As it says in the title I would like to run a shadowrun 4e game. I will be recruiting 4 to 6 players using the standard 400 BP. I do not have a closing date as of yet because I don't know how much interest will be in this game. I am looking for solid concepts for characters.

Please show me your creativity.

I've still got an alias from a cancelled Shadowrun game from a few months ago and I would be interested in putting him to use.

He's a fanboy street samurai- his whole identity has been engineered toward this image of being a badass samurai guy when in fact most of what he's learned of the lifestyle was from movies. He's also an adrenaline junky with a mild BTL dependency- his low essence score has left his senses diminished, so he needs riskier thrills to feel excited.

I'm really new to Shadowrun, so I will probably need coaching if this gets off the ground.

My other Shadowrun games seem to have both died, so I'd be interested. What kind of game will it be?

Lantern Lodge

I am intending it to be a very dark, gritty game. I don't want to give to much away because then I get people wanting to play for the side I am not intending. It will be rather combat lite, a lot of RP.

Please I am much better at answering specific questions than giving generalized ideas. So ask.

Lantern Lodge

I guess I could say more detective work than anything else.

Where are you planning on having the game set? Seattle? Denver? Elsewhere? :)

Lantern Lodge

I was thinking about setting it Washington, D.C. for now or maybe portland.

Dark Archive

Are you planning for 2072 or 2050?

Are you planning on using any special tools to run the game (i.e. Maptools, etc.)?

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2013 Top 16

So are we going to be standard runners? Or low-life criminals? Or soldiers? Or government spies? A rock band? Something else?

Lantern Lodge

2072

I might try using maptools

And I was planning on standard runners but other ideas that would work in a group woul be welcome.

My time is a bit limited, so only a PbP would work for me...

I'm open for any premise, although I've always wondered what a setting for SR based on Leverage (TV show) would be like :)

Lantern Lodge

It would be a pbp

Sorry I am unfamiliar with that show

Lantern Lodge

Let's say I am open to whatever ou guys wish to play. This is going to be an antagonist driven plot and could fit well with any type of characters. I will wait and see what you create.

Lantern Lodge

The books I do have and will consider legal for play are

Core
Runners Companion
Arsenal
Augmentation
Unwired
Street Magic
Way of the adept

That's it for now. I will get more PDFs later but feel free to use anything in there for character creation. Some of the weirder stuff will need approval but I am pretty easy going as long as it applies to roleplaying.

My possible cities will include DC, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Vegas, London, Dubai, Tokyo, Miami, Sydney, Los Angeles, Moscow.

Type of story depends on you. I am willing to accept a mix. I am fine with interparty conflict as long as everyone is okay with it and there are no hard feelings. That being said if someone is a Runner, someone can be a Hacker, a criminal, and a government agent. It's totally up to you how the story goes down and once I get a group we can work out the details.

Concept I'm thinking about is a character who comes from a wealthy corp family and went to the best schools. He's taken to the shadows to find his sister who ran away. I see her as working in a strip club because she figures that would be the last place anyone would look for her.

I'm thinking a human Tech specialist, but have a crazy idea about a Troll Infiltrator/Adept type.

Lantern Lodge

Personally I like the human tech specialist with the concept you posted.

That's novel, I've been a Gm for Shadowrun many times, but never had a chance to play it. I'll see if I can think of a good concept to post.

That's good with me :)

I'll start working on the background details.....

Man, I do not have this book but Shadowrun was the first RPG I ever read, back when I was about 10. I never actually got to play it, but I LOVED the setting and the flavor and adored the novels. Robert Charrette's original trilogy was a dogeared favorite in my early library.

I had a shadowrun game recently die off, featuring a character in one of Tokyo's underground combat biker leagues. He was built on 300BP but I can tweak him to fit the new campaign and upgrade to 400 BP, if you're happy with the concept.

It's all in the character profile... let me know what you think!

Lantern Lodge

James Martin-if you would still like to play, I am sure we can work everything out. Though it would take a lot of emailing. I know there is a wiki out there for it. I am unsure of any other materials and there is no SRD for it.

Neko-that is fine. Like i said we can work with virtually any concept.

Cool. Count me in.

I'd lean toward Tokyo, Seattle, or Las Vegas for settings, but anything could work.

If you still have some spots open,I will see what I can whip up. What roles have been filled or what could be of use?

Also James and anyone else that needs a hand, I've got a copy of the Shadowrun data for Herolab if you want to be sure your points are spent right. I'd be glad to plug your characters in and see how they are :)

Lantern Lodge

Alright this seems more popular than I thought it would be. I will leave recruitment open until Monday, April 16th @ midnight EST. This gives you guys the weekend to come up with ideas.

