"Yes, let us drink to the glory of Iomedae. Tomorrow, we ride to vanquish the forces of Asmodeus."
Sama'el Val'varen
Sama'el smiles to the group, "Thank you Nowzai, if you buy the first round, I will buy the rest. I believe the inn I am staying at is still open." Sama'el looks around the Cusp, "Granted, it's no where near this opulent but the drinks are cold and the food is hot."
Assuming everyone comes I will offer to tell my story.
"Where was I...?" Sama'el pauses thoughtfully, "Ahh yes, my mothers deal with my father. Realizing that she will lose her new power in 9 months my mother started to make more deals with more fiends. She used her new power to summon minor demons and devils and would make deals with them to horde as much power as she could. My mother developed quite the reputation, she became the Gypsy Witch. Nine months later when I was born, my mother was surprised and relieved when she did not lose her powers, nor did my father come to claim me. I learned later, he didn't want to raise me, he could find me any time he desired."
"Over the next several years we moved from one village to another, the Gypsy Witch was always welcomed at first because she had the gift of foresight and could cure curses and diseases. She did not ask much at first, a few gold coins, food, safety, but no matter what the villagers paid, their fortunes always turned blacker. So more and more would come seeking the Gypsy Witch’s help, and her demands for payments grew. By the end the villages would provide her with any old relics, family heirlooms, books in unknown languages and any other magical items they were not even aware they had. Once my mother had gained everything of value, she would leave, and without fail the village died within one passing of the moon."
Sama'el pauses again "I am sorry, I have not spoken about this in a long time, I mourn for those lost towns now, I carry that with me every day."Sama'el takes a sip of his wine, "In time my mother realized that she could sell my soul to one of my fathers rivals and increase her power ten fold, I was opposed to this and we fought, I was lucky enough to survive, but my mother cursed me before she died. After her death, I felt freedom for the first time, but I was also in a world that looks at my kind in horror, my mother had been able to shield what I was with her magic so I was not prepared for the hated that followed me where ever I went. I wandered the world for over 40 years, trying to find a way to remove my mothers curse and take down the wall that blocked my power. It was during this time, as I explored ancient ruins in Osirion that I met my first friend."
Sama'el pauses and smiles as he remembers, "He was a very old human, I was never able to find his ethnicity and he never told me his name so I simple called him Vudar, which is Varisian for friend. He did not mind that I was a demon-spawn, in fact he was fascinated by my story and always wanted to know more about me. Once I told him what I had been through he agreed to assist me in my search to remove my mothers curse and we spent several years together cataloging the tombs and researching the history. He assured me that he had heard of an artifact that would remove the curse."
"A few months after we first met, my father finally found me and came to claim what was his. Worried about my new friend, I agreed to let my father take me if he spared Vudar's life. It was the first selfless act of my life, but Vudar, who worshiped Irori had been teaching me about honor, loyalty and inner strength. He taught me about the power that comes from self-enlightenment, helping others and walking a path and at that moment I knew what it was to care about someone more than myself."
"I remember my father laughing and telling me I had no leverage to ask for anything, he would take me and kill my friend just to prove that to me. It was then that Vudar stopped pretending to be afraid, he simple stepped in front of me, spoke three words of power in a language I did not recognize and opened a portal and sent my father screaming be into hell."
"I remember being stunned, he had banished him so easily, my father is not some lesser devil either, he has true power. Vudar would never speak to me about how he was able to do it, only that by being willing to sacrifice myself for a friend, I had proven my worth to him, and to his God, Irori."
Sama'el smiles again lost in thought, "He spent many years teaching me how to fight, how to treat my body as a temple and to turn my anger and my bitterness into calm and resolve. Most importantly though, Vudar gave me a purpose, set me on a path to be more than I ever thought I could be. He taught me about right and wrong, and how though both are necessary I should always strive to be more than people expect."
"After many years we finally stumbled across the tomb we had been looking for and found the artifact. It was a small black ball that looked like liquid ink. As I reached out to it, it flowed into my hand and then into my skin. As it did I felt the wall that was blocking my power crumble."
"Once the curse was removed Vudar told me that it was time for me to walk my own path but to always remember what I had learned."
"I have spent the last 60 years researching evil outsiders, learning their weaknesses, destroying them where ever I find them. That passion has lead me to Cauldron, there is something evil going on in this city, I am not sure what it is yet, but that is why I am here. I believe that we all walk a similar path and it was not chance but fate that brought us together. If you will have me, I will be a loyal friend and I will walk the darkness with you all"
TL;DR - I hate evil outsiders, my father, who is one is trying to kill me, I have trained under a worshiper of Irori and follow the path he set me on. And I am in Cauldron because something tells me that something evil is going down and I am here to help stop it
Epik
"Welcome to the Party Sama'el. I am inspired by your quest to eradicate the diabolical curse that plagues this city. I look forward to slaying evil with you."
Dalamus Othreleth
"Sam that is an incredible story. When is the last time you heard from your father? Who exactly is your father? With a story like that, it just leaves me thirsting for more...but not all today. We will need something to talk about on those cold dark nights around the fire."
Sama'el Val'varen
"I have not seen my father in almost 60 years, Vudar was not sure how long his banishment would last, as the veils that protect this world have been weakening for some time."
"I have spent that time researching as much as I can about my father but the truth is, there is not much written about him. My mother called him Altarath, a name I can not find in any books, she was convinced that he was a prince of hell though, so I do not know what I will do if and when he returns. So I study, grow in power in the hopes that when he does return I will be able to stand my ground and defeat him"

Epik, all of that is available. The clergy at the Temple are very strained and seem tired. The temple, however, is spotless and smells exceptionally clean.
Everyone else: the map to Jared's sends you about 40 miles due north into the mountains. It's 2 maybe 3 days by foot. Any other prep before heading out?

