For convenience's sake, let's say that you continue to the door that's just to the east of C13.
C14: This chamber's door is made of thick, dark iron etched with arcane symbols.
Agnes Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Agnes can't seem to determine their meaning.
The door seems to be unlocked...

"Should we knock?" Hotspur asks in a whisper.

![]() |

Wayreth sighs and opens the door.

![]() |

Ethendril tests the metal gate to see if he could easily open it.
He shakes it a bit, then says "This is pretty sturdy. Wayreth, can you open it for us please?"
str check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

![]() |

Once the metal gate is unlocked, Ethendril again takes the point.
"You are very skilled at that, Wayreth. I know you are very stealthy, but a good locksmith makes this easier for all of us," he compliments the rogue.
He moves into the next area beyond the gate.
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Hotspur follows Ethendril.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

"Heh, well, truth is with a little bit of training, lock-picking mostly becomes a matter of persistence and time. A better locksmith would have done that alot quicker," the rogue replies with a sheepish grin.

The party enters the room. (C14) There are runes on the walls within this chamber. (Does anyone speak Abyssal?) There is also a pit in the northeast corner of the room.
Before you have a chance to act, a voice calls out from the pit.
"Here to gloat over me some more, wizard? And without your usual greeting? You'll play that game one time too often, and on that day I’ll enjoy supping on your entrails."

![]() |

Harlis looks with the pit in suspicion and the profane writing of the runes. "Best to have have some knowledge before figuratively leaping here." He mutters lowly hoping the voice wouldn't overhear. He then calls upon Iomedae with a prayer of comprehension.
Casting Comprehend Languages to look over the runes.

No knowledge for me...
Ethendril shoulders his way to the front.
"We are not Hunclay. Who are you? Are you captive to his magic?" the paladin asks.

![]() |

"We are not Hunclay. Who are you? Are you captive to his magic?" the paladin asks.
A goat-headed humanoid is covered in a mangy gray hide that only partly covers its gaunt but muscled frame stares at the paladin. "Hunclay kept me here unfairly. Are you his minions?"
He gives you all a sidelong glance. Awaiting knowledge checks before describing further.

To identify the creature that climbs out of the pit Knowledge Planes: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
I have knowledge arcana but it is only a + 8.

Planes 1: CTHEPALTANGOULGI looks like it's a name. You know that knowing the name of a thing can sometimes grant power over the thing. If you're going to try to leverage this name, you must "pronounce" it correctly! Since we're in a play-by-post, you'll have to do your best phonetic rendition. ONLY if you plan to try using the name.
Planes 2: The thing standing before you is a schir demon.

"Hmmm...well then, are you ke-tap-all-tan-guul-gee?"
I'm assuming the C in "CTEP" is pronounced the same way as the C in "Cthulu". The rest look relatively straightforward pronunciation-wise.

![]() |

"A fair enough guess," Wayreth shrugs as he waves dismissively at the demon's observation. It didn't look like the demon was going anywhere, so he figured he had time to keep trying. And it seemed from the demon's reaction that he had at least guessed the first syllable right.
"But I'm more interested in your name. Hmmm...how about ke-thep-all-tan-guul-gee. Ke-thep-all-tan-gool-gee? Ke-thep-all-tan-gool-ghee? Ke-thep-all-tan-gool-ghi? Ke-thep-all-tan-guul-ghi?"
Anyone trained in linguistics?

![]() |

Wayreth watches the demon carefully to see his reactions to the random pronunciation attempts, taking particular note of which attempted syllables worry the demon most.
sense motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

![]() |

Wow...nicely played, Wayreth. Not only did you try a whole lot of possibilities, I think you might have a good sense of which worked!
Ethendril holds his blade in front of him cautiously as the demon circles the group.
"Climb back in the dark hole you came from, demon," Ethendril warns. "Iomedae's light bars you from passing."

