Variel, why are you jumping in the water? Are you going to investigate the part of the bay where the bubbling occurred? I'm only asking because we all took to a longboat to shore and we're on the beach now, ready to explore.

Co-GM: Horatio's ready to move in, too (though he'd cast "Cat's Grace" on himself first); but before I do anything, I was wondering if we could get a read on those Perception Checks regarding the the megala... I mean, the completely innocent bubbling in the water?

Also, given the earlier Knowledge: Nature check, would we also have a break down on the type of creature in the water (a megaladon counts as a dinosaur, right?) Finally, given that we're on the beach, with ruined docks/fort to our west, the water to our east, the ship roughly 100 feet east of the beach, and both our ship and a strange anomaly in the water, any chance we could get a battle map?

Regarding Perception checks made to see the cause of the bubbling from under the water.

A few of the officers attempted to see the cause of the bubbling/roiling waters several hundred feet from the shore and also in the water by the ship. Unfortunately, nothing out of the ordinary can be spotted beneath the waves/water currently, and, whatever may have caused the disturbance moments before (if there even was such a creature) seems to be gone now.

Flynn's Know. Nature roll:

Since Flynn could not see anything, then trying to determine/identify what particular creature (or even if there is one) under the water is difficult at this time. Perhaps, if he can spot something...he may learn/know more in due course. Flynn does know there are a number of low-lying shoals and barrier reefs just offshore from his earlier perception check. Any manner of sea creatures could live in these waters. These waters haven't been navigated nor the island's inhabitants (land, air and sea) catalogued in a very long time.

And, respectfully, can you please stop speculating (via ooc and alike) that it is a prehistoric sea monster, for eg Megalodon or Plesiosaur, as it can confuse players who may think Flynn knows something in game that they do not (which isn't the case, here, at present). Thanks.

Horatio sees Rain’s look at Jiro and Variel, and then looks at the others and back at Rain.

For now, he will elect not to use Cat’ Grace.

”Well, as for exploring the fort – I tried to explore the docks the ol’ fashioned way,” he says patting the coil of rope at his waist which he attempted to use to find the depths of the water by the docks ”including all my experience with Engineering and the rest – but, sadly, I got no information.”

’At that point Dhaavan summoned an Elemental to help me do it – then it went to explore and, next thing we know, he loses contact with his Elemental and there was this big gush of unnatural bubbling and foaming, which doesn’t seem very coincidental to me… I’m guessing something’s out there, but I got no idea what it could be, except that I’ve tried to hail our ship twice and I keep getting no response.”

”You know I want to explore stuff here, and I’m also eager to explore the fort, but we got folk who already used spells to explore the water,” he says with a shrug.

On the one hand, he doesn’t want folk to waste their powers for something that could be important later – on the other hand, he reflects that he knows almost nothing about Rajah’s magical abilities. In point of fact, he didn’t even know Rajah could aid them with breathing underwater, or how many times the man could do it again in a day.

Then he looks at Amen-set –

”Send your bird to the spot where the bubbling happened. Keep it about fifty feet above the water in case there’s any threat there that might jump up and try to bite it, or whatever might be there… meantime, have it see what it can see there, if there’s any threat or trouble brewing below.”

Amen-set nods to Horatio and obeys.

Amen-set will send Horus to the spot where the bubbling happened, and use Perception 50 feet above the water, and will look for anything which may have caused the bubbling to occur.

Horus’s Perception Check 50 feet above where bubbling happened

Horatio turns back to Rain.

”I got no problem with exploring that fort – but if something tries to harm our ship, then protecting her – and our mates that’re on it – to me, that’s what has to come first,” he adds.

Then he tries to be more optimistic.

”Meantime, if Horus sees nothing, then I guess no worries. We can double the deck watch – just in case – then we can explore the fort.”

”And as Rajah’s spell will last us a little over two hours, then even if we spend an hour and a half inside that fort we’d still have at least a good thirty to forty minutes to deal with any threat in the water without wasting the spell,” he says to her.

I understand completely what y are saying Rain but I am concerned about what may be out there. Like Horatio says, we have th ship and the crew to worry about. Added to that is the fact that we don't know what we will find in the fort. I do not want something dangerous between us and the ship if we need to retreat. Also we have already invested some spells to exploring the bay.

Placing a hand on Rain's shoulder he hopes to convince her of his opinion. If we do not find anything in the first 30 minutes then we can move back on to the fort without anything wasted but a water breathing spell and some time.

