Hagnar Grimstone |

"Come, miss, no call for such meekness. I have seen your magic with my own eyes, and you are a crack shot with the crossbow! You may be standing in the back, but only because you are more effective back there! We need you with us, miss." Hagnar says with his best smile. Which is, for a dwarf, mostly teeth and beard...

Natalie Labelle |

Natalie doesn't say anything further as she ducks her head back into her inn room, closing the door behind her. After a few minutes, it opens up again, as she's completely laden with all of her gear and new purchases. It's obviously a great deal more than she's used to carrying around.
"...um...won't it, um...be dark when we get to the tower, then?" She asks.

Hagnar Grimstone |

"That's the plan, I think," Hagnar says, eyeing the overloaded pack on the petite woman's back. "Sort of surprise the little blighters. 'Course, they can see in the dark so not quite sure how that will help, but it's what the others are thinking. Hey, maybe they'll listen to you if'n you tell them it would be better to wait to sunrise and attack 'em during the day, when you humies can see as good as them goblies. Whaddya think?"
"Oh, and why don't ya let us help out and carry some of that stuff or you may be my size by the end of this adventure! Hahahaha!!" he laughs heartily.

Zirrel Larenethdren |

"Yes, let us share the load. I'm sure the others will be happy to help considering they will be enjoying the results. At least, I assume you are carrying provisions for the entire group. You don't look to be a big eater to me."
"I would certainly agree if you chose to dispute a night-time raid on a goblin stronghold. As the new guy, I did not feel I should be arguing with established members."

![]() |

My apologies for absence and unavailability. Thanksgiving had a lot of traveling and family ongoings that demanded attention. From what I can tell, Reigar is off finding the smith while the rest are talking at the tavern. So, I will post my actions finding the smith.

![]() |

In the interest of moving things along, I'm going to handle Reigar's activities as Flex time and assume that nothing he is doing will keep him from accompanying the others.
Rafe looks at the bullet with a practiced eye, then shrugs. "Yah, I kin make them. How many did yew need?"
By the time you are ready to leave for the tower, the weather has stated to turn gloomy. Clouds have moved in and a cold drizzle is falling. The drizzle imparts no penalties on combat, but does make everything thoroughly wet and generally miserable.

Natalie Labelle |

Natalie looks extremely confused by what the elf and dwarf are saying, but doesn't object when they take some of her load from her. She hasn't the faintest idea where they'd gotten it in their heads that they're part of an actual group - as far as she's seen, they were merely individual mercenaries working together for the sake of profit. She was just trying to show that she had her uses.
Once they set off, the quiet girl pulled her cloak hood over her to shield herself from the rain. She hoped that the rain wouldn't get so hard that it soaked into the food. This really seemed like a bad idea to her, fighting at night. At the very least she doesn't know how useful she'll be able to be if she can't see the enemy.

Lucian Faucon |

Again, as I said in the discussion thread, we met Jadale at mid-day, and the tower is a half hour journey from the keep. I do not believe that the majority of the battle will be at night.
Lucian continues on through the rain, not bothering to raise his hood as he does not wish to impair his vison as the group travels toward the tower.
"When we were there this morning, there were four goblins a top the tower. We should do what we can to eliminate them from cover if possible before engaging the others."

Hagnar Grimstone |

"If the Master Craftsman guides my hand, I am a fair shot with my sling. He even gives my stones an extra...push...sometimes. I prefer face-to-face meetings with the green-skins - but dead is dead!" Hagnar almost seems happy talking about battling the goblins. He isn't much for stealth but he will certainly be good for storming the watchtower!
"Was there any other way in to the tower? Perhaps we should attack from two directions at once - a surprise attack from the front and an assault force from behind..." the dwarf suggests.

