"If Abigail is taking point, it should be her decision where we go next," Arma says. She takes one of the fireworks and one of the vials of defoliant.

"Right. Let's go back a bit and take that second tunnel." she replies and leads the way.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Perception:
Arma: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Relia: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Tessa: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Azil: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Just past a small cave-in on the western wall, the tunnel opens into a rounded cavern with rough and irregular walls. Occasional piles of fallen rock litter the passage, but not to the degree that navigating it is impossible. A fair number of bones litter the cave floor here.

Tessa's sixth sense suddenly alerts her to danger as three shapes detach from the ceiling. The monsters look like hideous octopuses, their thin, hook-lined tentacles connected by a fleshy web.

Initiative:
Tessa: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Darkmantles: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Arma: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Abigail: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Relia: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Inky shadows spread out from the first one, snuffing out Tessa's magical lights and plunging the cave into darkness! Abigail feels the other two things reaching for her! One of them slams her with its tentacles, but fails to grab a hold.

Slam: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 121d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d4 ⇒ 3
Grab: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

3 damage to Abigail. Tessa can take her surprise round action before the creatures act again.

Knowledge (arcana) DC 11:
These creatures are darkmantles, magical beasts that hunt in the dark places beneath the earth. They can conjure magical darkness and squeeze their prey to death with their tentacles.

K (arcana): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
Tessa quickly identifies the creatures, even before she got a good look at them, "Darkmantles! Careful! What is up with all of these creatures that like to choke their prey?" she mutters the second half to herself, then, considering her options, moves off to the side, out of range from the creatures.

Move action to get somewhat out of the way.
Just a note: what exactly is our light source? Tessa didn't prep Light today. I figured we had a torch or something.

Oops, that should have been Relia's magic light. I forgot to update the map too--I will do so in the morning.

As Tessa backs away down the corridor, the darkmantle continue to assault Abigail. One of them manages to grab a hold of the ranger, squeezing and taking her with its hooked tentacles.

4 damage to Abigail and she is grappled. Everybody can take their first round actions.

Or the attack misses completely no matter.

Abigail feels the creature has a solid hold on her. She drops her axe, pulls her machete, and tries to slash her way out of its grip.

Tessa closes her eyes, figuring it wouldn’t make much of a difference either way, and shoots for wherever the closest darkmantle sounds like it is.

Arma slashes away blindly.

Your efforts continue to prove futile as you fail to hit the darkmantles. It's very difficult to strike what you can't see.

Not to kill us all or anything, but how? Light, as a 0-level spell, shouldn't (from my understanding, anyway) be able to counter a higher-level darkness spell. They'd need to be at least equal level for that.

As the light returns to the room, Tessa quickly identifies her target and shoots at the closest darkmantle.
Crossbow, into melee: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 4 = 171d8 ⇒ 6

The darkmantle used the spell to dispel Relia's initial light spell, which supersedes the normal effects of the spell.

The remaining creature tries to hit Arma, but it misses. The tide of battle has turned in your favor!

Abigail finds untapped reserves as the tide turns. It appears the darkmantles do well when they surprise their foe, but suffer in extended battles where they stay in the open.

"Press on Friends!" she says as she swings upward, planting her feet for momentum.

Arma attacks the monster with a frustrated shout.

Abigail's machete cleaves into the darkmantle, and as it reels in pain, Arma slips behind it and drives her dagger into its back. The monster falls to the floor, the grueling battle finally at an end!

When you get a chance to search the cave, you discover little more than the bones that litter teh floor. The bones are a minor curiosity, because most of them belong to bipedal creatures, but many are decidedly not humanoid, as evidenced by skull shape, finger bones, and other physiological differences. Proper identification is confounded because the skeletons are not intact; rather, their bones are separated and mixed together like a disassembled jigsaw puzzle. At least one skeleton is clearly human, though.

You can attempt a Knowledge (nature) check to try to identify some of the creatues.

HP 32/32; AC 17/12/15, Saves Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +3 (+2 v. charms, compulsions); Per +4/+6 (Familiar +9), Init +6; 4/8 Presience Female Aquatic Elf Diviner (foresight) 5

Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

"What are these?" Tessa wonders aloud, bending down to study the skeletons covering the floor.

Some of the smaller skeletons seem to belong to chokers and monkey goblins. Others are ichthyic or avian in nature--Tessa remembers reading a few rare tomes on anatomy that depicted the bones of such exotic humanoids. She thinks they might belong to creatures known as skum and strix, respectively.

"That thing almost did me... We need to proceed with more caution... I'm in bad shape..." comments Abigail, not that interested in the bones, but in more pressing matters.

Tessa: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Azil: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

Abigail leads the way back to the main cavern, and then to the northwest. A section of the northern wall in this spacious cavern has been hollowed out and veins of various crystals exposed, which refract any light cast upon their surface. Small piles of rock are heaped on the ground nearby, where the earth has been carefully chiseled away to expose the potentially precious stones. A tunnel leads to the north, faint light shining at its far end.

Azil begins to flit about excitedly. Tessa can feel through her empathic link that her familiar is warning her about creatures nearby, though none of you see any.

Knowledge (engineering) DC 10 or Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC 15:
The excavation is not a full-blown effort to mine the cave, but is instead the effort of a singular or small group of creatures with a specific purpose in mind (extracting crystals and precious stones).

Auto-succeed the Engineering check.
Tessa takes one look around the cavern, then puts her back to the wall, "This wasn't natural. Someone mined the walls for precious stones. And I think they may well still be here...."

"Well, they'll get what's coming for them..." comments Abigail sourly, her bec de corbin ready to stab at any incoming foe.

Readied attack:

Relia looks around, but doesn't see any signs of creatures nearby. Abigail holds her polearm at the ready, but nothing rushes out to attack.