FiddlersGreen |

Wow...nicely played, Wayreth. Not only did you try a whole lot of possibilities, I think you might have a good sense of which worked!
It's like taking 20. If you have time and there's no penalty for failure, keep trying till you succeed. XD

Agnes is not trained in Linguistics, but maybe try ke-ta-pallt-an-ghoul-gee and other bits that separate that way, cause when I say "Cthulu" I say ke-tu-lu not ke-thu-lu?

Yeah why not. I was thinking that it was the last 2 syllables I was messing up, but a more dynamically different attempt would give us more shots at working out the right syllables.
"Or perhaps Ke-ta-pallt-an-ghoul-gee? Catapult-and-ghoul-gee?"
Hoping my sense motive roll applies to these attempts too. XD

(Only Harlis and Wayreth made Sense Motive checks. So, they're the only ones who get to act in the surprise round.)

Surprise Round
Schir, Powerful Charge: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 2 = 12, Damage: 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2, 3) + 4 = 10
Wayreth continues to taunt the demon who responds with a partial charge using its Powerful Charge ability. The sylph takes 10 HP of damage for his trouble.
Wayreth and Harlis may now act in the surprise round.

![]() |

"For Iomedae, dispatch the fiend!" Harlis cries as he steps back towards the party.
. Since Harlis is near the back he can hopefully 5' step up behind Wayreth and cast Weapons Against Evil on Hotspurs gun and Wayreth's blade (which will glow 5' as well as penetrate DR)

![]() |

Was I flat-footed against the demon? Not sure why I'd be letting my guard down against a demon right in front of me... Also can't see us on the map. Is there anyone I can move to a flanking position with?
Btw, Harlis, I am Monk/Rogue. I AM the blade. ;)

![]() |

Yeah, I wasn't sure on what weapon you were using now Wayreth, also get uncanny dodge online, you need it. Note that my init is after Wayreth's this round. I'm buffing so hopefully next round people can take advantage of it. I'm assuming Ethendril will smite and thus not need my help that way.

![]() |

Plan is that at level 4 I get dex to damage instead of STR. Uncanny dodge will come after that.
Are we using a combat map? If not, is there someone I can move to flank the demon with?

![]() |

Actually, just remembered why I've not been doing any kicking despite having a level in monk. STR 7, waiting for my third level of rogue before doing melee.
Wayreth holds his crossbow out to receive Harlis' blessing, takes a quick step back and fires at the schir.

Wayreth's bolt strikes true! Unfortunately, the demon's nature prevents it from suffering the full damage.
Round 1
Hotspur is up!
Posting the demon's action, since it goes immediately after Hotspur.
Non-Action: The demon takes a 5-foot-step towards Wayreth.
Standard Action: The schir set's his torso and attacks with his gore.
Gore+Power Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 2 = 18, Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 4 = 14
Wayreth curmples to the ground as the outsider's horns dig deep into his flesh.
With the 10 HP of damage from before, Wayreth has suffered a total of 24 HP of damage. He is at -8 HP and will perish in 3 rounds if he does not receive some healing!

![]() |

If he indicated to Harlis that the crossbow was his preferred weapon still, that would've been enchanted with Weapons Against Evil. Assuming he delayed until Harlis had time to use it. Low init is me.
Harlis gasps as Wayreth collapses from the dire attack of the demon and he readies to pull the wand when he gets a chance.

Botting Hotspur since there hasn't been a post since Tuesday.
Musket: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12, Damage: 1d12 ⇒ 11
The gunslinger fires her musket at the demon and does a bit of damage.
The demon went. Wayreth falls unconscious.
Wayreth is up. Makes a check not to bleed out:
1d20 ⇒ 12
Wayreth continues bleeding and it at -9 HP.
Agnes, Ethendril, and Harlis are up!

Agnes tries saying, ke-te-pal-tan-ghoul-gee, ke-the-pal-tan-ghoul-gee. and if neither of those work, she'll try to overcome the spell resist 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 and if it works she'll cast magic missile for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 points of damage.

Sorry for the delay, real life monsters are causing trouble again!