Lucuis |

Lucius will troop along with the rest, suffering the weather in silence. Kinda sucks, but it's a worthy job. he thinks to himself.
"I don't remember more than one door. I was thinking of climbing up he side, but I don't know that it would be possible without clearing any guarding the outside. I'm a bit concerned about how we'll break the door down. "

![]() |

Thanks GM! And if Flex time I guess I will respond to the group.
Rain drizzles of in a steady stream from the brim of the gnome's hat. Despite the dreary weather he is still peppy though. He trudges along from the rear, thinking in silence of the Tower that he was warned about and this group of potential friends. He listens idly to the chatter of the group and their plans to enter the tower and overcome the resistance of any goblins. "Ahem, if I may so kindly suggest. Dear dwarf, you may be good with a sling, however, I would not mind ridding the world of the disgusting things myself. They do pose an eyesore to myself. Plus, with my musket it shan't be a truly difficult challenge. Though again, I am here to lend my services as I am not quite sure what plans you fine gents may have come up with this particular task."

Hagnar Grimstone |

"Aye. And leaving a stout door on the watchtower will be good for us once we control it, so let's not go breaking it unless we have to! So, do we attack from two sides - everyone using ranged attacks until the goblins come out to get us, then we take the fight to them?" Hagnar says, twisting his moustache to wring the water from it.

Zirrel Larenethdren |

"Precisely! Now, I wonder if this dreary day might help us get closer to the tower - it certainly won't help our bows. Do you suppose we could get most of the group relatively close without them realizing, and then let one or two of us proceed as if alone, to draw them out against what appears easy prey?"

Lucian Faucon |

Agreed.

Lucian Faucon |

What's the distance associated with each hex?

![]() |

Price for what (to him) amounts to bits of scrap metal will be 1 sp per bullet.
Yes, you can move through the trees.
One hex is equal to 10 yards. Sorry bout that.

Hagnar Grimstone |

Hagnar looks at the Ranger and the Fighter for their thoughts, asking "Looks like one group to the north and one to the southeast let's us attack from two angles and keeps us close to range. Maybe Lucian, Reigar, and Fergor be the shooters? Miss Natalie, do you have any ranged spells that can take out those goblins atop the watchtower?"
"I'm a bit slower than you long-legged folks, so I will head to the north and be ready to hit them from behind when the goblins come out. Lucuis and Zirrel, do you want to join me? Maybe Fergor, too, if the mage has any magic missiles up her sleeve."

Lucian Faucon |

"Sounds like a decent plan." the ranger says retrieving his bow.

Natalie Labelle |

"...no, um..." The noblewoman reaches and clutches onto the crossbow swinging from her belt. "I, um, don't really...know any, um...evocations...I'm not, um, really a good shot...t-that goblin before, it, um, was j-just a lucky shot..."

Lucian Faucon |

Lucian smiles trying to reassure the young wizardess, " You have a crossbow, so that sounds like you are with Reigar and I. Let's just hope that you can get lucky again...or that a few goblins are simply not lucky, either way as long as we end up with some dead goblins."
Turing quickly to Fergor, "I see that you have a bow, but you strike me as the type that would rather have a blade in your hand, which group do you intend to go with?"

![]() |

Alright, I will just play it as I bought 10 as I intended to do.
Reigar nods in silence as he listens to the group prepare and formulate an attack. He pulls his musket from it's strap on his back and ensures it is loaded and ready. "Aye, I shall see to it that we provide quite an adequate attack and allow you all to get in close. Come, let's try to catch them on their heels, shall we go to the north?" Reiger will move silently and keeping even lower, hoping the weather will provide cover to not be noticed while peering up to see any movement or foes.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

![]() |

Goblin Perception checks: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
Perhaps it is the bad weather, or maybe it is that the goblins don't expect that anyone would be fool enough to be out in this weather, but they don't seem to notice your approach. You are able to get within bowshot (100 feet) of the tower itself without an alarm being raised.
For anyone wishing to fire on the four goblins atop the tower (which, despite the illustration, has a flat roof), remember your basic geometry. In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. So...
If you are 100 feet from the tower, and the tower is 50 feet tall, then the hypotenuse is 112 feet. That is the distance to the goblins atop the tower.

Lucian Faucon |

Lucian draws back his bow taking careful aim at one the goblins atop the tower, but his shot is foiled by the wind and rain.
"Damnit." he mutters under his breath. "Hope the others are ready." the ranger says reaching back into his quiver for another arrow.
Longbow Shot: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 - 2 = 9 (2nd range increment)
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7

Natalie Labelle |

Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 - 2 = 7
The distance is far too far for Natalie to properly hit her own target, the bolt flying off into the rain. She reloads, wondering how long it will take the goblins on the tower to notice that they're under attack. If only she had time to focus on her spell, she could have given her crossbow a small enhancement.
Well, she can try that right now - casting on the fly is difficult, but not impossible.

