Maelorn abandons any pretense of stealth, moving around the edges of the pool (Double move - V17->U17->T17->S17->R16}

Zane produces a scroll of Expeditious retreat, casting the spell and feeling the speed infuse his body in preperation of the assault. Wanr in one hand Cane in the other he prepares to attempt his previous casting trick.


Zane:

A theory unfolds in your mind.
What if it is not just Shocking Grasp; but that you could cast ANY touch effect spell through the cane? Your cane IS your bonded object after all...
Perhaps some experimentation to confirm is called for.

Bron pratfalls into the deep spot with a huge splash, Nakoda almost does but stumbles back.
Zane casts a spell to get ready, Maelorn splashes forward.

Sputtering as he breaks the surface of the murky water, Bron quickly reorients himself before making a beeline towards the campfire and the people surrounding it.

Strange, Red-1 through 4 haven’t moved at all.

Sputtering as he breaks the surface of the murky water, Bron quickly reorients himself before making a beeline towards the campfire and the people surrounding it. He takes the full round to dogpaddle over to the other side and climb out.

MAELORN___________________
Maelorn casts his second Bless (50' Burst will get everyone, including the waitresses should it become relevant), and move north 10 feet (difficult terrain bites).

ENEMY______________________
As Maelorn moves around Bron, his foot comes down on something soft and warm. A hulking man/rat (Red-7) lunges out of hiding and stabs Maelorn for 9 piercing with a piercing shriek of victory.
A tanglefoot bag comes sailing out of the north and lands on Bron. He moves out of the way just enough to not be pinned, but he is still reduced to half move.
You also hear footsteps running from the west.

[npc] ZANE_______________________
Experimenting further, Zane casts Shocking Grasp from the wand into his bonded cane, and, yes, he can hold the charge there. Little sparks pop off the cane at odd intervals as you look at it. Seeing the enemy reveal themselves, Zane starts moving towards them.

[npc] NAKODA____________________
Nakoda, seeing the rat/man at Red-7, fires her bow at him, only to see the arrow bounce off.

Maelorn moves closer to the illuminated circle, and presuming that everyone there doesn't seem to be a dummy of some sort, he channels positive energy, exempting on #7.

MAELORN____________
"Something's not right." Maelorn muttered, looking at the circle of light.
Maelorn moves closer to the illuminated circle, and presuming that everyone there doesn't seem to be a dummy of some sort, he channels positive energy to heal all for 2, exempting only Red-7.

ENEMY______________
Red-7 snarls at Bron and slashes him for 4 cutting damage, but Bron manages to fend off the nasty looking bite.
Red-6 moves sure footedly over the rubble to make contact with Maelorn.
An arrow from the direction of Red-5 skips off of Maelorn’s breastplate.
Again, Red-1 through 4 fail to move at all.
You can see the hostages struggling feebly, they are still alive at least.

[npc] ZANE_______________
Carefully moving over shadowy rubble, Zane steps next to Red-7 and reaches out with his sparking cane. The creature seems to instinctively avoid it though.

[npc] NAKODA____________
Again, Nakoda watches a perfectly shot arrow bounce off the creature harmlessly. She suddenly realizes what they face and shouts ”Wererats! Don’t let them bite you! You need silver to hurt them!”

Nakoda growled to herself, not having expected to run into Werecreatures in the city.. Not like this. And since she was unprepared, there was little she was able to do directly, so she did one that she could do, and began the rolling chant that was the Shoanti battle-chant, her voice rolling across the water.

Inspire Courage begun. (+1 to attack and damage)

Say, what was in that little bag the crone gave you? She said you'd need it...

Zane:

Depends...
If you just want to zap him with the shocking grasp, all you need to do is make a touch attack vs his touch AC.
If you want to do weapon damage as well, you'd have to make a regular attack vs his full AC.

Howz a ball o' metal ta the face do ya?" With that, he swings once more at the creature, but misses wildly and shatters a stump nearby.

