"Of course, I would be delighted to help!"

He then heads down into the cellar.

In the cellar...

Barrels of wine flank the walls of this long stone cellar. On the eastern end of the basement, various meats hang from chains and hooks attached to the ceiling.

Two more lemures wallow here, hungrily devouring the hanging meats.

However, when the light of Basil's Ioun Torch disturbs them, they roil around to face him, hungry for fresh meat!

Initiative:

Basil knocks a pair of silver arrows, and lets loose!

The lemure, incensed, rushes forward to claw at Vegazi...

...but almost trips over the spreading pool of filth oozing from its fallen compatriot.

Tossing a grin in Vegazi's direction, Basil does his best to finish-off the injured lemure.

Basil finishes off the injured devil, leaving naught but two spreading pools of steaming filth.

Searching the room, he finds the hidden stash, as promised.

Two Water Purification Sponges, MW Heavy Crossbow (with 20 bolts), +1 buckler, Scroll of Daze Monster, two Oils of Align Weapon(Good).

Basil crates-up the loot, then heads upstairs, to see how the rest of the town is faring.

Once Basil and Vegazi are out of the tavern, the extent of the chaos in Arwyll Stead becomes much clearer: townsfolk run through the streets, flocks of gaavs assail buildings and innocents, and lemures pour down the cobblestone avenues in a scene of almost total anarchy.

Mayor Proum, surrounded by a knot of guards, approaches Basil shortly thereafter.

"Great - I was hoping you would be about. The leader of the raid, some kind of devilish orc, was seen hurrying into the catacombs. We can hold the line here, but I don't have the manpower to send someone into the crypts. Please, I beg of you, sort this out for us!"

"Sounds good to me!"

Stopping only to heal himself...

Basil hurries over to the catacombs, stopping at the entrance to recast his short-term buffs.

Specifically, Shield and Gravity Bow, but this time also adding Bless and See Invisibility (from the scroll) into the mix. He also hides away his Ioun Torch, and activates his 'Evil Outsider' Adaptation, for 60' Darkvision for the next half hour.

Heading to the catacombs...

A pile of boulders, broken rock, and rubble blocks the main passageway through the catacombs where the ceiling collapsed. On either side of the hallway, five-foot-wide passages lead into other areas.

With a shrug, Basil heads through the western door.

Skull-sized cavities dot the finely carved walls of these chambers in an orderly fashion. The cubbies contain funerary urns of varying quality and size.

Wandering aimlessly around the chamber are three more lemures, sporadically smashing urns, and oozing into the niches subsequently revealed.

When basil and Vegazi enter, however, they eagerly turn to face the new threat!

Wrinkling his nose in distaste, Basil tries to pop some more devilish boils.

Vegazi then takes a pot-shot at it...

...but continues to prove to be wildly inaccurate.

The injured lemure quivers, rolls forward to strike...

...and then collapses to the ground.

The other two then take its place, each choosing a different target...

...but the best that they are able to manage, is to lightly scratch Basil's left arm.

Basil steps back, and fires at the one that scratched him.

Basil causes one of the lemures to explode in a shower of putrescence.

Vagazi then does her best to emulate his attacks...

...actually managing to (barely) land a hit.

The remaining lemure then focuses all of its attention on Vegazi...

...but its weak claws barely cause any damage.

"Come on, Vegazi - we can do this!"

Basil then attempts to finish-off the last lemure.

Basil delivers a nasty blow to the final lemure, which quivers for a moment, then collapses to the ground, quickly disintegrating into a spreading pool of filth.

A search of the four inter-linked chambers the form this wing of the catacombs reveals a lot of cremains, and some scattered assorted grave goods, but nothing else of interest.

I am not stealing grave goods.

With a shrug, Basil heads for the other arm of the catacombs.

Sarcophagi line the walls and occupy the corners of these chambers. The sarcophagi each bear inscriptions and minute cosmetic differences indicative of the individual enshrined.

Exploring this chamber is a child-like blasphemy, conjoining the features of a plump human infant and a gigantic, gore-fattened fly.

