Just past a small cave-in on the western wall, the tunnel opens into a rounded cavern with rough and irregular walls. Occasional piles of fallen rock litter the passage, but not to the degree that navigating it is impossible. A fair number of bones litter the cave floor here.
Tessa's sixth sense suddenly alerts her to danger as three shapes detach from the ceiling. The monsters look like hideous octopuses, their thin, hook-lined tentacles connected by a fleshy web.
Darkmantles: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Arma: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Abigail: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Relia: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Inky shadows spread out from the first one, snuffing out Tessa's magical lights and plunging the cave into darkness! Abigail feels the other two things reaching for her! One of them slams her with its tentacles, but fails to grab a hold.
Slam: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 121d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d4 ⇒ 3
Grab: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
3 damage to Abigail. Tessa can take her surprise round action before the creatures act again.

Tessa Mithrandir |

K (arcana): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
Tessa quickly identifies the creatures, even before she got a good look at them, "Darkmantles! Careful! What is up with all of these creatures that like to choke their prey?" she mutters the second half to herself, then, considering her options, moves off to the side, out of range from the creatures.
Move action to get somewhat out of the way.
Just a note: what exactly is our light source? Tessa didn't prep Light today. I figured we had a torch or something.

DM Brainiac |

Oops, that should have been Relia's magic light. I forgot to update the map too--I will do so in the morning.
Slams: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 201d4 ⇒ 1
Grab: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 241d4 ⇒ 3
As Tessa backs away down the corridor, the darkmantle continue to assault Abigail. One of them manages to grab a hold of the ranger, squeezing and taking her with its hooked tentacles.
4 damage to Abigail and she is grappled. Everybody can take their first round actions.

Relia Pavel |

"Well that makes things difficult." She moves to where she thinks she hears the attack, and stabs at the creature. She slips and almost impales Tessa. "Sorry!

Or the attack misses completely no matter.

Tessa Mithrandir |

Tessa makes a wild guess and fires a literal shot in the dark, aiming for the space in front of Abigail and hoping for a lucky hit.
Crossbow, Into Melee, Total Concealment: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 3 - 4 = 81d100 ⇒ 701d8 ⇒ 1
Unfortunately, luck doesn't seem to be on her side today.

DM Brainiac |

You slash, stab, and shoot in the darkness, but none of your attacks land home. The creature grappling Abigail continues to squeeze while the other two attack Arma and Relia. Both hit, and Relia ends up ensnared in a crushing grasp!
Grapple and Constrict: 1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 5 = 281d4 + 1d4 ⇒ (3) + (4) = 7

Grab vs. Arma: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Grab vs. Relia: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 151d4 ⇒ 2
7 damage to Abigail, 4 damage to Arma, 3 damage to Relia. Abigail and Relia are grappled.

Tessa Mithrandir |

Weird. I thought I posted a few days ago, but I guess it didn’t go through. Anyway.....
Tessa closes her eyes, figuring it wouldn’t make much of a difference either way, and shoots for wherever the closest darkmantle sounds like it is.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 4 = 111d100 ⇒ 981d8 ⇒ 3

DM Brainiac |

Your efforts continue to prove futile as you fail to hit the darkmantles. It's very difficult to strike what you can't see.
The ones grappling Abigail and Relia continue to try to squeeze them, but their grips don't prove strong enough and both women miraculously are released! The other tries to hit Arma again, but misses!
Grapple and Constrict, Abigail: 1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 5 = 14
Grapple and Constrict, Relia: 1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 5 = 14
Slam vs. Arma: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Abigail and Relia are no longer grappled.

Tessa Mithrandir |

Not to kill us all or anything, but how? Light, as a 0-level spell, shouldn't (from my understanding, anyway) be able to counter a higher-level darkness spell. They'd need to be at least equal level for that.
As the light returns to the room, Tessa quickly identifies her target and shoots at the closest darkmantle.
Crossbow, into melee: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 4 = 171d8 ⇒ 6

damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
twf: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Arma strikes at the darkmantle in front of her with both daggers, and slides around it as she does so.

DM Brainiac |

Though Arma misses with her daggers, Tessa manages to shoot one of the darkmantles, allowing Abigail to finish it off with a two-handed machete chop.
The remaining two monsters try to grab the alchemist and the ranger. They come close, but neither one hits!
Slam vs. Arma: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Slam vs. Abgiail: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Tessa loads, aims, and fires again, but her shot goes wide, sticking into the already-dead darkmantle instead of doing anything useful.
Crossbow, Into Melee: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 4 = 9

Relia Pavel |

Relia moves in and stabs at the darkmantle with her trident.

Abigail Garrett |
Abigail finds untapped reserves as the tide turns. It appears the darkmantles do well when they surprise their foe, but suffer in extended battles where they stay in the open.
"Press on Friends!" she says as she swings upward, planting her feet for momentum.
Machete, 2-handed, PA: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 7 - 1 = 171d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 3 = 10

DM Brainiac |

Abigail's machete cleaves into the darkmantle, and as it reels in pain, Arma slips behind it and drives her dagger into its back. The monster falls to the floor, the grueling battle finally at an end!
When you get a chance to search the cave, you discover little more than the bones that litter teh floor. The bones are a minor curiosity, because most of them belong to bipedal creatures, but many are decidedly not humanoid, as evidenced by skull shape, finger bones, and other physiological differences. Proper identification is confounded because the skeletons are not intact; rather, their bones are separated and mixed together like a disassembled jigsaw puzzle. At least one skeleton is clearly human, though.
You can attempt a Knowledge (nature) check to try to identify some of the creatues.

Tessa Mithrandir |

Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
"What are these?" Tessa wonders aloud, bending down to study the skeletons covering the floor.

DM Brainiac |

Arma: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Relia: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Tessa: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Azil: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Abigail leads the way back to the main cavern, and then to the northwest. A section of the northern wall in this spacious cavern has been hollowed out and veins of various crystals exposed, which refract any light cast upon their surface. Small piles of rock are heaped on the ground nearby, where the earth has been carefully chiseled away to expose the potentially precious stones. A tunnel leads to the north, faint light shining at its far end.
Azil begins to flit about excitedly. Tessa can feel through her empathic link that her familiar is warning her about creatures nearby, though none of you see any.

Relia Pavel |

"They look like pretty rocks, but that's all I can tell." Relia pulls out her trident and waits to see if the creatures reveal themselves.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Tessa Mithrandir |

Auto-succeed the Engineering check.
Tessa takes one look around the cavern, then puts her back to the wall, "This wasn't natural. Someone mined the walls for precious stones. And I think they may well still be here...."

Abigail Garrett |
"Well, they'll get what's coming for them..." comments Abigail sourly, her bec de corbin ready to stab at any incoming foe.
Ready Attack, Bec de corbin, PA: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 1 = 251d10 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 3 = 13
Confirm?: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 - 1 = 131d10 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 3 = 18
Bec de corbin has reach, so I may get an AoO as well. Unless I'm flat-footed? Can we still be surprised in such a situation? I'm not sure how I would adjudicate this.

Tessa Mithrandir |

Tessa follows the others warily, "Stay close, Azil. I don't like this any more than you."
I can't wait for Speak with Master to come online.....
