Yeah, just remembered I forgot to post the Drosil thing.

Drosil, despite his best efforts found nothing of interest in the hazardous building. There were plenty of rat droppings, rotting papers, and moldy rugs, but that's about it.

Half-Elf Spirit Ranger 8 (HP 33/68; F+8, R+8, W+4 (+1 vs. Arcane); AC 25/12/23; Perception +18, Sense Motive +2, Initiative +2)

"Abjuration and Necromancy. And the name of the Warden....Something to protect him? Or protect from him." Janos muses for a moment, but then shrugs.

He looks through the window and says, "Well B'yelka, I think we've found a stage for you. Though I don't know what kind of audience you'll get in here. Shall we enter?" He grips his axe and moves to the doors.

retired (arc completed)

"Hawkran you say? Would it be worth the risk to hazard using the spirit board and planchette here? Perhaps the warden might respond and any lingering abjurations may provide additional protection."

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Diva) 8 | HP 51 | AC 19 FF 17 T13 | Saves +3/+8/+6 | Init + 8 | Percep +11

"Wait Janos. Dantrian may have a good idea." Besides, I really don't want to go inside this place...

Male Human Paladin 8 | HP 36/53 (68)| AC 18 FF 15 T13 | Saves +11/+10/+10 | Init + 4 | Percep + 2 | Dip +14 | SM +10 | KR +6 | Heal +3 | HA +7 | HePo =0

Hmmm... If the wards are on the outside I would guess that they were meant to seal something in. Just because Hawkrun is dead so what would there be to protect aginat now?

Somehow I feel that using the planchette will be more potent inside. But also more dangerous. I think its worth a try.

Janos, your eyes are sharper than mine, shall we head over to the north east corner? The wall has collapsed there, perhaps we can see inside and get a small idea of the layout.

Drosil are you still injured? Do you need extra healing?

Half-Elf Spirit Ranger 8 (HP 33/68; F+8, R+8, W+4 (+1 vs. Arcane); AC 25/12/23; Perception +18, Sense Motive +2, Initiative +2)

"I think we need to be very careful how we use that here. If this is the center of the restless spirits, who knows what could happen with the planchette?"

Janos nods at Anton's suggestion. "Prudent to scout things out before we dive in. Maybe we'll even find a way in over there."

So around the building past R9?

The group circles around the building, checking it out.

A casual observation of the western wall tower from afar reveals a dozen or so filthy rats watching from nooks and crannies in the stones; their fur is matted and filthy, their eyes dark and hungry.

R6

A large, rectangular block of stone rests on this weather-beaten stone balcony, while ruined wooden benches line the eastern wall under a row of tiny, barred windows above. A stout wooden door sits in the wall near the northern end of the balcony.

R9

This open pit appears to have once been a receptacle for the prison’s waste. Even now, with the right wind, the pit still emits a foul stench.

Near the waste pit on the back side of the building is a partially open door, looking in reveals several moldy cots laying strewn around the room, while doors to smaller, more private sleeping cells hang askew to the west. Judging from the rest of this room’s decor, this must have once been the prison’s infirmary.

Male Human Witch 7 | HP 44 | AC 14 (18 w/ Mage Armor) FF 12 T 14 | Saves F+3/R+5/W+4 | Init + 5 | Percep +7

Tibideau scrunches his nose as the group nears the waste pit. He eyes the infirmary door. "I suppose this would be as good a place as any to enter. But we should explore all the possible entrances, just in case we need to make a quick escape later."

Just reposting the link to the map.

Half-Elf Spirit Ranger 8 (HP 33/68; F+8, R+8, W+4 (+1 vs. Arcane); AC 25/12/23; Perception +18, Sense Motive +2, Initiative +2)

"Let's check out those smaller rooms. Then we can decide if we want to continue from this direction into the main part of the building."

Male Fetchling (World Walker) Swashbuckler (Inspired Blade) 8 [ HP 65/76 | AC 29/18T/22FF | Fort +6, Ref +13, Will +3 | Init +7 (+2 with panache) | Perception +10 | Panache: 4/4 ]

Sorry for being out of touch - I thought I was going to have internet access on a quick trip, but didn't. I'm back home now, though, and will resume regular posting. BTW - sucks about not finding anything, and yeah, I'm still down some HP (though let's not go crazy with the healing just yet).

"Right - no sense using the front door when a back door exists."

I totally lied on accident by misreading the map. There is no back door, just a window. However part of the back wall is collapsed which would allow entry. The only doors are in the front.

Here's a map of everything you can see by looking through the windows. The infirmary is area S14, the auditorium is S15.

Interior Map

S19

A huge stone furnace dominates this room, large enough for a child to climb inside. An ancient fire has burned away the entire east wall the room, providing a panoramic, if eerie, view of the lake beyond (From which you are looking in). That same lake has gradually expanded into the room, flooding its eastern half.

The white lines are doors. The places where it looks like gaps in the wall are barred narrow windows. You can either enter through the broken wall at S19, the front door at S1, or try the door on the west-end balcony into the second floor (visible on the first map as R6).

retired (arc completed)

"Ah, that must be where the blaze began. Shall we enter here then or do any of you think it would be wiser to approach from the balcony?"

Half-Elf Spirit Ranger 8 (HP 33/68; F+8, R+8, W+4 (+1 vs. Arcane); AC 25/12/23; Perception +18, Sense Motive +2, Initiative +2)

"Let's go in here. At least we can see into some of the adjacent rooms." Unless he hears objections, Janos moves up to climb over the rubble of the broken wall.

The group scrambles over the broken wall and into the prison. As they get closer, they can see a soot-caked copper plaque over the furnace entrance reads “Ember Maw.”

Dantrian, Janos and Drosil can take a single standard action

Knowledge (Religion) DC 18:
You have heard about in your studies and travels particularly dangerous, lingering spirits forming together to infuse an object with “life”. This furnace appears much like that. In such cases, the objects appear to possess almost magical abilities that act like any number of magical spells. These usually are tied to the normal abilities of the object, such as, in this case, burning and scorching things. They are known as haunts.

Knowledge (Local) DC 18:
You overheard talk in town of a legend. Perhaps it was at the tavern or perhaps it was in one of the historical records you have searched through in town. Regardless, you recall mention that the prison executed a prisoner once - a man named Benjen Ereska by tossing him into the furnace where he was cremated . . . alive. With haunts of this nature, in other studies, you have found that they often are put to rest by finding the remains of the victim.

Drosil sits to one side, thinking. "So let me get this straight. Because this prisoner was burned alive in the furnace, he is causing the furnace to try to burn anyone else that comes near? B'yelka wracks her brain trying to remember the details of the so-called 'Haunt Siphon.' She holds one up to Dantrian and asks her old teacher, "To make this thing work, all I have to do is twist the top as these haunts manifest, correct?"

To Anton she says, "Will you be the one to commune with the angry spirits of this place? If you do ask simply 'Where are your remains'"

I think Anton has the best will save at +6, so he would be my vote... Besides, I can ready an action and trip him (from a distance) if he gets that old eyes-rolled-up look ;) Jelani's brief on the Planchette calls for a DC11 Will, but at a -2 (I assume the spirits here are *somewhat* hostile :p)