Upon spotting Basil and Vegazi, it giggles in delight, and prepares to fight!

Initiative:
Basil: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15.
Vegazi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7.
Z: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25.

It zooms forward, and attempts to bite Basil...

...but its teeth are turned aside by his Mage Armor.

"Stop that!"

Basil steps back, and fires two arrows at the little terror from point blank range.

Vegazi likewise shoots at it...

..scoring a solid blow.

Shrieking in surprise, the creature floats backward, concentrates, and disappears.

Combat over.

Searching the room reveals mostly intact sarcophagi, as well as a small panel on one wall, on which is an inscription (in Common), which reads: Open in case of undead.

"Oh well. I wonder where these things keep going?"

With a shrug, Basil moves through the archway to the next area.

A long row of stone sarcophagi lines this hallway. Three passageways to the north lead to other rooms.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23.

Vegazi nudges Basil.

"Look, Basil-like-the-herb, that stone box is slightly open..."

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27.

"Huh. So it is. You open it, and I'll cover you."

With a nod, Vegazi moves over and heaves the lid off the sarcophagus.

Inside is a middle-aged man, dressed in the livery of a town guardsman, who is squeezing his eyes shut, cowering, and feebly waving his glaive in front of him.

"B-back, back I say!"

Great. Just what we needed. A morale case. Still, some cannon-fodder could be useful.

"Pull yourself together, man! Do we sound like intruders? We were asked to come down here by the mayor, to clear out the infestation. What in the Nine Hells are *you* doing down here!?"

The man has the grace to look a bit sheepish.

"Well, when the main gate was breached, I ran, thinking the other guards were right behind me... b-but then I realised that I was the only one running, so I went to hide in here... then the other things started coming in, so I hid in one of the tombs. I-I don't want to die!"

Basil sighs.

"Fine. Just get out of here. The route to the entrance is clear."

Without another glance at the man, Basil strides forward to the next chamber.

"You don't need to tell me twice!"

So saying, the man flees for the entrance.

Moving on to the next room...

Five plain stone sarcophagi lie along the walls of this rectangular burial chamber.

In addition, two more lemures lurch around the room, futilely scrabbling at the heavy sarcophagi lids.

Initiative:
Basil: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21.
Vegazi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13.
Z: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16.

Without another word, Basil attempts to skewer the lemures.

It turns, and rolls towards him...

The other one likewise rolls forward...

...but is unable to land a blow.

Vegazi then does her best...

...before moving on to the next chamber.

Ornate stone sarcophagi line the floors of this wide chamber. In the center of the crypt, four sarcophagi surround a large iron brazier. Passages lead from the western side of the chamber, and a collapsed tunnel to the south appears to be unfinished.

Frantically searching the room is a fiendish-looking orc-like woman, dressed in a spiked breastplate, and carrying a double-axe. At her side is a huge dog, its breath surrounded by a corona of flames, as well as the injured Gaav and Zebub that the party encountered earlier.

The woman turns in surprise as Basil and Vegazi enter, her eyes widening in shock when she sees Vegazi.

"There you are half-breed! You will come with me! Mother wants you back..."

Initiative:
Basil: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8.
Vegazi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18.
G: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14.

The Zebub then buzzes forward and tries to bite Basil...

...closely followed by the Gaav.

The Zebub lands a punishing blow...

...but the Gaav, apparently, could not hit the broad side of a barn.

Vegazi then tries to finish-off the Zebub...

Grimacing, Basil tries to take-out one of the foes that *haven't* had a chance to act, yet, shooting at the flaming hound.

With a snarl, the woman charges Basil, her axe held high...

...but in her eagerness, she fails to notice the nearly translucent shield of force protecting Basil, and her blow is turned aside at the last moment.

The Zebub then tries to bite Basil...

...giving him a nasty wound.

This is followed closely by the Gaav unleashing hell...

Basil withdraws into the mouth of the corridor.

Following Basil's retreat, Vegazi steps back to block the entrance, and fires a shot at the Gaav...

Deciding to deal with one threat at a time, Basil tries to finish-off the Gaav.