MAELORN_______________
Maelorn unlimbers his silver hammer and strikes the man in front of Bron, but misses as the creature dodges with unnatural quickness.

ENEMY_________________
Red-5 breaks from his cover and starts splashing through the water towards the fight.
Red-6 hits Maelorn with a bite for 4 points and a dagger thrust for 4 as well.
Red-7 attacks Bron with bite and dagger, but misses both.

ZANE__________________
With surprising skill Zane strikes out with his cane, tapping the weapon to the side of the enemy's head. A blue-white spark leaps between the cane and the creature with a loud SNAP, and the creature gives a squeek as it contorts with with outrage. The air smells of burned hair and ozone.

NAKODA_______________
Nakoda growled to herself, not having expected to run into Werecreatures in the city.. Not like this. Gritting his teeth as his rage continues to fuel his blows, Bron swings the heavy ball of his flail once more, hoping to bludgeon the were creature.

Continuing the chant, Nakoda felt the bag that the wise woman had given her, and looked inside. She could stow the bow and arrow for now, and just back up Bron.. It was likely better if she gave him a hand anyways. If they could get them far enough away, she might be able to go help the captives.


Nakoda:

Looking into the bag, you see a fine silver powder.
Silver Blanche!
You pour it on a weapon and place it on a flame for a full round. It melts and forms a temporary coating on the weapon. It will last until the weapon makes a solid hit.
There are four doses present here, a dose will coat one weapon or ten units of ammunition.


Round 16--

Maelorn efficiently brings his silver hammer around again, and smashes into Red-7's left arm! The Wererat yowls as the hammer wound sizzles.

Maelorn:
You realize standing next to Red-4 that the cloaked figures are wicker dummies with rags wrapped around them. Decoys! The hostages (including your mother) lying on the broken piece of dock appear to be real and struggling desperately with their bonds.

Still hampered by the most rancid tanglefoot bag anyone has ever smelled, Bron makes another rage fuelled swing, the heavy ball of his flail just clipping the wererats chin. Any ordinary warrior would have had his face torn off by the sheer power of the blow, but the wererat just sneers at you; though you all notice that his legs wobble as he refocuses on Bron instead of Maelorn now.

Nakoda maintains her inspiring Shoanti chant, filling you with courage. Grasping the little bag the nameless witch gave her, she looks inside. Looking up with a gasp as she realizes what lies within, she immediately makes a snap decision, stows her bow and double moves around the sinkhole towards the hostages. And the burning fire of the torches.

[npc] Zane concentrates and uses the wand to cast Shocking Grasp into his bonded cane again (defensively, avoiding the attack of opportunity) and holds the charge.

The wererat (Red-5) throws his tanglefoot bag at Maelorn and hits! The sticky rancid webbing not only interferes with his fighting ability (you’re -2 to attack), but he finds his feet glued to the ground! You are fixed to that square, ST check DC17 to break free, or 15 points cutting damge to cut free. You can still fight though. Triumphant, the wererat gives a high pitched giggle, draws his shortsword and saunters up to Maelorn through the swamp, relishing his certain kill…

The wererat (Red-6), also sqeeks with glee as he stabs Maelorn for 4 piercing damage, but misses the bite as Maelorn parries.

The wererat (Red-7) takes a step back, repositioning himself for another attack.

Sense Motive DC15:
You see fear in the wererats eyes…

It is at this moment you realize just why the tanglefoot bags were so rancid. As if a shadow had come to life, a dark mass rolls across the ground, washing over all in its path. Clicking and snapping in a terrible cacophony of thousands upon thousands of tiny bodies, several scuttling forms identify the unstoppable throng as a terrible, hungry host of flesh-eating cockroaches!
The area they cover is marked in yellow.
Maelorn takes 2 damage and Bron takes 5 from many many tiny bites, and Maelorn is seriously distracted by them gains the Nauseated condition; no attacks or spells, single move action, but Bron grits his teeth and ignores the distraction.