Sama'el looks to Nemoris, "You seem to know your way around animals, would you help me in selecting a good mount and gear for travel tomorrow morning?"
I would also like to buy a scroll of Keep Watch and scribe it and buy a couple of extra's for the trip to use as needed.

Sama'el looks to Nemoris, "You seem to know your way around animals, would you help me in selecting a good mount and gear for travel tomorrow morning?"
Glad to help! I also suppose I should find something that will make it easier for me to see in the dark. I've got a few torches, but nothing fancy. Any ideas?
Not sure if I can really help or roll something that will give Sam a better horse, but I'll go with and try to avoid picking out a nag at least!
DM Fflash
Any input from Magma?
Three of you have horses, are the other three (Epik, Dalamus & Magma) intending to buy horses as well?
@Sam, I don't have a random generator for Skie, it's been preset for a while. It'll go random after Chapter 5 since that's as far as I built it :). Those things will need to be researched or purchased in Osibi
@Nemoris, a DC20 Handle Animal Check can give +1hp/HD (not to exceed max hps) for picking out a horse if you wish
Sama'el Val'varen
Sama'el walks with Nemoris towards the stables, "Yes there are a few options that will allow you to see in the dark." Sama'el holds up his hand and starts to tick off on his fingers, "First and easiest would be to see if we could find a ever burning torch, it is a heat-less flame that you could carry in your pocket if you so desired and could pull out as needed." Ticking off his second finger Sam continues, "Your second option would be a magical spell, alas, I can not cast the ability to see in darkness currently but if the chance arises for me to learn it I will do so. Lastly, I could build you a set of goggles when we get back that would grant you the ability to see in the dark while worn. Sadly, I we don't have the time currently to make them, but on our return if you are able to buy the materials, I will gladly make them for you."
Epik
"I vote for paying the temple to cast a continual flame spell on one of our lanterns. I am willing to share the cost for the spell. A permanent light source will be useful in the darklands."
Yes, Epik will procure a horse with saddle, saddle bags and feed.
Sama'el Val'varen
Good call on Sunrods, I will grab 5 as well.
Anyone know if there is any sort of a collapsible pole or rod? Thinking a Con Flame on an extendable rod could be a cool utility item
Also I have a Bag of Holding and a Haversack, so we should be able to carry some larger items as needed. If we don't hear from Magma he can just ride in the bag :)
Magma Iron Clan

The Trek Northward
In the mid-morning, after everyone has made their purchases, the party sets forth by horseback due north of the city. Once you depart the gate, you immediately set off down the side of the caldera and trek up and down the mountain ridges, riding through game trails that meander up and down, over and around, most of the time single file. The horses for the most part do a solid job of finding footing and all they don't move fast, they certainly save you the tiring climbs.
Part way through the day, you notice some massive birds flying off in the distance. At first you think they're close to you, but after a bit you realize they must be three to four times the size of your horses. Thankfully they don't come near you.
As evening falls, you look for a place to camp and find a small clearing dominated by recently budding yellow flowers. A small creek runs down the side of the mountain.
You spot a track in the mud near the creek bed. It's human in appearance, barefoot, but at least 2 to 3 feet long.
Magma, you can purchase a fully charged wand of CMW at the Temple of Pharasma. I'll give you the details in a separate post. The Temple is an eerie and unwelcoming place. The high priestess is unavailable, but her second, Ike Iverson meets you at the Temple gates and cuts the deal with you. He forgoes the tax as long as you tell him what you're off to go do, otherwise you must pay the tax.

@Sam: Requires Survival
The Temple of Pharasma is a towering cathedral, one of the most impressive and beautiful buildings in Cauldron. It's made of stone and a hum in the air as well as an oppressive feeling as you approach the gates leads you to believe that heavy magic is involved as well.
The clerics of Pharasma in Cauldron are a standoffish, curt, and even creepy lot. Tey are responsible for dealing with the unclaimed dead of Cauldron and maintain vast catacombs for anyone who's rich enough to afford the burial but doesn't have a personal crypt (as most of the noble families do). Most folks in Cauldron are cremated and black smoke is often seen rising from the Temple.

The Trek Northward
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Survival: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21This is really out of character. Sorry guys, I had less than 100g left from upgrading the bow, so I'm not able to pickup much or pitch in on anything. I did already have sunrods though.
Ah, interesting foot prints over in the mud by this creek bed. I can most likely track these if we're curious. They also seem to be 2-3 times larger than a normal human print, but besides that look the same.
After a pause, and some thought... Whatever made this had to be quite large, I'm not sure I'm comfortable camping for the night without looking into this and at least making sure we're not on a giants doorstep...