Dhaavan Groans, and calls another water elemental and orders it to return imediately if it detects any creature or natural phenomenon that could have caused the bubbles

Flynn's Knowledge check of ruined dock:

The existing dock near the fort has mostly fallen into the bay - so the wooden planks (that form the walkway) are all gone and only a few support piers remain in place (its current state: dilapidated and useless). So, the party cannot use the dock in its present condition (it will need to be rebuilt). As to the length of the original dock, you cannot say for certain because not all the piers remain in place, but it could have been used to dock rowboats/longboats/barges and not large sailing vessels once upon a time. The party can reconstruct it to whatever length they deem suitable. You were given the information that the ship could come within 100ft of the island/sheltered bay before chances of it running aground (so this is a good gauge for the dock length). This is due to the numerous low-lying shoals and barrier reefs offshore. Water around these low-lying shoals can be as shallow as 5 to 6 feet, and, over the reefs at low tide, as shallow as 3 feet. Remember, this is a sheltered bay and probably one of the best places to moor a ship. That is all the information I can give you. I hope that helps.

Re Horus' Perception, from his current vantage 50ft above the place where the bubbling occurred, can see nothing at all. Only still water. If there was something, it is now gone.

As Dhaavan calls forth another summoned creqture Variel casts enlarge person on himself to grant him some extra reach in the water. We don't know what this is below the water. If it is an animal or dinosaur like Flynn thinks then stick together to help each other as we can. If it is a caster then we will need to spread out to prevent it from targeting us all at once. Rajah you stay in the back if that is good for you as we may need your healing powers.

Rain looked at Variel for a moment before slowly replying, "Alright. Thirty minutes."

Her turquoise eyes glistened under the sun as she turned her eyes to the now calm water in the bay and wondered what lay in its depths.

She turned to Neko and quietly commanded, "Neko, you do not need to come for a swim. Find cover here on the beach or in the longboat until we return. If we need help, I'll send message." Neko nodded her understanding and before moving off touched Rain and cast Touch of the Sea on her before finding some cover to wait their return. Once settled she cast Shield on herself (+4 to AC for 5 mins. Neko's AC is now 23).

With Rajah's Water Breathing spell on her and Neko's Touch of the Sea spell, Rain removed her magical pike from the strap across her back (she still has her Zul - her trident strapped there and her cutlass at her hip). (She leaves her pack safe and hidden on the shore somewhere.)

She looked to her companions near her, "I have three remaining Touch of the Sea potions. If anyone is in need of one, please take it." (Jiro has his own potion, Variel took one of Rain's potions ? (although I'm not certain of this), and there's Flynn, Amen, Dhaavan and Rajah remaining. Rain bought the potions in Quent and believe they have a minute duration (?). If it is required, Neko will cast Touch of the Sea on the last, remaining person, but let me know, please.)

Rain moved to the waterline, the sea water kissing her boots and waited for her turn to walk into the ocean and beginning swimming. (Not sure in what order people are jumping into the ocean ... but Rain will follow, possibly taking the rear and guarding the back of the order.)

Sea exploration map for visual aid

Everyone knows what the bay looks like from the earlier map provided by Immortal. I've kept this map rather simple (as per Immortal's wishes), basically so people can see where other people are positioned under the water, the ship etc... The yellow portion on the map represents the shoreline where everyone is currently standing, the white is the sea foam and the turquoise is the tropical water we'll be taking a dip in. ;) Please place your respective tokens on the map. Immortal will be back tomorrow to move the game and sea exploration/hunt forward. Thanks again for your patience.

He turns to Amen-set and his eyes narrow.

"I thought you were sending your bird to the spot where the bubbling happened and see if there was any other threat. Why haven't we heard anything about Horus's observations yet?"

He glances at Variel -

"Before advancing do you think we could get some feedback from Dhaavan's second Water Elemental?" he asks him, eyeing the water thoughtfully.

Before there's an answer, Variel is already in the sea and Horatio sighs.

Then he cups his hands and calls out to the ship -

"Ahoy! - keep your eyes peeled, there might be threats in the water," he calls to them.

He scratches his beard absently and waits to hear what Dhaavan's second Elemental has seen in the depths.

Variel, as soon as I see where you've moved on the map, I'll move Horatio to follow you...

Dhaavan's newly summoned water elemental appears as the party imbibes their potions and cast their spells before their excursion into the water.

Upon Dhaavan's command in Aquan, the summoned creature swims out quickly into the deeper part of the bay and begins its search.

Astonishingly, not a minute or two after it reaches the deepest section of the bay (and not far from the first set of bubbles), you can see the water once more begin to roil and bubble, perhaps telling of some violent occurrence below the surface. Just as Variel prepares to get into the water, the bubbles disappear and the water is calm and still again. There is no sign of the second water elemental.

Apologies for the delay.

Horatio watches the party wading in the water and considers casting Cat's Grace, but given the fact that they have much to explore, for now he will decide to hold off on that ability.

He turns to Amen-set and peers at the water.

"You're not a good swimmer; see if you can't get some elevation on the water?" he asks her.