As far as roles go it looks like we have a
Hacker/Tech Specialist
Wheelman/Mystic Adept
Close Combat Specialist

This is the character I've had- I do believe we were in the same pbp, Arknight. I mostly pulled him from the sample characters in the 20th anniversary edition.

I also have fond memories of running a 2e campaign when i was about 15... There was an adventure with heaps of evil bugs... Double exposure maybe? If i can get a pc together in time and there's spots left i'd love to be in :)

Lantern Lodge

also, I am flexible if you guys prefer to do the priority system we can do that.

Heh. Bugs.
Maybe Chicago would be an interesting city to base things in too...

I'm perfectly happy with the point buy system. For me, this is a 100 point upgrade so I'll be having all sorts of fun with my character sheet.

Sounds like a "Face" could be helpful. I will throw a dwarf face together. Probably a bit of a blackmailer/inquisitor. If you have seen "Inglorious Basterds" then a dwarf version of Christoph Waltz's character.

Neko is somewhat Charisma oriented, I was spread a little thin at 300 points so I could get as much as I would have liked. I was planning on bumping the Influence group up a bit, but if you'd rather handle that role I'm perfectly fine with it.

I'm happy with the point buy as well. And yep Kik, we were. :) looking forward to this one lasting.... lol

Hmmmm, I will look at your build and fill in a slot that is really needed. You already had a character together and I am not going to step on your build like that.

DaWay: Thanks! I actually decided to buy the PDF. Darn, that is a good looking book! It might take a bit to put together the stats, but I'm leaning toward a troll bear shaman, a sort of ghetto angel who ministers to the poor and forgotten, healing them and protecting them against those who would take advantage of them. Perhaps he's trying to raise money to open a real medical center, which would give him the reason to become a 'runner.

Arknight:Thanks for the offer! Once I get everything sorted, I might need you to do that. Math is hard...

@James Martin: Take a look at Neko's character sheet under the 'Character Background & Notes' section, I think he has a fair bit in common with the character you're proposing- although he's more the sword than the shield. If you decide to go with that concept we can probably work out a preexisting relationship...

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32

@Neko: Sure! I think you're probably a bit more flash than the dude I'm thinking about. But if you've got a connection to the streets, then the bear shaman would know you.

Lantern Lodge

You know everytime I look at the trolls from shadowrun. I can't help but think of the quanari from Dragon Age

Ah, someone else submitted a Mystic adept? Well, I guess I might as well bow out then.
Less competition that way, have fun you guys.

Mystic adept gives plenty of room for exploring different concepts, there's no reason we need to limit ourselves to only one person on the team with the trait. Please don't leave just because I can cast a few spells...

If you're just not comfortable with two mystic adepts, I could go with a different concept. I have many, many more ideas for Shadowrun characters than I do opportunites to play them.

Okay, I mostly just copied the Street Shaman from the 20th Anniversary book, but I changed a couple of things. Spoilered for convenience:

Rocky the Street Shaman:

Name: Rochester Corraldo
Alias: Rocky
Race: Troll (40 bp)
Sex: Male
Nationality: Caucasian (UCAS)
Lifestyle: Squatter
Karma Spent: 0

Physical Description: Slight for a troll, Rocky is bald, with horns and prominent lower tusks. He walks somewhat hunched over, and tends to talk in a low voice, rumbling more than talking. He has a visible scar on his right cheek and often scowls. He wears a necklace made of bear claws and has a claw piercing his nose.

Personality/background Rocky was born to the slums. He's lived there his entire life, save for a brief stint in jail for assault. It was in there, locked in solitary that Bear came to him. Bear spoke to him of beginnings and responsibilities. He spoke of the duty to take care of those who were less fortunate than himself and taught him to speak to the spirits. When Rocky left jail, he was changed. He became a pillar of the community, taking care of those who could not take care of themselves and healing what wounds he could. He takes odd jobs, usually as muscle or as a healer for runners in trouble. Recently he's begun to dream of opening a real clinic in the slums, a place for those without means to get help. He's made contact with a street doc with connections and has started to assemble a nest egg. Still, he's got a long way to go...

Advantages: +2 dice for Health spells, +2 dice for resisting Physical damage.
Disadvantages: Bear magicians can go berserk when wounded (taking Physical damage) in combat or if someone under their care is badly injured. Make a Willpower + Charisma Test (wound modifers apply). The character goes berserk for 3 turns, minus 1 turn per hit; 3 or more hits avert the berserk rage entirely. A berserk magician will go a er the attacker(s) without regard for her own safety. If the magician incapacitates a target before the time is up,the berserk fury dissipates.