![]() |

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 1 - 3 = 17 I believe mine would be third range increment. Also DM wasn't sure if you were doing this before, but my attacks are supposed to be counted as ranged against touch AC.
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Reigar watches the fighter's arrow get carried away by the wind. He lifts his hat in the air, looking at it intently then sets it back upon his head. [b] "Don't forget to compensate for conditions my dear companions." [/dice] Reigar then pulls up his musket, mustering his ability to keep it steady in the current weather. He squints his eyes, searching for a goblin to move closer to the edge. He sees one, takes a slow breath and squeezes the trigger of his trusty musket letting the roar of the shot ring in the air as the bullet is sent flying through the rain to an unsuspecting and foul creature.

Lucian Faucon |

Reigar, it is -2 for each range increment beyond the first. (40 ft increment for a musket, so yes, you would be in the third increment at 112 ft.)
Unless you spend grit, firearms only target touch AC within the first range increment, otherwise they target normal AC. As a result you would have 1d20 + 5 + 1(hatred) - 4(two range increments beyond 1st) for your attack vs. Normal AC.
Fortunately, it doesn't really matter for this case as you still likely rolled well enough to hit and kill a goblin.:)

Hagnar Grimstone |

Sitting just inside the treeline 30 yards to the north of the tower, Hagnar hears the unmistakable crraacckkkk!!!!!! of Reigar's musket followed by the impact of a body from the other side of the tower, and grins at his companions. "It's begun. Now we just wait to hear a goblin warcry, and we hit 'em from behind!! he whispers as he pulls his warhammer from it's sling on his back and straps his shield firmly in place.

![]() |

When we established at the beginning the guns conditions I was under the impression we are in an emerging guns world as described in Ultimate Combat. In that world of guns it's vs Touch AC regardless of spending grit. Thanks for clarifying though. Forgot how messy guns can get, my apologies.

Lucian Faucon |

Emerging Firearms only speaks to the rarity of guns. The musket is an "early firearm" thus the only one range increment touch AC. "Advanced firearms" such as an actual rifle would use touch AC regardless of range increment.

![]() |

I'm almost as good with a bow as I am with my blade, but I prefer to hack the heads of my opponents off. Fergor draws his shield and Bastard sword out and looks to the rest. Now if you don't mind. Launch your assault from afar so that I may rush out and cleave some skulls please.

![]() |

I'm afraid that Lucian is correct, Reigar. Apologies for any misunderstanding. That said, remember that armor functions more as DR than a defense. There is no Touch AC (or more correctly, all Defense scores ARE Touch AC). I will allow ballistic damage to bypass ordinary armor DR, however. Magical armor keeps it's enhancement bonus as DR.
Lucian and Natalie release their shots, each missing their target, but Reigar's aim is true and one of the goblins tumbles from the tower, shrieking as it falls to its death. This alerts the others, and the result is a riot of activity as six goblins surge from the base of the tower brandishing dogcutters.
Fergor: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Reigar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Zirrel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Lucuis: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Hagnar: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Natalie: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Lucian: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Goblins: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
There are six goblins about the base of the tower (100 feet away), and three at the top of the tower. Everyone except Lucius and Hag nar are up.

Lucian Faucon |

Lucian steps forward, hoping to split the group of goblins exiting the tower and takes aim at one of the goblins atop the tower.
Move forward 15 ft, which will put me in one range increment of the top for a longbow.
Longbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 - Potential Crit (Crit Defense DC = 26)
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Not sure if I'm read the crit rules for wounds/vigor right, but if the goblin in question fails the Crit Defense check, I believe he will take an additional 2d8 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5 Vigor/Wounds + 3 Wounds for the x3 weapon.

Lucian Faucon |

*laughs* Of course you are right. That's what I get for trying to post before leaving for dinner. Whtknt, please excuse my stupidity.