Horatio will move to 6:C, pistols out, watching the melee fighters advance first.

Amen-set turns to Neko -

"Good day, my friend," she says with a serious and sincere voice as she watches the golden cat.

"We shall be back readily. While we are away, would thou be willing to guard the ship?" she asks.

While this may indeed what Neko planned on doing, Amen-set cares for Neko a great deal and does not wish to make assumptions.

Amen-set will use a Double Move to Fly 40 feet above the water - next turn she will begin to advance over the water but for now she is prepared to function as the "Eyes in the Sky" in case there is indeed a dinosaur, shark or some other threat in the water...

As she raises she recalls what Horatio has said about the reefs and shoals and turns to Neko -

"My friend; assuredly there is concern for threats, yet my heart warns me that there is little room for such large creatures with water so shallow... unless, perhaps, it was one of Sobek's offspring..." she says, and a frown colors her features as she readies the musket as she rises above the ground...

As she is only flying straight up, will she need a Fly Check at this time?

Yes; literally, if this was Round 1, she'd have moved up 40 feet via a Double Move. Round 2 she'd move East 40 feet as a Double Move, and continue to do so until she is over the party (approximately).

I had the chance to read the GM's post below; it looks like this won't be a "Round-by-Round" issue, but more narrative? If that is the case, she'd be over Horatio's position (or at least as good as she can be) when they discover the GM's description below.

At this time Horatio and Amen-set will both use Perception Checks to confirm there is no threat.

Horatio's Perception Check -
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25

Amen-set's Perception Check
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27

Horatio will also take 10 on his Knowledge Checks for this part. Given the underwater terrain, I no longer think it could be a Plesiosaurus, given that such a creature would be too large.

However, he hasn't ruled out a Megaladon, and - given Amen-set's earlier comment (and as we are still on Dinosaur Island) it's not too out of the realm of possibility to be some sort of Prehistoric Crocodile - pic shown Image

Our tokens haven't formally moved - do you know where our party would have ended up at?

Flynn wrote:

I have moved Flynn's token to 6:I as you mentioned earlier that you would permit the melee fighters to move before you. Amen-set's token has been moved to 1:H and I have noted on the map that she is flying 40ft above the water - over that spot. She's not too far behind Rain (who's protecting the rear) and Rajah.

I moved everyone's tokens forward for expediency. If you want to be elsewhere on the map (or the swimming order), please move your token accordingly. Variel mentioned earlier that the group should stay close but not be bunched together in case you're dealing with a caster. I tried to follow that instruction. Thanks.

Horatio peers around the area near him and feels an overwhelming sense of frustration as well as guilt.

He is aware that the party is scanning this terrain after he had asked them repeatedly, even to the point that he had ignored the advice of the Pilot-Major to first explore the fort.

Given that neither he - nor Amen-set - have seen any threats below the waters, and that there have been no responses or any issues that are apparent, he is beginning to think the entire plan was a waste of time, and damns the fact that they used their resources only to discover that now.

Not sure if we're able to communicate, but given that there's nothing to see, I guess we go back. For now, I'm not sure how talking underwater works, so I'll leave that to the others, but given that multiple perception checks failed and magic revealed anything, I'm guessing that what we've seen in the bay is probably coincidence.

Horatio waves his arms and tries to get the attention of the others, indicating that he is going back to dry land.

As soon as I hear from the others, I guess I'm going back to explore the fort...

As she is waiting for Horatio to lead her back formally, she feels a sense of frustration and suddenly stumbles on an idea.

Not sure if that will work, but if there is a Megaladon in here, it might encourage it to show itself. Meantime, she'll wait a bit longer, then she's heading back to the fort, too.

As we are not in rounds per se...

Variel knew they had over 2 hours of water breathing allotted to them. Yet he also told Rain that they would only spend 30 minutes of the time searching for this creature in the bay. As such he keeps looking until the time is up. Seeing Horatio indicate he is heading back Variel calls out to him in the water, 30 minutes and then I will be done searching and we can explore the fort then.

Horatio hears the response, just as he's aware of the blood in the water that Amen-set dripped.

He looks around -

"I don't want to waste the spell either, but it looks like this bay is absolutely empty of any threat..." he says with a frustrated tone, angry that the magic and potions were used for nothing.

Realizing that the place is empty and there's no threat, he calls out to Variel -

"Given that there's no threat, I think I'll go back to the beach and keep an eye on the boat with Neko."

Variel: I still don't know what happened to the Elementals, but it's clear there's nothing in the harbor at this point, otherwise we would have already encountered it as soon as we went in to the water (I mean for pacing purposes, not for RP reasons).