The good news is that the wererats don’t appear to have any more of their special tanglefoot bags.

Grinning as he catches the wererat's attention, Bron's expressions shifts rapidly as cockroaches well up from the ground itself, digging into the folds of his armor and working their way into his flesh. Grimacing, the raging streetfighter focuses on his rage as he steps forward, intent on taking out the wererat even as the raoches crawl over his leg.

Attack:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Damage:1d10 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Dashing forward Zane again strikes with his cane bringing the stinging electrical charge to his enemy.

Round 17--

Maelorn, driven to distraction by the crawling of insects all over his body, gives a mighty heave and breaks free of the entangling strands!

Struggling with the entangling strands and the bugs, Bron struggles forward and swings at Red-7 again, but misses.

Stepping forward (and staying out of the bugs), Zane seemingly effortlessly reaches out and touches Red-7. A blue-white spark flashes from the cane to the wererat, the rat shrieks and seems to leap five feet into the air, then collapses his body smoking.

[npc] Nakoda slogs through the swamp towards the hostages, as she approaches the dock, she realizes the standing figures were wicker dummies. With relief, she reaches back and takes an arrow out of her quiver…

Red-5 misses Maelorn with his sword and bite, Red-6 misses with his dagger, but hits Maelorn with his bite for 3 damage. The insects crawl over Maelorn and Bron biting Maelorn for 4 and Bron for 6. Maelorn concentrates and is able to act normally (no longer Nauseated.); while Bron is overcome by the distraction (Nauseated).

Maelorn lays out another positive burst, exempting #7 (and if there is a downed wererat nearby, exempting that one). (1d6 ⇒ 1 HP healed). He then moves away from the bugs (to O15).


You can reroll any 1s when healing.


Male Human Wizard 8

Drawing a scrol Zane stes forward, recent weeks of casting while in the heat of battle serving to bolster his defenses, leaving no opening for attack, his hand shoots forward unleashing a familiar multi colored stream of light at the 3 were rats before him.

Feeling nauseous as the cockroaches continue to bite at him, Bron grits his teeth before pulling at a wineskin at his hip. Taking a deep drink of the ale within, he expression shifts to his usual grin as he swings at the wererat closest to him who is still standing.

Using Raging Drunk and Good For What Ails You to take a move action to drink alcohol with no attack of opportunity granted. Result is to extends rage by one round and allow a reroll on the save the made me become nauseous. If Save is made, the Nauseous state is suppressed until rage ends. Standard to attack wererat.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13


Nakoda's Inspire Courage is in effect; +1 to hit, +1 damage.

Round 18--

Using his faith, Maelorn raises his holy symbol and channels a positive energy burst, healing all but the downed wererat for 3. He then steps out of the swarm.

Zane moves forward drawing a scroll. Flanking Maelorn, he extends his hand as he reads off the scroll; the letters flash and fade, and a familia multicolored stream of light washes over the wererats. Red-6 managed to shut his eyes in time and is unaffected. Red-5 didn’t, and is blind and stunned.

Bron grits his teeth before pulling at a wineskin at his hip. Taking a deep drink of the ale within, he expression shifts to his usual grin as he throws off the nausea. He swings at Red-6 and connects! The wererat takes a tremendous hit to the left arm, but again seems to take no damage. Wait, you see a little blood on your weapon. You can hurt the wererats after all!
[npc] Nakoda continues her song inspiring courage, pulls out an arrow and dips it into her bag, coating it with silver blanche. She then thrusts the arrowhead into the torch flame, where it melts and forms a silvery coating.

You all see an arrow sprout in the middle of Red-5s back and it yowls in annoyance.

Red-6 again stabs Maelorn for 4 piercing damage, but misses with the bite.

Red-5 still stands blinded and stunned.