Ok, here's some of the background on my concept, Steel Cowboy. All thoughts and comments are welcome. (One note is that Seattle will be replaced with whatever city we wind up in. :) )

Steel Cowboy (Background):
Kirval Masamune Chekov was the son of a corporate bigwig and his Japanese wife (formerly bodyguard) from the East Coast. He grew up in luxury, but was mostly bored, so he studied everything he could get his hand on. Although his mother taught him much about self-defense and his father tried to teach him about dealing with people, his passions started to drift into electronics and mechanics, stuff he could put his hands on and make do what he wanted. His interests also drifted to history where he gained a fascination for the American old west. His younger sister had a bit of a wild streak, so he was always trying to keep her out of trouble and keep her under their father's radar due to his temper. 'KC' attended the best engineering college and graduated with a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Engineering in just 2 years.

During his first year of graduate school, he got word that his sister had run away and gone missing. Dropping everything, he went home. It appeared his father could care less, but his mother gave him some advice on where to start looking. For months, he followed every clue he could find and along the way realized he had a talent for puzzles, whether mysteries or computerized code, and developed a couple of contacts on both sides of the law as he provided technical assistance to various individuals. His passions led him to take on a new persona, Steel Cowboy, in order to completely separate himself from his family's influence. His investigations and research had led him to Seattle. He was in the city less than a week before fate smiled on him and he encountered an old friend who had seen his sister in the last place his parents would look: a strip club.

Based on the roles already taken, I'm looking at a master of disguise/illusion mage of some kind, perhaps with a focus on B&E. I'll see if I can flesh it out tonight.

Lantern Lodge

boggbear: I actually prefer parties where characters can fill multiple roles rather than be shoehorned into a role. So having more than one mystic adept is more than okay with me. I actually prefer it. I am actually all about options. I would love to see a couple. Maybe even some stranger characters like a free spirit or a pixie. Or someone play a technomancer.

I would like to throw my card in for this team of enterprising metahumans. While I have only been in the city a short while, I am well known for being "in the know" and putting the right people together. I can't promise anything in a firefight, but I will earn my keep and maybe be able to negotiate a little extra Nuyen for when the run is complete and we are sitting around the table enjoying ourselves a few well earned Guinesses and cigars.

{I will have my stats and crunch uploaded to my profile later tonight.}

Well, true enough, but isn't there already a pretty high amount of awakened characters put forward?

I do have a concept.
A good catholic Irish boy, the kind with a father who is even more stern and pious than the official line of the church.
Poor sap finds himself in possession of "supernatural powers" and decried as a devil spawn by his father.

Forced to leave house and home, he does what so many of his forefathers did, by travelling to the new world.
Having lived in isolation he knows little about the world and tries to gain entry into Tir Tangier, thinking it sounds like a land from Irish myth.

Brutally rejected due to him being less than elfin he finds himself with no contacts or prospects.
But the shadows always needs awakened meat and so he runs in the shadows to survive, bitter and rejected.

Are we doing any common houserules, like CHAx2 free points of contacts? Also, is it alright if I create my own magical tradition? I want something that uses Intuition, but I don't like any of the ones in Street Magic.

OK, here's what I've come up with for an illusion mage/B&E expert named "Gh0st":

Background:

Gh0st grew up in a run-down orphanage on the outskirts of Seattle, where he had to learn how to fend for himself, and do it without getting caught. His older "brother" frequently sent him out to steal food to supplement their meager provided meals, and Gh0st realized he had Awakened talent, which he used to disguise himself and sneak into where he didn't belong.

But once his "brother" turned 18, he left and broke contact with Gh0st, who was unable to ever track him down. Though he didn't like being alone, he found he could operate better without anyone tying him down. After getting out of the orphanage, he started living off the streets, either stealing what he needed from people's homes, or conning it out of them using disguises and guile.

As a dwarf, he was never much to look at, but found that some well-used illusion spells went a long way, and he soon developed a taste for fast women. That was good for company, but a few close brushes with the law convinced him that he needed a team if he was going to go anywhere in the world.

I've actually only ever played as a character and we did table top by the book.

I am fine with cha x2 in free contact points

Does anyone else have houserules theyve used before that I can review.

How do you feel about buying successes as the equivalent of taking 10? The most common rule I've seen is to allow trading dice for successes at a 4:1 ratio under the same circumstances that would allow you to take a 10 in d20.