As it stands, between your magical blasts of fire and the unopposed Perception Checks that revealed nothing, and the blood in the water and the fact that we've been swimming around since last Friday without running into anything at all except for some fish and coral, then it looks like the Elementals probably went down some deep hole to explore and that's the end of them.

Since this was a bust, I'm planning on having Horatio just go the beach and wait to guard our boat with Neko and Amen-set. For RP purposes, if you'd like to have Horatio keep helping search while the spell lasts, I have no problem with that either, but I guess I'm not up for RPing the whole search as there's nothing here, and I guess I'd rather just Fast-Forward until we're back at the fort.

Island of Empty Eyes Map Current Map

DM EYES ONLY:
7d20 ⇒ (1, 2, 13, 13, 1, 16, 13) = 59

The sea floor seems calm for a few moments until several tentacles come shooting out of the depths. A total of eight tentacles attack, two each striking for Variel, Rajah, Flynn, and Rain. Looking down you see a massive octopus that had perfectly hidden in with it's surroundings.

Attacks on Variel: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 351d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 91d20 + 17 ⇒ (2) + 17 = 191d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 hit for 9 damage

Grab on Variel attempting to pull him closer to bite: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (12) + 27 = 39 successfully grabbed, next round can pull and bite.

----------------------------------------------

Attacks on Rajah: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 251d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 81d20 + 17 ⇒ (20) + 17 = 371d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 2 hits for 13

----------------------------------------------

Attacks on Flynn: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 231d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 61d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 231d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 hit for 6 but not sure if the 23 hit

Potential crit: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 351d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 not sure if that crit as it's same as 23 above if all hit then total of 17 damage

----------------------------------------------

Attacks on Rain: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 281d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 101d20 + 17 ⇒ (14) + 17 = 311d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 I think that hit twice for 16 damage

You guys are up! Variel is currently grappled. The octupus is about 25 feet below you near the sea bed I have placed on map.

GM - per your post; you indicated I was hit for 17 Damage? At most, it looks like I was hit for a total of 12 damage (unless I'm misreading something)? Was the post about a potential confirmation via the 23 meant for someone else?

You did roll a natural 20 on Rajah, but if it does confirm, that would mean the confirmation would tie to Rajah, but even if it confirms, the total damage becomes 19, not 17 - and Horatio still only took 12. Anyway, sorry for the confusion - as soon as I know what's up, I'll put up my status.

I'll adjust my status as soon as I know what's up!

As Horation prepares to swim back to shore, he suddenly feels the sting of two octupi tentacle attacks -

"Damn!" he mutters, glad that they now knew what they're dealing, with, but wishing he had managed to swim back a bit to shore first.

Making me think of this -This.

At this point he moves to 7:H and fires his magical pistol underwater.

Attack with Pistol using Archeologist's Luck and Point Blank Shot and Deadly Aim -
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13

If it hits -
1d8 + 1 + 1 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 + 6 + 2 = 13

Plus Fire damage of -
1d6 ⇒ 3

EDIT: Well, that sucked completely - for now the weapon is "Broken" and it automatically misses. Also, the site I normally go to for rules is currently being "tweaked" - the adjustments are so terrible I literally am having trouble navigating it - I'm sorry for any confusion I may be having.

Caught in the massive tentacle of the octopus Variel knows that spell casting is out of the question and thus focuses instead on just attacking the octopus instead.

Power attack 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 for 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Crit confirm 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22 for 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 surge if necessary 1d6 ⇒ 5
Iterative 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 for 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20

Okay, corrections to attacks and damage from Immortal's post above. He extends his apologies for the mix up as he was in the car, posting from his phone.

Variel = 9 damage and grappled,
Rajah = 19 damage (damage=8+5+6), the crit was for him and Immortal isn't going to draw a crit card),
Flynn = 11 damage (damage=6+5),
Rain = 15 damage (damage=10+5)

Thanks, Co-GM! Horatio's current HP is then 64/75 then.

Sorry about that, totally made a mistake in my post as Rain said.

Flynn I need another roll to confirm the fumble.

Variel your crit confirms. Do you have any ability to bypass the half damage slashing issue with underwater combat though?

Nope, but can I use the surge then on the second attack to make that hit as well? Just hoping the crit card is decapitation or something cool to free me.

Taking multiple nasty hits from the beast, Rajah gathers his wits and calculates the distance between them all before swimming to a specific area before using his healing powers upon them all.

I have no idea if channel energy is like a "globe" when you channel. So I'm not sure if the octopus who is 25' deep will get hit or not. I don't have selective channeling so I can't exclude it.

Channel Energy: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4) = 10 It should get everyone who has been hit.

AC 24; Hp's 61/70(Was at 51 hp's before channel); Channel energy(1/6 used)

Is there a penalty to shooting a scorching ray while under water at an underwater target?

Or can I use hydraulic push to move an ally and break a grab?