The flesh-eating cockroach swarm again surges forward to cover Red-6 and Maelorn again. Red-6 seems to take no damage, but Maelorn and Bron both take 3 damage from the biting swarm. Maelorn again resists the distraction of the swarm, while Bron’s rage seems to have made him immune for the moment.

Ah, so that's how that blanche works! I was going to try and set 10 at once, but that didn't make any sense!
~Inspire Courage~ still in effect. +1 Atk/Dmg

Not oblivious to the plight of her friends, Nakoda still cannot figure any way to assist at the moment, so instead sets another arrow with the weapon blanche and lets another arrow fly at her previous target.

Attack:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21, Dmg:1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

ROUND 19--

Maelorn is unconscious, but stable.

While continuing to maintain her song of Courage, Nakoda sets another arrow with silver blanche in a torch, takes the previous arrow out and fires it at Red-5. Another arrow flies by her ear and sinks into her target also. Both arrows hiss in the flesh of the wererat.

Splashing up behind Nakoda is a strange elf; nut brown skin, mottled green and brown leather armor, holding a composite longbow of strange design. As you watch, he pulls out a silver tipped arrow from a special waist quiver. From what you can see, he has three of them left. You also see he has a flask of alchemist’s fire hung at his belt.

[npc] Bron swings at Red-6 again, but misses.

[npc] Zane takes a step back, hisses “Eyes” at Bron and unleashes one of his last Color Spray spells, only this time making sure to cover the cockroach swarm as well. Bron and Red-6 save, but Red-5 is stunned again, and the cockroach swarm seems to collapse, stunned and blinded. (You’re pretty sure they’ll recover though.)

With a snarl, Red-6 steps away from Bron to attack Zane, managing to stab him for 3 piercing damage. Red-5 continues to stand blinded and stunned again.

I hate to say this, since it likely means I'm toast, but aren't Cockroach Swarms mindless (and so immune to mind affecting spells like Color Spray)?


Male Human Wizard 8

Growling from the pain of the dagger, Zane brings his cane up in a well placed strike, driving the head into the were rat thug's jaw.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

A brief moment of clarity seems to grip the raging brawler as he, spotting Maelorn collapse next to him, grabs the cleric and with he strengh granted to him by his rage, lifts the cleric and puts him over his shoulder, hauling him away from the melee before the insects can finish feasting on him. Risking his own well-being, Bron takes himself and the unconscious cleric out of the cockroach swarm.

Moving full movement possible carrying 460 pounds or less. Not sure of Maelorn's exact weight. Will move to place away from both the cockroaches AND the wererats. 5 of 8 rounds.


Female Human(Shoanti) Skald 8

It is an almost mechanical process for her-- arrow, bag, fire, fire-- and Nakoda glances over at the new arrival, but since he was not harming her or her friends, she was content to make sure that the Wererats were being dealt with.

Silver Arrow, Fire. Attack(Red-5):1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20,1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4


I know what you mean, but this swarm is not immune to Color Spray.

ROUND 20--

Maelorn is unconscious, but stable.

Zane lashes out at the wererat, managing to clock the quickmoving creature in the jaw. Is the cane silver?

Bron grabs Maelorn and drags him out of the stunned swarm to relative safety.

While continuing to maintain her song of Courage, Nakoda sets another arrow with silver blanche in a torch, takes the previous arrow out and fires it at Red-5, sinking it into his back.

The strange elf also fires into Red-5, and it collapses, dead.

Rattled by the sudden reversal of fortune, Red-6 attacks Zane in a frenzy but is parried at every stroke.

It's funny I always thought of it as having a silver griffon's head and actually started typing that but didn't want you to think I was just pulling in out of nowhere because we're fighting weres.


Your description just mentions "metal cane", and given the finances of a level one character is most likely not silver. I'll wager after this you'll change that, but right now the wererat just grins as the wound you gave him fastheals to nothing.
