Thank you.

Once during this spell's duration, you can spit a viscous liquid as a standard action. This liquid functions as a tanglefoot bag, except you do not have to make a successful attack roll to hit your target. The DCs to counteract this adhesive (to avoid being stuck to the floor, to fly, to break the adhesive, or to cast a spell) use the spell's DC rather than a tanglefoot bag's normal DCs. The adhesive persists for 2d4 rounds after you spit it.

1. Correct.
2. I'd say no, because it's not actually a ranged attack like a tanglefoot bag normally is, nor is it casting a spell.

This is an odd one.

1. Technically, I agree that a 1st level caster could not use the spell based on the RAW. I would hope this is an error on Paizo's part and a caster can cast and spit in the same round. One way to determine if this is an error is to find out if there are any other 1st level spells that are unusable by 1st level characters? A spell unusable at the level it is available is not consistent with spell casting paradigm, but could be possible.

2. I would say spitting does provoke an AoO because it is a ranged attack...that happens to automatically hit. But an argument can be made for it not provoking, so I would welcome the PDT to weigh in.

It's not the only one, but there aren't many. Targeted Bomb Admixture and Bomber's Eye are the ones I know of. And guess what all three have in common? They're Alchemist spells.

While I agree that these data points to suggest it is by design, the two you mentioned are categorically different as they are simply buffs. You get the full bonus from both Extracts, you simply don't have time to throw a bomb. With adhesive spittle you specifically can't do what the spell says you can do.

Any confirmation from the PDT or other authority that these spells are working as intended?

I'm not aware of any official statement on the matter.

The Concordance

The "Range 15ft." means the opponent or an ally?
If it means an ally, allowing him to spit in his turn, there's no discription about the spittle's range.
If it means the opponent, I think the spell allow you to spit with a free action in the same turn after you cast the spell, just as other charge spells.
